This weekend's Scripture Readings can cause all of us to step back and reflect on the beauty and the wealth of Sacred Scripture.

In this first Reading taken from 1 Kings, we find Solomon, the new King, the successor of King David, asking God for grace and blessing. Solomon does not ask for wealth or riches or victory over his enemies, but asks God for the grace to be a good and noble leader. He asks God that he be compassionate and wise and that he govern his people remembering that he is a vessel of the Lord. From our reading, we know that God not only answers the prayer but also grants Solomon his favor in other matters as well.

"The one up there" One day, John XXIII took Cardinal Della Aqua aside and supposedly said, "My dear Della Aqua, The One up there is the Lord God, I am merely the one on the third floor!"

Solomon petitioned God in humility, in this day and time, all of us need to practice a sense of humility and charity.
