Saint Mark Catholic Church stmarknc.org 14740 Stumptown Road, Huntersville, NC 28078
We, the members of St. Mark Catholic Church, a Faith Community called as one by Christ to serve and witness in His name, seek to celebrate our Faith through service and evangelization
to each other, our families and our community.

From the Pastor The fact that today’s Gospel from Mark makes reference to Jesus curing Peter’s mother-in-law would seem to point to the fact that
Peter was married. However, the majority of scholars are of the opinion that the wife may have died before Peter was called by Jesus as an Apostle. In fact, there are many misconceptions about St. Peter. For one, although often portrayed as much older, he was probably younger than Jesus. In fact, all 12 Apostles were most likely younger than Jesus.
Also, Peter is often presented in paintings and movies and books as being a very old man, but historians have also concluded that Peter was martyred in Rome when he was about 66 years old. He was never the old, old man in his 80’s we see quite often.
All of that is secondary to a simple statement in today’s Gospel about the mother-in-law. Specifically, St. Mark writes, “He (Jesus) approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them.” St. Matthew reveals this same fact in his Gospel (Matthew 8:15), and he writes, “He (Jesus) touched her hand and the fever left her, and she
Stewardship Corner As Catholics we are called by our Baptism to reach out and share our time, talent and treasure with our brothers and sisters. Do we see, listen and respond to God’s love? Bring your gifts, your very selves, to the Lord saying, “Here I am, send me.” When we live our faith by sharing our gifts and caring for others, we allow God’s love to be known and experienced through us. Contact our Stewardship Director at [email protected] if you wish to Grow in Christ, Serve One Another or Share Your Gifts at Saint Mark Jesus constantly invites us to simplicity through his teachings in the Gospel. Which parts of your life are confusing, congested, or cluttered? We yearn for simplicity, but our lives have a habit of getting out of control, a habit of becoming overwhelmed and overcrowded. Allow simplicity to direct your life, and permit a measure of silence and solitude to have their proper place in the course of your daily activities. You have to find your place in the grand scheme of life, but you will not find it by busying yourself with a million things that were not intended for you. ~Matthew Kelly Stop by the office to pick up your copy of Perfectly Yourself. got up and began to serve Him.”
The message for us is very basic. Peter’s mother-in-law responded to Jesus the same way we should when Jesus blesses us. She responded to the Lord and immediately served Him out of gratitude. That should be our motivation, and action, as well. Pastoral Pondering
In case anyone has not noticed, Cold and Flu season is in full swing. What we’ve noticed of late is a hesitation to receive from the chalices at Mass (significant amounts of Precious Blood left over) and even a hesitation to share the sign of peace. Obviously, we all need to be conscious of not spreading germs. In the interest of helping with this, we are discontinuing the distribution of Precious Blood this weekend and will continue that until after Easter (April 1). Also, please be respectful of those who do not wish to shake hands. We can still express a sign of peace in other ways, e.g. turning towards a person and saying, “peace be with you” without touching. The
Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa’s sisters) bow towards one another (in traditional Indian fashion). The point is just be aware of this concern and be respectful of the valid concerns of your brothers and sisters.
Lent is a little more than two weeks away. Ash Wednesday is on February 14th (celebrate Valentine’s day the weekend before!). It is a good time to begin planning how you will make good use of this holy season. On the first Friday of Lent (February 16) we will once again host The Vigil Project here at the parish. They will be in the Kerin Center from 7-9 pm and it will be a wonderful evening of music, prayer and fellowship. It will be a great opportunity to put us into the proper “Lenten frame of mind.”
Finally, please know that Father Becker, Father Carter, and I pray for you and your intentions daily. If we can be of assistance in any way, please don’t hesitate to let us know and please keep us in your prayers as well. Blessings,

Pietra Fitness - Leaner Lent 2018 When: Sat., Mar 3, 10, 17, 24; 8 am – 10 am Where: Parish Hall
The “Lean-er Lent” program is a women’s small group fitness and nutrition program that helps to get you back “on track” physically and spiritually. This will enable you to strengthen, tone, and energize your mind, body, and soul with a community of Catholic women striving toward the Feminine Genius.
This four-week program will be held at St. Mark on the Saturdays of March 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 8-10am. The session is divided into two parts. First, there is an hour-long workout doable for any fitness level. Second, an hour-long session will explore and define nutrition and wellness strategies which will transform habits into real lifestyle change. The fee is $75 for St. Mark women aged 16 and beyond.
Let’s “lean” on scripture, prayer, friends, and most importantly: a plan! Let’s use this program to recharge our Lenten efforts to make Easter even more meaningful while instituting real and sustainable health changes BEYOND Easter!

Celebrating Children at St. Mark To the parents of our young children, may we suggest... Relax! God put the wiggle in children: don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s House. Sit toward the front where it’s easier to see and hear. Quietly explain the parts of the Mass. Sing the songs, pray and say the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. Feel free to leave Mass with your child if you need to, but please come back! The way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to God and to Jesus. Let them know that they are at home in this liturgical gathering. To the members of the parish… A smile of encouragement and a kind word are always welcome to parents with small, active children.
