We invite You into the House today, Lord.

We seek to set the atmosphere for Your arrival.

May You, God, support us all the day long, till the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, in Your mercy, may You give us a safe lodging and a holy rest and peace at the last.

May Your Holy Spirit fill this house and cover the pulpit and the pew.

Bless the choir, deacons, and the preacher.

Give the preacher an anointing that makes preaching easy, and the congregation a heart that makes listening and doing real.

We thank You, today. We thank You, today.

We thank You, today, for Your Son, Jesus, and the blessing of life.

We wait with tiptoe anticipation on how You will show up today and bless Your children.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen, Amen, and Amen.

UniTeD CAPoeiRA ASSoCiATion – ChiCAGo

The mission of United Capoeira Association - Chicago (UCA Chicago) is to increase positive self-awareness, to encourage healthy active living, and to unite diverse communities through the martial art of Capoeira (an art form created

by enslaved Africans in Brazil). UCA Chicago is a proud member of the United Capoeira Association family of schools founded by the legendary Mestre Acordeon, a native of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Owned and operated under the guidance of Dr. Vernon Lindsay (Instrutor Leão Preto) we offer classes to adults and children at Village Leadership Academy located at 1001 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Chicago. More information about our class schedule and upcoming events can be found at www.ucachicago.com.

yAAShA ABRAhAM is the Educational Programming Coordinator for Planeta Azul Band and Passistas Samba Dance Group, tailoring cultural educational experiences on the elementary, secondary, and even the university level. She also works as a samba dance instructor in collaboration with years of dance, years of choreographing for Passistas Samba Dance Group, and years of teaching within the high risk youth sector have given Yaasha the tools necessary to run a successful program.

Past and current affiliations include Changing Worlds, Cicero School District #99, the Town of Cicero, Old Town School of Folk Music, Brazil In Chicago, Quilombo Cultural Center, Columbia College, Purdue University Calumet,

University of Tennessee Knoxville, and Murray State University. Yaasha strongly believes that cultural dance should be as informative as it is entertaining, and that both students and audiences deserve to have an experience that enriches them with more knowledge about its origins. She doesn’t just teach her students, she reaches them, helping provide needed skills to achieve both inside and outside of her classroom.

The class and performance being presented is Dança Baiana: The Crossroads of Colonialism and African Identities in Brazil. We will be learning choreography that explores the connection between the Yoruba religion of West Africa and European Roman Catholicism through the religions of Umbanda and Candomblé, both of which assert that belief in Christ as the Savior and honoring the ancestors can coexist as one faith.

Fasting For The Lenten SeasonAs we prepare for our churchwide Lenten season fast, keep in mind our 2016 Theme – The Fruit of the Spirit: Taste and See! Our reset cards for 2016 reflect the monthly Bible scriptures that support our theme, focusing on a separate fruit each month. For the time of our fast, they will focus on Joy and Peace. You are encouraged to use this resource as one of your sources of inspiration during our fasting period and beyond. Fasting is a spiritual discipline designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ. We do not fast to lose weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. In 2016, as we seek to renew our relationship with God, God will reveal God’s purpose and plan in your life if you dare fast, pray, study and learn the power of quiet time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and spend time with his Father in the mountains, to pray, study, reflect, meditate, and center his spirit. If fasting and prayer were the disciplines of Jesus, should not this be followed by us? Join with us this season and witness a breakthrough, as we fast, pray, study, reflect, meditate, and learn the power of quiet time.

Question: i have never fasted before?Answer: Consult your doctor first!* Fasting is not the removal of all food from your diet. Fasting is learning to discipline your mind, body and spirit to remove “something” you know hinders your ability to function at your highest capacity, from your life or diet.

Question: is fasting biblical?Answer: Fasting is biblical. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, fasting was used by the people of God to prepare for a spiritual challenge, hear God’s voice before making a major decision, and for removing destructive forces in your life.

Fast #1 - Fasting to confront destructive forces• February 10 – February 16

Eat all your meals before 6:00 p.m.• February 17 – February 23

Eat only two meals, before 6:00 p.m.• February 24 – March 1

Eat only one meal a day before 6:00 p.m.• March 2 – March 8

Drink only juices, water, and/or tea• March 9 – March 15

Eat only fruits and vegetables, before 6:00 p.m.

