Dhaka Stock Exchange witnessed a gaining session while investors

participation stood at BDT 5363 million The benchmark general index

DSEX closed at 5363 which is 40 points higher than the last trading

session

The days trade started with positive note which continued almost

throughout the day showing signs of sideways movement in the end

Out of total 325 traded scrips 223 advanced 71 declined and 31

remained unchanged A new stock named pacific denim will make its

debut tomorrow on the bourse

Market turnover declined by 15 and summed up at BDT 54 billion

SAIFPOWER attracted the most attention from the market participants

as it was todayrsquos top traded stock accounting for 62 of the total

turnover Pharmaceuticals sector dominated the turnover by accounting

for 166 of market turnover followed by Engineering (163) amp Bank

Pacific Denims to make debut on February 7 2017

Pacific Denims will make its share trading debut on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) Tuesday (February 7) under N category officials said Using the fixed price method the export-oriented garment and denim fabric producer raised BDT 750 million floating 75 million ordinary shares at BDT 10 each IPO subscription of the company was held between December 11 to December 19 for resident and non-resident Bangladeshis The securities regulator - Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) approved the IPO proposal of Pacific Denims on September 1 to raise BDT 750 million from the public The company will use the funds from the initial public offering for its business expansion loan repayments and IPO expenses The companys weighted average earnings per share (EPS) stood at BDT 263 and net asset value (NAV) without revaluation per share at BDT 2259 as of December 2015 AFC Capital acted as issue manager of the Pacific Denims IPO

A fourth of Sonalis loans soured

Sonali Banks woes are showing no signs of respite with the latest data showing that more than one-fourth of its total loans have become default -- a development that is causing anxiety to both the finance minister and the central bank governor At the close of 2016 the countrys second largest banks default loans stood at BDT 1025 billion against the total loans of BDT 3843 billion In other words 2666 of Sonalis loans have defaulted up from 25 a year earlier The average amount of default loans in the banking sector is 1034 whereas it is 27 in Sonali said Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir Also of Sonalis 1208 branches 370 are loss-making according to Kabir ldquoIf we look at different indexes of Sonali Bank there is not much scope for becoming optimisticrdquo said Finance Minister AMA Muhith at the banks annual conference held yesterday at the Diploma Engineers Institution in the capital For instance the banks operating profit slumped about 51 from a year earlier to BDT 424 million Total recovery against the default loans stood at BDT 129 billion in 2016 which was BDT 273 billion in 2015

Banking commission at the end of government tenure Muhith

Finance minister AMA Muhith on Sunday said the government might appoint a commission for the countryrsquos banking sector at the end of the present governmentrsquos current tenure Although Muhith ruled out appointing a commission in 2015 he said the government is now considering to put it in place before 2019 Muhith was addressing the annual meeting of the state-owned Sonali Bank in the city The current tenure of the present government would expire in January 2019 Muhith hoped that the next elected government would implement the recommendations of the proposed commission He admitted that the government in the past did not accept recommendations from various sectors for appointing a commission Centre for Policy Dialogue a local think-tank has long been demanding for appointing a commission against the backdrop of a series of loan scams in the banking sector Sonali the countryrsquos largest state-owned commercial bank is facing capital shortfall after the little-known Hallmark Group embezzled more than BDT 36 billion from one of its branches Once profit making BASIC Bank is facing almost bankruptcy after former chairman Sheikh Abdul Hye Bacchu disbursed suspicious loans worth more than BDT 60 billion in violation of the banking rules

Turn to emerging markets as western economies put up trade barriers Standard Chartered boss advises exporters

Exporters and manufacturers of Bangladesh should shift their focus the emerging Asian and domestic market due to growing trade protectionism in the West a top executive of Standard Chartered in Bangladesh has said At the same time the country needed to have a well developed and properly functional financial market to improve the condition of doing business and attract more investment Alamgir Morshed managing director of StanChart in Bangladesh told the FE in a recent interview He shared views on the local and global economic outlook as well as the ways of fine-tuning the local financial market For years trade has been the driver of the global economy where the focus of the emerging economies was on capturing the Western market for increasing their exports he said In recent times however a protectionist trend is apparently emerging in the West which can restrict the flow of global trade he said suggesting the local exporters and manufacturers to explore the regional markets in Asia as well as the domestic market as the remedy

Banks asked to give non-resident Bangladeshis door-to-door services for remittance

Bangladesh Bank on Sunday asked the top 20 remittance receiving banks to provide door-to-door services to non-resident Bangladeshis by appointing agents abroad to increase the inflow of remittance through the banking channel The BB directive came after the countryrsquos inward remittance dropped in January year-on-year for the seventh month in a row Earlier the BB observed that the inward remittance plunged in 2016 as a good number of expatriate Bangladeshis preferred illegal lsquohundirsquo conduit to banking channel in sending their money The central bank at a meeting on Sunday asked the 20 banks to sign agreement with more foreign exchange houses and foreign banks so that non-resident Bangladeshis feel encouraged to send their hard-earned money through the banking channel lsquoThe BB asked the banks to provide door-to-door services to NRBs so that they shun the lsquohundirsquo channel in sending remittancersquo BB governor SK Sur Chowdhurytold reporters after the meeting with the banks at the central bank headquarters in the capital

Pacific Denims Trading of the shares of Pacific Denims Limited will commence at DSE from February 07 2017under N category DSE Trading Code for Pacific Denims Limited is PDL and DSE Company Code is 17473 TheCompany has reported its profit after tax of Tk 2765 million and basic EPS of Tk 073 for the 3 (three) monthsperiod ended on 30 September 2016 (July-September 2016) as against profit after tax of Tk 2689 million andbasic EPS of Tk 071 for the same period of the previous year It is to be noted that basic EPS has been calculatedbased on weighted average Pre-IPO paid-up number of shares ie 38000000 shares for both the periodsHowever considering Post-IPO 113000000 number of shares the Companys basic EPS for the 3 (three) monthsperiod ended on 30 September 2016 would be Tk 024 and NAV per share would be Tk 1625 as on 30September 2016

DESHBANDHU The Company has informed that the Board of Directors has decided to purchase a land measuringof 015 acres at Kawadi Charsindur Palash Narsingdi at a cost of Tk 375000000 excluding registration andother related expenses

GEMINISEA With reference to their earlier news (disseminated by DSE on 30012017) regarding Unaudited Q2Financials the company has revised their earlier provided financials as follows EPS was Tk 186 for October-December 2016 as against Tk 569 (restated) for October-December 2015EPS was Tk 718 for July-December2016 as against Tk 467 (restated) for July-December 2015 NOCFPS was Tk (7014) for July-December 2016 asagainst Tk (7964) (restated) for July-December 2015 NAV per share was Tk 2015 as of December 31 2016 andTk 1430 (restated) as of June 30 2016

SAIFPOWER Trading of the shares of the Company will remain suspended on record date ie 07022017 forRights entitlement

RSRMSTEEL Mr Maksudur Rahman one of the SponsorsDirectors of the Company has expressed his intentionto sell 700000 shares (Bonus Shares) out of his total holding of 15621800 shares of the Company at prevailingmarket price (in the Block Market) through Stock Exchange within next 30 working days

UNIQUEHRL Mr Mohd Noor Ali and Mrs Salina Ali both are SponsorsDirectors of the Company have furtherreported that they have completed their buy of 240000 shares and 760000 shares respectively at prevailingmarket price through Stock Exchange as announced earlier
