FYI: Solemnity of Pentecost – May 15, 2016 Toward the end of Jesus’ ministry on earth, He promised the sending of the Paraclete. Today we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the birth of the Church. The Reading from the Acts of the Apostles is filled with images and symbols worthy of Stephen Spielberg. The wind, the tongues of fire, being filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues all lead to a new courage and strength given to each of the apostles to spread the good news to all nations. Even strangers are affected by their proclamation and wonder how these apostles can speak to them in their native languages. Truly an act of God has taken place! The Psalm for today is our response asking God to continue to send His Spirit and enliven us and make us holy. The Second Reading whether it be from 1st Corinthians or Romans, is a reminder of how the Trinity works in concert to proclaim that “Jesus is Lord” and that all of the baptized have the ability to call God “Abba” or “Daddy” in the midst of the Church. The Sequence or poetic text mandated for the Pentecost Celebration on Sunday is a beautiful expression which unites the first and second Reading into a cohesive unit. Finally, the Gospel Proclamation taken from St. John’s Gospel takes us back to the evening of the Resurrection. Jesus greets his apostles with peace, shows his hands and side and gives them the commission to forgive sin. The alternative Gospel reminds us to remain in love. Pentecost officially is the end of the Easter Season. However, all of us are called by God never to lose sight of His love, compassion and strength and that all of us are loved! Brothers and Sisters, while we have time, let us do good. ~ Fr. Dan
