F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N TI am very proud of this year’s board and some of the challenges we faced and the issues we’ve tackled. Change isn’t easy, but without change there can be no progress.

The Board must always take a long-term view of our finances, facilities and operations, all of which are intimately tied to membership and member satisfaction.

This year, we recognized there were challenges with our financial structure that would have a long lasting impact on the club if we ignored them.

First, we addressed membership acquisition by implementing what has been the most successful membership drive in recent history. However, there is still work to be done to attract new members.

We also addressed member retention by modifying the accessibility to the Golf B category allowing our legacy members who have already given so much to the club a cost saving alternative. Moving forward, we will explore further modifying this category by making it a true Senior Golf category with no restrictions to play.

We recently modified the senior social membership making it more of a value for those members 70 years old or better.

We addressed the debt. We recognized the potential challenges of refinancing in 2018 and developed a pro-active program that enables us to pay the debt down to a workable amount as well as build capital for the future.

We have put into place a financial strategy to achieve a break-even operating budget and to break the cycle of offsetting operational loses with initiation revenue, which should be reserved for capital maintenance and improvements.

We have spent the better part of the past 20 years accumulating debt and offsetting operational losses with initiation income. It will take some time to recognize the benefits of the changes we’ve implemented, but I believe we will be stronger for it.

We recognize that member satisfaction is a critical component for success and this begins with outstanding service. We understand that this effort is never complete. Perfection may not be attainable but that shouldn’t dissuade us from trying. We will continue to work on all aspects of improving member satisfaction.

It has been my honor to represent the Club as Board President over the past year. I would like to thank the entire Board for their time and commitment to improving our club. I’d also like to thank Michael and his team for their continued effort delivering service excellence.

F R O M T H E C L U B H O U S EWell it is that time of year, the Holidays, first Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then Hanukah among others and finally New Years. As we approach this joyous time of the year, our calendars become even busier than before. How will we fit all the activities in the day, the evening, the weeks and the months? How will we attend all the events, regardless of gathering with family, relatives, old friends, and neighbors, not to mention the travel? Well we always seem to accomplish this every year and make it through the holidays, but how? Well, it takes a tremendous amount of organization, planning and consistency. It is perhaps the busiest time of the year for all, especially for our Chartwell staff, and under the management of our experienced staff this is when they really shine.

Chartwell provides a seamless transition into each holiday, with excellent menu choices, events and functions. The holiday season at Chartwell is just wonderful. You know when you enter Chartwell; you will be greeted with a pleasant smile, providing all that feeling of home, warm, inviting, and comfortable with beautiful decorations all around. The smell of incredible food, the warmth of the fireplace and the chatter of friends reminiscing about the great times had. If you have family visiting, treat them to all that Chartwell has to offer especially this time of year and I am sure you will not be disappointed. Even if you need a private room for a family gathering, Chartwell can assist.

We have had many changes at Chartwell this year and the Board has had to make some tough decisions all in the best interest of the club and it's members. It has all lead up to where we are now, a place where we can deliver the dining and service levels a Chartwell member expects and deserves. Chartwell is in great shape and improving every day. With the conclusion of another season of swimming, tennis and golfing and the beginning of the holiday season, we now migrate inside to enjoy our home away from home, Chartwell. With our members’ food suggestions, the house committee has worked with Food and Beverage, wait staff, and Chef to enhance the menu and service levels. In coming weeks, you will see these new menu items, several new items

and some old favorites with a new flare, but all highly creative and flavorful. Both the Preswick bar and the Dining room will offer these incredible appetizers and entrees to satisfy your culinary desires. Please be sure to ask your servers for wine pairings as well.

As always, if you have any suggestions please reach out to a house committee member, board member or

management and we will do our best to accommodate and provide the consistent service you have become

accustomed too.

M E N ’ S C L U B C H A M P I O N S H I P U P D AT EIn the month of September we crown all of our Club Champions. The Men’s Club Championship starts out with a 36-Hole, stroke play qualifier. The golf course already played long due to the wet conditions leading up to the event. The combination of difficult hole locations and wind resulted in scores being much higher than years past.

The qualifier set the stage for match play. On Saturday, September 20th the first round matches were played for all flights. It was a perfect morning and conditions were ideal for scoring. The closest match of the morning was between the two seed, Mark Shwetz and 2013 runner up, Mike Winters. After a seesaw battle for 18-holes, it was Mike Winters who prevailed into the semi-finals.

