ABOUT

Daniel E. BurnsChairman of the BoardBethesda Hospital Foundation

As a member of our community, I hope that you are

aware of the incredible enhancements at Bethesda

Memorial Hospital that benefit YOU – made possible

through community support.

As Bethesda Memorial Hospital celebrates its 50th

Anniversary, the Bethesda Hospital Foundation

continues to raise funds to enhance the state of

excellence through our Comprehensive Centers of

Excellence in many specialties including Heart, Stroke

and Cancer. Most recently our efforts are directed to

advance the numerous areas including the Bethesda

Comprehensive Cancer Center and Bethesda’s Center

for Women and Children.

As you can see in this publication, Bethesda is

growing in amazing ways to serve our community.

Your support is vital to our ability to provide

world-class healthcare to you and everyone in

our community.

Donations from community supporters stay at

Bethesda and all of us benefit from the return on our

investment. Please join us in our 50th celebration and

make a tax-deductible gift today by making a secure

online donation at the Foundation page on our

website www.BethesdaWeb.com, by completing the

Sincerely,

Daniel E. Burns, Chairman of the Board

Robert B. HillPresident & CEOBethesda Healthcare System

As Bethesda Memorial Hospital celebrates its

golden anniversary, we look back at the vision our

founders established: that Bethesda would be a

not-for-profit, community-owned hospital and

that our mission would be to provide quality

health services in a caring manner.

Today that vision remains ever-present, as we

strive to provide community benefit to those we

serve. In fulfilling our mission, we must remain

financially viable by generating a surplus to

continue delivering “exceptional community

benefit.” Without adequate financial resources,

which include the support of our community, we

cannot provide the high quality healthcare

services the community demands.

At Bethesda, the donations from community

supporters stay here and all of us benefit from the

return on our investment. This is one of many

ideals that distinguish Bethesda from other

hospitals.

We extend our gratitude to the leadership of the

Board of Trustees, our physicians, our dedicated

staff and our community supporters who have

made this extraordinary achievement possible.

Thank you for your support these past 50 years,

and may we continue to serve our community for

the next 50!

When it comes to serving the community, providing

charity care is only one way we help improve the quality of

life in our community. In the last year, Bethesda provided

$39.9 million in indigent and charity care write-offs.

As part of our commitment to provide “exceptional

community benefit,” we serve our community in a variety

of ways – from health fairs, to educational programs to vital

health screenings held throughout the year.

Patient safety is our number one priority and Bethesda

exceeds most national benchmarks for patient safety

initiatives.

Key services at Bethesda include:• A state-of-the-art PET/CT scanner for detecting Cancer

and Alzheimer’s• Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation• Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

and a 3-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit• Hospice & Palliative Care Unit,

(in cooperation with Hospice of Palm Beach County)• Sleep Disorders Lab for adults and children• Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine program

Our rapid response teams known as the Bethesda “bee

teams,” are comprised of critical care nurses and respiratory

therapists who respond when a patient’s health has been

compromised. Since the program started at Bethesda three

years ago, 357 lives have been saved, reducing Bethesda’s

mortality rate by 31%. The program has had an added

any patient who doesn’t “look quite right”.

THE CORNELL INSTITUTE FOR REHABILITATION MEDICINEcared for more than 660 patients last year. Now three years

old, this beautiful, 28-bed inpatient facility is located on the

third floor above our outpatient pavilion and features special

programs for neurologic and orthopedic rehabilitation.

THE DRISKILL CENTER FOR CARING EXCELLENCE continues to

make strides in teaching the philosophy of caring excellence.

This Center, provided through the generosity of Walter and

Lucienne Driskill, is dedicated to the effective integration of

caring skills with clinical excellence. Through one-on-one

mentoring, Bethesda’s care coaches are working with every

healthcare provider who provides direct patient care. In our

third year, we had 228 graduates and Bethesda’s patient

satisfaction scores are at an all time high, topping the 93rd

percentile!

THE STAFF AT THE EMERGENCy DEPARTMENT

at Bethesda Memorial Hospital is beaming with

pride. After spending months and years working

to streamline efficiency they have just learned

that all their efforts are improving patient care.

A new study just published in Academic

emergency Medicine Journal showed results of

a two year study of 408 u.S. hospitals – telling

readers that the average emergency room length

of stay for patients is 349 minutes (5.82 hours).

