F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N TThe Board has been working diligently over the past few months to identify the most important changes that will positively impact the future of the club. In the coming weeks, we will be unveiling a strategic initiative with the goal of addressing a variety of needs and wants over the near and long term future of the club.

This strategic initiative has three core components in support of our mission to be the premier, family-oriented country club. We want to continue to enhance the value of our member experience and service to our members. We want to ensure the long-term success and vibrancy of the club. Finally, we want to be fiscally responsible. Specifically, this initiative will include:

1) Build the membership base and increase the perceived value of membership across all membership classes.

2) Establish a capital structure that ensures long-term financial strength and provides for strategic investments in Chartwell's future.

3) Make strategic investments in Chartwell's facilities that enhance the value of club membership.

These core components will work together to ensure that Chartwell fulfills our mission, and has longevity beyond the here and now. The Board is looking forward to presenting the details of the program at a special meeting to be held May 15th.

EXCITING. NECESSARY. CHALLENGING.Exciting changes have already started. The new member preview program has met with early success beyond the expectations of Creative Golf Marketing. This is great and encouraging news but we still need your help. The program runs through June 15th so you still have time to invite your friends and neighbors to come out and “try” Chartwell.

The new, trial jeans policy has stirred much debate about the evolution of a cultural shift towards casual attire and it’s place within a country club. While I believe it’s important to try new things, I know together, we will ultimately find a common ground that makes sense for Chartwell and our family-oriented, neighborhood club. More exciting changes are on the way.

Change is necessary. Coming out of the worst recession since the Great Depression, we are more sensitive to the fickle nature of the economy and adopting a more conservative financial attitude. In short, we are more debt adverse. Unfortunately, the debt we carry from decades of improvements hinders our ability to continue to improve without action. Every corner of the club has needs and wants from simple maintenance issues to grand plans. Some are necessities while others will be great for attracting new members, retaining existing members and increasing member participation. All cost money and there is neither room, nor appetite for increased debt. Clearly, we are at a critical juncture where change is necessary for continued success.

The latest McMahon Report explains that clubs across the country are working hard to attract new, younger members. A recent survey they conducted showed surprising results. Members under 56 who have joined clubs since 2010 have different priorities in terms of club offerings, golf being the 7th most important.

According to their survey, club offerings that are attracting new, younger members today include:

• Good casual, family and adult dining

• Health/fitness facilities

• Up-to-date swimming facilities

• Family-friendly activities

• Babysitting options

• Good golf practice facilities of all types

• Year-round club activities like platform/paddle tennis, winter activities, social programs and an expanded racquet program for pickle-ball, indoor tennis and squash

“We need to listen to what our younger members (the tail of the Boomers, all of the Gen-Xers and Generation Y or Millennials) are saying. That is, if we want them as members; and, clubs must have them as members if they are going to prosper.”

The McMahon Group is one of the nation’s leading private club consulting firms. You can read more about this latest report and club trends in general at mcmahongroup.com.

One of the challenges for the Board is the responsibility of running a business whose clients are friends and peers. For every decision made, there are always those opposed. And yet, important, and sometimes controversial actions must be taken for the good of the whole and to advance the club in a positive direction. So as your friends and peers, we appreciate your respect and understanding for the challenging responsibility you have bestowed upon us.

The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, “there is nothing permanent except change.” And then Ben Franklin went and added death and taxes. I say “We can change our leaves with the seasons while maintaining our roots.”

F R O M T H E C L U B H O U S EIt’s finally spring in Severna Park and if you are like the rest us, you can’t wait to get outdoors, and what better place to go than Chartwell Golf and Country Club. It has been a tough winter on us all, and at times it seemed to be never ending, but what a welcomed change of scenery! Not only the course, the trees, and fresh air, but to get out connect with some friends you may not have seen for a while. Over the winter it has been great going to Chartwell for dinner, taking part in the wine events, the bourbon tasting, experiencing the new culinary program, the guest bartending nights, Friday night happy hour and all the other indoor club functions. But now it is time to have some fun in and around the clubhouse.

