Kontroversie omhul nou die gru-onge luk waarin drie inwoners van Makhado (Louis Trichardt) verlede week oorlede is.

Kort ná Gilbert Gerard (43), Rick Co-etzee (64) en Innocent Hove se afsterwe op Maandag, 26 Augustus, het gerugte reeds die rondte begin doen dat ‘n trop rondlo per beeste die blaam dra vir die ongeluk. Dié inligting kon nie verlede week deur die polisie bevestig word nie.

Ná die Zoutpansberger se berig ver-skyn het, het lesers geskakel en vertel wat hulle op die noodlottige dag op die ongelukstoneel gesien het. Die lesers se weergawes stem ooreen. Op voorwaarde van anonimiteit, het hulle die koerant vertel wat gebeur het.

Daar was glo nooit ‘n wilde dier wat oor die pad gehardloop het en voor Gerhard se bakkie ingespring het nie. Dit was, volgens die lesers, ‘n trop van tussen 10 tot 20 rondloperbeeste. Een ooggetuie, wat in ‘n mini-bus taxi gery het agter Gerhard, het glo gesien hoe

Gerhard uitswaai vir die beeste. Die man het verder ook gesien hoe die polisie later by die ongelukstoneel opgedaag het en eers die beeste by ‘n plaas ingejaag het, voordat hulle aandag aan die ongeluks-toneel geskenk het. Nog ‘n ander leser, wat kort ná die ongeluk gebeur het verby die toneel gery het, het ook die beeste in die pad gesien.

Gerugte dat dié beeste aan ‘n polisie-bevelvoerder behoort, kon nie bevestig word nie.

Op grond van die lesers se onthullings het die Zoutpansberger met die onder-soekbeampte in die saak gepraat om uit te vind wat gebeur het. Sy weergawe het egter nie met die lesers se weergawes oor-eengestem nie. Volgens die ondersoekbe-ampte het “die bestuurder van ‘n ander bakkie” wat op pad was na Makhado (Louis Trichardt), regs uitgeswaai vir ‘n “wilde dier”. Gerhard het toe glo links ge-hou en die dier het voor hom ingespring, waarna hy glo probeer uitswaai het en beheer oor sy bakkie verloor het.

“Daar was nie beeste op die pad gewees nie,” het die konstabel pertinent gesê.

Provinsiale polisiewoordvoerder kol. Ronel Otto is verlede Vrydag genader met vrae rondom die ondersoek. Sy is ook gevra hoekom polisie eers die beeste sou injaag eerder as om te help. Wat betref die eienaarskap van die beeste, het sy gesê daar moet eers bepaal word of daar beeste op die pad was of nie.

So ‘n ondersoek, het Otto gesê, kan net gedoen word as die mense met inligting na vore kom en ‘n verklaring by die polisie gaan afl ê. “As daar ‘n verklaring is, sal die ondersoekbeampte gaan onder-soek in stel,” het Otto gesê.

Otto het ook gesê dat die polisie nie noodhulp opleiding het nie, en daarom nie gemagtig is om mense op ‘n onge-lukstoneel te help nie.

“Die polisie se werk is om ‘n ongeluks-toneel te beveilig,” het Otto gesê.

Intussen het van die lesers wat die koe-rant geskakel het, aangedui dat hulle met die ondersoekbeampte sal skakel om hul verklarings vir hom te gee. Otto het ook gevra dat as daar nog mense is wat iets gesien het tydens die ongeluk, hulle ‘n verklaring moet afl ê.

Hulle ontvang agt goue toekennings. Voor, van links na regs, is regisseur Marcel van Niekerk (goud vir regie, teks en kostuum), choreograaf Stasha van der Spuy, Jamy Jonker (goud: individuele spel), Douglas Archer (brons: individuele spel), Marietjie Leonard (goud:individuele spel) en Liesbet Voigt (silwer: individuele spel). “Dit is regtig puik vir ons skool en ons dorp. Daar was al in die verlede twee stukke van groot stedelike skole, soos Kaapse skole of Pro Arte in Pre-toria, wat deurgegaan het, maar ek dink dat hierdie ‘n eerste vir ‘n plattelandse skool is,” het die skoolhoof, mnr. Henry Denner, Maandag gesê. Twee tiener-toneelstukke van Hoërskool Durbanville in Kaapstad is ook genooi om van 24 tot 28 Sep-tember by Aardklop op te tree.

“Dis uitstekend vir die twee jong manne vir die werk wat hulle gedoen het,” het mnr. Denner gesê. Die jong manne na wie hy verwys is die twee regis-seurs, Marcel van Niekerk van Stemtoon en Nico Schee pers van Flikker, wie se stukke onder-skeidelik die Gauteng-Suid-streek en die Gauteng-Noord-streek van die ATKV Tiener-toneelkompetisie gewen het.

Stemtoon het opslae gemaak deurdat dit vir die regisseur en span ‘n eerste op die ver-

hoog was. “Ons verwagtings is oorskry. Nou moet ons die beoordelaars se repliek noukeu-rig inwerk en baie oefen voor Aardklop,” sê regisseur Marcel. Die stuk se choreograaf, Stasha van der Spuy, sê dat die stuk op ‘n hoogtepunt eindig, met Jamy Jonker se laaste dans waardeur die hoofkarakter se deurbraak uitgebeeld word.

