In Engelbrecht

Vir meer inligting, skakel Riaan by 015 516 1897 of 084 406 5536.

Dié einste vroulike tru-grawer operateur, me.

Mulaudzi.

Following a recent national newspaper’s claim that at least 650 women and children have been raped in Limpopo since the begin-ning of the year, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said they would ask the provincial police commissioner to release the rape statistics.

This announcement follows a recent docu-ment that was leaked in the City Press that more than 650 rapes have been reported across the province since the beginning of the year. This has led the DA to describe the current situation as a crisis and unacceptable.

Haar identiteit is steeds onbekend.

Dramatiese wending in saak

Regs: Mev.

Foto verskaf.

Rape of our women and chil-dren is out of control, not only in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and the province, but nation-wide.

This statement was made by the State during the sentencing of a man who had raped his 12-year-old stepdaughter. The 46-year-old man from Waterval appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to a charge of rape.

During his court appearance it came to light that the man, who was a security guard, was caught red-handed raping his stepdaughter. The man had locked the girl’s mother in her room before he went to the girl’s

room. When the mother woke up and found her door locked and her husband gone, she unlocked the door with a spare key and started looking for her husband. When she could not find him, she went to check on her sleeping daughter. Upon opening her daughter’s door, she found her husband raping her daughter.

During a medical examina-tion, semen was collected from the girl, which was positively linked to the farther. The inci-dent took place in June of last year and the man was arrested in September after he had fled from his home.

According to the man’s plea explanation, he was drunk when

he raped the girl. He also said that he was suffering from a kidney disease and had only completed Grade 10.

During his court appearance, the court conceded that liquor might have played a role but shot down claims about his poor health and education. “You didn’t plead guilty out of remorse, but rather because you were caught red-handed,” said regional magistrate Pat Cloete during the man’s sentencing.

The man was sentenced to 18 years’ direct imprisonment. He was also declared unfit to carry a firearm and his name had to be recorded in the national sex offenders register.

Rambau asks magistrate to withdrawSenior Regional Magistrate Ron nie Rambau this week asked the magistrate in his corruption trial to withdraw from the case.

Rambau and his co-accused, attorney T E Lubisi and ex-state prosecutor Estene Willemse, appeared in the Musina Mag-istrate’s Court on Tuesday. Both Rambau and Lubisi, who

conducted their own defence, brought an application demand-ing that the presiding magistrate step down from the case. They claim that the magistrate had befriended some of the state’s witnesses.

At the time of going to press on Wednesday, the court had yet to give a verdict on the three accused’s application.

In the meantime, the Magi-strate’s Commission is very cau tious about answering any questions put to them regarding Rambau’s suspension.

The Zoutpansberger was, however, able to confirm that Rambau is still provisionally suspended and still receiving his full magistrate’s salary and benefits.

Flagship development now a white elephant Musina’s dysfunctional multi-million-rand monument to incompetence and greed ... This is an expert’s description of the Musina Spiru-lina Plant - once hailed as an impressive first for Africa.

The installation was developed and erected with a government sponsorship of R6 million, for what was hailed as the world’s best commercially pro-duced spirulina. The product, described as superior and unique in various respects, experienced several high-profile professional marketing launches be-fore disappearing from the market. It left a sprawl-ing, elaborate plant with expensive, sophisticated equipment idle and in complete dereliction. The equipment once included a specially imported turbo-rotor drier of more than R1 million which also ground the material into a fine powder, for increased and faster absorption of this health-food supplement made from algae.

Enquiries about the present status of the project were initially met with total silence by the Musina Municipality.

In the year 2000, the Musina Municipality was among the beneficiaries of government funding for the creation of local economic projects. The municipality received a donation of R6 million and decided on the production of spirulina. The spirulina project was wholly owned by the mu-nicipality, through an entity called Zelpy 1903 (Pty) Ltd., controlled by a board of directors, with the then municipal manager, Mr Abram Luruli, as CEO. Luruli said at the time that the idea was to generate income and channel the profits back to the municipality to facilitate other economic develop-ment projects to benefit the community at large.

During one of several launches of the product, which started with a launch in Sandton in 2007, the then premier of Limpopo described the project as a public-private partnership which could become a good role model for the entire country to emulate.

In the absence of any response from the munici-pality to questions about the present status of the project, the international expert who assisted the municipality in the design and development of the production plant during a period of several years, Prof Johan Grobbelaar of the University of the Free State, was approached. He confirmed that he was informed in 2007 by the municipal manager that his expertise and services were no longer required. This happened after Grobbelaar had also completed the training of an assistant at the plant. The trained assistant afterwards left for alternative employment elsewhere.