• March 16 – March 26 Slowly begin to add meat to your diet

Fast #2 – The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,

could fast eating only fruits and vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king.

• February 10 – February 16 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.

• February 17 – February 23 Eat only two meals a day, before 6:00 p.m.

• February 24 – March 1 Eat only fruits and vegetables, before 6:00 p.m.

• March 2 – March 8 Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m.; meat may be added.

• March 9 – March 15 Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m.; meat may be added.

• March 16 – March 26 Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.

Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from your diet or life. One type of fasting is to remove certain foods from your diet, such as fried foods, sweets, sodas, or refined sugar and/or flour.

*Please seek the advice of your primary care provider/doctor before beginning a fast that involves restricting food/calories and/or medication. Your doctor can help you design a fasting plan that protects your health and well-being. This is extremely important if you are pregnant or have a medical condition. Medical condition examples include, but are not limited to those who have a chronic disease such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, recent surgery, etc.

AnnouncementsFebruary is American heart Month

In an effort to increase awareness concerning heart disease, the Immabasi Health and Wellness Ministry would like to share a few educational facts surrounding heart disease and its impact in the African American community on this Valentine’s Day, from our heart to yours: Are you aware that Heart Disease is the #1 killer in the U.S.? A few facts: African Americans and heart Disease

• African Americans are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke than White Americans.1 African American women (49%) and African American men (44%) have higher rates of heart disease than White men (37%) and White women (32%)

• The annual rate of first heart attack and first stroke is higher for African Americans than White Americans.

• Between the ages of 45 and 64, African American men have a 70% higher risk and African American women have a 50% greater risk of developing heart failure than White men and women.

African Americans and Risk Factors

• African American (80%) and Mexican American (78%) women are more likely to be overweight or obese than White women (60%)

• The prevalence of high blood pressure ( hypertension) in African-Americans is among the highest in the world, and its increasing. Rates are particularly high for African-American Women

• African American and Hispanic adults are more likely to be inactive 39.4% and 39.8%, (respectively) than White adults (26.2%)

Although the aforementioned Heart Disease statistics maybe frightening to the African American community it is important to know that Heart Disease and most Risk Factors can be prevented or treated. You can take charge today and manage your own health by:

• Reducing your risk factors. Make simple healthy lifestyle changes; i.e., minimize or eliminate the junk /fried food and stop smoking

• Know your risk factors. Some risk factors you can’t change i.e., age and race. Some you can directly impact; i.e., your weight and daily activity

• Reduce or manage stress through meditation, learning to trust God, etc.• Talk to your doctor

Educational materials are available in the Habari Gani rack located in the Atrium. Feel free to stop by Room 102, follow the directions of the Higi health machine and take your blood pressure. A hypertension seminar will be conducted later this Spring. Please check the bulletin for additional information.

2016 Churchwide Theme and Scriptures

Theme: “The Fruit of The Spirit: Taste and See!”

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

January – LoveHe answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27 (NRSV)

February – JoyNehemiah said, “Go and enjoy good food and sweet drinks. Send some to people who have none, because today is a holy day to the Lord. Don’t be sad, because the joy of the Lord will make you strong.” Nehemiah 8:10 (NCV)

March – PeaceBlessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9 (NIV)

April – PatienceWait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!

Psalm 27:14 (NKJV)

May – Kindness“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other. Zechariah 7:9-10 (NLT)

June – GoodnessWho is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.

James 3:13-14 (NIV)

July – FaithfulnessJesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 (NLT)

August – GentlenessBy the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 2 Corinthians 10:1-3 (NIV)

September – Self ControlSo prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 1 Peter 1:13-14 (NLT)

October – Forgive One AnotherGet rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32 (NLT)

November – Service One AnotherMy brothers and sisters, God called you to be free, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do what pleases your sinful self. Serve each other with love. Galatians 5:13 (NCV)

December – Build Up One AnotherSo encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT)