Wat sê die tieners? “Toe die nuus kom dat ons groep deur is Aardklop toe, was ek oorweldig met groot vreugde! Daar het ‘n nuwe opgewondenheid in my geborrel,” sê Jamy. “Toe ek gehoor het dat ons deurgaan, het ek geweet al die harde werk was die moeite werd!” sê Marietjie Leonard. Stemtoon ontvang as streeksfinalis ‘n totaal van agt goue medaljes, drie silwer en een brons. Jamy en Marietjie kry elkeen goud vir individuele spel, die ekstra karakters kry goud vir ensemblespel, Willem Martin kry goud vir verhoogbestuur, Willem, Donovan Kirsten en Chané Jordaan kry saam goud vir tegniese versorging, en Mar-cel kry goud vir regie, teks en kostuum. Die beoordelaars het melding gemaak van die be-sonderse eenheid en samewer-king van die groep.

Nico Scheepers van Flikker sê dat hulle baie dankbaar en

trots is om die skool die vierde agtereenvolgende jaar by Aard-klop te verteenwoordig.” Dit voel te goed om waar te wees. Die kompetisie is baie rof, maar ons sal die beker terugbring!” sê Flikker se hoofkarakter, Talita Kloppers. Ndodzo Mawela sê dat dit heerlik is om deel te wees van die groep, wat al soos ‘n “tweede familie” voel. Flikker se Nico Scheepers ontvang goud vir regie, ontwerp en beligting en André du Preez ontvang goud vir individuele spel. Die stuk as geheel ontvang goud vir tegniese afronding en goud vir ensemblespel. Talita, Ndodzo, Didie Moshapo en Medupi Ramaboea ontvang silwer vir individuele spel.

Buiten Hoërskool Louis Trichardt en Hoërskool Durban-ville, is die ander ses skole wat tienertoneelstukke Aardklop toe neem Hoër Meisieskool Bloem-hof, Heatherdale Sekondêre Skool, Hoërskole Jan van Rie-beeck, Martin Oosthuizen en Zwartkop, asook Potchefstroom Gimnasium. Die Hoër Meis-ieskool Bloemhof het in 2012 die wisseltrofee en prysgeld by Aardklop gewen, nadat Louis Trichardt in beide 2010 en 2011 met die louere weggestap het.

Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) sees its own board’s approval of the future expansion of the Vele Colliery as an enormously positive achievement. This according to CoAL’s annual financial statement announced by new CEO Mr David Brown on 30 August.

In the meantime, pro-environment groups have continuously opposed the coal mine’s “destruction of the beautiful Limpopo valley”, and have de-clared their intention to fight the Australian-based, Chinese-“funded” company nail and tooth. The frustration of continuous litigation was named by CoAL’s former CEO, Mr John Wallington, as being a reason that he stepped down (www.fm.co.za). Brown announced that a significant milestone this year was the investment of $100million and the signing of a cooperation agreement with strategic investor Beijing Haohua Energy Resource Co. Ltd (BHE).

“The Board has approved our Vele technical plan and expansion project, subject to off-take agreements to support the procurement of funding for the capital and working capital expenditure. This now allows the company to move forward in developing a project which will produce sufficient future cash flows to support the group overhead. This is augmented, in the short term, by the company receiving a credit-approved term sheet which will provide sufficient bridging financing for CoAL,” said Brown.

Though the company’s losses were R148million for the year ended in June 2013, Vele’s expansion plan is to the worth of R220million. The con-struction is planned for 2014 and the expanded production for 2015. CoAL was granted a mining right for Vele, near the Mapugubwe World Heritage Site, at the beginning of 2010.

Brown said that the Vele Colliery was adversely affected by higher than normal rainfall in January 2013, resulting in flooding of the pit and the dec-laration of a force majeure. A force majeure is a

French term (for a “greater force”) and is a clause included in contracts to remove liability for natural and unavoidable catastrophes that interrupt the expected course of events and restrict participants from fulfilling obligations. After cessation of mining activities, Brown said that the colliery recommenced the railing of export quality thermal coal in May this year.

Water expert Mr Hendrik du Toit said that the flooding might imply that the mining company did not comply with the regulations on minimum standards for water use of mines. “The mines con-veniently ignore the fact that surface flow forms part of surface water and therefore it is also a water resource and subject to the regulations that prohibit placing residue deposits or dirty water areas within the 1:100 flood line area. Mines can be ordered to rectify the polluting effect,” said du Toit.

“What is going to happen to the gaping hole at the Vele Colliery in the rainy seasons in the months that pass while funding for the expansion is being secured? It is filled with coal mud. There seems to be very little activity there, and if they are not actively pumping out water, there could be a danger of polluted water seeping into the underground aquifer. Vele is located 5km from the river bank of the Limpopo River as the crow flies,” said Suzet Burger, a concerned resident who used to manage Dongola ranch for CoAL.

CoAL also announced that it is putting up its non-core assets up for sale, including Woestalleen in Mpumalanga and Mooiplaats in Ermelo. What if the Vele Colliery eventually becomes an operation held for sale? Who is then going to fulfil CoAL’s intention expressed to groups to completely reha-bilitate Vele? Those are questions coming to mind, especially when an expert of Bench Marks Foun-dation, an organisation which measures principles for global corporate responsibility, Mr David van Wyk, says that 6000 mines in South Africa had been abandoned, despite promises made.

