By now you should recognize that I prefer to cut

right to the point. Here are some comments,

questions and issues that Tad, the Board and I are

often asked:

1. “The Club has too much debt.” Actually, we have reduced debt by over

$500,000 in the last two fiscal years and our debt is $7.7 million.

Approximately, the same level of debt we had ten years ago. We have

actually deleveraged as a percent of revenues. Revenues up 40%, debt up

10%.

2. “Chartwell used all the Capital Reserve to fund the dam.” Not true. We

maintained $750,000 in our Capital Reserve fund. This is cash available for

catastrophic events (i.e. membership drops by 50%).

3. The Dam cost approximately $1.7 million and we paid for it with the $2.2

million of cash proceeds from the loan refinancing we did in 2008. We,

therefore, have $500,000 ($2.2 million minus $1.7 million) cash available

for capital improvements. Both, the standing Committees and the Board,

are reviewing the capital expenditure priorities for fiscal 2011.

As club championships get underway, we recognize the pinnacle of each sports

season. Swim team, juniors, women, men and seniors each have the opportunity

to put forth their best, putting to use the many hours of practice over this past

summer. To those champions already determined: Congratulations! To the upcoming

tournament participants: Good luck! The Golf and Tennis Awards Banquet has been

combined this year with OktobeRoast, Saturday, October 23. It is our hope that the

whole club will come out to celebrate the Fall festivities and the Club Champions!

The symbiotic relationship between the Club’s committees and management are

integral to the organization of the Club. The partnership between membership

leaders and staff enable the Club to initiate planning processes, allow the

appropriation of funds for operating and capital requirements and continue the

dedication to the Club’s mission of being the prominent family-oriented golf and

country club of region.

This committee system is the lifeblood of the Club. And certainly, the Club could not

meet its members’ expectations nearly as well without it. There are nine standing

committees that work to support the Board of Directors and management.

Additionally, there are numerous other groups that coordinate the activities of the

Club. Every single person who serves at the liberty of the Club on one of these

groups or committees does so as an un-paid volunteer. Even though it too frequently

goes without saying: thank you to all who selflessly donate their time, talents and

energy to the betterment of the Club.

I would assume by now, you are expecting a pitch. Well, here it is: with the Annual

Meeting scheduled for October 26 and the usual transitions in committee leadership,

please consider volunteering in some capacity. Feel free to let the current Committee

chairmen or me know of your interest.this Fall!

From The President…continued from page 1…

4. “I never want jeans in the clubhouse!” or, “I want jeans in the club house!” This is

still a controversial subject. In 2010, we experimented with “event” selected jeans

policy. Jeans were encouraged for events like the OktobeRoast party and after

9:30 PM in the bar on select Friday and Saturday nights. No easy answer here. We

will continue to evaluate the policy and try different approaches. Let’s be

courteous with each other as we work to find a solution.

5. “How are the membership levels?” We are in a great position relative to levels at

other clubs. Golf is 98% full, we have 10 slots open. Tennis is off at 18%, down 21

members and social is even at 139 members. We are heading into a period where

we may lose a few members. However, Dave Nocar and his Membership

Committee are working diligently to continue to attract new members and retain

the existing membership. It up to each of us to promote membership to our Club.

6. “Why don’t we have a program for seniors like other clubs?” We continue to

review this subject. And no surprise, there are definitely opinions on both sides. I

prefer to think of this as a “Loyalty Program” where the marginal benefit to the

member is significantly greater than the marginal cost to the club. Chartwell is

continuing to consider the development of a program. More to come.

7. Cell phones? Another somewhat controversial subject. Cell phones are allowed in

the parking lot, private rooms and the locker rooms. Not on the golf course, or

golf cart area in front of the pro shop. Here again, please be courteous to other

members. If you take a call, be aware of your location and surroundings and move

to the appropriate area if necessary. Simple, right?

8. “Why are the Club’s guest policies inconsistent across the different services we

offer (pool, tennis, golf & clubhouse)?” We are reviewing guest policies across all

services this fall and winter. The golf committee is ahead of schedule and already

has some specific recommendations and changes. Tennis has made some

changes, but continues to look at the overall policies; pool and clubhouse are

next. The key is to balance revenue, service and membership requirements.

