Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time: The readings for the Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time speak about faith. We learn that patience, humility, and fortitude are fundamental elements needed to assist in the growth and development of our faith. When Paul writes to Timothy in the second reading today, he is encouraging him in the life of faith. The section we hear today concludes with Paul admonishing Timothy to guard the rich trust of faith and love that is his in Christ Jesus. Paul bids Timothy to do so with the help of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. For the Catholic community in the United States, the first Sunday of October is designated “Respect Life Sunday.” As Catholics, our respect for all life is rooted in the Bible and in our Trinitarian faith. We hold that each person is sacred because we have been made in the image of our creator God. We believe that each person is sacred because we have been redeemed by the Son who gave his life on the cross. And we believe in the sanctity of the human person because of the gift of the Spirit that dwells within us. Our respect for life is not limited to the unborn and the elderly. It extends to every person—something that can be difficult to do at times. But that is the vision to which we are called. WORDS FROM POPE FRANCIS: During his morning homily on Sept. 24 at Casa Sanctae Marthae, Pope Francis reflected on the humility and love of God, who always awaits us. The Sacrament of the Eucharist he said is “not a magic rite but an encounter with Jesus, who accompanies us in life.” The Holy Father quoted the psalm of the day, “Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord” to confirm the presence of the Lord in our lives. “In the history of the People of God, there are beautiful moments that give us joy and there are also ugly moments of pain, of martyrdom, of sin,” the Pope said. “Be it in ugly times, be it in beautiful times, one thing remains the same: the Lord is there, He never abandons His people,” he continued. “Because the Lord, in the day of sin, of the first sin, made a decision, He made a choice: to make History with his people. And God, who does not have a History because he is eternal, wished to make history, to walk close to His people. Even more so: to become one of us and like one of us, to walk with us, in Jesus.” DSA: We thank you for your generosity for the second collection that we had two weeks ago for the DSA. We collected $1570.50 towards our goal. We still owe $23,052.35 on this year’s DSA. Thank you for your generosity. BIRTHLINE WALK-A THON: Thank you to all who donated to this walk-a-thon. We collected over $3,000.00. A more detailed report will be in next week’s bulletin.

BOYNTON VETERAN’S COUNCIL: On October 23, 2013 at 11:00 AM there will be the unveiling of the United States Navy Monument at the Veterans Memorial Park, 411 North Federal Highway.

Prayer for Protection from Storms God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.
