The official newsletter for the members of Chartwell Country ClubTRANSCRIPT
May 2011
Ithink the weather is finally going to turn!!!I am very excited about the coming
season at Chartwell. Tad and his staff have
spent a lot of time, and continue to do so,
on planning quality activities and events for
all members of the family.
From the 50th Anniversary activities to
new, creative events to the tried and true
we are hopeful that we will give you and
your family plenty of reason to spend more time at Chartwell.
Communicating these activities to the 700 families that make up
Chartwell is both important and challenging. Aside from the Chartwell
Planner look to find out what is going on through email blasts,
the Chartwell website and the weekly message…if you do not
get regular emails from Chartwell please call the main office to
confirm your email address.
The Strategic Planning process is well under way with the
enterprise groups (golf, clubhouse, greens, tennis and pool)
reporting into Mark Brugnoli (Chair – Strategic Planning) and
his committee and the operating committees (membership,
social, finance) providing support and input. As most of you
are aware a very detailed strategic plan was developed in 2007
and 2008 by the BOD only to be shelved because of the economy and
mother nature. With the economy starting to gain traction we are
updating the strategic plan. We hope to have strategic planning reports
done by the end of April and then the BOD will make some decisions
on what can be added/changed. The summer will be spent budgeting
the various items and also coming up with a viable financial plan to
turn the strategic plan into a reality. Our plan is to have the strategic
plan, budgets/costing and financial options done by early Fall.

2 CHARTWELL COUNTRY CLUB
C hartwell Season is fast approaching! Along with the Club operating on all
cylinders, we also have the excitement of the Club’s 50th Anniversary. While the
past New Year’s Eve Gala officially welcomed the Club’s 50th year, celebrations kick
off this month. On May 30th, exactly 50 years to the day, we will celebrate Chartwell’s
grand opening. Memorial Day 1961 ushered in “AA’s New County Club.” (See a copy
of the announcement on pages 4–5.) Al Merritt, the Club and community developer
hit the first ball down #1 while his son, Mel ran after it! It was memorable day that
launched this prestigious club.
Please join your fellow members in remembering, celebrating and toasting Chartwell
Memorial Day weekend. On Friday evening a Club wide cocktail party will be set in
the 1960’s with a “Hamlin’s” style piano bar, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Please
make reservations for both the party and dining reservations. The party will be
preceded by a tennis exhibition featuring current and past Club Pros.
Memorial Day will host a reenactment of the Club’s Opening Day 50 years ago,
followed by a reception in the bar and an 18 Hole Mixer. Of course the pool and
family barbecue will be open through the day, too.
It is an exciting time to be part of Chartwell. The staff and I look forward to seeing
you often through the Chartwell Season. And thank you for letting us be part of this
wonderful club. Let me acknowledge the corps of leaders and volunteers helping to
make this year as memorable as Year One, particularly Hayes and Molly Merkert,
Chairmen of the 50th Anniversary, their committee, including Tom McCann and the
Historical Committee. Tom specifically continues to champion the gathering and
documentation of the Club’s archives. No easy task! We are still accepting classic
photos and memorabilia. If you wish to retain these items, we would be happy to
scan what you have and return them to you.
Happy Golden Anniversary, Chartwell.

From The President
continued from front cover
The club continues to run ahead of budget despite rising
costs for food, utilities and other commodities. Membership
also continues to be strong and with that dues income. On
April 8th the Membership Committee hosted an Open House
for prospective members. The turnout was the best we have
had in a few years and the BOD along with the membership
committee is confident that we are going to be able to grow
membership during the year. This is the first year in a while
that we have felt we were not on the fence about which way
the membership numbers would go. Thanks to Tim Connolly
and his committee for their work and effort that they have
put in.
In January, the BOD had a planning session to go over
priorities for the year. One of the items that we discussed is
service on a member owned board versus a corporate
board. The biggest difference in terms of governance is
with transparency. As a board member of a member
owned entity transparency is not only vital but expected. I
am comfortable to say that the line can be drawn with
human resource issues and conceptual items. Club finances,
business relationships and any type of planning are always
an open book and the BOD fully understands their
obligations. I encourage anyone to contact the BOD or
Tad if they have any questions about any aspect of the
club. As always, you can reach me directly by email
[email protected] or by cell at 240-882 2459. I
look forward to seeing you at the club enjoying your day.
See you at Chartwell.