Hy sê internasionale rolspe-lers is reeds bewus van die stra-tegiese ligging van die dorp ten opsigte van die res van Afrika en van die ontwikkelingspotensiaal van die omgewing. Benewens die uitgebreide landboubed-ry-wighede en mynboupoten-siaal in die omgewing, skep die buitengewone kosmopolitiese samestelling van die bevolking en gemeenskap in die dorp ook sy eie buitengewone moont-likhede. Hy het verwys na die groot toestroming van inwoners uit ander Afrika lande en ook uit die Ooste (Pakistan en China) wat hulle op die dorp vestig en

hulle hoofsaaklik op die handel toespits. Dit bring mee dat die dorp op die oomblik ‘n oorweld-igende vraag na sakeruimte en -persele beleef.

Benewens die Chinese groot-han delsentrum wat reeds in bedryf is aan die noordekant van Musina, is een van die my-ngroepe wat in die omgewing gevestig is ook nou besig met ‘n uitgebreide behuisingsprojek vir sy personeel op die dorp.

Die konstruksie van die beoogde nuwe hoofweg sirkel-roete by die dorp, wat verlig-ting sal bring vir die huidige verkeersdrukte in die sentrale sakegebied, sal na verwagting ook vroeg in die nuwe jaar begin.

A gang of roof thieves struck again in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and made off with thousands of rands.

This time the Standard Bank ATMs on the corner of President and Songozwi Street (next to Midas) were targeted. A group of spectators quickly gathered at the corner on Tuesday morning, as the news of the crime earlier that evening spread like wildfire. Provincial police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike confirmed the incident.

The thief/thieves made use of a grinder, he said, to cut a hole in the roof right above the ATMs.

Once inside, they used the grinder to cut open the ATMs’ safes to get at the money.

Sadike said on Tuesday that the local police were investigating the possibility that a gang that specifically targets ATMs and vaults might be ram-pant in the Vhembe district. In the past, Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has seen many similar thefts. More recently, several ATMs were either cut or blown open in Thohoyandou, Vivo and Alldays.

A case of housebreaking and theft was opened for investigation. At the time of going to press, no arrests had been made.

Munisipale werkers het hier die week weer by die Louis Trichardt Landdros-hof bymekaar gekom vir die hofverskyning van ‘n inwoner van die streek wat daarvan beskuldig word dat hy ‘n munisipale amptenaar aan-ge rand het.

Die werkers, almal van die elektrisiteitsafdeling, het Dins-dag die hof se galery vol gesit vir die verskyning van die 60-jarige Eddie Luies, wat aangekla word van aanranding met die opset om ernstig te beseer. Luies sou na bewering ‘n munisipale amptenaar van die elektrisiteitsafdeling, mnr. Wisani Tlhabela (34), in Maart

vroeër vanjaar aangerand het.Luies was nie Dinsdag by

die hof nie. Sy saak is volgens ‘n vooraf reëling tussen sy prokureur en die staatsaanklaer uitgestel. Dit is gedoen omdat daar nou ‘n teen-dossier deur Luies by die polisie teen Tlha-bela gelê is.

Beide die dossiere van Tl-hbela en Luies sal nou na die Openbare Vervolgingsgesag se direkteur gestuur word vir beslissing om die partye te vervolg of nie.

Tlhabela het destyds aan die Zoutpansberger se susterskoe-rant, die Limpopo Mirror, gesê dat Luies hom deur die gesig geklap het. Hy het vertel dat hy

Luies se bakkie verbygesteek het op ‘n grondpad. Luies het agter sy dogter op haar perd gery. Hy beweer dat Luies hom ingejaag het en toe hy stop, het Luies losgetrek en hom in die gesig geslaan. Volgens Luies het hy in ‘n woordewisseling betrokke geraak met Tlhabela, omdat laasgenoemde roekeloos bestuur het en derhalwe Luies se dogter se lewe in gevaar gestel het. Toe Luies later ‘n klag van roekelose bestuur teen Tlhabela by die polisie wou aanhangig maak, is hy gearresteer en moes hy ‘n nag en ‘n volle dag in die polisieselle deurbring.

Die saak is uitgestel tot en met 7 Oktober.

Luies-saak uigestel ná teen-dossier

Yahya Shoeb Jiwa (photo), the 45-year-old man from Makha-do (Louis Trichardt) who was sentenced to four years in jail on 21 June this year, asked the Louis Trichardt Regional Court this week for leave to appeal against his sentence.

After a brief court appearance on Monday, Jiwa’s application was, however, denied and he had

Jiwa was arrested in February 2011, following a police trap that was set by the South African National Parks’ Environmental Crime Investigation Unit and the police’s special investigation unit, the Hawks. He pleaded guilty to the charges relating to the illegal purchasing and pos-session of rhino horns.

Following Jiwa’s guilty plea, a drawn-out legal battle fol-lowed to persuade the court to rather hand down a sentence for correctional supervision. Jiwa’s application to ask for appeal, had it been granted, would have requested that his jail sentence be reduced to correctional supervi-sion. Jiwa’s advocate, Mr PA van Wyk, argued that there was rele-vant case law to convince a high-er court to reduce the sentence.

