S.A.M. – Tell us about your childhood. C.M. – I was born in Detroit Michigan. My mother and father separated when I was still an infant. My mother remarried when I was ten and we moved to Oklahoma. My mother was and still is a devout Christian. She is a woman of virtue and pride. My mother was very poised. She was a very beautiful woman also. She was the kind of mother that people constantly complimented you on whenever she came to the school. She ran a tight ship! She implemented the power of prayer in our daily life and ultimately that is what saved me. At thirteen I did go to live with my natural father for a brief time and he was a perfectionist when it came to my school work. So needless to say I was a straight-A student throughout school. S.A.M. – Why did you choose the title, “In Rare Form”? C.M. – The title has a twofold meaning. When I started writing this story I was inside of a healing process with a group of women in pain. As I started to put my pain on paper I shared it with others. And then they started to share their story with me. No two stories were the same. Each was unique, odd and Rare in its own form. The second reason why I named my book this is simple: I wanted to tell my story in rare form. Not raw but rare. You see it is rare that you read a true story and the author gives you a unbiased look at herself. I didn’t want to paint things all cute and profound. I wanted this to really be naked and “In Rare Form”. S.A.M. – How much of your real life is in the book? C.M. – This book is about my life. It is not a question of how much of my life is in this book. But rather how much of my life is not. There are many pages of my life that are missing. I left out thousands of mornings that I woke up vomiting in the stool. I left out many, many nights I spent considering suicide. I left out so many nights I cried for my children and they cried for me. I left out several cold nights on a jail cell floor that I spent kicking heroin only to return to it again. The pain my children suffered at the hands of their assailant is described in detail in this book also. My readers will follow me through a lifetime of pain and also a point of victory. When you finish reading “In Rare Form” you will definitely believe in miracles all over again. S.A.M. – What would you say to someone struggling with addiction right now? C.M. – The first thing I would tell them is to go somewhere alone and ask yourself if you are truly ready to get out. This may sound fabricated but it is important. However being ready does not make it happen. I would tell them to face the facts. You have no power on your own. Pray!!! And get ready. Not for a gift from God, but rather a struggle that will bring the gift. But you got to be fighting, praying, looking and begging for relief. And I would tell them to get in touch with me. I do not just talk about helping people. I am about helping people. It is so important that you surround yourself with positive people. But as a recovering addict I know from experience that this often seems impossible. I understand that. I was in addiction for a couple of decades!! All my friends were either dope fiends or dope dealers. So, I went into the house of God. It was there that I found a group of positive people and many had been through the storm. So I was able to see that I was not the only one. Trust me I know it’s hard. I was missing teeth, underweight and broken. But I was willing. Put all that aside and give yourself a chance. You will find women just like me who are happy to help. But you got to be ready. S.A.M. – How important is brokenness in Christ in order to gain victory? C.M. – I can only speak of the blessings I have seen firsthand in my own life. The more I came to know God and his son the more I was able to appreciate the ransom and sacrifice. Although kicking heroin was very painful it was nothing compared to having nails driven through your hands while hanging on a torture stake!! And the more I prayed the harder I prayed. You see, once I was

Page 11: August 2011 Spirit Alive Magazine

broke down and lying in my cell with no one but God to comfort me. I really started to feel the presence of God in my life. And it was there that my spiritual life took a turn for the better. S.A.M. – There are many out there feeling like you were chosen and God can’t choose them. What would you say to them right now? C.M. – Lila that is often said to me. And when I was inside of the depths of my pain I would see others and often feel that same way. Today I am here to tell you that line of thinkingis far from the truth. God didn’t choose me. I chose God. And when I did he accepted me for who I am and gave me the power I needed to get to where I am today. S.A.M. – What is the purpose of writing this story? C.M. – It started out as a healing process for me. When I started writing the pages of “In Rare Form” I was able to take a look at my life. I was telling my story to myself. As I started to look back on my life I no longer felt hopeless and sorry for myself. Instead I became grateful. I realized that I was no longer a victim of my choices but rather a survivor of a very sordid past. Then I started to share my pages with other women who were victims at the time. Soon we became survivors together. And that is when I knew my purpose. My purpose for writing this story is simple: I want to help victims of child molestation and addiction to become survivors. My purpose is to inspire women from all walks of life. I want to inspire the addict to take a step towards recovery. I mean if I could find recovery after twenty three years in addiction. I am sure they can too. I want the child that has suffered at the hands of an abuser to take the power away from their attacker. Read the testimony of my children and turn the tables. (Your mother and others may need you one day). Last but not least, I want the woman who has never had to look addiction or pain in the eye to take a step back. Get on her knees and realize she truly has something to thank God for tonight. S.A.M. – Tells us about your transformation and the road to recovery. C.M. – My road to recovery was bumpy at best. I have to give thanks to God first and foremost. An intricate part of my recovery has to be contributed to the staff and team of the Riverside Substance Abuse and Treatment Program. My attorney was instrumental in getting me accepted into this opportunity of a lifetime. At the time it didn’t feel that way. The program meant I had to stay incarcerated on jail grounds for almost a year. This was a very difficult choice. But I was also facing up to ten years in prison. The program consisted of English majors, and teachers with various degrees. They were not substance abuse specialist and that is what I think made the difference. Their expertise was life skills. And that was just what I needed after a life of crime, pain and addiction. These people were dedicated to making a difference. I am in constant contact with all of them still. After I left the RSAT program I was equipped to fight. The skills I learned in cognitive thinking I still use today! But that is only part of the process. It took courage to walk away from my past life and friends. So I took a leap of faith. I moved out the state. Today I believe that contributed greatly to my success. S.A.M. – What is your mission? C.M. – My mission is to give a little hope to those who need it. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of something to get you through. My goal is to open up a center for children who are victims of child molestation and help them become survivors. I want to reach out to mothers and help them on the road to recovery by any means necessary. My mission is to get this story in front of the right people. I want to reach as many people as humanly possible. I hope that by putting our story out there others will take control of their pain and tell their story too. And look out! The healing will begin. And one by one we will be able not only to heal ourselves but others along the way. That is the real mission.

