HistoryAccording to legend, the history of Venice began when inhabitants of Italyʼs

northern cities came to the region to flee from Germanic invaders in the 5th century. The island people first settled on is known as “Torchello”. Their arrival marked the beginning of a new land; the Republic of Venice.

In the early 9th century, because the Frankish Kingdom sent their army to invade Venice, the people who lived in Torchello at the time moved to mainland Venice. The mainland district of “Realto” is where they arrived. After that, the number of people who lived in Venice grew and trade with Islamic countries expanded as a result of a commercial treaty which was entered into in the latter part of the 10th century. In 1204, the 4th Crusade fleet which included a number of Venetian people attacked Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire and Venice became the most powerful nation in the eastern Mediterranean.

Venice

The wealthy nobles attempted to gain control of political sovereignty, and this led to a period of political instability towards the end of 13th century. Meanwhile, commercial competition between Venice and Genoa continued into the 13th and 14th century. Genoa finally conceded the superiority of Venice, which then became one of the leading city-states and naval powers in the late 15th century.

With the Age of Discovery, from the 15th to 17th century the American continent was discovered and the focus of trading shifted to Asia. The main trading regions became the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans rather than the Adriatic Sea. Gradually, the influence of trading on Venice declined as the cityʼs golden age ended. Instead, Venice turned to crafts such as glass and lace-making.

In 1797, the Republic of Venice was invaded by Napoleon Bonaparte and he incorporated it into Austria. This effectively caused the collapse of Venice as a nation. Because Austria was focused much more on Trieste than Venice, the Venetian economy declined through this era. In 1815, Venice and Lombardy became a new country, the Kingdom of Lombardy- Venetia. However, in the year Spring of Nations, in 1848, the Venetian people revolted against Austria and founded the Republic of Veneto.

The following year, they came under Austriaʼs attack and surrendered to Austrian rule once again. After the Austro-Prussian War began in 1866, Venice was finally integrated into Italy. The remarkable thing about Venice is, even though this city has had a history of unrest alongside its dramatic prosperity, the atmosphere in the city is now filled with a feeling of freedom.

During its famous festival in February, theaters and operas are staged. For the last century, Venice has become a beloved city of art and through its inheritance a unique culture has been created. Today, Venice is loved by people all over the world and reigns as one of the most popular tourist destinations.

Point of Interest

Piazza San Marco (San Marco Square)Piazza San Marco is the most principal public square in Venice. During the era

of Republic of Venice, it located as the entrance for trading between eastern countries. At the same time, it flourished as the center of Politics. There are famous historical buildings such as Basilica di San Marco, Palazzo Ducale and Campanile in this area. One day when you walk through this square, you might hear beautiful live classic music. Because it is the most touristic place in Venice, it is worth visiting and taking pictures!!

Campo Santa MargheritaFor the public space, Campo Santa Margherita is vital and crowded with local

people. People can get what they need with fairly reasonable price in here. This “campo” is surrounded by cafes, bars, pizza stand, ice cream shop and a public market. The nearby CaʼFoscari University also helps add vitality to this plaza. Every Wednesday night, many students are coming to this place and have a drink with friends. When you feel like going to local area rather than sightseeing spot in Venice, here is a wonderful place to have fun.

Ponte di Rialto (Rialto Bridge)Ponte di Rialto is one of the 4 bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice. It

was built in just 3 years, between 1588 and 1591. Because this bridge was the only way to cross the Grand Canal on foot until the next bridge was built in 1854, it was essential to all the Venetians for decades. From the top of this bridge, you can view the spectacular and fantastic scenery of beautiful canal all around the year. Near this bridge, there is well known fish market and you will witness a part of the life of Venetian people.