“I later received reports of increasing neglect and deterioration at the plant. It seems as if the end result is that a multi-million-rand investment which was unique in Africa and had all the potential of an inspiring success story for South Africa, had become yet another statistic of bad management and avarice,” Grobbelaar said.

Last week, in a belated response to repeated enquiries, municipal spokesperson Mr Wilson Dzebu confirmed that the Musina Municipality had decided to discontinue the project because it was not sustainable. “It did not bring in anything for the municipality, so it was decided not to continue with the project. At present, the future usage of the site and the equipment is under deliberation,” Dzebu said.

“Ek het dus my onkostes in ‘n lomp-som teruggekry.

A 39-year-old Zimbabwean cross-border bus conductor was sen-tenced to eight months in jail for attempting to smuggle 10 undocumented people into South Africa through the Beit Bridge border post.

George Chindani was convicted on his own plea of guilty to contraven-ing a section of the Immigration Act (assisting border jumpers) by a local magistrate, Ms Gloria Takundwa. He was sentenced to eight months in jail, of which four months were condi-tionally suspended for five years. The remaining four months were further suspended on condition that he pay a fine of US$250.

The prosecutor, Mr Jabulani Mberesi, said that on 26 March, at around 23:00, Chindani arrived at Beit Bridge Border Post in a cross-border bus belonging to his employer, Hawk Bus Company. The bus was carrying 10 undocumented passengers, five adults and five mi-nors, aged between seven months and 13 years.

The bus was stopped at the exit gate by police officers. As part of the border formalities, the passen-

gers were asked to produce their travel documents and they failed to do so. They indicated that Chindani had offered to assist them illegally across the border. Chindani was then arrested.

Meanwhile, two Beit Bridge men were each fined US$200 or one month in jail for trying to assist two border jumpers to cross into South Africa through Beit Bridge Border Post. Peace Ishmael Dziva (29) and Sithandazile Mpunzi (29) were con-victed on their own pleas of guilty to charges of assisting border jumpers by Magistrate Takundwa.

Mr Mberesi said that on 30 Feb-ruary, Dziva and Mpunzi connived and went to Beit Bridge Border Post where they met Tsepo Moyo and his son, Tapelo. The two did not have passports and they approached Dziva and Mpunzi, who offered to assist them to cross into South Africa illegally for a R100 fee.

They were given the money be-fore proceeding with the two un-documented travellers to the exit gate where they were intercepted by a police officer manning the gate, leading to their arrest.

Gebrekkige straat- en huis-nommers is steeds ‘n probleem in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Volgens mnr.

probleem is.Eweneens ‘n groot probleem

‘n ondersoek kan help indien daar iets by jou huis gebeur,” sê Meissenheimer.

New councillor electedA well-known preacher and motivational speak-er in the Musina municipal area, Pastor Grace Mavhungu (42), was sworn in as the new African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) councillor for Musina Municipality. Mavhungu replaces Councillor Jenitta Banda, who died last month.

The down-to-earth pastor took the oath before Senior Magistrate Willem Guldenhuis during the recent council meeting which took place at the municipal council chamber, which was filled to capacity.

Widely known as Pastor Grace, Mavhungu says Christians have a role to play in maintaining the democracy of this country. “Christians should not only dominate in churches, they should also be part of the government structures since they are part of the democracy of this country. If God does have authority over the ones who are elected, then we should also play our part to make sure that people’s political wishes are maintained.”

Apart from involvement in politics, Mavhungu says, the most important thing that all Christians should do is to pray. “We should also strive to use God’s word to set the standards of living and then be willing to share the truth with everyone around us. We need to gently instruct those around us in the truth of God’s word and how it can enhance and improve our lives. We should vote with our faith as a guide on important issues.”

She says churches should provide a place for dialogue between individuals. “It should be a place where those who have Jesus as Lord in common can converse about touchy topics and walk away knowing that, whatever happens, God is the one who is really in power. Whether you like it or not, to be a citizen, with the freedoms we have, means responsibility to those freedoms. If we disagree

with something, we need to vote to make our voices heard.”

Mavhungu says she will definitely contribute to the development of improved service delivery in Musina. “The fact that I served as ward commit-tee member and my involvement with different developmental organizations is an advantage to me as I know the communities that I’m going to serve. I will join hands with other councillors to fulfil our mandate of bringing a better life to all the people of Musina.”