Van Wyk also brought up the issue about the money that Jiwa had paid to the police during the trap. This money, totalling R80 000, was declared forfeited by the State during Jiwa’s sentenc-ing and paid to the anti-poaching team of the Kruger National Park (KNP) to aid in the war against rhino poaching.

Van Wyk argued that the State had no authority to give the mon-ey to the KNP, and that it first had to go to the State Treasury, from where it could be channelled to State projects.

Magistrate Pat Cloete, who also heard the appeal application, dismissed the claims made by Van Wyk and said that the court had taken Jiwa’s financial, health and family situation into con-sideration, and that his sentence was fair.

“Working together is winning together,” said the Makhado municipal manager and the local AfriForum chairperson when they decided to bury the hatchet and work towards their common destination, the development of the town.

Mr Isaac Mutshinyali (MM) and Mr Wally Schultz had dinner together on Monday and decided to let bygones be bygones, referring to a situation about a year ago when former technical director Mr Thivo Ral-ulimi aggravated Schultz, who then called him by a derogatory name in the presence of the MM.

“That is history. We are now concentrating on a much bigger thing, the development of our town,” said Mutshinyali.

“AfriForum and the Makhado Municipality will engage at ev-ery level and win together. We

may work by taking different routes, but we will arrive at the same destiny,” Schultz said.

Mutshinyali said that working for this town was the greatest blessing that God had given him. At 05:30 in the mornings, he is driving around town to see things for himself. Though the sewage system is offi cially the responsibility of the Vhembe district municipality, Mutshin-yali said that he would not sit back and fold his arms “while a child stands inside a sewage dam inside his house”, referring to the overfl owing of sewage on the corner of Kleynhans and Pretorius Street. He said that an outside contractor would be in-volved if the root of the problem was not sorted out this week.

Mutshinyali also made the important announcement that his legal team is currently scruti-

nizing an agreement which will be signed between the Makhado and Vhembe municipalities. The agreement will eventually allow Makhado to use funds for certain services, which will then be refunded by Vhembe.

Schultz proposed that they work together to set an example of getting specifi c jobs done at cost and below, omitting the “tenderpreneurs”. He also refer-red to negative people who don’t want to give credit where credit is due. “We will defeat them with results,” Schultz said.

Mutshinyali referred to a municipal project to secure storm water drains against the damage done by trucks by erect-ing yellow pipes on either side. “We can’t just always cry about things. We have to think out of the box. We all aim to build the town,” Mutshinyali said.

Hy het hulle deur die nag bygestaan en eers teruggekom nadat ek weg is van die huis om te gaan skoolhou,” sê Juliana. “Dit tipeer sy lewe: ‘n dienaar. Hy het my so bederf! Wat hy vir jou kon doen, het hy gedoen.”

Ds. Pieter het met ‘n groep jong swart kinders vakansieveldtogte gehou en hulle geleer om te

evangeliseer, asook gehelp om hulle te laat leer. Vandag is sommige van

hulle vooraanstaande akademici, soos prof. Derrick Mashau, wat saam met prof. Koos van Rooy die diens om ds. Pieter se lewe te vier, waargeneem het. Die diens op 2 September in die Gerefor-meerde Kerk in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) is bygewoon deur

baie vriende oor kultuurgrense heen. Prof. Van Rooy het gesê dat lyding en onreg twee dinge was wat ds. Pie-ter nie kon verduur nie. “In ’n apartheidsamelewing het Pa mense wat anders was, liefgehad en gerespekteer. Dankie vir hierdie erfenis,” sê sy kinders.

Kort voor sy dood het ds. Pieter sy visie van ‘n sentrum

vir haweloses in die dorp met dringendheid gedeel en gevra dat ander dit sal help realiseer.

“Van al die dinge wat ons ons pa sien leef het, was sy verhouding met die Here die kosbaarste erfenis … Hy was eg,” sê sy kinders.

Dr. Pieter word oorleef deur sy vrou, Juliana, vyf kinders, Chris Kruger, Sarlina Prinsloo, Jan Kruger, Gerda Hayes en Mimi van der Walt en hul eggenotes en 15 kleinkinders.

Die heengaan van ‘n groot sendingman, dr. Markus Petrus Kruger, of dominee Pieter soos hy bekend was, laat ‘n leemte, maar sy nalat-enskap van die liefde van die Here in diegene wat agterbly, leef voort.

“Pappa het nie van kanker gesterf nie. Hy het gegaan omdat sy Vader hom kom haal het. Oor sy lewe hang daar net een woord in ons gedagtes: Vrede. Markus, die stryder, se stryd is verby. Petrus, die rots, se geloof het gebly ... in ons,” sê sy kinders in hul huldeblyk aan ‘n sonderlinge gelowige wat sy laaste sente sou uithaal om armes van kos en hulp te voorsien.

Pieter Kruger is op 10 Maart 1936 in Bloemfontein gebore waar hy in 1853 gematrikuleer het en ook sy BA graad verwerf het. Hy het sy onderwyskwalifikasie by UP amper voltooi, toe hy vir die bediening geroep is en hom as predikant in die Gereformeerde Kerk aan die Potchefstroomse Universiteit bekwaam het. Hy het ‘n doktors-graad in Missiologie verwerf.