It’s all hands on deck for the numerous new programs and changes underway at the clubhouse. Each specific committee, Michael and his staff are ready to show us the best Chartwell has to offer in 2014. We are working together to focus on food beverage service whether it is for carryout, bar /lounge, or dining. Our website is the best place to be and get updated on the scheduled events, food specials, golf events, social events for family and guests alike. Our website is not only for making tee times through foretees, but for clubhouse dining so please be sure to visit the website often to stay well informed. Making reservations is the single best way we can help the staff provide excellent service. Especially if you have a large group. If you are not able to go online, then just pick up the phone and call. Over the past several months we have seen about a 50 /50 split among walk in service to reservations for dinner. We need everyone’s help to change this ratio for the better. If concerned about using your minimum, come in and eat rather than ordering carryout. We have a large membership and making reservations is respectful to all. If you arrive early even better, stop by the lounge to relax until your table is ready. We have many new wines, beers on tap and other great spirits.

Regarding the carryout service Walter Beller and his staff have implemented some changes to the carry out menu and adjusted the times for order and pick up to ensure your food is serviced timely and to your liking, while not affecting our in house lunch and dining service. Again, the website it the best place to review these changes or just call the clubhouse or utilize the My Club App. Coming soon will be our very own online table reservation application for your smartphone or computer. So when you are out you can quickly reserve the time you will arrive and our staff will be ready and waiting! This service will be specifically for Chartwell members.

The Clubhouse committee is also working to enhance our outdoor amenities. Currently we are working on adding some outdoor fire pits for the patio area. This will be great for relaxing, sitting outside and truly enjoying the grounds and scenery of Chartwell. We have already added some new Adirondack chairs as well.

Many of the ideas we implement come from our member- ship’s thoughts and wishes, so keep the communication open, stay connected, talk your committee members or get involved on a committee. We can always use the help!

See you at the Club!

– Shaun Mahoney

L E T T E R F R O M T H E G E N E R A L M A N A G E RI would like to thank all of you for your continued support of Chartwell Golf and Country Club. Another winter season has passed and it was very successful for adding new members, social functions and increasing our incredible camaraderie.

Although we have had a successful beginning to 2014, any business that thinks they have it all figured out is in trouble. Each month we reflect on the past and seek innovative ways to improve our product and operation. We are constantly evaluating and assessing our current programs and will not hesitate to make the appropriate adjustments if necessary.

In today’s competitive club environment it is imperative that we invest a substantial amount of time and effort in keeping our property and amenities current. Your Board of Directors and Management team spends much of its time thinking of ways to continually improve our overall product. The challenge is to look at our club through the eyes of someone who may be seeing us for the first time. By doing this we can examine our club with a fresh perspective in order to further develop our product and services. Chartwell is now 53 years old and we must keep it current by today’s standard and relevant in a competitive market.

In a recent article by the premier facility planning firm in the country, The McMahon Group, who has served over 1,600 clubs throughout the U.S., Asia, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean explains that the top attractions to Country Clubs as described in Jay Dixon's article.

In addition a few of the top things every well-run club should have include:

• Membership Development Plan

• Marketplace and Competitive Analysis

• Long Range Financial Study

• Asset Reserve Study

• Engaging member Programs

I am happy to say that among the top things we should have, Chartwell already holds 17 items and is in the process of finalizing 6 more of the top 25 on the list.

A few items we have introduced recently have been:

1) Online reservations and table management program

2) New Tennis Programming

3) New Menu designs and nightly specials

4) Monthly Junior events

5) Live music every Friday night

Looking forward, we have a great summer schedule planned for all to appreciate. The pool will open soon, and along with that brings great excitement and programming. Please log on the web site www.chartwellgcc.com, Facebook or our MYCLUB phone app and view all of our upcoming golf, tennis and social events.