This is much longer than the American national

target of excellence of 180 minutes (3 hours).

Bethesda is exceeding the national standards. Our

average length of time for a patient in Emergency is

2.71 hours – less than HALF the national average and

well under the national target for excellence.

This is great news for patients. Explains the study’s

lead author, Dr. Jesse M. Pines, assistant professor of

Emergency Medicine at the university of Pennsylvania

School of Medicine: “Emergency departments are not

designed to care for patients for long times but it

happens all over the country…the longer people stay in

the E.D. the more likely they are to die.”

Bethesda is also very efficient in getting patients to

see an emergency physician as quickly as possible after

arrival. The national target is 30 minutes after signing

in. Bethesda’s latest results show we are just a few

seconds over that mark – and continuing to

improve each year.

Room excellence is quite remarkable. While caring

for a total of 53,805 patients in the last 12 months

(February 2008 to January 2009), we've drastically

reduced the number of patients that leave without

being seen. In fact, looking at February of this year,

only 14 left without being seen.

Says Geralyn Lunsford, Bethesda Vice President,

Patient Services: “By almost any hospital standard this

is a wonderful record.

We have been improving the efficiency of our

Emergency Room for the last few years and it is now

really paying dividends. The work of our E.D. team and

the backup resources of the whole hospital have been

outstanding. We believe this translates to better care

for our patients. Thanks to the efforts of our E.D. team

and with the support of the entire hospital, we are able

to provide outstanding patient care for patients with

urgent medical needs.”

provides care in all aspects of cardiovascular disease.

SuccessSuccess is measured by every single patient and their

specific outcomes. The

Bethesda Heart Institute’s

patient outcomes have all

been successful. As of this

printing, the Bethesda

Heart Institute has

performed 210 open heart

surgeries with zero

mortalities. This placesBethesda among the top fivepercent of cardiovascularcenters in the countryreporting to the Society ofThoracic Surgeons (STS).

Certain surgical

procedures, such as mitral

valve replacement coupled

with coronary artery bypass,

can carry a high mortality risk as high as 10 percent

nationally. Coronary artery bypass surgery alone carries a

national mortality risk of 2.0 percent. At the Bethesda

Heart Institute, our surgical mortality is zero in all

categories.

All cardiac surgical procedures are done quickly and

efficiently. Most procedures are done on pump, but the

average pump time is 68.7 minutes at the Bethesda Heart

Institute compared to the national average of 113 minutes.

Coronary artery bypass patients and heart valve

repair/replacement patients are weaned from the ventilator

at 4.5 hours compared to 8.3 hours nationally. This is one

factor that helps decrease the patient’s time spent in the

Intensive Care unit to a median of 39.6 hours and gets the

typical patient home in just under seven days.

First Year Volumes The Bethesda Heart Institute has recorded:

• 1,454 diagnostic and interventional cardiac

catheterizations

• 397 cases in the cardiovascular operating room

including 210 open heart surgeries including aortic

aneurysm repairs and surgeries, coronary bypass

procedures, valves, aortic aneurysms and endarectomies

• 1,051 electrophysiology procedures including

pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators, cardiac

device implants, EP studies, TEES, cardioversions

Quality IndicatorsAll quality indicators that are monitored nationally –

the processes Bethesda Heart Institute uses in treating

heart attack and heart failure – compare favorably with

other hospitals nationwide. The program has not had any

mortalities related to surgical procedures and no sternal

wound infections. Both core measures are tracked by the

Society of Thoracic Surgery for benchmarking.

cardiovascular programs, enabling Bethesda to treat the

most complicated cases from day one. From the beginning,

the Institute has treated all patients regardless of their

severity. Together with the support of Bethesda’s

cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, dedicated

cardiovascular anesthesiologists and electrophysiologists,

the Institute is providing an unparalleled level of

cardiovascular care in our community.

The Institute is working with a comprehensive team of

physicians in all cardiovascular specialties who are

referring difficult and complicated cases because of the

Institute has the experienced cardiovascular surgeons,

facilities and technology to handle them.

Cardiac AlertsThese types of events, by their nature, are emergencies.