Op 7 April 1962 is Pieter met Ju-liana, ‘n nooi Coetzee, getroud. Hulle eerste gemeente was in Ladysmith in kombinasie met Glencoe en Est-court, gevolg deur Lindley in die Vrystaat. Hul eerste volwaar-dige sendinggemeente was Daniëlskuil in die Noordkaap met sendingopdrag Kuruman, alles in voorbereiding vir sy lewenstaak, die De Hoop/Malumelele sending met ‘n sendingveld wat oor Venda, Gazankulu en Leboakgomo gestrek het. Buiten sy taalstudies in Grieks en Hebreeus, was hy Afrikaans, Engels, Zoeloe, Noord-Sotho, Venda en Tsonga magtig.

Na sy aftrede in 2001 het dr. Pieter dadelik met sendingwerk by die Kutama/Sinthumule maksi-mum gevangenis begin en daarmee volgehou tot drie weke voor sy dood op 29 Augustus. “As hy

Making a difference every step of the wayMakhado (Louis Trichardt) last week received a visit from a remarkable young woman who, on Friday, 30 August, had already spent four months on the road, running and cycling close to 7 700km to raise awareness regarding the plight of the rhino in Southern Africa.

Isabel Wolf-Gillespie from the Natal-Midlands paid a visit to several local schools as part of their Rhino Knights fundraising campaign under the Earth Awareness banner. The schools included Ridgeway College, Soutpansberg Primary, and both Hoërskool and Laerskool Louis Trichardt.

“Today, every 11 hours a rhino life is poached for its horn and at this current rate, the children of today will not lay their eyes upon this species as adults. Sometimes I feel daunted by the sad and shocking state of the rhino crisis and wonder whether what is being done is making a difference,” says Isabel. She says they truly believe that children are the future of conservation and that is why they are visiting schools all along their route to hold a presentation to pupils.

“Almost every time after we have been to a school I am inspired and motivated to carry on. There is ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ and it shines from within each of them. Lloyd and I are just two normal people trying to do something out of the ordinary, and we hope to inspire the children to believe in themselves and that their voices count,” says Isabel.

Isabel’s epic journey started in May this year and at present she and her support team is on their “home stretch” back to Durban.

But why all the effort? Isabel explains: “In 2009, Lloyd [her husband] and I did a journey with our horses around South Africa to raise awareness of African Horse Sickness ... This journey took 581 days and we covered 7 411km. Whilst travelling and living alongside our horses, going at their pace, they had become the non-judgmental barometers of our lives and changed us forever. The further

we travelled, the more aware we became aware of our horses and ourselves and the land we were riding through and we became deeper connected to everything. That is why we started our non-profit company, Earth Awareness, which is about creating awareness of self, others and the environment!”

What gave birth to the Rhino Knights campaign was what greeted them upon their return home.

“When we returned to our horse trail business, based on a reserve in the Eastern Cape in 2011, we were hit by a shocking and sad reality. The 11 rhino that used to live on that reserve had been killed and this sparked deep anger, sadness and complete help-lessness! It also sparked the wish to do something about it and, after moving away from the Eastern Cape to the Natal Midlands, we by chance moved 10kms away from rhino conservation icon Dr Ian Player,” says Isabel. She says that Dr Player saved the white rhino from extinction in the 60s and to-day, at 86 years of age, he is still fighting for their survival. “Ian became our mentor and after many conversations between Lloyd and myself and him, the ‘Rhino Knights’ campaign under the banner of Earth Awareness was born,” says Isabel.

As part of their Rhino Knights campaign, con-servation organisations, rangers, guides, reserves, breeders etc. are asked what they believe are the problems with the poaching crisis and what possi-ble solutions are? “This has been a complete eye opener for all of us and the more questionnaires are being filled out, the more we realize the value of it. After the completion of the campaign, we will evaluate this and get involved in active anti-poach-ing measures,” says Isabel. She urged citizens to support the Rhino Knights on Facebook or by visiting www.earthawareness.co.za.

“A united and loud voice through a virtual Facebook and Youtube Rhino Knights movement across the world will be heard, and is able to make demands to get governments to protect rhino and other wildlife!” says Isabel.

The choir, under leadership of Grant and Ber-nice Clifton, will exhibit all the items that will be performed overseas later in September. The choir will perform from rap to a capella, from kwaito to traditional African songs, to African Christian songs, as well as some more modern songs in English and some Afrikaans numbers too. This is Africa will showcase the choir, as well as dance items and some solo songs.

• TRIEGIES OPERETTE Inwoners kan reeds begin kaartjies koop vir Laerskool Louis Trichardt se operette vanaf 10 tot 17 Oktober.

Die dorp se kleuters kan op 9 Oktober vanaf 08:00 gratis na die optrede gaan kyk. Die volgen-de dag, 10 Oktober, kan die streek se bejaardes ook gratis gaan kyk, maar vanaf 14:00.

Vir die optredes vanaf 14 tot 17 Oktober moet kaartjies gekoop word en is beskikbaar by die skoolkantoor vanaf 5 Augustus. Die laaste optredes begin telkens om 18:00 en kaartjies kos R40 (voor), R35 (middel), R30 (agter) en R20 (vleuels).

