Haar krag is summier afgesit.

‘n Ander inwoner, me.

Me. For Chris Groenewald, aka the Mad Rabbit, tattooing started off as a hobby. He fell in love with this individualis-tic art, and business started to do so well that, fi ve months ago, he opened his own stu-dio, Mad Wabbit Tattoos, in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

The studio is situated in Burger Street, in the Maranatha

Centre.Chris is assisted by Sharen

Smith, who is also a very ca-pable tattoo artist. Both of them can also do body piercings. They are in love with piercing and tattoos as an expression of art, but tattoos in particular. “It is addictive; once you’ve started, you just want to get another tattoo,” says Chris. His

first experience with tattoos was when he got his fi rst tattoo. That was when he started to get interested in becoming a tattoo artist.

With an eye for the creative, Chris is able to do freehand or stencilled tattoos, and if a design is too intricate, he will be upfront with clients. Every procedure is 100% safe, and

only sterile equipment is used to ensure peace of mind for their clients.

Both Chris and Sharen have a professional bedside manner. They also use only the best quality ink to ensure that a tattoo does not fade too easi-ly. If a tattoo does fade, after years, Chris and Sharen will just touch it up to make it look as good as new.

The Mad Wabbit Studio also offers fl exible business hours for clients. The studio is open, on weekdays, from 10:00 till 18:00. For clients who have a full-time job, an appointment can be made with Chris to suit them.

For more information or appointments, Chris can be contacted at 084 729 4651 or Sharen at 081 014 9176.

As ‘n

I am oiling the relationship between the residents and the municipality)”.

Engels by te voeg.

Hy is opslag dood.

This Thursday, Makhado (Louis Trichardt) will be part of national stage marches and gatherings that will voice con-cern over farm murders.

On that day, the protest group named Red October will be one of several international demon-strations that will release red balloons across South Africa and cities in New Zealand, Australia and the USA to demand the pro-tection of white South Africans’ ethnic minority rights enshrined in the Constitution.

Such a march will be hosted by the Friends of Red October group in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Interested people are invited to join the protest that will be gathering at the Rugby Lapa from 10:00.

“We call on people all over the world to release red balloons into the skies, in protest against the inhumane slaughter and oppres-sion of the white people of South Africa,” reads a press release on the Red October group’s website. “No longer will we be silent about the oppression of the white South African ethnic minority. No longer will we silently en-dure the killing of our people on our farms, and in our towns and cities,” the group further states.

The group will also protest the “destruction of public in-frastructure, filthy government hospitals and the state of the environment”. The group also wants to be in charge of its own education system and wants the South African government to provide a safe environment for all – among other demands in its constitution.

March to place focus on farm murders

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo is fed-up with the province’s continuous water crisis and has now turned to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) for help.

This dramatic step was taken by the DA, fol-lowing a memorandum of complaint that they handed in at the Limpopo office of the premier on 19 August. The memorandum contained demands about water supply across the province. According to the DA, premier Stanley Mathabatha’s office was mute. “This leaves us no option. We will today escalate this battle on behalf of the communities of our province by handing the water dossier to the

SAHRC,” said the DA’s provincial leader, Jacques Smalle, on Tuesday.

According to Smalle, the dossier that they com-piled contains shocking images from the province’s five districts of people who still have to share water sources with animals. In some of the rural areas, Smalle said, up to 10 000 people have to share three communal taps. “This is a violation of our people’s most basic human rights,” he said.

Another concern to Smalle and the DA is that municipalities fail to spend infrastructure grants and this contributes to the dilapidation of water infrastructure. The dossier that was handed over to the SAHRC for investigation will be reinforced by daily picketing that the DA will undertake at the office of the premier.

The Agapé African choir has received an invitation from the largest church in the world, the Yoido Full Gospel Church in South Korea, to sing there in 2015. “That would be one of the stops of a proposed tour, which would be an awesome opportunity,” said choir leader Pastor Grant Clifton this week.