HistoryThe territory of Treviso was first settled in the Bronze Age. The fertile soil and

the abundance of water in the province of Treviso attracted many peoples to the region – such as Gauls and Romans. In 49 BC, Treviso, formerly known as Tarvisium, finally received the town charter and flourished under Roman rule and law for the first time. In 396 AD, the city was elevated to the status of bishopric. Under the Goths, Lombards and Carolingians, Treviso continued to flourish and became the capital of the whole region. After being destroyed by the Hungarians in 911 the city returned to strength again in 1164 and attained the status of a free commune. Nevertheless, Treviso joined the Veronese League and the Lombard league against the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa – thus it was that Trevisoʼs heyday began and the territory of the city was extended during this period.

Treviso

Page 12: Aiesec Venezia Reception Booklet

Despite continuing prosperity, Treviso was unable to assert its power against the aggressive neighbouring cities. From 1237 on the city came under the rule of different Venetian neighbours. The Ezzelini from Vicenza, the Scaliger family from Verona and several other leaders shaped the destiny of the city. In 1339 Treviso was conquered by the Dogeʼs republic of Venice as the first city in the Veneto region.

Under the rule of Venice, Treviso experienced a renewed period of relative stability and prosperity. In 1797 the Austrians assumed power in the province of Treviso and ruled Treviso with short French interruptions until 1866, when it became part of Italy. Treviso suffered at the hands of the Second World War as it became the target of heavy bombing and was almost completely destroyed. Thanks to excellent reconstruction and restoration works you canʼt see the damage anymore today.

Few people are ever really ready to leave Venice, but when the time comes, take a train to Treviso..you wonʼt be disappointed!

Point of Interest / Treviso

Few people are ever really ready to leave Venice, but when the time comes, take a train to Treviso..you wonʼt be disappointed!

The town also features canals and has a wonderful "island" fish market to visit.

Itʼis well known for its red lettuce called Radicchio di Treviso and clothing company Benetton.

Art lovers will discover a city rich of history and monuments; food and drinks addicted will find out a lot of nice and cosy places where to enjoy the cooking tradition. Treviso can be considered an art city by definition, for the noble roman origins and the lively cultural enviroment. Places that deserve to be seen are concentrated inside the circle of its ancient medieval walls that once used to protect people and now use to be the best place for sport, for meeting people, for relaxed afternoon or for a night drink under the moonlight.

The center of the city is Piazza dei Signori with the medieval palace (Palazzo dei Trecento) and its frescoes, it is just an opening towards a cosier atmosphere. Behind the square, beside the historical Palace Monte di Pietà, a tangle of small streets and canals develops through the most romantic part of the town, rich of wonderful views like the Brunelli Portico.

Page 15: Aiesec Venezia Reception Booklet

The holy architecture of Treviso are the main treasures of the city: above everything the round of frescoes in the church of Santa Caterina of San Nicolò. Great artists left several works of art in other churches, like at the Cathedral, while a cosier spirituality can be experienced in the churches of San Francesco and San Vito.

Nothing so extraordinary here to merit a guidebook of its own, and yet the friendly charm of this town has inspired many a visitor to say, “I could live in Treviso”.

ShoppingBetween Piazza dei Signori and Piazza del Duomo runs the roman way (so

called “cardo romano”) currently named Calmaggiore, brightened by elegant shops and glittering window-shops; in other smaller corner like Piazza Pola, Piazza Vito and Piazza Rinaldi, reminding of the venetian little squares (campielli) reknown boutiques and clubs find their right place.

Recommendation: get ready to be assaulted as soon as you step in, by the shop assistants asking you if you want to help in choosing..just say politely you want to look around first!!

History

Padua claims to be the oldest city in north Italy. The legend says it was founded by the Trojan Antenor, whose relics the commune recognized in a large stone sarcophagus exhumed in the year 1274. The historical Padua inhabited by Veneti thrived thanks to its excellent breed of horses and the wool of its sheep. A Roman municipium since 45 BCE, it became powerful and famous in Roman times.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, it then passed under the Gothic kings Odoacer and Theodoric the Great, but during the Gothic War it made submission to the Greeks in 540. Under the Lombards the city of Padua rose in revolt (601) against Agilulf, the Lombard king, and was stormed and burned by him. The Padua of Antiquity was annihilated: the remains of an amphitheater (the Arena)

and some bridge foundations are all that remain of Roman Padua today.The people fled to the hills and returned to eke out a living among the ruins;

the ruling class abandoned the city for Laguna, according to a chronicle. The city did not easily recover from this blow, and Padua was still weak when the Franks succeeded the Lombards as masters of north Italy.

