Second Sunday of Easter April 27, 2014

The celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is such a glorious occasion that it cannot be contained to just one 24 hour period. No, it takes eight days, an octave, to adequately celebrate this amazing feast. Today, at St. Mark’s we bring the Octave to a beautiful conclusion as we share with our 2nd graders the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

Undoubtedly, this is a great and exciting day for these youngsters, a day to which they have been looking forward for a long time. Please ask God to instill within them a lifelong hunger and thirst for the Body and Blood of Christ. Sadly, many people will tell these children that they needn’t bother with receiving Holy Communion weekly or that praying at home or walking through a majestic forest or strolling down a beautiful beach is a sufficient substitute for the Bread of Life. Our First Communicants need our prayers to assist them as they respond to Christ’s command to “Take this, all of you, and eat it. Take this, all of you, and drink it.”

Another word of thanks to all who made our celebration of Easter so wonderful. Our parish is blessed to have so many dedicated and talented people and I know I speak for many when I say we appreciate very much what you do to make our church and our worship so pleasing to God.

Fr. Carl Kemme of the Springfield, Illinois Diocese has been a friend for more than 30 years. We were a year apart going through the seminary. Now, he has been named by Pope Francis as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Wichita and Bishop-elect Kemme has invited me to come to his Episcopal Ordination Mass. So, I will be leaving Wednesday for Wichita and returning home Friday. Please pray for a safe journey. I will be praying for you.

God bless our First Communicants and God bless all of you.

Father Hambrough

Remember all the special women in your life with a special Mass. Mother’s Day Mass Offering cards are available now through Mother’s Day. You will find them at the end of each pew in church and they are available through the school and church offices during the week. A $5.00 donation per card is requested.

The Steubenville Youth Conference will be held the weekend of July 18th—20th at Missouri State University in Springfield MO. This is an incredible event, with thousands of teenagers from across the Midwest and

beyond gathering to grow in their faith, encounter Christ’s love, and have a great time. Space is limited so please let Father Olsen know as soon as possible at [email protected] or 743-8601 if you are interested in going on this retreat.