Pastor Grace Mavhungu is the new ACDP Councillor for Musina Municipality.

Limpopo Astronomy and the Soutpansberg Astronomy Club (SAC) visited Forever Resorts Warmbaths in Bela-Bela on Saturday, 6 April, as part of their second IAU/OAD (International Astronomical Union/Office of Astronomy for Development) event of the year.

With more than 2 500 day visitors and resort guests, the organisation had a hugely successful turnout. The telescope was setup a couple of meters away from the astronomy display. it was pointed towards the sun as a steady stream of interested people descended and were awed to see close-ups of our nearest star, with some clearly visible sun-spots, as well as one earth-sized one.

“A huge number of children returned repeatedly, bringing new friends, and it was good to see how many of them showed such a keen interest,” says Mr Kos Coronaios of the SAC.

Guests arriving for the evening’s stargazing were greeted with views of Jupiter on a big screen, fol-lowed by the Great Orion Nebula and the famous Trapezium.

“Many questions were asked with particular re-gard to the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), which shows a growing awareness among the general public,” Coronaios added.

For more information about upcoming IAU/OAD events, phone Coronaios on 079 148 4934.

The National Small Contractor Network and building material retailer Cashbuild have joined forces to assist small contractors in Giyani by facilitating an informative trade workshop on 18 April.

“Many builders, electricians, plumbers and painters don’t have access to vital trade informa-tion, such as where to find finance, how to raise a loan, tendering and more. These workshops aim to help small builders address these challenges,” says Mr Thembelani Tukwayo, project director. He has lined up many interesting speakers for the workshop.

“SARS will be on hand to share useful informa-tion with Stanger-based contractors on tax-related issues. There will also be representatives from the NHBRC and the CIDB to explain their workings to contractors. We are fortunate to have Cashbuild on board, making this ambitious project possible,” said Tukwayo.

Cashbuild has teamed up with its many suppliers to present technical advice to workshop delegates. Cashbuild CEO Werner de Jager says that this is an exciting project that is aimed at uplifting the general standard of the building industry. “It is our intention to make a positive contribution to the many small contractors in Stanger and this is one of many interventions that we will be rolling out going forward,” says de Jager.

De Jager says that in the competitive environ-ment currently prevailing in the building industry, it is important for the small contractors to have all the information that will help them deliver their projects on time and at a high-quality standard, ensuring that they secure more building projects in the future.

To attend this workshop, apply at the Cashbuild

store in Giyani or call Happy Moloto at 079 026 5604.

Help for small building contractors

Unarine Nengwekhulu, a Grade 11 learner of Louis Trichardt High School, obtained 96% at the quarterfinals of the National Eisteddfod Academy at the Pro Musica Theatre in Pretoria on 16 March. She achieved the excellent marks for her dramatic English monologue, which she wrote herself. Unarine has been selected to go through to the semifinals on 26 April.

This is the sight that will meet the team which is to arrive in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) later this month for filming part of the “Breaker” Morant documentary at the historic Fort Hendrina. The monument, which is officially in the care of the Makhado Municipal Council, is a severely neglected steel structure, at present pasted all over with unauthorized posters advertising illegal abortions. A bronze plaque at the locked entrance door mysteriously disappeared some time ago and was replaced by courtesy of the local branch of the Voortrekker youth movement.

Hoe lyk me. Ander dae was daar net by tye water.

Immigration authorities at Beit Bridge Border Post did not encounter serious conges-tion problems during the Eas-ter holiday, despite handling an increase in the number of travellers compared to last year during the same period.

According to Zimbabwean immigration statistics, 85 518 travellers passed through Beit Bridge Border Post during the Easter holiday, which is an increase compared to 78 939 during the same period last year.

The local assistant regional immigration manager in charge of the border post, Mr Charles Gwede, said the border was less congested compared to the previous years.

“This is largely because the two holidays were close to-gether and those who travelled during the December holiday might possibly have decided not to travel in anticipation of con-gestion and spending several hours in the queues,” he said.

The highest number of trav-

ellers was recorded on Easter Monday, when 20 089 people passed through the entry port. The smallest number of travel-lers who passed through Beit Bridge was on Easter Saturday, which saw 14 365 people using the border post. Zimbabweans constituted the highest num-ber of travellers who passed through the border during the holiday period.