The moment that Dr Kim Sung Hae Cho, the spouse of Dr Yonggi Cho, founder of the million-member church in Seoul, gave the invitation, tears flowed. Dr Kim was one of the main speakers at the International Pastors and Leaders Confer-ence (IPLC) hosted at the Glory Christian Centre (GCC) in Kota Kinabalu (KK) in East Malaysia, situated on the island of Borneo. Two years ago, Dr William Vun of GCC challenged Pastor Sam

van Niekerk of the Agapé Chris-tian Centre in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) to bring the African sound in worship to Eastern Asia. Pastors Grant and Bernice Clifton of Agapé, both gifted musicians, rose to the challenge and arrived at the conference on 24 September this year with a 28-member choir.

The Borneo Post reported on the choir on 3 October: “The multi-ethnic Agapé Choir from South Africa, with their unique sound and rhythm and colourful costumes, enriched the sessions …” The Borneo Post also men-tioned that over 700 delegates and thousands of local Christians and pre-believers from nine countries took part in the four-day ILPC. There were delegates from South Africa, Australia, Bangladesh, Philippines, India,

Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia.

“At the conference, the choir had the opportunity to perform several times and do a wide array of items, which all went very well. We had a very exciting and impacting time,” said Pastor Grant. They added a portion of Shakira’s Waka Waka to their praise song Wena Mkululi (Lord, You are my freedom). The con-ferees absolutely loved it and they had to repeat the song over and over. Bernice’s crystal clear Pie Jesu”was also encored.

The theme of the conference was Holy Spirit in His Church. Dr Kim, who is over 70 years old, prayed personally for each delegate who wanted prayer. Her church is well known for its Prayer Mountain and their strong intercessory prayers. Dr Vun

encouraged attendees to even start all over again with the Holy Spirit, while Pastor Tan Seow How pleaded with everyone to be encouragers of young people. In the past 15 years, his Heart of God Church in Singapore grew from five members to about 3 000, with only 500 who earn a salary.

The whole group of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) consisted of 50 people, some of whom had the opportunity to visit the scenic Tioman Island in West Malaysia and Manukan Island in East Malaysia.

Crime news

The collective impact of the proposed coal mining activities in the Greater Soutpansberg needs to be assessed and taken into account, is the cry arising to protect the environment and agriculture for future generations.

Interested and affected parties (IAPs) cannot fully assess the collective impact of the proposed mining activities in the Greater Soutpansberg and Limpopo without, at least, a regional strategic environmental impact assessment (RSEIA). This is the opinion of the Vhembe Mineral Resources Stakeholders Forum (VMRSF) through their attor-ney, Mr Christo Rheeders.

Australian mining company Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) requested a meeting with the VMRS forum. On 28 August, CoAL spokesper-son James Duncan said that CoAL was aware of the forum and “will engage with the forum, as with all interested and affected stakeholders, in a transparent and collaborative manner within the regulated processes”. The new forum prioritizes the environment and agriculture, so as to protect these for generations to come.

“The profit of coal mining in the short term should be weighed against the impact of coal mining on the environment over the long term. It seems that mineral and water use licenses are issued with no regard for the full impact of mining on the environment. Is this what we want for our children?” says an expert of Bench Marks Foun-dation, measuring principles for global corporate responsibility, Mr David van Wyk.

Following acquisition, CoAL reorganized the Mbeu Yashu (Greater Soutpansberg) project, com-prising nine areas, into three regions. These are the Chapudi region (comprising the Chapudi, Chapudi West and Wildebeesthoek area), the Makhado region (comprising the Makhado Project and the Telema and Gray combined – formerly referred to as the Makhado extension- and the Mount Stuart

and Generaal area) and the Mopane region (com-prising the Voorburg and Jutland area).