• SPITBRAAI BY LEVUBU BASAAR Levubu se NG Kerk basaar begin Saterdag 14 September om 08:30 en bied ‘n gesellige middagete met vark- en skaap-spit-braai, potbrode, slaaie, pap en sous en heerlike basaarpoeding.

• ROCKING FOR RHINO FES-TIVAL South Africa’s second annual largest conservation festival, Rocking for Rhinos, will be held on 21 and 22 September at Franklyn Park in Hoedspruit, a rolling recreational park near the heart of the Kruger National Park.

With beer tents, vendors, activities and big-name South African and international bands, the innovative and unique two-day event promises to entertain and inspire everyone in the name of conservation. All profi ts raised from the festival go directly towards anti-poaching and certifi ed rhino-conservation initiatives.

The full lineup consists of bands and DJs from as far away as Zimbabwe and Namibia, who are donating their time to perform in the name of rhino conservation.

Entry cost R80 for a day pass or R250 for a full weekend pass, which includes camping space. Your ticket is your contribution to the cause! Gates open at 15:00 on Friday for camp-ing, and 08:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

Rico (the sniffer dog) and his handler, Etienne, will also be there. “This will be a great opportunity to meet this TV-star dog and to see him in action. We will hide some illegal rhino horn and Rico will fi nd it. Come see how he does it and have fun with us,” invite the two young-sters. The event takes place at the Hanglip Forest Gate (top end of Forestry Road), with registra-tion taking place from 07:00. Rico’s demonstra-tion is at 08:00 and the races take place from 08:30 until 10:30. There are great prizes to be won, with the categories being 3 to 5 years, 6 to 9 years, 10 to 13 years, high school and adults.

The two senior debating teams of Louis Trichardt High School both won three out of their four debates at the provincial trials at Noorderland High School in Polokwane on 31 August. Selections are still to be made for the provincial team that will take part in the nationals. The senior A team took fourth place overall and the senior B team fi fth place. Na afloop van Eric Louw Hoërskool se jaarlikse fondsinsamelingsprojek, naamlik hul Survivor dag, is die wenners aangekondig. Daar was talle pryse om te wen. Gelukkige trekkings het ingesluit die eersteprys van ‘n naweek vir vier persone by Forever Resort Tshipise, die tweedeprys van ‘n naweek vir vier by ‘n luukse jagkamp en die derdeprys van ‘n slagskaap. Die klas wat die meeste geld ingesamel het, was die Graad 10L klas wat ‘n skooldag afgekry om die dag by Tshipise deur te bring. Die klas met die tweede meeste geld was die Graad 8E-klas en derde was die Graad 9E’s. Albei die klasse het geskenkpakke, geborg deur Buffalo Ridge Spur en Messina Apteek, ontvang. Klasse wat die Survivor-baan in die vinnigste tyd voltooi het, is die Graad 12L’s wat die eer het om hamburgers en koeldrank by Buffalo Ridge Spur te kan geniet. Die Graad 9E’s was tweede en die Graad 11W’s derde. Hulle kan elkeen ‘n melkskommel by die Spur gaan drink. From Monday until Friday (13 September), the South African National Parks (SANParks) will allow locals with valid identity documents an opportunity to spend a day at a national park of their choice, free of charge.

The campaign giving free access to the national parks will be applicable to all the national parks managed by SANParks, and these include the icon-ic Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage site situated 70 kilometres outside Musina and the Marakele National Park, which is situated in Thabazimbi.

According to the acting head of communications of SANParks, Mr Reynold Thakhuli, the objective of the week is to cultivate a culture of pride in all South Africans in their relationship with the coun-try’s natural, cultural and historical heritage, under the established theme Know Your National Parks.

The idea of a national parks focus week was conceived in 2006, after a realisation that the vast majority of South Africans were not accessing the national parks. “SANParks then embarked upon this campaign to encourage all South Africans, especially those from the communities around the parks, to share in what SANParks envisions to be the pride and joy of all South Africans and the world.”

The feature element of this campaign is the free access granted to all South African day visitors carrying their official identity documents. Persons

under the age of 16 will be allowed free access without the requirement of proof of identity. It should be noted that the free access to the parks will not include accommodation and any commer-cial activities in the park such as guided safaris in vehicles or guided walks, etc.

“Environmental education and protection are the responsibility of everyone, not just a privileged few. If we are to create a sense of ownership of the natural heritage of South Africa in all South Africans, then all South Africans must be able to have access to such,” said Thakhuli.

“We especially want our young people to take advantage of this opportunity because this heritage will be under their protection in the near future,” he added.

The annual SA National Parks Week has been made possible with support from First National Bank since its inception eight years ago. “Through this partnership, FNB is able to raise awareness on the importance of environmental education and the management of such issues,” says Danny Zandame-la, CEO FNB Public Sector Banking.

According to Thakhuli, SANParks encourages all South Africans, and especially teachers and school groups, to diarise these dates and plan a visit to a national park nearby.

“The survival of the South African national parks system and our natural and cultural heritage lies in the people of South Africa,” concludes Thakhuli.

Free access to national parks starts next week

Misdaad is ‘n realiteit waarmee alle Suid-Afrikaners, so ook in-woners van die Soutpansberg, byna daagliks te doen kry.

