Chart topper, Christina Perri demonstrates how to wear the feminine, side fringe perfectly; coupled with soft, girly waves this hair trend gives any wearer an instant dash of grown-up glamour. Which fringe style will suit you is a question of trial and error; to maintain this look, remember to fix with a flexible hairspray. Why not experiment with clipping your longer fringe into a stylish quiff or French braid? The options are endless!

‘John Frieda Salon Shine Ionic Hairdryer’ creates smoothness, body and shine with its powerful 2200W dryer, inspired by the John Frieda hair care professionals. Boots £59.99

This progression from the previous staple ‘dip dye’ trend is an updated, more natural way of creating a seamless blend from your root shade to the colour on the ends of your hair. Initially more statement and high impact in finish, this time around the trend is becoming more beautiful and far more delicate. Keep your make up style simple and striking to enhance the rock and roll intensity of this look.

‘James Brown London Colour Enhancing Shampoo’ contains sunflower extract to help prevent colour fade and gives incredible shine. Boots £6.12 250ml

One of the most unique hair trends to have emerged in recent months seems to have turned our society’s obsession with youth on its head... literally! Finding your first grey hair might send the fear of God into some of us, but with a whole movement of grey-haired celebrities and models walking the runway, going grey gracefully is becoming a little easier to swallow. If you’re still apprehensive, why not give the trend a go with a subtle grey streak or start with an icy blonde like Kelly? John Frieda Frizz - Ease Serum Finishing Spray Glossing Mist gives a highly reflective shine and glistening finish to any style, any time. Superdrug £5.59 75ml

Taking the plunge and trimming your flowing locks into this on-trend, pixie style is about the most extreme image change on offer. Perfect for the upcoming summer months, this risky yet elegant look is approved by fashionistas worldwide; be sure to ask your hairstylist for a short, soft, wispy-layered cut with enough length to allow for a face-framing fringe in the front - or take your favorite celeb-inspired pixie picture with you for a reference! 20 Feel Alive Spring 2012

On May 16th 1987, Coventry’s streets were awash with people celebrating their football club’s victorious win over Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup Final at Wembley. The rival team were appearing in their third final in seven seasons, having won the cup in 1981 and 1982. They had won the cup a record eight times in total and had never lost a final. Coventry were appearing in their first ever final after 104 years of trying. The odds were stacked firmly against them!

After a thrilling match in front of 98,000 fans, four normal goals and one own goal, Coventry took the sporting world by storm and won the match 3-2.

It’s been 25 years since that victorious day, and Feel Alive magazine is celebrating in style as we promote two fantastic events that you have to go and see in 2012! ‘From Highfield Road to Wembley Way’ at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, and ‘We Love You City’ at the Belgrade Theatre.

Both of these events celebrate all things Coventry City, and are a must-see for fans, residents and families alike!

The Belgrade Theatre’s top scoring play, We Love You City, returns to Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre from Tuesday 8 to Saturday 26 May, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Coventry City winning the FA Cup and the arrival of the London 2012 Olympic Football Tournament.

A co-production between the Coventry based Talking Birds theatre company, We Love You City sees eleven players take centre stage to recreate the events of that legendary match and tell the funny, edgy, moving, and sometimes farcical stories that were playing out in Coventry during those nail-biting 90 minutes - plus a bit of extra time.

The Belgrade Theatre and Talking Birds worked together to collate people’s stories, memories and reflections of that day to provide a

snapshot of Coventry in 1987 and the chance to relive the atmosphere and emotion surrounding this defining time in the city’s history.

Nick Walker, writer of We Love You City said: “The response first time around to We Love You City was overwhelming. There was singing, chanting and even some old school football rattles - and not just from the football fans! I’m hoping that the sense of optimism in the city, both during Olympic year, and with the anniversary of the match itself, will mean the experience in B2 in May will be even more emotional.”