The volume of traffic also went down during the holi-days, following the closure of the commercial section of the South African Revenue Service (SARS), which mainly handles heavy-duty vehicles. The Zimbabwe Revenue Au-thority officials (ZIMRA) said they handled an average of 1 000 cars daily during the Easter holiday.

Gwede said immigration officials managed the situa-tions efficiently, following the deployment of 16 relief officers from other stations.

“We had put the necessary

mechanisms in place to deal with an anticipated congestion during the holiday period,” he said.

Zimbabwean and South Af-rica immigration officials at Beit Bridge Border Post held an inter-border meeting with other local key stakeholders during the run-up to the Easter holi-day. The meeting was aimed at exploring various strategies to ensure quick clearance of travellers during the holiday period. Clearance of travellers on the South African side had also improved during the holi-day, following a visit by Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor prior to the Easter weekend to check on the performance of the border systems.

More officers were also de-ployed at the border and a pre-clearance facility had also been created at the Musina show grounds as part of a deconges-tion strategy.

More traffic, less congestion at border

The Makhado Municipality’s mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi (center, back), recently donated school uniforms to 18 pupils at Johannes Mulambilu Secondary School. He said that the time of going to school with tattered uniforms was now in the past. This came after the Makhado municipal library had identified needy pupils at the school through their outreach programmes. Photo supplied

Avid bass anglers are invited to enter for the Tribal Boats Nandoni Bass Classis 2013.

This two-day team tourna-ment will take place on 24 April from 07:00 until 16:00 and on 28 April from 07:00 to 12:00.

The first prize for the heavi-est bag over two days is an 18½-foot Bass Xtreme boat hull and single-axle trailer, worth R85 000. This prize is spon-

sored by Tribal Boats and the boat will be built to the win-ner’s specifications. These are standard specifications and all extras are for the customer’s own account. Apart from the main prize, some lucky draws will take place and R1 000 prize money will be given for the heaviest bass caught. En-try for the competition costs R1 000 per team, with a maxi-

mum of two anglers per boat. The competition will serve as a fundraiser for the DR Church Levubu, under the supervision of Letaba Bassmasters. SABAA rules will apply and no dead fish will count. Entry forms are available from [email protected] (084 483 03410). Accom-modation can be booked at Fish Eagle Caravan & Camping (Ronelle: 083 276 1070).

The co-ordinator of Musina Ministry of Compassion’s shelter, Gilbert Rukamba, in front of the shelter tents.

The shelter of Musina Ministry of Compassion (MMC), where hundreds of dislocated people from neighbouring states find temporary shelter when entering South Africa at Beit Bridge, is suffering a severe shortage of food to assist the people who shelter there at present.

The shelter, located in Nancefield in Musina, consists of several large tents served by a kitchen and ablution facilities in permanent structures. The tents and the permanent buildings were donated by several international organizations with a presence in Musina.

The co-ordinator at the shelter, Mr Gilbert Ru-kamba, says the shelter serves a daily average of 150 people. They are mostly from Zimbabwe, but also from Somalia and Malawi. Rukamba says the shelter is totally dependant on donations. Anybody who can assist with maize meal and/or ingredients for sheba can contact him at 082 043 7004.

The tents which must provide shelter are not very effective against cold and rainy weather.

The well-organized feeding scheme for destitute people at the AFM El-Shaddai’s Hands of Mercy centre near the central business district in Musina is situated several kilometres to the east of the MMC shelter in Nancefield. Shelter is also provided at the Roman Catholic Church in Nancefield.

Anhetico Properties

The Way, the Truth and the Life

John 6:22-40. I like gifts.

I am sure everyone enjoys receiving gifts.

The Bible has something to say about gifts and our Scripture reading for today tells us that all who trust in Jesus Christ as their Saviour are the gift of the Father to His Son. This means that if we are Christians we are very special to Jesus and His Father.

Before the world existed, God wrote the names of His children in the lamb’s book of life. The heavenly Father then gave those people to His Son. Verse 37 tells us: “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”

God gave us the most wonderful gift of all, He gave His Son to be our Saviour. We read those lovely words in John 3:16. Jesus became man and died upon a cross, bearing our sin. He received the punish-ment due to us for our sins. And because of His life and death He saved His people and sent the gift of the Holy Spirit.

It is the Holy Spirit who shows us our need of a Saviour, and gives us the gift of faith to believe in Jesus as our redeemer. The Holy Spirit makes us hate sin and seek forgiveness from God.

If you are saved you are very special to God. He chose you to be saved. You are special to Jesus, because He came and changed your heart.

