1961As I complete my first full month at
Chartwell, I cannot help but be extremely
excited about our future. Fall has always
been a special time for me—a transition
into a season of activity, projects and new
programs. I enjoy watching the leaves turn
colors and the season change. For some, it
is also a time of introspection. Similarly,
for us, fall is a time when evaluation and
planning becomes crucial. This month will begin a new focus on strategy,
goals, and planning for the future. It’s an exciting time for us all as we look
at projects and activities that support our vision, mission, and overall goals.
I encourage you to share in our enthusiasm regarding the present and future
operations of Chartwell. Planning also encourages us to think about how we
develop our programming and events for the upcoming year. We encourage
you to take advantage of the opportunities at your Club. If you have not
recently visited the Club, please make it a goal to enjoy a lunch or dinner, a
Club event, golf or a tennis match.
This Fall we are working on upgrading the services of the Club and
communications that are so vital to a healthy and vibrant Club culture.
We have focused our training efforts in all areas of the Club and with the
support of a dedicated staff and loyal membership, we will continue to thrive
and create exceptional experiences for all our members, families and guests.
As we look toward the holidays we hope you will contact us for all of your
Holiday events, both personally and professionally. Chef Todd has many
great ideas that will make your events successful and memorable.
Energy is in the air! Planning gives us a structure so that we can channel that
energy into enjoyment and excitement; my wish for you is that you enjoy the
last days of summer as we gear up for an amazing Fall and Winter.

JOHN SODERLUND
I am honored to be nominated to run for the Chartwell Golf & Country Club Board of Directors. If elected, I look forward to serving the Chartwell membership and helping move Chartwell forward.
My family and I have been Chartwell members for almost 19 years. I am active in the golf program and previously participated in several men’s tennis groups. My wife, Elaine, is a 9 Hole golfer and tennis player. My boys, C.J. and Jamie, both grew up involved in the junior golf program and are now avid golfers. Some of you may know them from their working in the bag room. Chartwell has been, and continues to be, an important part of our family life.
By way of background, I earned my Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Industrial Administration from Carnegie Mellon University. After beginning my business career in banking and working two years for The May Department Stores Company, I moved to Washington, D.C. to join Furash & Company, a strategy consulting firm specializing in financial services. I joined First Annapolis Consulting in 1993 and we moved to Severna Park and joined Chartwell. I have spent the last 15 years of my career in entrepreneurial ventures, co-founding Partners First (a credit card company), ATM National (the Allpoint ATM network), and Bay Bridge Decision Technologies, which I recently sold. Finally, I just completed nine years of service on the Severn School Board of Trustees, and served as Chairman of its Finance Committee for the last six years.
I have spent the past several years as a member of Chartwell’s Finance Committee and would be pleased to continue serving Chartwell Golf & Country Club. If elected, I will work hard to serve the full breadth of member needs and activities while building on Chartwell’s Tradition of Excellence.

I am so honored to be nominated to be a candidate for the Board of Directors of Chartwell. This is such an exciting time at Chartwell with so many new changes. I am thrilled to have such an
opportunity to contribute to the tremendous legacy of this club. In the past year we’ve introduced a new chef, a new golf pro and staff and a new General Manager. This is such an important time in the history of the club to continue to elevate the experience and I am humbled to be considered for such an instrumental role in shaping our club’s future. My wife, Ann, and I are both originally from Massachusetts, although we’ve lived in Maryland since 1992, we’ve nearly achieved “local” status. Our two daughters, Mackenzie (13) and Allison (10) were born and raised here and have grown up enjoying the club for the past 7 years, participating on the swim team, learning tennis and golf and making friendships that will surely last a lifetime. Both Ann and I enjoy all of the social aspects of the club and have made so many wonderful friends along the way. Both Ann and I are graduates of Skidmore College (‘92). With an entrepreneurial spirit in my blood, we established our own Advertising Agency in 1995 working with local and regional-sized businesses. In 2002 we merged our agency with friend, colleague and fellow Chartwell member, Bruce Borcz, establishing BORCZ+DIXON Integrated Advertising. My professional experience has provided me with the opportunity to understand a wide variety of industries, each with something new to learn and grow from.I have had the privilege to serve on past committees at Chartwell including the Strategic Planning Committee and the Communications Committee. These experiences gave me a more in depth understanding of the commitment of our membership and staff. I look forward to extending my contribution to this wonderful community. My vision for Chartwell is to continue the heritage of a family-first community while leveraging the opportunity our recent changes have provided to advance the culture of the professional services that shape and enhance our experience as members.