Tickets for We Love You City are available now from the box office on 024 7655 3055 priced from £15.25 to £28.75 or via www.belgrade.co.uk where cheaper tickets are available.

LET’S ALL SING TOGETHER!

From Highfield Road to Wembley Way celebrates one of the greatest FA Cup finals of all time and looks at how a football team can unite a whole city. Within the FREE exhibition that opens in April there will be five sections that will showcase the entire journey of the club to that momentous day. History of the Sky Blues looks at the founding of the club up until 1960 and then the Jimmy Hill years between 1961 and 1986. The Road to Wembley explains the cup run chronologically from both the perspective of the players and the fans. The Final follows the players as

they prepare for the match and dissects the highs and lows of the game. Bringing the Cup Back allows the Sky Blues supporters to tell their own tales of the day the FA Cup came to Coventry. Coventry’s Cup is where the people’s memories and stories will be displayed.

28 Feel Alive Spring 2012

In recent years, Dara O’Briain has become one of our best loved TV faces. The Irish comedian has gained a huge following hosting a wide range of programmes, including the consistently brilliant topical panel game, Mock The Week, the hit show about wannabe entrepreneurs, The Apprentice - You’re Fired! and the enormously popular astronomy programme, Stargazing Live.

Alongside Griff Rhys Jones and Rory McGrath, Dara has also delighted viewers with several series of their highly entertaining nautical adventures, Three Men in a Boat. It is not hard to see why he is one of the most in-demand TV stars in the business.

DARAO’BRIAIN

Interview by: James Rampton

One of Dara’s greatest strengths as a stand-up is his dazzling, spontaneous exchanges with the audience. The comedian observes that, “I get such a thrill from my audience. They remain a great untapped resource. I love interacting with them. They go in directions I would never have thought of.

One of the things that makes stand-up great and different from any other art form is that it’s so reactive. You break the fourth wall and engage in a really natural conversation with the audience. You don’t want to fall into the corny trap of taking the micky out of people. You are not just looking for a victim, but someone who will add something to the show. The audience can feel the tension when it is off-the-cuff and can sense that it’s unique. It’s great fun!”

But now, Dara is returning to his first love. After his sell-out tour of the UK and Ireland in 2010 and his bestselling DVD, This Is The Show, Dara is once again travelling round the country with a brand-new show. No, we don’t want to miss it, either!

Hitting the road this spring, Dara will be reminding us why he is one of the UK’s finest stand-ups. There are few more magnetic, thought-provoking, quick-witted and down-right funny comedians currently at work.

Dara explains, “There is no greater pleasure than doing stand-up. When you tie a bow on a routine or find a gag that is unique to that night, the sense of satisfaction is immense. I can’t wait to start touring again!”

“There is no greater pleasure than doing stand-up.”

Page 29: FEEL ALIVE MAGAZINE SPRING 2012

Feel Alive Spring 2012 29

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW | FEATURES

Following his sell-out tour of the UK and Ireland in 2010, Irish funnyman

Dara O Briain hits the road again with a brand new show for 2012.

Catch one of the most charismatic, intelligent, fast-talking and downright funny live performers working in the

British Isles today at Coventry’s Warwick Arts Centre April 24 - 26!

Dara goes on to reveal that in this show he will be asking the audience about their jobs. He says that, “Some of the audience chat is based on my bewilderment with the world of work. I’m now institutionalised in my life, so real people who do real work baffle me! Nowadays, people very rarely do jobs we learnt about as children like butchers or bakers. A guy the other night said he was in investment insurance, whatever that is!”

Dara muses that the difficult part of stand-up is finding topics to talk about. “But once you have found them, your natural stance takes off. This far into a career, you’re like a sitcom character. Your persona takes over. What’s my persona? It is argumentative but with a tendency towards misadventure. It’s not the most catchy title in the world, is it?”