MISSIONARIES ON THE BATTLEFIELD

Jennifer and HEAL Information (they go hand in hand!): I took my first mission trip to Africa when I was a senior in high school. It was a transformative experience. I graduated in 2005 from Mill River Union High School in N. Clarendon, VT. In the fall of 2005, I began my freshman year at Wagner College in Staten Island, NY. I double-majored in International Affairs and French Studies. I still had Zimbabwe on my mind though. I had fallen in love with Africa. I wanted to learn everything about the continent, and tried to do just that by trying to write every paper on the subject, or taking every class that Africa in the title. My advisor nicknamed me Africa girl! During my sophomore year, I couldn’t put aside my desire to Africa again. God had shown me my path. I knew that I needed to help as many of the African orphans that I could. I just hadn’t discovered how I was going to help or make a difference in such a big issue. Having faith in my call, I made arrangements to go back to Africa, this time to Kenya. I volunteered at another orphanage. Below is my reaction from our website: “The first time traveling in Africa, I visited Zimbabwe on a mission trip to volunteer at an orphanage. I was immediately inspired by the care of the orphans and by the couple who spent their lives nurturing them. I had no idea how my life would be changed by my experience and by the children at this orphanage. Since then, my spirit has been moved with the desire to do more for the children in Africa. Two years after my first trip, I traveled to Kenya. I had the opportunity to volunteer at a state run orphanage. I was shocked by the appalling conditions I witnessed. It broke my heart to see the children suffering. My experience with the children in the home transformed my passion into a dream. My dream was to build an orphanage in Kenya where children would be nurtured and given the opportunity to realize their hopes and dreams for the future. In 2007, just eight months after my transformative experience in Kenya, I founded a non-profit organization called HEAL the Children Foundation, Inc. The organization is committed to the support and empowerment of destitute, delinquent, abandoned, neglected children and adolescents who live throughout the developing world. We believe that every child, no matter what race, ethnicity, or social class, has the right to proper Healthcare, Education, Ample Nutrition, and Love. To ensure that every child has the opportunities of HEAL, we seek to design, implement and support orphanages that will care for children through our philosophy. Every home built will be a positive environment where children can grow surrounded by hope and love. The children of the world matter and we want to show them that we care. “- Jennifer In truth, I had a moment of such unbelievable clarity when I was in Kenya. I truly believe that God spoke to me, giving me my call of building orphanages, and instilling the unbreakable faith and confidence in my ability to do so. I was only 22 when I received this call. I still had two years of college left, but I returned to the United States and moved forward. I researched, I learned, and God introduced me to the right people along the way to make the formation and the positive progression of HEAL possible.

Being only 22 years old with such a great and BIG dream, I knew that I would encounter individuals who wouldn’t take me seriously. I did, but I continued to believe in myself, and my call--- and I knew that as long as I believed in myself, then achieving my dream was entirely possible. During the fall semester of my junior year, I studied abroad in the country of Senegal in western Africa. I spent 3 months immersed in the culture, studying French and the native language, global development and working in a Catholic baby orphanage. It was a fantastic experience that taught me so much about different cultures and some of the issues that affect those cultures. I returned to the states with a different perspective and a newly invigorated spirit that was determined to continue to grow HEAL and to live out my call. I took a semester of to work on the foundation and to fundraise to purchase land for our first orphanage in Kenya. I returned to Wagner College in the fall of 2008. On my first day of the fall semester, HEAL received a notification letter from the IRS saying that we had received our 501 (c)(3) status. Now, as a legitimate nonprofit we could really fundraise! I graduated from college in May of 2009, and returned to New England to further the mission of HEAL and to raise money for us to develop our first orphanage. In 2010, I took two very transformative trips to Kenya. The first was to negotiate the price on a 20-acre plot of land in rural land of Kenya. The second trip was to purchase that land, but God led us down a different path. I spent years focused on finding the perfect land, raising money for that land and then purchasing the land so we could move forward, but during the last week of my first trip to Kenya in 2010, I found myself spending time at an orphanage called the Rehema Girl’s Rescue Center in Nyahururu, Kenya. At the time this home, founded by a young Kenyan couple, supported 30 girls, ranging in age from 6-19. It was a wonderful place that reminded me of the home that I wanted to create. I instantly became connected with the girls and decided that during the upcoming summer months, I would return to Rehema to stay, to learn and to purchase the land that I had found only an hour away. That is what I did. I spend June and most of July of 2010, living at Rehema, spending time with the girls and learning about the complex nature of running an orphanage. I started to have a nagging feeling in my stomach that I was making a mistake. Maybe I shouldn’t be purchasing land and starting from scratch? Maybe I should be working with Rehema, helping the girls that I loved so much. With three weeks left in Kenya and after a lot of praying, and with the approval of my board of 7 directors, I decided that we shouldn’t purchase the other land and instead purchase land near Rehema to build a school and boy’s orphanage. So we spent days looking for new land, and with only a few days left before my flight to Kenya, we purchased 7 acres of land 10 minutes away from Rehema. I left Kenya feeling satisfied and ready to move forward in our new direction. We decided that we would build a school first because education is such an important part of the children’s lives in Kenya. However, it is expensive and often inadequate and we believe that we can open a school
