PREPARE THE WAY Saint John the Baptist appears on the scene today as Advent enters its

second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the

face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we have

fallen into old sinful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. John the Baptist invites us to prepare the way for

the Lord, in whom we place our hope. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Second Sunday of Advent December 4, 2016

I am very grateful to all of you who have participated in the Beyond Sunday campaign. Thus far, the total amount of pledges is just over $350,000, which means $210,000 will go to help families afford a Catholic education for their children as well as assisting schools with the purchase of necessary technology and $140,000 will be coming back to our parish. Your sacrificial donation will be

of great benefit to many people, including us. If you have not given yet I ask you to prayerfully consider your participation. Can you donate $1,000 a year for the next five years? Too much? How about $500 a year? Still too much? How about $50 a year for the next five years? That’s less than $4.25 a month, just over a dollar a week. Surely, that is affordable, and, again, many people will be helped. I was on retreat when the bulletin for the First Sunday of Advent was printed so allow me to offer this quote for your reflection during this special time. It was spiritual writer, Bill McKibben who penned, “Advent is the time to listen for footsteps—you can’t hear footsteps when you’re running yourself.” During this beautiful, yet busy, Advent Season be sure to slow down sometime and listen for the footsteps of Christ. He’s on the way. He’s moving toward your heart. He wants to take over your life and lead you to Paradise. Slow down and listen for Him. Work continues on our new worship space at school. The dismantling of the interior of the school chapel is proceeding as I write. The walls that made up the sacristies are coming down as is the fake brickwork that covered the walls. Soon work will commence in removing sidewalks and dirt where the two expansions to the building will be. It is good to at last see a lot of work being done. I am thankful to all who decorated church for the Season of Advent and to all who changed the missalettes. I’m thankful, too, to all those who have purchased items for our Giving Tree. By the way, that tree was donated by Mason’s Nursery at 2296 Union Road. They will be donating other trees to St. Mark’s when we decorate for the Christmas Season. If you’re looking for a tree you might try them. Last Monday our 2nd grade parishioners made their First Confession and last Thursday Archbishop Carlson was here to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to our 8th graders. Please pray for these young parishioners. May the grace of the Sacraments inspire them to follow always Jesus Christ.

May God bless all of you. Father Hambrough

St. Mark's Ladies Guild

The collected toys will be donated to local charities in the St. Louis community. This Mass is a great way to celebrate the Advent season.

choices after you have updated just remember you can slide your screen over for additional features.

From the Desk of Msgr. Forst

When I was growing up our dining room was locked during the month of December. It was the Holy Season of Advent. The 3rd Sunday was Gaudete

Sunday. On Christmas Eve the big sliding door was opened and we got to see a tree and then gifts for each of us. It was not elaborate but it did give us reason to rejoice (Gaudete). Now it is not easy for me to enjoy the present “state of affairs”. For many it is the one day of the year to celebrate, for others the tree was taken down soon after Christmas. Pray that some of those “happy times” will come back so that we can celebrate the Birth of Jesus.

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to write letters to our beloved "shut-in" or sick. Your generous outpouring of love and time spent writing these "love notes" is greatly appreciated. May God bless you abundantly at Christmas and throughout the New Year!

Please pray for the repose of the souls of our parishioners who recently died, Lorraine Baker and Anna Kemper. May they, and all the faithful departed , rest in peace.

As mentioned last week by seminarian Patrick Russell, you are invited to attend the Annual Advent Novena at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. The Novena began last Wednesday and it concludes Thursday, December 8th. It begins each evening at 7:00 pm at the seminary in Shrewsbury. You are invited also to the Novena occurring at St. Andrew Church. This Novena begins Saturday, December 17 and concludes on December 23. It begins each evening at 6:00 pm.

Update Membership Information

Does our Church database have YOUR family membership correct? It is time for us to update our

database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in your family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership

record? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed the Church Office about changes to your record, please let us know at 743-8600 so that the

information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct.

Guide Book & Directory Advertising Opportunity

We have contacted Guide Book (GBP) to publish a Guide Book & Directory for our congregation that will be updated and delivered directly to your homes annually. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions and events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided and mailed to each member at no cost to our church. Local businesses are being solicited to advertise in the book. GBP would prefer to place advertisements for members of our congregation over your business’s competitors. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call our office at 314-743-8600.

Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.