The comedian, who this spring is also presenting Dara O Briain’s School of Hard Sums, a fascinating series on Dave about how you solve mathematical problems, continues that, “If you do gigs in colleges these days, you find out that the students are studying really specific subjects. They’ll say things like, ‘I am studying the freezing of fish - not just any fish, but flat fish!’”

Dara continues to elicit such a rush from stand-up that he cannot see a time when he will ever want to retire from it. He concludes that, “As long as you’re still getting and giving pleasure from performing, you don’t want to stop. The Rolling Stones are still getting and giving pleasure from performing - so what’s the problem?”

So what themes will Dara be addressing in his new tour, “Craic Dealer Live”? As he has just hit 40, he will be discussing the subject of ageing. He says that, “There is a long section about whether we genuinely shift to the right as we get older. Once we reach a certain age, are we on the slippery slope of golf club membership and reading other people’s planning applications? Is it just a lifetime of fighting tiny battles? The comic reflects that, “All stand-up shows are about ageing. They are always a snapshot of where you are at that moment. At one point in ‘Craic Dealer Live’, I start to ridicule the phrase, “Something for the dads”.

“I still love this as much as ever. I never want to give it up!”

“I’m now institutionalised in my life, so real people who do real work baffle me!”

Garry Kirton opened his top quality, men’s clothing store First for Men here in Coventry in 1984. With 49 years’ experience in the trade, Garry offers superb specialist knowledge and personal customer service.

What makes your business unique in Coventry?

First For Men provides top quality men’s clothing - from made to measure through to branded items such as

trousers from Meyers, and shirts from Olymp & Gabicci.

What can you offer customers that other stores may not?

Here at First for Men, I have loyal customers who return time after time to purchase their clothing from me; nothing is too much trouble. I can also offer a bespoke tailoring service which is second to none.

Where do you spend your time in Coventry city centre?

When I’m not at work, I prefer to spend my time at home, relaxing with my family.

What additions do you think may improve your customers experience in Coventry?

I’d like to see the cleaning and greening of the city centre continued at its excellent standard.

Best friends, Lisa Hollins and Michelle Conway have been selling top American produce here in Coventry for almost four years! Going from strength to strength, the dynamic duo have opened a brand new store in the City Arcade.

There is no other shop like us to be found in Coventry. Our bubbly and friendly staff pride themselves in their excellent customer service and the quality goods we have on offer.

What can you offer customers that other stores may not?

In our shop we stock unique products which are ordinarily only found in the USA such as Twinkies, Lucky Charms and Kool-Aid; a real taste of America right here in Coventry. ‘The American Shop’ is a really fun place to be!

Where do you spend your time in Coventry city centre?

We always love going to the Rufa Fish Spa found in the City Arcade here in the city centre.

Similarly, we particularly like to visit Coventry Market, there’s so much on offer all under one roof!

What additions do you think may improve your customers experience in Coventry?

We’d love to see some more unique and independent retailers like us here in the city. Some additional signage to highlight the smaller stores would also be useful.

INDEPENDENT REVIEWS | FEATURES

This issue, another eight Independent stores go under the spotlight in our popular new feature.

Just a stone’s throw from Coventry Cathedral, Earl Street’s hidden treasure has been feeding Coventry’s people for over 35 years. The only independent family run sandwich takeaway in Coventry’s student quarter offers fresh food, aromatic coffee, savouries and snacks. With over 700 lines you’ll be spoilt for choice.

What makes your business unique in Coventry?

Our food is made or cooked fresh on site daily. We are told our portion sizes are very generous and the overall package of service, quality and price is second to none. Sandwiches

are tailored to your taste and everyone gets something free from us, just pop in and ask!

What can you offer customers that other stores may not?

As well as the takeaway shop we also have a diner, if you can’t get to us, we’ll come to you with our sandwich van. We supply items such as fresh toast and bread pudding to take away as well as all day breakfast from when we open until the second we close the doors.

Where do you spend your time in Coventry city centre?