Thus, the Heart Institute was built with these most severe

and life-threatening situations in mind. Patients coming by

ambulance or through the emergency room with a cardiac

alert are being diagnosed and treated within the nationally

recognized 90-minute benchmark. The Emergency Medical

System (EMS) has brought in more than 100 cardiac

emergencies into our Emergency Department with 70% of

them within 81 minutes, exceeding the 90-minute

benchmark. The Institute's staff is confident that Bethesda

is well positioned to continue exceeding the 90-minute

benchmark.

Breakthroughs in Technology Leading cardiologists throughout the nation cite imaging

technology as the greatest breakthrough in the prevention

and successful treatment for cardiovascular disease. The

Bethesda Heart Institute brings the latest in Computed

Tomography (CT) imaging technology to our community.

Bethesda is the first hospital in Florida to offer the dual

source CT system. The all-new CT Imaging Suite is located

and linked between the Hospital’s Emergency Room and

the Heart Institute allowing direct access to both. This

technology provides specific anatomical detail, giving

clearer images to make diagnoses and treatment decisions

without performing invasive procedures.

Patient SatisfactionThe Institute has received very positive responses from

patients and families. The key clinical factors are the

superior experience of the medical team and the small

nurse-to-patient ratio allowing for successful patient

outcomes and intensive patient care. Other factors include

the beautiful, modern facility and technology, and amenities

such as large private rooms, and family-friendly access.

On the HorizonBethesda Heart Institute surgeons continue training to

offer new procedures including for the treatment of atrial

fibrillation. Bethesda Memorial Hospital continues to

research and obtain the latest state-of-the-art technology

including the Merci Retrieval System to remove clots from

cerebral vascular blood vessels, enhancing Bethesda’s

stroke program.

Another way Bethesda will soon be able to assist in the

critical “door to balloon

time” is through technology

that allows emergency

medical technicians (EMTs)

to wirelessly transmit

eletrocardiograms (ECGs)

directly to Bethesda from an

ambulance. Thanks to the

generosity of Bethesda

donors, plans are underway

to equip Palm Beach

County fire rescue vehicles

with modems for ECG

transmissions. Emergency

Department physicians will

be able to view an incoming

patient’s ECG prior to their

arrival. This will help

increase vital communication between emergency response

teams and Bethesda in order to diagnose the proper method

of treatment when the patient arrives.

In recognition of Bethesda’s 50th Anniversary, some of the Hospital’s longest employees shared whatBethesda means to them and to the community. We congratulate these employees on their dedicated yearsof service and thank them for sharing their insights into what it means to be part of Bethesda’s great team.

My WIFE AND I have both been employees at

Bethesda since 1981. She is a labor and delivery nurse

and I am the Program Director for the Radiography

Program. We now have lived more

than half of our lives together,

working here at the Hospital. Three of

our four daughters were born here.

Our granddaughter was born here last

August and our second grandchild was

born at Bethesda as well this year. So, we have three

generations of our family connected to Bethesda. Many

of the graduates of our Radiography Program stay on

and join [the Bethesda family].

Over the last 28 years, I’ve seen many changes in

healthcare and imaging... our diagnostic imaging

department has evolved from a film-based technology

to a state-of-the art digital network.

Bethesda has continued to be accountable to the

community first and foremost. I like that. The hospital

leadership takes its commitment to the healthcare of

the community as a sacred trust, which is as it should

be. Many of my friends were born and raised here and

speak very highly of the hospital, some actively and

significantly supporting the hospital in various ways.

This reciprocal commitment seems to be the essence of

what a community Hospital should be.

My wife has had several women stop her as we

walk along the ocean in Delray Beach, Lantana and

Lake Worth and say, “you took care of me when I had

my first baby! I remember...” Their memories are vivid

and happy, years after their visit. This is, of course, a

credit to my wife’s superb nursing skills and

compassionate heart; but that is one of the most

important assets that make our Hospital such a

valuable part of the community.

I never expected to be here this long. But now,

having grown up professionally here, had a family

here, and having been able to participate in the

education of so many fine radiographers over the last

25+ years...it just feels like home.

