The Avenida Paulista's canyon of upthrusting sky-scrapers only hints at the city's sources of energy. A more cosmopolitan city, São Paulo possesses significant ethnic com-munities, including substantial Japanese, Italian, and Arab and Lebanese Christian

neighbourhoods.