The total prospecting-rights area of the Chapudi region covers nearly 40 800 hectares. The total Makhado region covers just over 32 900 hectares, of which the Makhado Project is 8 190 hectares. The Mopane Region was further consolidated with various additional NOPRs within the Voorburg and Jutland area. The total consolidated area covers 26 000 hectares, of which 11 500 hectares lie to the north on Voorburg and 14 500 lie to the south on Jutland.

The Jutland Project affects the farm Sitapo of the Van Zyls of ZZ2, well-known for their tomato production. ZZ2 (Pty) Ltd is the largest privately owned producer of tomatoes in the world and sup-plies 40% of South Africa’s tomatoes.

“With Mr Philé van Zyl of ZZ2 coming on board in the umbrella organization, VMRS forum, we want to stress the importance of Limpopo as the bread and fruit basket of South Africa, now threatened by coal mining. Remember that more than 45% of the R2 billion annual turnover of the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market comes from agricultural industry within Limpopo. The province produces about 75% of South Africa’s mangoes, 65% of its papayas, 36% of its tea, 25% of its citrus, bananas, and litchis, 60% of its avocados, 60% of its tomatoes, 285 000 tons of potatoes, and 35% of its oranges,” said Mr Wally Schultz, chairperson of SOLVe (Save Our beautiful Limpopo Valley) and one of the office bearers of the VMRS forum.

CoAL’s new CEO, Mr David Brown, described the Mbeu Yashu Project as the catalyst for the long-term growth of the company.

“The Department of Mineral Resources has ac-cepted the Company’s NOMR applications for the Mopane, Generaal and Chapudi projects … Further exploration on these areas is expected to occur in 2014,” Brown said.

The collective impact of the proposed coal mining activities in the Greater Soutpansberg needs to be assessed and taken into account, is the cry arising to protect the environment and agriculture for future generations. The Limpopo province is looking for a solution to clamp down on the trade in illegal cigarettes.

This was the mission of an anti-illicit trade summit that was held in Polokwane last Thursday, 3 October. “If we don’t do something fast enough, we stand to regret [it] sooner rather than later,” said the Limpopo premier, Stanley Mathabatha, during the opening of the summit. The summit was also attened by the Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa (Tisa), The Directorate for Priority Crime Inves-tigation (Hawks) and the University of Limpopo.

The Hawks hosted the summit in order to pri-oritise the investigation of cigarette smuggling.

Mathabatha identified Limpopo’s borders with

Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique as the critical strategic buffers when it came to the illicit trading and smuggling. According to provincial police spokesperson Brig Hang-wani Mulaudzi, Mathabatha was referring to Health Minister Arron Motsoaledi’s signing of an anti-smuggling protocol which aimed to eliminate tobacco syndicates, and to track and trace such products from their manufactures to their destinations.

Mathabatha said more than 50% of all illegal cigarettes are smuggled into South Africa from Zimbabwe. “There is a serious need of working together with the various law enforcement agen-cies of those countries. The same way in which we are waging war against rhino poaching, we should do with cigarette smuggling,” he said.

Mathabatha said the government was commit-ted to offering their support to stop this illicit trade. Tisa echoed the premier’s statements. Tisa said that, according to the National Council Against Smoking, there would be fewer cheap products for children and adults to smoke if smuggling were curbed.

Mulaudzi said that the summit was the culmi-nation of the on-going collaboration between the tobacco industry and law-enforcement agencies to curb the scourge of illicit cigarettes that flood the South African market.

As the effect of the illicit trade of cigarettes was discussed during the two-day long summit, it concluded with General Molatjana, Deputy Provincial Commissioner DPCI: Limpopo and National DPCI Cigarette Champion, accepting and taking ownership of implementing the outcomes with the backing of all who were involved in developing the strategy into work-able plans.