BETHESDA, NOT A PLACE, not a building, not just a

company, but a family. To be a member of a family

provides the necessary support to be successful,

achieve your dreams and make a

difference in the world. Bethesda is

such a family to me. Having started my

journey here as a nurse 33 years ago,

I have been immersed in a caring

environment that supported my growth

and allowed me the flexibility to enjoy a balance of

work life and family life. It is here at Bethesda where I

met my husband, brought my two sons into the world,

share a career with my daughter-in-law, a nurse in the

Neonatal Intensive Care unit (NICu) and now

welcome my grandson as a Bethesda Baby. It is here,

at Bethesda, that I entrust the care of my loved ones

when they are ill and need the expertise of a hospital

that cares for them and about them. Knowing that we

will heal them and care for them is an assurance that

I can give not only to my family, but Bethesda extends

that assurance to all families.

Change has occurred at Bethesda in my 33 years,

yet despite the progress, the growth, the inevitable

march of technology, the essence of the Bethesda

family remains. It is good to have an end to journey

toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.

(Leguin) My journey at Bethesda has made my life’s

journey an adventure and a life worth living. Thank

you Bethesda for being a part of my journey and my

family.

33 Years of Service

My GREATEST SATISFACTION about working at

Bethesda Memorial Hospital is after taking care of

patients and seeing the joy when they

say, what a wonderful hospital, what

great staff, and what a great

experience they had. I am also thrilled

when they say that Bethesda Memorial

Hospital would be a “definite yes” for

their family and friends. It makes me feel good that we

have a caring staff, not only for patients but also for

each other. A great reward is to know that I am

appreciated.

critical and in no condition to travel. Bob needed to have

surgery the next day and soon found he was in really good

hands, and was where he needed to be.

Samantha Kwon, M.D., a Bethesda cardiovascular and

thoracic surgeon, performed a coronary bypass – bypassing

four of his blocked vessels using the left internal mammary

artery and four vein graphs. It was also noted that Bob had

a history of atrial fibrillation, an arrhythmia where the top

chambers of his heart don’t contract properly. So as a

precautionary measure, Dr. Kwon also performed a new and

special procedure called MAZE to prevent this heart

disrithmea.

Bob was discharged in four days and has continued a

remarkable recovery.

“Bethesda saved my life, “ Bob says. “I’m lucky to have

been at a hospital where doctors wanted to search to find

out what was wrong with me. If Dr. Styperek hadn’t

insisted that I have the extra test, I wouldn’t be alive today.”

Bob continues to sing the praises of Bethesda loud and

clear, he says: Attention snowbirds, you can go home, but

you won’t get better care than here at Bethesda. From Mayo

to Sloan Kettering to Cedars–Sinai to the university of

California, San Francisco (uCSF) to Stanford, you can’t get

better treatment than at the Bethesda Heart Institute. I am

a walking advertisement for the Bethesda Heart Institute.

He continues: From start to finish, the people who took

care of me were so incredible. Frannie LeMoigne, the Heart

Institute surgical coordinator, kept my family informed with

play-by-play of my progress, which they were so grateful for.

And the Bethesda team could give customer service training

to corporations. I can’t think of any way they could have

been better.”

BOB JUDSON and his wife, Jan, live in a suburb of San

Francisco, but often visit South Florida to be with

friends, play golf and vacation. It was on one of these

trips in November when Bob, age 59, and the principal in a

commercial lending group, felt an on and off again sensation

to the left of his chest bone. It wasn’t painful and didn’t

seem to be the classic symptoms of a heart attack, but Bob

knew something wasn’t right so he came to Bethesda.

He received a thorough examination and underwent

several tests, but the results came back fine. He recalls, “the

doctors said medically I was ok to go, but because of the

location of the pain, they wanted to admit me for

observation – and thank goodness they did.”

Bob was transferred from the Emergency Department to

the Heart Institute where within a few hours Bethesda

cardiologists Janus Styperek, M.D. and Lawrence Lovitz, M.D.,ordered tests and recommended a cardiac catheterization. In

conference with Bob’s cardiologist in San Francisco, it was

agreed Bethesda should run the test, which his hometown

doctor appreciated, but didn’t think anything would be

found.

The test actually revealed shocking results. Bob’s left

coronary artery was 80 percent blocked, which was

restricting blood flow to his heart. Without adequate blood,

his heart was becoming starved of oxygen and vital

nutrients it needed to work properly. Bob was on the verge

of a heart attack! Right away, Dr. Lovitz started the

procedure to insert a balloon pump into his aorta to help

support his heart until he could have surgery.