Most of our time is spent at The Deli. We’re often working out

how to give the most back to our customers. Our unique offers, knowledge of the area and our customer’s feedback affords us a good loyal customer base.

What additions do you think may improve your customers’ experience in Coventry?

Our regular customer research shows that they don’t want five of the same sandwich/coffee/shops within five minutes’ walk of each other. They want variety and choice, value for money served with a smile, that’s why we offer the range and service we do.

Butterfly Bras opened its lingerie store in Medieval Spon Street in August 2010. Prior to this Gill had operated a mobile bra fitting service which mainly specialised in mastectomy wear.

What makes your business unique in Coventry?

To my knowledge I am the only independent lingerie store in Coventry. I offer a personal fitting service, appointments out of normal trading hours and home visits in the Coventry and Warwickshire area for those unable to get to the shop. I also

offer a specialist service for those ladies requiring mastectomy lingerie.

What can you offer customers that other stores may not?

As an independent store I am not committed to only just one brand and stock a wide selection of highly respected brands, styles and sizes to suit most occasions that are perhaps not offered anywhere else in the city.

Where do you spend your time in Coventry city centre? I use a city based hairdresser, I shop in Coventry market for fresh

fruit and vegetables. Sometimes I use local bars/restaurants and takeaways. What additions do you think may improve your customers’ experience in Coventry?

I’d love to see a wider selection of independent stores. Further promotion of what is available in the city in terms of shops and stores; recognition of historical streets and the shops, bars and restaurants within them.

Heslyn’s is a friendly, family business which has been trading for 33 years, established by Karen’s late mother, Heslyn Smith. Bestowed with the ‘Coventry Business Woman Award’, Heslyn also launched the ‘Enterprise Rehearsal Scheme’, which gave women advice and support needed to start a business. Heslyn’s was voted the ‘Best Black Hair Salon’ in 2011.

What makes your business unique in Coventry?

We are professional hairdressers. Our Ethos is to maintain a real presence in the community and provide advice for European and

African Caribbean hair. We offer a whole range of services to include cuts, hair relaxing, perms, weaving, plaiting, bridal hair and have an attached retail store, which provides aftercare services for our customers including make-up.

What can you offer customers that other stores may not?

The aftercare service is an essential part of the hair industry. We recommend products that are tested and good for the customers’ hair. We have customers that travel to our salon from Leeds, Kent, Stafford, Rugby and Leamington Spa.

We also offer a 10% discount to senior citizens on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and to students on Fridays.

Where do you spend your time in Coventry city centre?

I enjoy spending my time in the West Orchards shopping centre and the facilities of the SkyDome.

What additions do you think may improve your customers’ experience in Coventry?

I would love to see some additional parking available for my customers who come here to the city.

Malcolm began his hairdressing career at the Hotel Leofric located in Coventry’s Broadgate 35 years ago. In February 2009, he expanded his business and opened his own store where he is found today in the city centre’s Bull Yard. What makes your business unique in Coventry? We have seven experienced and hardworking stylists with at least 10 years hair dressing experience, specialising in the latest and best cutting and

colouring techniques. We also have dedicated afro-Caribbean and Chinese hair stylists who add a wider dimension to our clientele. What can you offer customers that other stores may not? We have two private beauty rooms on site offering a full range of specialist beauty treatments along with a separate nail bar. Our spacious, air-conditioned salon is light and relaxing for our customers who are all made to feel very welcome!

Where do you spend your time in Coventry city centre? Living in south Leicestershire, if I’m not working in the salon, I do most of my shopping at Coventry’s Marks and Spencer or Debenhams. What additions do you think may improve your customers‘ experience in Coventry? I believe that businesses and customers alike would benefit from some large named retailers coming to the city along with some more unique and independent retailers.

Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne on 6th February 1952 although her official Coronation didn’t take place until a year later on 2nd June 1953.

