The Polish climate is generally moderate Summer is usually warm sometimes quite hot with temperatures above 25degC Autumn may be cold and rainy and winter snowy (especially in the South of Poland) with low temperatures even down to about - 15degC or - 20 degC Spring comes in April or May

Warm September marks the beginning of Polands autumn which last till the beginning of November The autumn is called golden because of the abundance of colors mostly yellow light brown and red from the leaves of trees Most of the time it is still quite warm (around 15degC) This is the best time to visit our beautiful old cities like Krakow Warsaw Wroclaw Poznan and the tri-city of Gdansk Gdynia and Sopot If you prefer to relax close to nature then there are many wonderful sites like the mountains in Southern Poland where you could walk and admire the scenery

As winter starts the temperature can drop below zero and snow begins to fall Between mid-December and February the average temperature is -10degC Sometimes however it can drop even below minus 25degC The snow often lies till mid-March when the astronomic spring begins Therefore if you are fond of skiing both winter and summer semester are ideal In the south of Poland you can find many places for skiing like Zakopane the so-called winter capital of Poland Bukowina Tatrzańska Białka Tatrzańska Szklarska Poręba Wisła (home town of Adam Małysz) and Szczawnica

Spring is the happiest and most colorful time of the year The whole of nature awakes from the numb of winter Toruń is overtaken by greenness and flowers start blooming The streets fill up with colorful fashion If you like fresh seaside breeze then takes a train to Gdansk and relish the spring sea air Would you prefer a mountain view Then go south and walk in the mountains Tatry Pieniny Sudety Karpaty or Bieszczady

The summer starts in June with temperatures around 25 degC and July is the hottest month It is the best time to visit Poland and sunbathe on the beautiful sandy beaches along the Baltic Sea Moreover you can go mountain climbing in the south of Poland

As you can see Poland is one of the most beautiful European countries where you can have fantastic time Poland is an all year round experience and offers something for everyone

Polish economy

Poland is considered to have one of the healthiest economies of the post-communist countries and is currently the fastest growing country within the EU Since the fall of the communist government Poland has steadfastly pursued a policy of liberalising the economy and today stands out as a successful example of the transition from a centrally planned economy to a primarily capitalistic market economy In 2009 Poland has

created the most GDP growth in the EU As of November 2009 the Polish economy had not entered recession nor even contracted Although the Polish economy is currently undergoing economic development there are many challenges ahead The most notable task on the horizon is the preparation of the economy (through continuing deep structural reforms) to allow Poland to meet the strict economic criteria for entry into the European Single Currency (Euro) According to the minister of finance Jacek Rostowski Poland is likely to join the ERM in 2009 and adopt the euro in 2012 or 2013 Some businesses may already accept the euro as payment

Average salaries in the enterprise sector in April 2008 were 3137 PLN (925 euro or 1434 US dollars) and growing sharply Salaries vary between the regions the median one in the capital city Warsaw was 4600 PLN (1200 euro or 2000 US dollars) while in Białystok it was only 2400 PLN (670 euro or 1000 US dollars) Since joining the European Union many workers have left to work in other EU countries (particularly Ireland and the UK) because of high unemployment which was the second-highest in the EU (142 in May 2006) However with the rapid growth of the salaries booming economy strong value of Polish currency and quickly decreasing unemployment (67 in August 2008) exodus of Polish workers seems to be over In 2008 people who came back outnumbered those leaving the country As of first half of 2009 Polish economy seems to be one of the least hit by the current global recession In the first quarter of 2009 Polish GDP rose by 08 which was one of the best results in the European Union

Administrative divisions

Polands current voivodeships (provinces) are largely based on the countrys historic regions whereas those of the past two decades (to 1998) had been centred on and named for individual cities Administrative authority at voivodeship level is shared between a government-appointed voivode (governor) an elected regional assembly (sejmik) and an executive elected by that assembly The voivodeships are subdivided into powiaty (often referred to in English as counties) and these are further divided into gminy (also known as communes or municipalities) Major cities normally

have the status of both gmina and powiat Poland currently has 16 voivodeships 379 powiats (including 65 cities with powiat status) and 2478 gmin

Szczecin

Szczecin is

a city situated in the north-west of Poland where the river

Odra meets the Baltic Sea (through Szczecin Bay) For centuries this location has been the junction for major European transit routes from the west to the east and from the north through the Baltic to the south of Europe Szczecin is also the capital of Western Pomerania and the largest Polish city located in the vicinity of three European countries Germany Denmark and Sweden

Szczecin is a city with over a thousand years of tradition and turbulent history and is also the historical capital of Western Pomerania Its most illustrious period was the time of the reign of the dukes of the Griffin dynasty when the city belonged to the Hanseatic League At this time the city was one of the most powerful ports and trade centres on the Baltic In the XVII century after the termination of the line of descent of the Pomeranian dukes the strategic location of Szczecin became

the cause of numerous armed interventions from adjoining nations - Denmark Sweden Brandenburg and Germany At the end of the XIX century the city experienced a period of particularly dynamic economic development as capital flowed in from all over Europe The port maritime economy and cargo transport developed extremely rapidly After the end of the Second World War the reconstruction of the destroyed city was taken care of by settlers from all over Poland who arrived in Szczecin and in the area of Western Pomerania in large numbers Although the former image of the city changed its unique character was

preserved with the captivating charm of historical secessionist architecture and the beauty of its lustrous vegetation

The city was modelled on Paris with a number of star-shaped squares and is known as the city of greenery Obviously there is a reason to it There are very few towns in Poland with comparable greenery water areas and climate favourable for both living and tourism The urban built-up areas contain green enclaves as well as parks featuring rare tree and bush species and one of the largest cemeteries - the Central Cemetery (area of approx 170 ha) The squares in Szczecin are planted with many varieties of magnolia that bloom in spring The city is located on the edge of three forests It takes Szczecin residents slightly over an hour by car train or ferry to get to famous seaside resorts - Swinoujscie (with ferry service to Denmark and Sweden) Miedzyzdroje or Rewal The city of Szczecin and Western Pomeranian Province are one of the most attractive tourist regions in Poland