At the beginning of the 11th century the citizens established a constitution, and during the next century they were engaged in wars with Venice and Vicenza for the right of water-way on the Bacchiglione and the Brenta. The citizens, in order to protect their liberties, were obliged to elect a podestà, and after 1174 their choice fell first on one of the Este family.

In 1236 Frederick II established his tyrannical vicar Ezzelino da Romano in Padua and the neighbouring cities, where he practised frightful cruelties on the inhabitants. When Ezzelino was unseated in June 1256 Padua enjoyed a period of rest and prosperity: the university flourished; the basilica of the saint was begun; the Paduans became masters of Vicenza. But this advance brought them into dangerous proximity to Can Grande della Scala, lord of Verona, to whom they had to yield in 1311.

As a reward for freeing the city from the Scalas, Jacopo da Carrara was elected lord of Padua in 1318. From that date till 1405 nine members of the enlightened Carrara family succeeded one another as lords of the city. It was a long period of restlessness, for the Carraresi were constantly at war; they were finally extinguished between the growing power of the Visconti and of Venice.

Padua prospered economically, and culturally, and in 1405 passed under Venetian rule, and so remained till the fall of the republic in 1797. The city was governed by two Venetian nobles, a “podestà” for civil and a captain for military affairs.

After the fall of the Venetian republic the history of Padua follows the history of Venice under the French and Austrians. In 1866 Padua and the rest of the Veneto became part of the united Kingdom of Italy.

Point of Interest / PadovaThe main points of interests (and also the points where a lot of young people

meet) are for sure the three famous squares: Piazza della Frutta, Piazza delle Erbe, and Piazza dei Signori.

All around these wonderful squares you can see an incredible quantity of cafés, bars, little shops, “canteen” that sell wine, and on the famous “university Wednesday” all the university students meet here in the night just to hang out together and drink something.

The most representative place of the city is Prato della Valle: a huge square which is said to be the second largest square of Europe after Red Square in Moscow. It was built during the Roman Empire and from the 18th century it is surrounded by the 78 statues of the most famous men of the city. It is a lovely place to relax, meet people and where all the big events of the city take place.

The university of Padova is the second oldest of Italy (founded in 1222) and people from all Europe come to study here!

Museums

The Scrovegni Chapel: a masterpiece in the history of painting in Italy and Europe in the 14th century, is considered to be the most complete series of frescoes executed by Giotto in his mature age.For further information: http://www.cappelladegliscrovegni.it/eng/index_e.htm

The Botanic Garden: The botanical garden of Padova, founded in 1545 after deliberation of the Senate of the Venetian Republic, is the worldʼs oldest academic garden that has been preserving throughout the centuries its original location. Climate

Climate and weather in Venice are quite various during the four seasons. An almost constant feature of the climate of Venice is the humidity, due to the fact that the historical center was built on water. The sea closeness offers a tempered climate, never too much cold. Tides constantly return the lagoon water: every six hours tides make it to go out (towards the Adriatic sea) and to come in through the three lagoon entrances. Without the tides the fragile ecosystem of the Lagoon of Venice would die in little time. The fast climate mutations often make difficult some precise forecasts of the weather, which can also change whithin few hour.

For real time info check IlMeteo Website : http://www.ilmeteo.it

Spring - April, May and June. This is probably the best season for sightseeing. During this period the days

are long, the temperatures are moderate, the weather and the climate are agreeable. Groups of tourists and visiting students crowd the downtown. Usually there isn't much rain.

Summer - July, August and September.Summer has a hot and humid weather with max temperatures about 35°C

(95°F). Downtown is visited during cloudy days above all by tourists coming from the adriatic shores. There are some storms that make for cooler the temperature for a few days.