“WHILE WE’RE YOUNG!” THE PGA OF AMERICA’S CAMPAIGN AGAINST SLOW PLAY Each year we all strive to become better at the game we have come to love so much. We work with our professional staff on strengthening the parts of our game that need the most attention. This season, I ask all of you to keep in mind, pace of play and how we can all do our part to ensure the enjoyment of our round of golf.

Playing at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the golf course. It is simply about being more efficient with your valuable time, as well as everyone else’s. Adopting this mindset – and not being afraid to share it with your fellow players – will ultimately add enjoyment to your golf experience. Here are some recognized tips for improving pace of play:

START SMART.Confirm your tee time in advance and make it a point to arrive at the tee early with your golf equipment in order, ready to play. Remember essentials like extra golf balls, tees, gloves and

appropriate clothing for the day’s weather conditions.

“TEE IT FORWARD”Play from a set of tees that is comfortable for you – one where you are more likely to hit lofted irons into greens instead of hybrids or fairway woods.

MINIMIZE YOUR TIME ON THE TEE.On the tee it is usually acceptable for players to “hit when ready.”

PLAN YOUR SHOT BEFORE YOU GET TO YOUR BALL.Determine your yardage and make your club selection before it is your turn to play. Very often, you can do this while others are playing, without disruption.

KEEP YOUR PRE-SHOT ROUTINE SHORT.Pick your line of play once and trust yourself. Try to take no more than one practice swing, then set up to the ball and play your shot. Most importantly, be ready to hit when it is your turn.

AIM TO PLAY IN 30 SECONDS.From club selection to pre-shot routine to execution, strive to hit your shot in 30 seconds when it is your turn to play.

WHEN SHARING A CART, USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM.Don’t wait in the cart while your cart mate hits and then drive to your ball. Get out and walk to your ball with a few clubs. Be ready to play when it is your turn and then let your cart mate pick you up. Or, drive to your ball after you drop your cart mate off and then pick him or her up after you hit.

Page 13: Chartwell Chatter May June 2014

12

www.chartwel lgcc.com

KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP IN FRONT OF YOU.Your correct position on the course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you. Arrive at your next shot just before the group in front of you leaves the area in front of you. If you are consistently not able to keep up and a gap opens in front of you, invite the group behind you to play through, irrespective of the number of players in the group.

BE EFFICIENT ON THE PUTTING GREEN.Mark your ball and lift and clean it when you arrive at the putting green so you will be ready to replace it when it is your turn to play. You can usually line up your putt while others are putting, without disturbing them. Leave your clubs on the side of the putting green closest to the next tee, and leave the green promptly after holing out. Wait until the next tee to record your score.

Join us for a night with Anthony Truchard IIThursday, May 22

at 7:00 pm

Anthony Truchard II serves as the General Manager for Truchard Vineyards. In this role, he is responsible for leading the expansion of Truchard Vineyards into several markets, both nationwide and internationally. By developing new ideas while maintaining a strong connection with the vine-yard team and cellar crew, Anthony successfully manages all aspects of the family business.

Anthony grew up running between vines and climbing on tractors. As early as the age of 12, he began working among the vines by helping his father with virtually every element of the vineyard- learning which rootstock to select, planting vines, and irrigation to name a few. In the winery, he racked barrels, punched down wine, and learned the art of blending. Through these hands-on experiences, Anthony learned to appreciate every aspect of winemaking and honed his palate.

His studies took him to Southern California, where he graduated with degrees in Philosophy and Biology from the University of California Santa Barbara. As a university student, he further developed his wine knowledge by working and managing local boutique wine shops and restaurants. These experiences – the interactions with wine lovers in different settings – were his initial lessons in sales and marketing. They helped him gain an ability to appreciate and discern what a customer seeks when selecting a wine, either off a shelf or from a wine list.

Today, alongside his parents, Anthony works incessantly and passionately to maintain the integrity of his family’s wines and loves sharing them with the world.