“Dit is dus belangrik om te weet hoe om op te tree wanneer jy die slagoffer van ‘n mis daad word, of op ‘n misdaadto neel af-kom,” sê mnr. Dirk Meissenhei-mer, voorsitter van die Soutpans-berg Dorpswag in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Meissenheimer sê daar is veral twee dinge wat in ag geneem moet word wanneer mens in ‘n misdaadsituasie beland, naamlik emosie (ongeduld, frustrasie, onvermoë, paniek, onverdraag-saamheid, kwaad, venyn en onwilligheid) en optrede (voort-varendheid, oorhaastige optrede en onoordeelkundige woorde).

“Kry ‘n beheerplan in plek voordat julle na toneel vertrek. Sorg dat julle ten minste twee

persone is wat ‘n toneel nader, stop voor of buite die hek en ontbied so spoedig moontlik die polisie,” sê Meissenheimer.

Wanneer daar op ‘n misdaad-toneel aangekom word, waarsku Meissenheimer dat daar nie halsoorkop in ‘n situasie ingestorm moet word nie. “Sper die gebied so vêr as moontlik af en laat iemand daar staan om besoekers en nuuskieriges weg te hou van die toneel, anders sal die toneel vernietig word. Moet niks aan-raak, optel, verwyder of verskuif nie. Laat die toneel net soos jy dit gekry het,” sê Meissenheimer. Hy sê dat dit die polisie se werk baie moeilik maak indien hulle ‘n toneel by burgerlikes oorneem wat deur ‘n samedromming van mense fyngetrap en gevat is. In die proses kan waardevolle bewyse soos voetspore en vinger-afdrukke verlore gaan.

“Sodra die polisie op die toneel aangekom het, verduidelik vinnig wat jy gevind het en die stappe wat jy geneem het om die toneel te beveilig. Staan dan af van die toneel af,” sê Meissenheimer. Hy waarsku inwoners om nie met die polisie se werk in te meng terwyl hulle met die toneel besig is nie. “Moet beslis nie vir hulle wil vertel hoe hulle hul werk moet doen nie,” sê hy.

Dit kan gebeur dat bewys-stukke ontdek word nadat die polisie hul ondersoek op die toneel afgehandel het. “ Dit is dan belangrik om so vinnig moontlik die ondersoekbeampte te skakel en te vra dat hulle asseblief die bewysstukke moet kom verskuif of verwyder.”

Spanne van vier kon inskryf. Elke lid van die span kry een-vir-een kans om ‘n bier te “down” en die leë blikkie onderstebo op sy kop te sit, voordat die volgende “atleet” sy blikkie mag oopmaak en drink. Die span waarvan al vier lede die vinnigste hul bier klaar drink, wen. Dié eer het die span van die Roadhogs Motorfietsklub van Gravelotte te beurt geval.

Jesus het ‘n gelykenis vertel van ‘n dwase man wat sy huis op sand

gebou het. Toe die stortreën val en die wind teen die huis waai, stort dit in. Die wyse man het sy huis op die rots gebou en was veilig die dag toe dit reën en die wind waai.

In die gelykenis van vandag leer Jesus ons iets wat ter harte geneem moet word. Die teks van vandag is ‘n verduideliking, vandaar die gelyke-nis. Wat die Skrif ons hier leer is dat dit nie genoeg is om te sê: “Ek glo in Jesus” nie. ‘n Mens kan ‘n papegaai leer om dit te sê en die woorde sal niks beteken nie.

‘n Christen is ‘n persoon wat nie net sê hy volg Jesus nie, maar gewil-lig Jesus se gebooie gehoorsaam. Dit is ‘n persoon wat nie net hoor nie, maar doen wat hy hoor. Iemand wat nie doen wat hy hoor nie is soos die dwaas wat sy huis op sand gebou het. Die ware Christen doen wat God sê omdat hy God liefhet. Wanneer moe-ilike tye kom sal sy geloof die toets slaag, want dit is ‘n lewende geloof. So ‘n persoon vind sy vreugde in God en nie in sonde nie.

Die ware gelowige offer tyd en geld op om Christus te verheerlik. Geloof wat niks kos nie, is ook niks werd nie.

Leser, is jou geloof ‘n lewende geloof wat die toets van die daag-likse lewe sal slaag sodat Christus verheerlik sal word? Is jou geloof in Christus so dat jy veilig sal wees in die oordeelsdag?

Senior burgers waardeer skenkingsDit was laat in 1942 in Kakamas langs die Oranjerivier, waar

ek grootgeword het (80km wes van Upington). In aanloop tot die 1943 verkiesing, het die politiek hoog geloop. Dit was Nat teen Sap.

Die regering van die dag was die Verenigde Party (Sappe), onder leiding van genl. J. C. (Jannie) Smuts. Hierdie party het bestaan uit die voormalige Suid-Afri-kaanse Party (SAP), wat saamge-smelt het met ‘n ander party (aan my bekend) en gevolglik ook die “Smelters” genoem is.