Immediately, Bob and Jan thought they should fly home

to let their doctors there perform the surgery, but he was

FAMILy-CENTERED CARE has been at the heart of the

Bethesda Memorial Hospital Center for Women and

Children since 1959. As the first maternity hospital in

South Palm Beach County, Bethesda is the second

busiest maternity hospital with more than 3,300 babies

born in 2008.

Just as Bethesda Memorial Hospital has grown from

a 70-bed hospital to a 401-bed comprehensive, full

service hospital, so, too, has

the Center for Women and

Children grown to meet the

needs of the community. That

is why the Center for Women

and Children has launched a

comprehensive plan to expand

its services over the next five

years. Launched in 2008, the

plan calls for the following

key areas of the Center for

Women and Children to be

enhanced to complement the

growth of our community:

Maternity, Antepartum, Laborand Delivery, Pediatrics andNeonatal Intensive Care.

The expansion began with

the creation of a new, 10-bed

Obstetrical Triage unit.

While the new 10-bed Triage unit features a state-of-

the-art monitoring system, an experienced team of

Maternal-Fetal medicine physicians and obstetrical

nurses now staff the new unit, providing personalized

care for mothers-to-be.

The Obstetrical Triage unit, which opened in

October 2008, has been designed to provide the highest

level of care for expecting mothers who need to be

monitored prior to delivery. Designed with the patient’s

total comfort in mind, a soothing water theme offers

expecting moms a tranquil serene environment as they

prepare for their special arrival.

Bethesda’s renovation of the Center for Women and

Children continues with the 34-bed maternity unit

where after delivery, new mothers will find a beautiful,

new maternity center, with patient rooms that feature

spa-like amenities and inviting décor for families and

visitors.

In addition, Bethesda’s multi-purpose family

resource room is currently being expanded to offer daily

classes in breastfeeding, baby care and infant safety

that are available for new moms and families as well

as an online resource library.

Bethesda also offers one-on-one breastfeeding

programs for moms after they leave the hospital.

Recognizing a growing need in our community,

Bethesda will add a new Antepartum Unit that will be

staffed by maternal-fetal medicine specialists. The

Antepartum unit will provide the most advanced care

for women with high risk

pregnancies, who require

long-term bedrest and 24-

hour monitoring in the

hospital setting.

Bethesda’s Labor andDelivery unit will also undergo

a renovation. This 12-bed

unit, equipped with Labor-

Delivery-Recovery-beds,

provides the expecting mother

with state-of-the-art care and

comfort and she prepares for

her special delivery.

While neonatal admissions

represent 10% of Bethesda’s

deliveries (about 300 per

year), there is a tremendous

need for Bethesda to enhance

its Neonatal Intensive Care unit. This 15-bed unit

provides the highest level of care to premature infants.

The renovations will make it easier for clinical

caregivers to provide optimal care and monitoring

access, while offering more comfort to families who are

visiting their newborns.

The Center’s Pediatrics unit, known as the

Children’s Center, which sees 1,200 patients per year,

will be renovated to enhance the hospital experience

for children and their families. With 200 admissions

per year, Bethesda’s Pediatric Intensive Care unit will

also be expanded, thereby enhancing the level of care

that is provided to children from birth to 17 years of age.

As Bethesda Memorial Hospital celebrates its

golden anniversary of 50 years of caring for our

community, we are proud to continue our tradition of

excellence in maternal child care with comprehensive

maternity and pediatric services that reflect our

commitment to providing quality health services in a

caring manner.

The Center offers the latest in radiation therapy

including external beam Radiation Therapy with

multiple beam energies, Stereotactic radiosurgery and

radiotherapy, prostate seed implants, high dose-rate

brachytherapy (HDR) including Mammosite,

computer and radiation beam

technology have made it possible

to offer Intensity Modulated

Radiation Therapy (IMRT).

The IMRT technology has

proven to be highly effective and

successful in the outcomes to

patients in their treatment and the

remission of their cancers. The

new system will provide a

modulated radiation beam that

can now cover the entire tumor

site in a single rotation, significantly decreasing both

the treatment time and the amount of radiation

delivered to healthy surrounding tissue.

For our patients, this advantage means a daily

treatment that is two to eight times shorter than a

conventional IMRT treatment. Due to the state-of-

the-art technology of the RapidArc system, a patient

receiving an IMRT treatment that used to take 10-15

minutes, can now be treated in under 2 minutes.

During treatment patients can now resume their