Realty 1 Louis Trichardt congratulated Mrs Tshamano Edith Ramalamula on her dedicated service to the franchise. Edith has been employed by Realty 1 Louis Trichardt since it opened its doors in 1993. “We would like to thank her for loyalty, reliability and friendliness. Edith has served four different dealer principals, as well as numerous agents over the years and always continues to serve delicious coffees and teas with a smile,” said principal Gwen Loots. Pictured from left to right are Gwen, Edith and Alex Jandrell, also from Realty 1 Louis Trichardt.

The Realty 1 team can be described as dynamic and vibrant.

Principal Gwen Loots leads by example and her experience and knowledge of 12 years is invaluable to the company. She has earned numerous awards for Realty - both personally and as a franchise. The most prestigious of these are the Ambassador of the Year (2004) and Top Country Agent for 2006 and 2007.

In 2013, Gwen made some very interesting appointments, and the team now boasts of an exciting diversity. Graceful Altie Pretorius is the agent who spe-cializes in listings. Adri Taylor has an eye for the full potential of each property - since she is an enthusiastic interior decorator - and was Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 in Musina. Lizet Joubert has made the transition from commercial pilot to estate

agent quite effortlessly and ex-cels in her work.

Realty 1 Louis Trichardt has a rental department, where Josh Jandrell is attending to owners’ and tenants’ needs and concerns.

The whole team relies on the wonderful efficiency of Margaret van Zyl and Elizmari Bell, whose admin and computer skills keep the heart of the business beating. Their friendly demeanour makes everybody feel welcome.

The Realty 1 IPG head office expressed its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Realty1 Louis Trichardt for having been an exemplary member of the brand for the past 20 years.

“Realty 1 has proudly serviced South African property owners for more than 50 years, and this is only possible with business owners who live our dedication to our customers on a daily basis,” said Hano Jacobs, Realty 1 IPG’s chief operating officer.

Jacobs congratulated Gwen Loots and Alex Jan-drell of Realty 1 Louis Trichardt for maintaining such high levels of service, dedication and commit-ment over two decades in the ever-evolving prop-erty industry. “When considering the heights the Louis Trichardt business has achieved, it is hugely commendable that you have retained your humility and unfloundering work ethics,” said Jacobs.

Despite being one of the smallest franchises by geographical area, Realty 1 Louis Trichardt has consistently been placed in the Top 10 achiev-ers during the group’s annual national awards,

frequently outperforming much larger franchises and businesses. “Your ability to service the entire scope of the property industry makes you true industry leaders and a wonderful example and inspiring role model to new entrants into the industry. Thank you for your continued dedication to self-development and education in this rapidly changing environment, your ability to embrace the evolution that technology brought, your investment in the elevated standards as required by law, and your compliance and adherence in acquiring the highest levels of education required by our gov-erning body,” said Jacobs.

Realty1 Louis Trichardt has an impeccable track record of satisfied customers, testifying to the fact that buying and selling a home is much more than a business deal to Gwen and her team. “You truly personify our company slogan ‘Sure we sell prop-erty, but people is our Business’. It is with great pride that Realty 1 IPG head office congratulates you on your 20-year anniversary. Well done, Realty 1 Louis Trichardt!” said Jacobs.

“Almal sal saamstem dat van-jaar se revue ‘n groot sukses was.

Brief

Dankie aan borge by Triegie gholfdag

“Bring ‘n stok!” skree hy weer.

Ek glo wanneer hulle eendag as nuttige volwassenes mekaar elders weer raakloop, gaan hul eerste reaksie dalk wees: “Wow, onthou jy nog dáárdie aand ...”

Open Letter to our readers

We ask you to please not use the Press Council

The word “boycott” should never be used without care-

ful consideration. Much like the term “press freedom”, it has different meanings to different people. A Google definition states that boycott means to “withdraw from commercial or social relations with (a country, organization, or person) as a punishment or protest.”