Gifts are special. If you trust in Jesus you are special to God. May God bless you.

Story: The battle in the courts to determine who should be the

real king or queen of the Vhavenda is gaining momentum, and amend-ed papers were filed on 8 April in the Thohoyandou High Court. The parties ask the court to intervene and have the decision to make Toni Ra-mabulana the king of the Vhavenda declared invalid.:

Comment: Dimbanyika was recognised as Chief in 1996.

At 21, Masindi was born in 1991, meaning that her father was not Chief at the time of her birth. Be-sides that, her father was never King of VhaVenda ... on what grounds does she want to be recognised as Queen?

What she and her fellow broth-ers don’t understand is that there was never a King of VhaVenda ...

even the late PR Mphephu was a Chief. The position of King is a newly created provision, after extensive consultation through the Nhlapo commission on traditional affairs.

The commission made the rec-ommendation, the Mphephu Royal family made the recommendation ... so what is the problem?

Why did they not raise their objection during the commission which sat since 2003? Why now?

Mbulaheni, as self-appointed head of the Royal Council, signed a directive in 1997, recognis-ing Toni as rightful heir to the Mphephu Royal Family. There is documentary proof to this ... if he has forgotten, he will be reminded in court.

Graad 4’s sê dankie vir Lalapanzi

Brief

Bobodi, in

so ’n kompleks sluit.

Die volgende gedeelte uit die be-rig is totale wensdenkery: “Accord-ing to the department, the proposed development will have a positive impact on the local economy, crime will be less and contributions to be paid to the municipality will eventu-ally result in beter service delivery.”

I have a complaint ...

If this is to be believed, this stems from Thomas Cook Holidays, listing some of their UK clientele’s genuine complaints.

1. “I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.”

2. “It’s lazy of the local shopkeepers to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during ‘siesta’ time -- this should be banned.”

3. “On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restau-rant served curry. I don’t like spicy food at all.”

4. “We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our swimming costumes and towels.”

7. “The beach was too sandy.”

8. “We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as yellow but it was white.”

10. “Topless sunbathing on the beach should be banned. The holiday was ruined as my husband spent all day looking at other women.”

12. “No-one told us there would be fish in the sea. The children were startled.”

13. “There was no egg-slicer in the apartment.”

14. “We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.”

15. “The roads were uneven..”

16. “It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home.”

17. “I compared the size of our one-bedroom apartment to our friends’ three-bedroom apartment and ours was significantly smaller.”

18. “The brochure stated: ‘No hairdressers at the accommodation’. We’re trainee hair-dressers -- will we be OK staying there?”

19. “There are too many Spanish people. The receptionist speaks Spanish. The food is Spanish. Too many foreigners now live abroad.”

20. “We had to queue outside with no air-conditioning.”

21. “It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel.”

22. “I was bitten by a mosquito. No-one said they could bite.”

23. “My fiancé and I booked a twin-bedded room but we were placed in a double-bed-ded room.

We now hold you responsible for the fact that I find myself pregnant. This would not have happened if you

had put us in the room that we booked.” They walk among us and they vote!!! Be

afraid! Be very afraid!

MAAR as jy ‘n jaar gelede R1 000 se

(Contd from P18)Kofi and Khuliso’s times

were slower at the SA champi-onships - over 15 seconds. They both made it to the semifinals, where Kofi was fourth in his heat and Khuliso was sixth.

Rendani Ndouvhada, U/17 athlete of the school, said that it was his fourth time that he had gone to the SA championships. He felt hurt by the fact that, at the Vhembe district meeting on 16 February, he was not treated fairly and his appeal was un-successful. “At Vhembe they

cheated me, when they swopped my name with another athlete’s in the 400mH,” Rendani said. He wasn’t allowed to partici-pate in that event at provincial level in order to compete in the nationals. Fortunately, Rendani competed at provincial level in the 110mH and came third, with a time of 13.69s. This time qualified him for competing at national level, where his time was more than a second slower.

All three athletes, however, lauded the excellent organisa-tion at national level and de-

scribed their experience there as “great” and “very good”.

Questions had been put to LIMSA (Limpopo Schools Athletics) concerning the poor organisation and late notifica-tion of athletes for the SA competition.

The questions on the previ-ous fiasco were posed to the LIMSA secretary on 7 March and comprehensive answers were finally received almost three weeks later, on 25 March (See accompanying article).