The following day our semi-final matches took place as defending Champion, Kevin Ross and Mike Winters squared off for the second time in the past two years. Mike Winters was determined to return to the Championship Final for the second straight year. He proved he belonged amongst the best players in the club, defeating Kevin Ross on the 15th hole. On the other side of the bracket, David Nocar Jr. and John Dixon battled for the final spot in the Championship match. It was the 17 time Club Champion that made a statement beating John Dixon on the 11th hole of regulation.

On Saturday, September 27th David Nocar Jr. and Mike Winters were the last two standing on the 1st tee as they began their 36-hole championship match. David got off to a shaky start three putting the first hole for a loss. However, he came back strong making birdies on the 2nd, 4th, 5th & 8th holes, to take a 5up lead after the front

nine. Mike continued to fight and won the 18th to go 4 down heading into the afternoon.

After a short lunch break, David got right back to work making birdie on the 19th hole of regulation and never looked back, as he played flawless golf hitting fairways and greens. After a brilliant approach shot on the 11th to 5ft, Mike faced a slick downhill slider for birdie hoping to gain some momentum. However, Mike missed the tricky putt and found himself 7 down with 7 to play. Both players made par on the 12th giving David a 7 & 6 victory and his 18th Men’s Club Championship title.

Congratulations to both competitors for all of their accomplishments this past season.

L A D I E S 1 8 - H O L E C L U B C H A M P I O N S H I PThe 2014 Ladies Club Championship displayed two of Chartwell’s top female players. Tricia Bell and Wendy Bradford went head to head for this year’s championship. Tricia started off steady getting out to a three up lead through the first five holes. Her third shot on the par four 5th hole ended up within 3 feet of the cup, winning her the hole and giving her some momentum. Wendy had some opportunities over the next few holes, and was able to get the match to two down at the turn. The back nine started with both players trading off holes. Tricia ended the match with a par on the 15th hole to win 4 & 3. Congratulations to Tricia on her first Ladies Club Championship victory!! This year’s Championship also featured three flighted divisions. The first flight was won on the 20th hole with Cathy Masek defeating Tammy Pietsch. Margie McFarland continued her good play defeating Lauren Staines in the second flight. Cindy Franchak defeated Sue Brown to capture the title in the third flight. Thank you to all players for participating!!

S E N I O R C L U B C H A M P I O N S H I PThe 2014 Senior Club Championship featured two of Chartwell’s most accomplished players. David Nocar Jr. squared off against John Dixon, in what was sure to be a terrific match. Both players started off hot with Nocar making birdie on both the 1st & 2nd holes to take an early 2 up lead. Dixon battled back with a birdie of his own on the 3rd to pull back to 1 down. They both played the next 5 holes even up before Nocar rolled in a birdie putt on 9 to regain his 2 up lead at the turn. the next 4 holes & Dixon found himself 4 down through 13. He knew he had to make something happen, and he did. Dixon rolled in a 30’ birdie putt on #14 & followed with another birdie on #15 to pull the match back to 2 down. However, this is as close as Dixon would get, Nocar sealed the victory with a par on #17. Both players played extremely well in the match with 7 birdies between the pair. Congratulations to both players on a well-played match!

L A D I E S 9 - H O L E C L U B C H A M P I O N S H I PThis year’s 9 Hole Club Championship was a tight race between many players. Judi Emmel and Konni Bringman distanced themselves from the pack after both shooting under 50 in the first round. Judi shot a solid round of 46 to take a one shot lead over Konni after round one. Konni’s great round of 47 was her first time breaking 50! Course

conditions toughened for the second round. Konni continued her great play with a score of 51 giving her a two day total of 98, which was good enough to win by 2 shots over Judi. Her total of 98 left her as the only player in the field to break 100! Congratulations to both players on a great tournament. There were also two flighted divisions in this year’s championship. The first flight was won by Cindy Root, and Kate Hite finished in the runner-up position. The second flight was won by Amy Buxton and Sharon Hunsicker was the runner-up. Thank you to all the ladies that participated.

9 - H O L E I N T E R C L U B T O U R N A M E N T O F C H A M P I O N SCongratulations to Kate Garmey, this season’s 9-Hole Interclub Champion. As a result, Kate was selected to represent Chartwell in the 9-Hole Interclub Tournament of Champions being held at the Gibson Island Club. The field is made up of 11 players representing their respective clubs as interclub champions, making it the strongest interclub field of the season. After the opening ceremony, the players take to the golf course in a net stroke play competition against the field. Kate played great, using her short game & solid ball striking to par the 2 hardest holes on the golf course on her way to a net 34 tying her with two other players. Kate finished in 3rd place overall after the playoff. Congratulations to Kate on a great season!
