Saint Mark Catholic Church stmarknc.org 14740 Stumptown Road, Huntersville, NC 28078
We, the members of St. Mark Catholic Church, a Faith Community called as one by Christ to serve and witness in His name, seek to celebrate our Faith through service and evangelization
to each other, our families and our community.

From the Pastor The Book of Daniel, from which our First Reading is drawn, was written some two centuries before the birth of Christ. This is only significant in that many of
the prophets (Daniel is considered one of the major prophets) lived as many as six centuries before Christ. However, regardless of the timeline, we need to be moved by and appreciative of the prophecies we find in the Old Testament. In the particular passage in today’s reading it states, “The one like a Son of Man received dominion, glory, and kingship.” Today, of course, is the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, and this reading very much parallels what is portrayed in the Transfiguration. The interesting point within this reading from Daniel, however, is that it refers to the “Son of Man,” which is the term Jesus Himself used most often to describe Himself. We have referenced this fact previously. In fact, the term “Son of Man” occurs 85 times in the Gospels, and in 83 of them it is Jesus who uses the term. (It appears 32 times in Matthew; 15 times in Mark; 26 times in Luke; and 12 times in John, and it is in John where it is used twice by someone other than Jesus.) The important point for us is that Jesus calling Himself the Son of Man explains that He was born of a woman, and He shares in our earthly conditions and sufferings. That fact should make us want to embrace Him as our Savior, our Friend, and our Shepherd even more.
Pastoral Pondering
Again drawing from the Parish Survey, there seems to be some confusion regarding what the pastor’s vision for the parish is. The Vision Statement was prepared with the collaboration of the Pastoral Council and staff. Hence going through it and offering some brief comments might be beneficial:
The Parish of St. Mark strives to… Be a welcoming, dynamic, and united faith community of intentional disciples.
• Engage volunteers and paid staff to actively encourage and model parish welcoming. This involves re-orienting significant volunteer pools towards a new way of operating.
• The vast majority of parishioners are encountered on the weekend. Hence, this is the best time to engage them and assist them to get connected at St. Mark. For this reason staff members are asked to be present for the “weekend experience” so that they can be more useful and accessible to our parishioners.
• Those that meet and greet from the parking lot to the pew have a unique calling to be the face of the parish. A smile can go a long way.
• Each person has to examine him/herself and ask if the position they are presently serving is right for their temperament. Changing ministries is not a bad thing, and can actually be more fulfilling if you have been in a ministry that you find difficult for some time.
• Such a move requires re-education and evaluation of present structures. The basic idea was put forward that ushers would take care of things from the doors into the church from the narthex. The greeters would take care of the narthex, and the staff would man the welcome Kiosk and help with parish registrations and information. The point is to engage people and help folks to feel welcomed and important.
• You cannot give what you do not have. There are no accidental Christians. We need to be intentional disciples and this requires sacrifice and planning. Intentional discipleship then is an act of love for Jesus and for His bride, the Church. Our mission is to share the common goal of helping every person that walks through the doors of St. Mark parish to come to a better knowledge and friendship with Jesus Christ and to get to heaven.
This is everyone’s responsibility, not a chosen few. If we are to be effective in evangelizing the culture, we have to be authentic in living out the faith.
Blessings,

Men’s Bible Study – The Prophets: Messenger of God’s Mercy When: Most Tue. evenings 7:30 – 9 pm, beginning Sep. 19 Where: Msgr. Kerin Family Center, Room 200/201
Men, now is the time to enrich and learn more about your Catholic faith. This fall the St. Mark Men’s Bible Study Group will be commencing a ten-week study of the Old Testament Prophets, a course produced by Ascension Press. Discover who the prophets were, what their message was, and why they are important to us. Read the words of Hosea, Jonah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel and others as they urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and
announce the blessings of faithfulness. If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is his Bride, then the prophets can be seen as “spiritual marriage counselors.” Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom, and show us how to share Him with others. There will be a registration fee of approximately $33 to cover the cost of the course and workbook. Please register by Sept. 3.

Thursday Morning Study Sept. 7 – Dec. 7; 10 am – 12:30 pm Msgr. Kerin Family Center
Come and be transformed by Sr. Gertrude Gillette’s Study on Humility. Her lecture is based on the work of Dom Bernard Bonowitz OCSO, entitled Saint Bernard’s Three Course Banquet: Humility, Charity and Contemplation in the De Gradibus (Monastic Wisdom Series, Liturgical Press). This book was originally conceived for monks and nuns who had completed their novitiate, but had not yet made their solemn vows. By partaking in this study, we will enjoy one of the purest sources of the Monastic Tradition, which at that depth becomes one with the Gospel itself. There is a non-refundable cost of $40.00 for the Study, not including the book. Affordable babysitting is available for preschool age and younger.
Contact: Cindy Brown, 704-491-3945 Thursday Evening Study Sept. 14 – Dec. 7; 7 – 9 pm Msgr. Kerin Family Center
The evening study is entitled “Who am I to Judge?” By Dr. Edward Sri (Ignatius Press). Pope Francis calls relativism the “spiritual poverty of our times.” This study brings clarity and gives us an important key to responding to relativism effectively through a Catholic moral worldview. There is a non-refundable cost of $25 for the Study.
Contact: Jennifer Creter, 980-253-0882 Registration and additional information for both studies can be found on the St. Mark website at stmarknc.org/WOJ. New members are always welcome!