Thanks for your patience.

9. Let’s be courteous to each other. We have experienced and resolved some

extraordinary issues the last few years, both externally (the economy) and

internally (the dam). Although we are not totally “out of the woods” with these

problems, they appear to be behind us. Now we are back to basics, striving for

better financial performance, improving member services and prioritizing capital

requirements. As we, the members, work through these routine issues, let’s just

be courteous to each other and enjoy the benefits of Chartwell.

CHARTWELL CHATTER SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2010 5

Nominating Committee

Candidates for the Board of Directors

The Nominating Committee, chaired by Past President Chris

Persico, has presented three candidates for the Board of

Directors election to take place at this year’s Annual

Meeting, Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Additional nominations

may only be made by placing the names of the nominees,

over the signatures of at least thirty-five memberships on

the bulletin board of the Club and delivering a copy to the

Secretary, no less than thirty days prior to the annual

meeting. (Chartwell Membership, Inc. By-laws, Article III –

Meetings and Elections, Section 7 – Additional Nominations.)

J. Timothy “Tim” Connolly

As a 15 year A-member of our

Club, I am pleased to be

nominated to serve on the Board

of Directors of Chartwell Country

Club.

Since 1995 my family and I have

enjoyed the many amenities of

the Club. My wife, Molly and

sons Tim and Patrick have participated in golf, junior golf,

swimming, and the many social events offered, and over the

years we have watched CGCC grow. Since becoming a

member of our Club, I have served on the Membership

Committee, Social Committee, Golf Committee, and Chair of

the Men’s Wednesday Night Golf League.

Over the years, we have seen the Club move toward an

emphasis on the younger generation, which I strongly

support. The Board and the leadership of Chartwell have

done a terrific job in bringing in new programs and activities,

such Parental Freedom Night, costume parties at Halloween,

family Christmas receptions, the Easter Egg Hunt, and the

4th of July pool bash. These activities truly foster a family

feeling at the Club, and as a member of the Board, I will work

toward enhancing these programs even further.

Many kids who “grow up” at Chartwell “become adults” at

Chartwell, and this is what our Club needs — Generational

Membership. The Legacy Membership Program is a perfect

way to usher our kids in to membership, carrying on our

Club’s strong tradition and enhancing the “Chartwell Life.”

After serving 24 years as a Special Agent in the United States

Secret Service, I took my security background to the Johns

Hopkins Medical Institutions, where I served as Senior

Director of Corporate Security for 15 years. Now retired, and

a frequent golfer, I have the time and desire to support my

club in serving on the Board of Directors.

Charles (Buck) Linthicum

I am honored to be nominated to

run for the Board of Directors of

Chartwell. My wife, Gwyn and I

have been members of Chartwell

for 13 years. If elected, I look

forward to helping the club main-

tain and improve its reputation

as one of the finest clubs in the

state of Maryland. As Chartwell

celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, my only regret is

not having joined the club years earlier. Having been raised

in Severna Park, I must admit I am old enough to remember

playing the Chartwell golf course, as a high school senior,

the first year the club’s course was open. My golf game is

not much better, but the course most certainly is!

I earned my Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from

Virginia Tech. in 1967. I served as an active duty officer in

the US Army from 1968–1970 which included a 9 month tour

of duty in RVN, after which I returned to Virginia Tech and

received a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering. Having been

a co-op student with Baltimore Gas & Electric throughout my

Page 6: Chartwell Chatter Sept-Oct Issue

6 CHARTWELL COUNTRY CLUB

CLUBHOUSEundergraduate years, I resumed my career with them and

remained there for 36 years, retiring in 2002. I worked on the

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Plant and was the Project Manager for

a major Hyrdoelectric Project and a Coal fired Power Plant

before moving to Constellation Power, a non-regulated

subsidiary of Consellation Energy, for the last ten years of

my career. At retirement I was a Vice President with

Constellation Power, where I was responsible for the

business management of their portfolio of US and

International alternative energy Independent Power Plants.