Autumn - October, November and December. Fall has a nice climate for sightseeing the City. The weather is pleasant even if

daylight is shorter. The colours and the afterglows that are seen in Venice in autumn are wonderful.

Winter - January, February and March.Winter is not a terribly cold season as rarely the temperature falls under 0°C

(32°F). Snowfall is rare as well. It's so easy to sightsee in Venice in the winter because of the lack of tourists (except during Carnival, in February).

Tides

During late Fall sometimes the City gets the "high water" weather, determined by 3 conditions: full moon, "scirocco" wind blowing from south east, and rain.

The period in which some high tides are registered (high water) is in October, November and December. Tides are higher in the morning (see diagram).

The highest among the tides registered in Venice was that of the terrible November 4, 1966: in that day happened a maximum peak of a meter and ninety-six centimeters over sea level. In those hours the city risked to be destroyed by water.

Are under construction (in the three lagoon entrances) the mobile MOSE dams, (MOdulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico), which should, in the forecasts of the planners, protect Venice in case of tides higher than the meter and ten.

When tides reach the ninety centimetres on sea level St. Mark's Square is already partially flooded.

The road network is ensured (up to the 120 cm. s.l.) positioning in the lowest zones of Venice many banked wood footbridges that allow the transit to the people.

When a higher than usual tide is expected in the city, sirens are sounded 3-4 hours in advance to warn the public, but they only start if the level is expected to be above 110 cm. (12% of the surface under water).

ArrivalFlight and Arrival Information

Flying is the easiest, fastest, and cheapest way to reach Venice from outside Italy. If you plan to take a flight, make sure you arrive at either "Marco Polo" Venice Airport or "Antonio Canova" Treviso Airport.

Most European line and flag companies (i.e. British Airways, Air France, EasyJet, Alitalia, Lufthansa etc.) have regular flights to "Marco Polo" Venice Airport, while low cost flight companies (i.e. Ryanair, Wizzair, Jet2 etc.) usually have flights to "Antonio Canova" Treviso Airport.

In any case, no matter which airport you'll be landing at, we'll try to make sure an @er will be there to warmly welcome you and pick you up.

If, for various reasons, this won't happen, we'll try to let you know in advance and we strongly advise you to call the PM of your project and ask where and how to reach him/her or other @ers, upon arrival.

Please avoid flights landing late at night, because it would be really difficult for us to come pick you up.

As soon as you make your flight arrangements, make sure you send an email containing full arrival details to the PM of your project, including arrival date and time, airline, and flight number and ask him/her to confirm that someone

Page 31: Aiesec Venezia Reception Booklet

will be at the airport to meet you.Once you land, make sure you take your entire luggage with you and look for

the @ers as you exit the arrivals area. You can get some € at the airport ATMs or foreign exchange bureau if you haven't done so yet, but it's not mandatory since you can easily find foreign exchange bureaus all over Venice.

Accommodation and Meals

Most trainees will be accommodated in Host Families or LC House, which are already equipped with the basic stuff (kitchen, bathroom & shower, bedrooms, living room) and everything needed to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Host Families usually provide you with the stuff for the bed (sheets, pillow, blanket) and also with towels. If youʼre in LC House, youʼll need to bring these things with you. See also the section What to Pack.

LC House will be equipped with a washing machine for the laundry. Otherwise, you can find 24h Laundry service around the city. If youʼre in a Host Family, ask your host if you can do your laundry once a week.

As for the meals, youʼll definitely have plenty alternatives to choose from, in every moment of the day:

Breakfast: you can either enjoy a typical brioche (croissant) and cappuccino at the bar right next to where you stay, or you can go shopping at the nearest supermarket and get some cereals, fruit juice, bread, jam, Nutella and other stuff for your breakfast. In local bars serving breakfast, a brioche and a cappuccino will cost you less than €3.