In a truly bizarre step, our two small newspapers have decided to appeal to readers to boycott the South African press regulation system. We ask readers not to make use of the press ombudsman’s office and not to use this body to complain about human rights abuses by big media houses. We do this because we really believe that a system of self- or co-regulation is the best way to protect freedom of speech in our democracy. If, however, the system loses its integrity, it needs to be severely criticised and people should stop using it until such time as steps have been taken to restore the trust.

Before explaining why we make this strange request, I must mention that the fault for all this does not lie with the Press Council SA (PCSA) and especially not with the people working there. The only criticism that they should get is for being too lenient and allowing the bullies in the industry to pressurize them into not protecting the integrity of the Press Code.

Let me start by explaining what press regulation entails, especially in our own (fragile) democracy. In its own words: “The Council, the Ombudsman and the Appeals Panel are an independent co-regulatory mechanism set up by the print media to provide impartial, expeditious and cost-effective adjudication to settle disputes between newspapers and mag-azines, on the one hand, and members of the public, on the other, over the editorial content of publications.

The mechanism is based on two pillars: a commitment to freedom of expression, includ-ing freedom of the press, and to excellence in journalistic practice and ethics.”

The inherent promise being made is that members of the public do not have to revert to expensive lawyers and advocates to protect their rights. These rights include the right to dignity and the right to privacy. Ordinary members of the public should never fear the press, for the press will always strive to maintain the highest ethical standards. If not, they will be held accountable …

Well, unfortunately this is not the truth. The scoun-drels in the industry succeed in manipulating the process and literally get away with (character) murder. Not that South Africa is unique in this respect. Abuses by big media players have led to inquiries in both the United Kingdom and Australia over the past couple of years. In both countries the issue of press regulation came under scrutiny and in the UK the system is in the process of being dramatically reformed.

Many a reader may be asking by this time, why the change of heart? Why now attack a system that we helped to shape? Well, it’s because we were forced to see things from a different angle, namely that of someone who was involved in a complaint about the abuses of a big media player. In this specific case the media player was one of Media 24’s gutter press publications, Sondag.

The first anomaly with regards to the PCSA process is that if you complain about the conduct of a big media player such as Media 24, you do not deal with their editors (as the procedure states you should). You deal with their lawyers and these are people extremely ex-perienced in fending off what they perceive as a liability. If the complaints procedure states

that the editor or in his absence the sub-editor should answer the complaint, it is interpreted that the procedure doesn’t prohibit the use of lawyers. It’s like walking unarmed into a negotiating room where the other party has a team of armed guards. Nothing in the proce-dure prohibits them from being there and doing the talking, they state, and the Press Coun-cil meekly agrees.

After the prescribed seven days during which the media player must answer, they can merely indicate that it’s not enough time. They do not sup-ply reasons, as requested by the procedure, and again the public advocate condones this.

If the complainant becomes pushy and insists that the big media player be held account-able, things turn really nasty. With few excuses left, the bully resorts to technicalities and one of these lie in Section 1.6 of the complaints procedure. This “escape clause” states that the Press Council must withdraw if a matter is pending before a court of law. Seeing that the complainant exercised his or her constitutional right and chose to have the complaint heard by the ombudsman and not in any court, this provides a bit of a dilemma. The solution is, fortunately, not too hard to find – the big media player simply gives its attorneys instructions to sue the com-plainant!

This, of course, creates an ethical dilemma for the industry, but it’s seemingly of little concern to Media 24, which is by far the biggest publisher in the country. Their actions, however, mean that the industry indulges in hypocrisy. The industry expects the public to use the system of co-regu-lation, but it’s not something they turn to when other people exercise their right to freedom of expression.

The sad part is that the Press Council looked the other way

and allowed their biggest partner to urinate on the Press Code. As the ombudsman stated, his hands are tied.

A request to the Chair of the Appeals Committee to force Media 24 to be held account-able was turned down after two months. The appeal was unsuccessful because it was not clear to the judge who the complainant in the case was.

A former press ombuds-man, Mr Joe Thloloe, once remarked: “This system is not about bureaucracy – it is about ‘excellence in journalistic practice and ethics’.” (Berger, 2009). If only this wisdom could have been present today.