4 CHARTWELL COUNTRY CLUB
It all began with one swing of a
persimmon driver. Al Merritt
had the honors that opening
day in 1961. There was a
cutting. Then with head pro
Steve Tobash and Bill Dixon,
who’d done the legal work,
awaiting their turn, the
developer and founder of
Chartwell Golf and Country club
hit the first ball. It was a little bit
of a slice that started out down
the left side. Al’s ten year old son
Mel ran down the fairway to
retrieve it. Mr. Merritt signed the
ball and Mel has it to this day, with
a little smudge of ink still visible.
He also recalls that he didn’t have
that far to run to shag the ball. His
dad didn’t hit much of a drive but
just being able to stand on the tee
box that day was accomplishment
enough.
The golf course had been carved out of raw briar choked
woods. The land had been an active farm up until the
1930’s but was abandoned after a prohibition era still
blew up and burned the main house to the ground. When
construction on the club
started only a foundation remained up on top of the hill.
The remains of a barn had to be removed to make room
for the 18th green. There were no tennis courts and the
pool wouldn’t open up for another year. A simple pro
shop stood where the grill room is now the bar was at the
ballroom end of the building.

BOARD ROOM NEWSFINANCE
With five months of the fiscal year under our belt, the
bottom line reflects a profit of $87,472, $7,000 ahead of
projections. Dues income continues to be better than
expected attributable to consistent membership numbers.
Departmental expenses and utilities are being well
controlled and are $28,000 better than budget for the year to
date. The Food and Beverage department is behind targets
due to a sluggish winter in the banquet area. However,
strong bookings for the spring and summer should help to
alleviate the revenue shortfall.
CLUBHOUSE
• An expanded and improved patio continues to be a
focus of the committee as it works on design, serv-
ice logistics and costs.
MEMBERSHIP
• Welcome to the Club’s newest members:
Joan Clarke (Social)
Stephen & Christine Halligan ( Tennis)
Edward & Deborah Cook (Tennis)
• The recent Open House for prospective members
was very successful as the Board, Membership
Committee and Staff met twenty-two potential
member families. Chairman Tim Connolly and the
Committee is very busy interviewing and promoting
the Club. It is important that all members recognize
and recommend prospective future members.
• A reminder of the current Membership are:
° Social & Tennis membership applicants can
spread their initiation payments ($3,500 and
$5,000, respectively) over 3-years ($1,166.67 and
$1,666.67 per year). Golf membership applicants
can spread their initiation payments over
5-years ($5,000).
° Legacy membership applicants, (immediate
family of past or current members in good
standing), membership dues and capital fee will
be reduced to $300 per month until January
2012. Initiation fee can still be spread out over
10-years ($2,500 per year).
TENNIS / POOL
• The Pool officially opens Saturday, May 28 with
Memorial Day bbq and activities on Monday, May
30.
• Swim Team home meets are scheduled for 6/25, 7/2,

start Tuesday, May 31.
• The Committee is coordinating the first official 50th
Anniversary event on Friday, May 27 with a tennis
mixed doubles exhibition with Jamie, Adam, Kathy,
and Terry Gaskill, former pro at Chartwell. A Club-
wide classic cocktail party reminiscent of the old
“Hamlin’s” will follow.
• Planning and fundraising for the Chartwell Classic is
underway. The event has been streamlined as a
men’s only event. Last year this mid-Atlantic
recognized event brought world ranked tennis
players with a purse over $30,000. It is scheduled
for August 9–14.
• Team Tennis sign ups start in May.
• The bubble is scheduled to be taken down May 3
(weather permitting). The last day of indoor

golf event, staff has been assigned as point people
for each group: Matt Johnson – All men’s
tournaments and events; Carl Jones – All women’s
tournaments and events; and, Chris McBee – Juniors
Events.
• The Committee is focusing its opening season
attention on “fast play.” Look for fun, creative and
challenging ways to speed up play on the course.
• The golf calendar is online for your reference.