Lunch: youʼll probably be around the city at that time and you may want to enjoy some local food. Takeaway pizzas and restaurants offering a wide range of dishes are around every corner. Plus, some pubs are also open at that time of the day, offering various types of sandwiches and first courses. Youʼll usually spend for lunch between €5 and €10.

Dinner: if youʼre at home, why not enjoy cooking and dining with the others? Otherwise, you can always order a pizza: takeaway shops are usually open until midnight for delivery. If you fancy going around town, most pubs and restaurants are open until 2 pm and thereʼs a lot of stuff to choose from: starting from

tarting from traditional restaurants serving fish and local dishes and wines, to pizza houses, pubs and typical Venetian bacaro, which offer small portions of food (French fries, seafood, grilled vegetables, etc) and a wide variety of drinks. Having dinner out can cost you between €10 and €25.

Most superstores and hypermarkets are open Mon-Sat 9 am – 8 pm, but smaller local shops usually have a two-hour lunch break and close at 7pm; most small shops are closed on Monday morning and on Wednesday afternoon.

Trainees and @ers often go out in the evenings or host parties in LC House: we usually start with a spritz in campo and then get some pizza or get together and cook in the house, then spend the rest of the night around the city.

Mobile Telephone Networks

The most important mobile phone networks in Italy are: Vodafone, Tim, Wind, and 3. All of them have a very good coverage throughout the country and we recommend you get an Italian Sim as soon as you arrive: it will be much easier to stay in touch with the other @ers.

Please consider which network is prevailing in your team, so you can get a Sim from the same network and thus pay very little or nothing for phone calls with the other members. A Sim with a new number will cost you about €10.

If you need also Internet connection, mobile networks offer Wi-Fi Internet solutions, sometimes for less than €9/month. If in doubt, ask the @ers at the arrival.

Currency, Money, and ATMs

The official currency in Italy is Euro (€). ATMs (Cash machines, or Bancomat in Italian), are widely available 24/7, especially in the center of the cities and even in the smaller towns, while most Foreign Exchange Bureaus are located around Venice or in train stations and airports.

We recommend you bring some cash with you, to cover the initial expenses (€200, more or less, also as reserve funds in case of emergency) or to have it ready to exchange upon arrival.

ATMs of any bank usually accept both MasterCard and Visa cards. Your bank may apply a fee to the cash that you withdraw abroad. Make sure you know if such fee applies in Italy and how much is it, in order to avoid unpleasant surprises on your monthly bill.

If you need to send or receive money, most Post offices (Poste Italiane) and some banks offer international money transfer services through Western Union or MoneyGram.

Getting around Venice

You can move around Venice either by using the water bus (vaporetto, in Italian), or by foot.

Water buses cover only the main canals and are useful when you have to go from one side of the town to the other, or when you have luggage.

Walking can be a bit surprising at first, but make sure you have a map and things get somewhat easier. Getting lost is part of the journey, and sometimes it can lead you to discover beautiful angles of the city, so donʼt get scared if youʼve lost your way: stop and ask for directions.

Getting around the Veneto region: Moving from Venice to any other city in the region (and back) is quite easy and fast. You can easily reach all cities by train, and move in the city center by bus or by foot.

Getting to Padova or Treviso will take you less than half an hour and the one way fare is about €3. Getting to Verona or Vicenza will take a bit longer (about 2 hours) and the one way fare is about €10.

Local buses in nearly all cities have standard one way fares that are around €1,5 and can be used for 60 to 75 minutes (depending on the city).

Cabs are located in front of stations, city centers and big hotels. They are white colored and they are mostly used by tourists, because most locals find it more convenient to use their own car and also cabs are quite expensive compared to other transportation solutions.

When you arrive, ask your host if itʼs convenient for you to make a monthly ticket for the bus or the train, in order to make your travels easier and save a bit on transportation costs.

CultureCulture Essentials

As a result of cultural differences, you will probably experience culture shock. Culture shock may take many forms, but most people find the following explanations very helpful.