The sad reality is that actions such as these strengthen the call by some politicians to have the industry regulated by government. The resolutions taken in 2007 at the Polokwane conference still haunts the industry, especially the threat of setting up a Media Appeals Tribunal (MAT) with statutory powers. At that stage, a number of “experts” ridiculed the ANC’s point of view and made it out to be a way to stifle any criticism. Perhaps it was, but perhaps not.

In Australia, an independent media inquiry was launched in September 2011, which was headed by Judge Raymond Finkelstein. It examined the Australian media industry’s regulatory framework and re-ported back to the government in February 2012. The issues highlighted, which are just as relevant to our own industry, are that the press:

* wielded enormous power for its own ends

* was subservient to big business and put commercial interest ahead of editorial policy

* resisted social change* paid more attention to the

sensational than the significant* had become a danger to

public morals* had unjustifiably invaded

peoples privacy

The Leveson inquiry in the United Kingdom came to simi-lar conclusions. The following

is an extract from the summary of the report that was published earlier this year:

“The evidence placed before the Inquiry has demonstrated, beyond any doubt, that there have been far too many occa-sions over the last decade and more (itself said to have been better than previous decades) when these responsibilities, on which the public so heavily rely, have simply been ignored. There have been too many times when, chasing the story, parts of the press have acted as if its own code, which it wrote, simply did not exist. This has caused real hardship and, on occasion, wreaked havoc with the lives of innocent people whose rights and liberties have been disdained. This is not just the famous but ordinary members of the public, caught up in events (many of them, truly tragic) far larger than they could cope with but made much, much worse by press be-haviour that, at times, can only be described as outrageous.”

It is extremely sad that one has to say that the same is happening in South Africa. Certain members of the press (very few) are considering themselves to be bigger than the Press Code. The Press Council does not hold them accountable. Even if these are isolated cases, it makes very little difference. If these unscrupulous cowards (because the culprits are nothing less than cowards) get away with a single human rights abuse, it should be unacceptable. Even worse is that these cowards sit in their Johannesburg and Cape Town offices and prey upon or-dinary citizens. They are afraid of the rich, the ones who can afford expensive lawyers to try and hit back. They try to make entertaining caricatures of or-dinary people, and when these people complain, they hide behind claims of freedom of expression. Newspapers such as our own that function in small communities have to face the consequences of abuses by big media. By their reckless behaviour they create a sense of revulsion among ordinary

people, to such an extent that journalists are feared by read-ers and ostracised. This, again, is not limited to our country.

The Leveson inquiry made some interesting remarks about the regional press: “Although accuracy and similar com-plaints are made against local newspapers, the criticisms of culture, practices and ethics of the press that have been raised in this Inquiry do not affect them: on the contrary, they have been much praised.”

Our call to people to boycott the current press regulatory system is a very small gesture to voice our contempt for what these industry bullies are doing. It will make little differ-ence to the big media players, because we are so small that our publications don’t even register on their radar, but we believe it is the right thing to do.

At the same time, we fully respect every reader’s choice in this regard. Should a reader be upset about something that we publish, they should feel free to use whatever mechanism they feel is proper. Should a complainant opt for the Press Council, we will abide by that and do our utmost to resolve it via this route. We do, however, appeal to readers to not use this mechanism and rather contact us directly. We promise to go out of our way to listen to any complaints and act in an ethical manner.

Finally, we are working hard behind the scenes to pressurize the regulatory body to restruc-ture again, with more measures put in place to stop big media from getting away with such abuses. We cannot allow the regulatory body to be (to use British Labour leader Ed Mili-band’s expression) “a toothless poodle”.

Sy is nou ´n toesighouer by ´n byeboerdery in Tzaneen.

Ons het lanlaas so ‘n standard gimnnastiek gesien,” sê me.

Me.