My husband, Lee, and I have been members of Chartwell since 1995. I am a 1985 graduate of East Carolina University and I have a degree in Business and Marketing. After graduation, I accepted
a position with The General Foods Corporation and was a Chain Account Executive. In 1988 I became an independent consultant for Cornell University, in Ithca New York. My primary responsibility at Cornell was opening a new and innovative on campus dining facility, Trillium. I moved back to Maryland in 1991 and began my real estate career with Talles Homes as a project manager. In 2005 I became a Real Estate Broker and founded my own company, Talbot Reality.
At Chartwell, I have been on the House, Strategic and Golf Committees. I have also served as the President of the Ladies Nine Hole League for the past three season.
I look forward to the opportunity of serving on the Board of Directors at Chartwell and to offer fresh, innovative ideas to augment the fine work currently being done by The Board.

Aerification is Coming Next WeekAugust 10, 2012
Before I begin this chatter article, I would like to quickly spotlight the “Greens Department Blog” now featured on our website, or visit www.ChartwellGreenDept.com. This site will have updated information on maintenance things that are happening around the golf course and clubhouse. These have included aerification dates and information, new projects, weeds, insects, and new items of interest. Please check it regularly to get the latest updates.
Annuals- Summer annuals are winding down and plans should be made for the fall planting. The most common annuals for the fall are pansies, cabbage/kale, mums, asters, and back-eyed susans (many nurseries are now growing these as annuals). These choices provide a variety of colors, bloom times & lengths. Most pansies have the advantage that they will over winter and be ready to go with the first signs of spring.
Beds- First, continue to weed the beds as needed. Next, as the annuals finish and are no longer providing ornamental value, remove them from the bed. The same applies to perennials, however, with perennials, you will only be removing the foliage and flower; leave the roots. This is important because dead plant material that remains in the bed provides a great place for disease and insects to over winter, leading to problems next season. Third, this is also the time to plan and order spring bulbs (crocus, daffodils, tulips, etc.) for planting in October. Don’t think it is too early to order bulbs because most companies won’t ship them until it is the right planting time for your area. Like the fall annuals, these bulbs come in a wide range of colors and bloom times and, if planned correctly, can provide color from February/March through till May. Finally, now would be a great opportunity to install any woody plants or perennials. Fall is the best time because there is usually sufficient moisture
and the ground temperatures are much warmer than in the spring and, as a result, the plant will establish more quickly.
Trees- Fertilizing your trees this time of year is ideal. However, over fertilizing or using high nitrogen fertilizer will affect the fall color. Too much fertilizer or a high nitrogen fertilizer will cause the tree to continue to produce chlorophyll which will mask or mute the fall colors. Remember the pigments that produce the fall color are in the leaves all year, but it is the reduced chlorophyll production that allows those colors to be seen. The fertilizer will provide nutrients to the trees that will be used for good root growth and increase the trees survivability through the winter. The fertilizer will also help increase the food
reserves for the tree so the tree will be ready for a quick start in the spring.
Turf- The turf should have been aerified in August so, if you did not follow that up with seeding last month, you can still seed during the beginning of this month. If your plans are to completely renovate the lawn, this is the time
to do that, either with sod or seed. The seed must make good contact with the soil which is why you should loosen the soil, either by aerating or slicing the soil. The same for sod- the roots must make good contact with the soil in order for it to establish. Also, make sure you keep the sod and seed moist until seed germination or until the sod’s roots grow. For established turf areas, fall is the time for your final fertilizer application. You should now fertilize with 1-1 ½ lbs. N in slow release form. This will provide the turf with the necessary nutrients for the fall and also get it ready for the spring.