The Stages of Culture Shock

1. HONEYMOON STAGE: During the first stage, foreigners feel excited. The new country is interesting, the people are friendly and helpful, and the future looks promising.

2. CONFLICT STAGE: Problems! Work, language, shopping—everything is difficult. What was so simple back home requires more effort in the new country. Friends are hard to make and at this point, foreigners begin to believe that the local people are unfriendly. Homesickness begins, and along with it all the complaints about the new country.

3. CRITICAL STAGE: This stage is also called the HUMOR STAGE. Foreigners begin to pick up more of the language, so communication with locals becomes easier. Small things become less difficult. Instead of being so frustrating, things become humorous, and foreigners are able to laugh at their

Page 35: Aiesec Venezia Reception Booklet

mistakes. Customs and traditions become clearer, and slowly the situation passes from impossible to hopeful.

4. RECOVERY STAGE: Foreigners are now happy in their new country. They are no longer dissatisfied and unhappy. Life has settled down, and they are now able to laugh at themselves and at situations in which they find themselves. They accept the good and bad of the new culture, and feel a sense of balance and belonging.

You can accelerate your cultural adjustment by doing the following:

You can accelerate your cultural adjustment by doing the following:Recognize that you are going through a period of stress that includes

both positive and negative emotions.Recognize that you are not alone.Find people in Italy who can answer your questions and be persistent

about contacting them.Use your eyes and ears.Keep a diary of your experiences.Know your weak points when you are under stress.Remember that nothing is forever.Keep your expectations reasonable.Realize that everyone who goes abroad experiences culture shock.Be an avid learner about Italy. Find out all the information you can.Keep busy and active.Make a list of all the positive things you can see, and put the list where

you see it every day.Avoid foreigners who spend their time complaining about Ugandan

culture. Avoid criticizing Ugandan culture yourself.Work at maintaining a healthy sense of humor. Be ready to laugh at

yourself.Find someone who has been there longer. Use this person to get

perspective on the culture.Make friends with people from Uganda and have deeper, more intimate

relationships with them. Talk with them about the problems that you are having.

When talking about your experiences, focus on your feelings rather than on what you consider the causes of your problem.

Try to trace every “strange action” to its underlying values. Some things to remember about cross-cultural relationships:

1.What seems to be logical, sensible, important, and reasonable to a person in one culture may seem stupid, irrational, and unimportant to an outsider.2.Feelings of apprehension, loneliness, and lack of confidence are

common when visiting another culture.3.One should make up oneʼs own mind about another culture and not rely

on the reports and experiences of others.4.It requires experiences, as well as study, to understand the many

subtleties of another culture. 5.People can have strong feelings for their native language, but this is

often not clear until they encounter another language. 6.People often feel that their own language is far superior to other

languages.

Pratical InformationSafety

Venice, Padua and Treviso are very safe, based on any international standard.

CrimeThe streets in Veneto are safe to walk around, even late at night. Male

trainees can easily walk home alone late at night, while itʼs better for female trainees to walk with a friend if itʼs very late. Violent crime is extremely uncommon here – in this regard, Venice / Treviso and Padova are ones of the safest cities in Italy. There are instances non-violent "crimes of opportunity" like pick-pocketing, but these things happen in every big city. The worst that can happen is that you lose your telephone, camera, or purse if you are careless.

You can minimize your risk of pick-pocketing by keeping your valuable items in a safe pocket. A money belt or a travel walletmay be useful to keep your cash, ATM cards, identification, and important documents. Always make sure to keep your passport in a safe place. A few higher-risk places include taxis and busy taxi stages, especially at nighttime. Also, make sure to always lock the door and windows to your room. Pay Attention when you return home late night in proximity at the central train station of Padova, Treviso and Venezia.

Page 41: Aiesec Venezia Reception Booklet

Finally, you will be part of the AIESEC community, which includes a big network of local university students in Venice. You will be able to make friends here who will always be at your side as you are getting to know the city. Your AIESEC friends will let you know if there are any risks involved and give you tips on staying safe.