By Linda van der Westhuizen

Late notification causes upset for top athletes

By Linda van der Westhuizen

The Limpopo Schools Athletics (LIMSA) secretary said that they had received “a lot of concerns from Vhembe in particular”, following the omission of key athletes of the Vhembe district for the provincial schools athletics meeting in Polokwane at the begin-ning of March.

Some athletes had been omitted from the list after wrong positioning at the Vhembe district athletics meeting held in Musina on 16 February, and some as a result of maladministration. Ath-letes of the secondary, as well as primary school in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), were affected.

Subsequently, these athletes were not permitted to participate in their best items at the LIMSA meeting at the Peter Mokaba stadion and had their dreams shattered of competing at the South Af-rican Schools Athletics (SASA) championships.

“Unfortunately, we could not do anything as qualification for the nationals was based on the qualifying standards as set out by SASA. We selected the team based on the qualifying standards,” said Mr Peter Maluleke, secretary of LIMSA per email on 25 March.

Why were the athletes’ names omitted? Mal-uleke said that LIMSA had received team lists from all the districts on 20 February for the plac-ing of athletes according to events. “We [LIMSA] do not take responsibility for any omissions by any district; however, we are able to include athletes in the lane drawings if we are alerted timeously before the championships,” Maluleke said and added that human errors occur all the time. “If an athlete has been omitted on the finals list after qualifying, it is the duty of the team managers to raise their concern speedily and such omissions could easily be rectified.” The athletes,

however, found it nearly impossible to have the mistakes reversed.

Maluleke did say that a workshop would be held with the Vhembe district and that they would subsequently recommend all districts to buy and use the JOBA program, which is used by both LIMSA and SASA and is highly reliable, “so that we do not encounter such mistakes in the future.”

Schools definitely have the right to see the district lists before the provincial event, so that they can inform LIMSA of any dissatisfaction.

The correct procedure at district level, as ex-plained by Maluleke, is that the district organisers form a local organising committee (LOC) around the end of January or early February and plan the sequence of meetings. The organiser invites knowledgeable people to assist and they develop the event programme and issue it to schools. They invite qualified and experienced officials to officiate at events. The results are captured and distributed to the three levels - clusters, circuits and schools - for confirmation. The district team list is compiled (with the first three athletes in all events per age group) and distributed to all levels. “Once everyone is satisfied with the team, the district chairperson signs the team list and then submits it to the Limpopo secretariat for lane drawings and placement,” Maluleke said. The Limpopo organisers will then send the reprinted list to the district for confirmation and if there are no indications of omissions, then it is certified to be correct.

The Vhembe athletics chairperson is Mr Milton Munyangane (082 740 6294 or 076 222 7356), and Mr J Nthenzi (076 653 6272) is the secretary.

LIMSA received “a lot of concerns”

Three athletes from Louis Trichardt High School in the Vhembe district were selected for the Limpopo team to participate in the South African schools athletics championships in East London during the second last week of March. They were notified of the travelling arrangements on the same day that they had to board the bus. All three were selected to compete in the 110m boys hurdles and reached the semifinals. From left to right are Rendani Ndouvhada (U/17), Kofi Apea Adu (U/19) and Khuliso Muthsembele (U/19).

Late notification causes upset for high school’s top athletesFollowing the schools athletics fiasco where the Vhembe district omitted ath-letes from their provincial list, athletes suffered once more when they were notified at the last minute that they had to board the bus to the national athletics championships in East London.

Three athletes from Louis Trichardt High School in the Vhembe district were selected for the Limpopo team to partici-pate in the national championships. The problem was that they were unaware of this fact until the last minute. According to the athletes, the athletics representatives

notified the school on Friday, 15 March, that they had been selected, but they were notified of the arrangements only on the Monday morning. Ms Elsa Kriek, deputy principal at the school, confirmed that the children had been told on Monday morn-ing that they had to board the bus for East London at 12:00.

“The organisation was really not good. We went home and packed and boarded the bus at 12:00,” said Kofi Apea Adu, U/19 athlete and headboy of the school. “I was a bit disappointed, because I was not mentally ready for the competition since

I did not think that I had made the team. But I went and did my best,” Kofi said.

“Kofi, Khuliso and Rendani did not do that badly, considering that they had not trained at all after the provincials at the beginning of March,” Kriek said.

Kofi was third in the 110m hurdles for boys under 19 at the Limpopo champion-ships. His time there was 14.1s. Another U/19 boys 110m hurdles athlete, Khuliso Muthsembele, came fourth at the pro-vincials in a time of 14.3s. The first four athletes broke the record.

(Contd on P 17)