She also becomes only the second British monarch to reach such a landmark, following in the not too small footsteps of Queen Victoria, who celebrated her diamond jubilee in 1897.

Coventry has long held links with Her Majesty, when as a princess, a young Elizabeth had inaugurated Coventry’s new city centre in May 1948, laying the foundation stone of a new Broadgate. Eight years later she returned to the city as Queen to lay the foundation stone of the new Coventry Cathedral on March 23, 1956. The completed building was consecrated on May 25th 1962 by the Bishop of Coventry Dr. Cuthbert Bardsley and was attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret and the Earl of Snowdon, Antony Armstrong-Jones at a ceremony attended by more than 3,000 people!

A celebratory long weekend of parties and pageantry will mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June, including an additional bank holiday on June 5th, ensuring that everybody has got even more time to commemorate the event. Why not join in the festivities and hold a fantastic street party with your friends, relatives or neighbours? Kick off the summer in style and celebrate with your community!

If you are planning a street party, Coventry City Council has made the whole process easier. Simply email [email protected] and all of the information, advice and appropriate forms will be sent for you to complete.

If you’d like more information on jubilee events, please visit www.royal.gov.uk

QueenDIAMOND Hang up the bunting, put on your party hats, wave your Union Jacks and join in the celebrations across the city as 2012 sees Her Majesty the Queen celebrate her Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years at the forefront of the British monarchy.

If you’re intending to plan your own St George’s day or Jubilee street party, the city centre’s shops have everything you could possibly need, whether for a spring barbecue or a lively get together with friends, Coventry has it all.

ST GEORGE | FEATURES

For 1700 years the tale of St George has become true legend, a story in which both fact and fiction seem to have somewhat merged into one fascinating yarn of historic bravery and urban myth. Everyone knows St. George as the Patron Saint of England – but did you know legend has it he was born and died in Coventry?

16th century author Richard Johnson claims in his famous “Historie of the Seven Champions of Christendom” that George was the son of Lord Albert and born in Caludon Castle with a “blood red cross on his arm and a dragon on his chest” in the early part of the 3rd Century.

The popular story tells of a menacing dragon threatening the city which was only appeased by gifts of human flesh, particularly that of young maidens - yikes! The townspeople drew lots to choose the victims until, one day the lot fell on the King’s daughter, forcing him to sacrifice her to save the town.

St. George learned of the princess’ plight and bravely fought and defeated the dragon to save her, becoming a hero to all, the whole land over. It seems that this may be stretching the truth somewhat, however with very little actually known about the legend of St George, it may be easy to see why fiction is perhaps viewed a little more romantically than fact!

St George was gruesomely beheaded on April 23rd, 303 AD for refusing to renounce his Christian beliefs and there, the legend of a hero was born.

So perhaps our city has more reasons than most to commemorate its very own local hero during the annual St. George’s Day celebrations! April 23rd is a day of both festivity and memorial, where up and down the country the flag of St George waves proudly as family and friends join to celebrate our Patron Saint.

St George vs...Shakespeare!On April 23rd in the newly developed Broadgate, St George will be facing a new foe as he takes on William Shakespeare…at TABLE FOOTBALL!

Without a dragon in sight, the competition promises to be just as serious and ferocious. Members of the public can choose which of these English icons to support and take on an opponent of the opposite team. If table football isn’t your thing then there’s a penalty shootout competition, or a chance to see how fast you can kick a football in the “speed cage”. There are prizes and t-shirts on offer for all the winners, so come along with the whole family for a fun filled day, where you may even find yourself serenaded by the young William or challenged by St George! The event is taking place to celebrate Coventry’s involvement in the London 2012 Olympic Games as a co-host city as well as celebrating two of Britain’s most famous and recognisable characters.

Join us in Broadgate from 11am - 3pm, before later on that day the City of Coventry Stadium will come alive with the first football test event - tickets are available at £5 for children and £10 for adults; visit www.ricoharena.com to find out more.