As most of these investments were partnerships, I served on

dozens of joint ownership boards of control and was

President of Constellation Operating Services, the company

which provided operating personnel to many of the plants.

At Chartwell I have led the men’s Senior Golf Program for

about 8 years, serving as their representative on the Golf

Committee throughout that period. Gwyn is also an active 18

hole golfer as well as a tennis player. With 2 of our 4

grandchildren living in the area, we are also making more

use of the club’s excellent pool facilities! Gwyn and I attend

many of the social functions at the club as we enjoy

supporting the club’s social activities as well.

I am pleased to be nominated, and if elected I will work hard

to serve all the members while expanding upon Chartwell’s

Tradition of Excellence.

Lee A, Meyers, D.D.S.–2010

I am honored to be nominated to

be a candidate for The Board of

Directors of Chartwell Golf and

Country Club. As one of the

premier clubs in Maryland I am

very excited to have this

opportunity. I served on the

House Committee in 2009–2010

and as a board member I would

continue to work hard to maintain the tradition and integrity

that has earned Chartwell its stellar reputation.

My wife, Monica, and I have been lifelong residents of

Maryland and along with our three children; Sam (16),

Matthew (14) and Molly (8) have been active members of the

club for 12 years and have deep roots in the community. We

believe Chartwell is an extension of our home and use the

club not only for recreational and social activities, but take

pride in entertaining our family and friends at Chartwell.

Additionally, one of our greatest joys is nurturing friendships

with other members and the staff. The entire family enjoys

all that the club has to offer from golf tournaments and swim

team, to the many social activities in which we are involved.

Professionally I have owned my own dental practice for 22

years. I hold a B.A. from Western Maryland College and a

D.D.S. from University of Maryland Dental School. In addition

to general dentistry, my practice focuses on cosmetic and

restorative dentistry. Because dentistry is a service

business, I have made a strong commitment to continue my

training in customer service and management at The

Scottsdale Center for Dentistry.

I have been an avid golfer my entire life as well as serving

ten years as a caddie at Congressional Country Club and

have had memberships at other private clubs. This

experience has given me a strong appreciation for the

traditions, customs and expectations of private club

members. My vision for Chartwell is to continue to be a

financially strong and family-oriented club that offers top-

notch amenities and attracts members that share the same

vision. My goal is for Chartwell to continue to grow and

thrive so that our special tradition can be enjoyed by the

generations that will follow us.

Thank you once again for the nomination; it would truly be

an honor and a pleasure to serve on the Board of Directors

of Chartwell.

A glorious and

busy weekend!

The interclub

match with

Chartwell Golf

and Country

Club was a huge

success.

Eight doubles

(men's, mixed and women) matches and two singles

matches contested on Saturday with Sea Colony pulling out

a 7–3 win. Half of the ten matches were decided by third set

Tie Breakers. In addition, a pro exhibition featuring Sea

Colony Tennis pros Alex Justiniani and Ryan Kent and

Chartwell's Adam Schagter and Jamie Peterson, was

watched by the day's participants. This time Chartwell

proved victorious with a hard fought 8–4 win.

On Sunday an additional two singles matches and another

six doubles matches were played. Once again, Sea Colony

came out victorious. Besides the great tennis, all the

players had a great time and we will do it again next year!

USGA Course Rating

During August 2010, qualified personnel from the

Maryland State Golf Association completed a

course rating of Chartwell from the men’s tees.

A USGA Course Rating is the USGA’s evaluation

of the playing difficulty of a course for scratch

golfers under normal course and weather

conditions for the purpose of providing a

uniform basis on which to issue USGA Handicap

Indexes. It is expressed as strokes taken to one

decimal place, and is based on yardage and

other obstacles to the extent that they affect the

scoring ability of a scratch player.

A USGA Slope Rating evaluates the relative

playing difficulty of a course for players who are

not scratch golfers. The lowest USGA Slope

Rating is 55 and the highest is 155. A course of

standard difficulty has a USGA Slope Rating of

113.