Tips From Maintenance
Ceiling Fan Direction Spring / Summer
The basic fact of nature is that warm air rises to
the top and cold air settles on the bottom. Air
settles in layers from warm at the top to cold at
the bottom, if left alone at equilibrium. You
should operate your fan so that it turns clockwise (this looks
counterclockwise as you are looking up), causing a more directed
downdraft, especially with the fan running slightly faster. However,
the air is only moved, not cooled! You may find that you can open the
window and get the cool evening air to save money on energy costs.
Change Refrigerator Water Filter
Filters that don't efficiently remove contaminants and impurities may
expose you to harmful water.
Follow water filter instructions, as all water filters are different
depending on model.
Change the filter every 3–6 months depending on water condition
and usage.
Clean Dryer Exhaust
Lint in your dryer exhaust is a fire hazard; clean the exhaust
annually.
Loosen the clamp and pull the exhaust off the back of the dryer.
Remove clumps of lint from the tubing and the hole in the back of the
dryer, vacuum all the small lint then reattach exhaust.
Also even though you cannot see it use hot soapy water and scrub
the dryer filter it has an invisible film that you cannot see from the
soap residues that restrict proper air flow. You can check this by
putting water on the filter and see if it goes through the mesh if it
does you are ready to go!
If you ever need any advice on maintenance issues you can email me
I look forward to seeing you at the club!

New Faces
Executive Chef Chad Stein
The search for Chartwell’s next “top
chef” has finally concluded with the
recent hiring of Chad Stein. After
looking across the country and
interviewing a very impressive slate
of the best candidates, we found
Chad in our own back yard. Chad will
begin his culinary leadership in mid-
May.
Executive Chef Chad Stein was raised in Owings Mills where
he attended Jemicy School and graduated from Boys Latin.
Chad’s love of cooking began as a youngster when he helped
his mother prepare for cooking classes that she taught in
their home.
Chef Chad’s formal culinary training began at the University
of Delaware, where he graduated with honors from the
school of Restaurant and Hotel Management. After working
on the Spirit of Alaska for a year as a cook, Chad graduated
from the Baltimore International College of Culinary Arts
where he achieved the Presidential List of Merit
His outstanding culinary skills, teaching and management
abilities and passion for cooking were further honed during
his 5 year affiliation at the 5 Star, 5 Diamond Broadmoor
Hotel in Colorado Springs and the Ritz Carlton in Washington
D.C. After moving back to the east coast, he continued his
career by entering the Country Club industry. Chef Chad was
the Executive Sous Chef at the prestigious Belle Haven
Country Club in Alexandria, Virginia where he helped debut
the impressive new clubhouse. Most recently he was the
Executive Chef of Chestnut Ridge Country Club for the last
four years.
Chad is known for his upscale a la cart dining, attention to
taste and details and his exceptional presentations which
often include edible garnishes. Many times his dishes are
inspired from his time spent traveling and cooking in Alaska,
Australia, Singapore and Colorado. No request is too difficult
for Chef Chad.
Chad and his wife Monica live in Timonium with their 4 year
old son Ryan and 1 year old son Dylan.

Lightning Policy
for
Golf – Tennis – Pool
A dangerous weather condition exists when the
siren is sounded for one long blast. All players (golf
and tennis), swimmers and Chartwell personnel
must take shelter or leave the golf course, practice
facilities, tennis courts or swimming pool until the
"reduced danger" signal is given. The "reduced
danger" signal is three short blasts two seconds
apart.

Please refer to the 2011 Chartwell Membership Roster for
complete pool rules. Some specific rules to highlight:
3.2. Children under the age of 8 must have adult supervision with
adult supervision defined as someone at least 12 years old.
3.2.1 Parents and/or guardians of children between the ages of 8
and 12 must annually provide the Pool Manager with
emergency phone numbers and other pertinent information
as well as the phone number and location of their legal or
designated guardian who would be immediately available to
respond to an emergency or discipline situation. The
intention of this rule is to accommodate parents on club
property, in their homes or in the immediate vicinity of the
club. It is not intended that parents at work, shopping or
other activities, which would preclude an immediate
response, allow their children at the pool without adult
supervision.
4.2 All children under 12, including guests must report to the
head guard on duty and pass a deep-water test before being
permitted unrestricted use of the large pool. Member
children must pass this test annually.
There are three (3) versions of the swim test.
(1) For 8-12 year olds, unsupervised in pool
area, children must be able to swim the two
full lengths of the pool with viable swim
stroke and tread water for 90- seconds.
(2) For Deep Water and diving board access,
children must be able to swim the full length
of the pool and tread water for 60-seconds.
(3) For Shallow Water access without parental
or adult within arm length, children must be
able to swim the width of the pool.
Please note that at any time, based on the guards’
discretion, a child may be requested to perform a swim test
again, even if that child has passed it before. This is solely
to protect fatigued swimmers.