The new ratings of Chartwell are:

USG Course Rating / Slope

CHARTWELL CHATTER SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2010 23

At the University of Maryland MISGA outing on July 7th, Sam Montgomeryrepresented the Chartwell seniors on the winning team. The MISGA mixerwith Piney Branch/ Sparrows Point on July 13th had a great turnout. Thefirst place team was aided by Mike Onarato and Gene Merkert, with a 120.The second place team members included Bob O’Leary and John Boylan, and Jim Uhles with Sam Montgomery were on the tie-breaking third placeteam, finishing with a 122. The seniors hosted the state wide finals for the MISGA ABCD Tournamenton July 26th. We had one player, John Hannou, qualify for this tournamentat Tantallon earlier this summer. The ABCD is an individual tournament-- divided into 4 flights based on handicaps. Next Chatter we will have thefinal results.

Thanks to the seniors who helped with the Juniors Program on July 16th, avery hot Friday. The tournament organizers and the 92 Juniors really appreciated the help from Buck and Gwyn Linthicum, Rick Hunsicker, BobSchnabel, Bob Kessler, and Jim Uhles.

The MISGA outings are excellent opportunities for seniors to visit a varietyof golf courses throughout our area, meeting their senior members and enjoying great food at bargain prices. Visit the Chartwell website and clickon Events to sign up for the outings at the clubs that we will be visiting andplaying with the clubs that will be coming here.

September sees the last of the hot summer days and a return to cooler, more comfortable temperatures. This

also signals the time to plan for the fall and get your plants

ready for the next growing season.

WHAT’S COLORFUL IN SEPTEMBER?

Crape myrtle, fruit on viburnum, fruit on pyracantha, fruit

on holly, asters, black-eyed susan, blue mist shrub.

ANNUALS

Summer annuals are winding down and plans should be

made for the fall planting. The most common annuals for

the fall are pansies, cabbage/kale, mums, asters, and back-

eyed susans (many nurseries are now growing these as

annuals). These choices provide a variety of colors, bloom

times & lengths. Most pansies have the advantage that they

will over winter and be ready to go with the first signs of

spring.

BEDS

First, continue to weed the beds as

needed. Next, as the annuals finish and are

no longer providing ornamental value,

remove them from the bed. The same

applies to perennials, however, with perennials, you will

only be removing the foliage and flower; leave the roots.

This is important because dead plant material that remains

in the bed provides a great place for disease and insects to

over winter, leading to problems next season. Third, this is

also the time to plan and order spring bulbs (crocus,

daffodils, tulips, etc.) for planting in October. Don’t think it

is too early to order bulbs because most companies won’t

ship them until it is the right planting time for your area.

Like the fall annuals, these bulbs come in a wide range of

colors and bloom times and, if planned correctly, can

provide color from February/March through till May. Finally, now would be a great opportunity to install any

woody plants or perennials. Fall is the best time because

there is usually sufficient moisture and the ground

temperatures are much warmer than in the spring and, as a

result, the plant will establish more quickly.

TREES

Fertilizing your trees this time of year is ideal. However,

over fertilizing or using high nitrogen fertilizer will affect

the fall color. Too much fertilizer or a high nitrogen

fertilizer will cause the tree to continue to produce

chlorophyll which will mask or mute the fall colors.

Remember the pigments that produce the fall color are in

the leaves all year, but it is the reduced chlorophyll

production that allows those colors to be seen. The

fertilizer will provide nutrients to the trees that will be used

for good root growth and increase the trees survivability

through the winter. The fertilizer will also help increase the

food reserves for the tree so the tree will be ready for a

quick start in the spring.

TURF

The turf should have been aerified in August so, if you did

not follow that up with seeding last month, you

can still seed during the beginning of this

month. If your plans are to completely

renovate the lawn, this is the time to do that,

either with sod or seed. The seed must make

good contact with the soil which is why you

should loosen the soil, either by aerating or

slicing the soil. The same for sod- the roots must make

good contact with the soil in order for it to establish. Also,

make sure you keep the sod and seed moist until seed

germination or until the sod’s roots grow. For established

turf areas, fall is the time for your final fertilizer

application. You should now fertilize with 1–1½ lbs. N in

slow release form. This will provide the turf with the

necessary nutrients for the fall and also get it ready for the

spring.