Intussen was die Tweede Wê reld oorlog natuurlik in volle swang en het Suid-Afrika aktief daarby betrokke geraak. Volgens wat die grootmense destyds gepraat het, was dit een van die Smuts-regering se growwe foute, omdat die gevoel was dat die oor-log ons glad nie moes geraak het nie. Verder het die regering, sonder inagneming van die effek op Suid-Afrikaners, baie kosgoedere na Engeland uitgevoer, wat erge tekor te plaaslik laat ontstaan het. Ons (as gesin) het genadiglik ons eie koring gehad, wat my pa by die meulhuis kon laat maal wanneer die meel min geword het, maar ek onthou hoe ek as kind in vrees geleef het (miskien ongegrond, maar ‘n kind se wêreld is anders), dat die regeringinspek-teurs ons voorraad koring in die buitekamer sou ontdek (ons brood wat moes hou tot die volgende oes van die land kom). ‘n Meelsif mag jy glad nie besit het nie, want fyn meel was so uit soos ‘n kers. Die growwe meel moes ongesif gebruik word, wat nie gebeur het nie, so my ma se sif was altyd baie sorgvuldig weggesteek.

Maar, om terug te keer na die politiek, die opposisie was die Nasionale Party (Natte), ‘n opkomende Afrikanerparty, bestaande uit mense wat toe-nemend ontevrede geraak het met die Smuts-regering se oorheer-sing en hul verwaarlosing van eie bodem, ten gunste van Engeland. Die leier was dr. D. F. Malan, ‘n ervare en gerespekteerde man wat deur sy mense vertrou is. Ons was nasio na liste en my ouers het ook aan die destydse Afri-kaner-weerstandsbeweging, die Ossewa Brandwag (OB), behoort, waarvoor die Smuts-manne nie veel ooghare gehad het nie. Die politiek was hewig en het nie net gemeenskappe nie, maar soms ook gesinne verdeel, sodat broer teen broer en pa teen seun te staan gekom het. Albei kante van die

spektrum het so sterk gevoel oor hul oortuigings dat dinge soms lelik geraak het.

As sesjarige het ek nie veel van die politiek verstaan nie, maar ek was baie lief vir sing. Dié gedeelte het ek verstaan. My ouer broers het toe woorde opgemaak op die wysie van “Daar kom die wa” en wanneer daar Sappe by ons aan huis gekom het, het ek die teken gekry en dan moes ek daar naby waar die grootmense op die stoep gesels het, deur die tuin loop en die lied sing, sodat dit mooi gehoor kon word.

Ek sing dit nog gereeld by geleenthede waar ‘n aantal seniors saam is, want dit gaan steeds goed af en dan sê ek maar altyd ek sing dit met groot apologie aan almal wat in 1942 aan die Verenigde Party behoort het, maar in 1942 het ek nie van apologie geweet nie. Die woorde gaan so:

Ou Jannie Smuts word sommer bang

Dat die roltenk hom sal vang,Want as die roltenk hom sal

Teen die agtergrond hierbo ge-skets, was dit vanselfsprekend dat die Natte in die 1943 verkiesing beter sou vaar as die vorige keer, maar die Smuts-regering het nie ‘n les geleer nie. Die oorlog het in 1945 tot ‘n einde gekom, maar die rantsoenering het voortgedu-ur. Vir ons daar op die platteland wat vir ons eie vleisie, tamatie, aartappel en brood gesorg het, het die tekorte nie so erg getref net, maar menige bejaarde sal vandag nog vertel hoe daar in stedelike gebiede in toue gestaan is om kosgoedere in die hande te probeer kry. In die volgende verkiesing, op 26 Mei 1948, het die tenk toe Oom Jannie “gevang” en moes hy terugstaan vir dr Malan. Die opposisie het regering geword en ‘n baie kort rukkie later was daar kos op die winkelrakke.

Dis jammer dat die Nasionale Party vandag uitgeskel word as die muishonde van die geskiedenis, want alles wat op 26 Mei 1948 begin het, was beslis nie sleg vir ons land nie.

Ons wil graag van die geleentheid gebruik maak om u te bedank dat u die afgelope jaar gereeld ‘n beriggie geplaas het van ons groot kuier op 24 Augustus – waarlik, dit was trane van blydskap om ou vriende weer te sien.

Ja, ons het almal ouer geword. Die manne spog met groot bleskop-

pe en die vroue het werklik gespog met hul kleinkinders.

Dit was vir my fantasties om te sien vanwaar oral in die land die oud-skoliere kontak gemaak het. Dit was wonderlik om weer te kon saam kuier ná al die jare. Net jammer ons het soveel van ons oud-onderwysers en vriende deur die jare verloor.

Nogmaals baie dankie vir julle vriendelik hulp. Dit word opreg waardeer.

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fi re that destroyed France’s white fl ag factory, effective-ly paralyzing the country’s military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Pos-turing.” Two more levels

remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”

The Germans have in-creased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.”

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excit-ed to see their new subma-rines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to “She’ll be right, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.” So far no situ-ation has ever warranted use of the last fi nal escalation level.

Laerskool Louis Trichardt het verlede Vrydag, vir die eerste keer in drie jaar, weer hul ge wil-de gholfdag aangebied by die Soutpansberg Gholfklub. Die formaat was ‘n vierbal-alliansie en die wenners was die seuns-en-pa span van Tobias en TG Fourie en Flippie en Pee-Jay Greyling met 43 punte. Saam met die wenspan is, van links na regs, die hoofborg Ronnie Visser (Vetko Oil), Flippie, Pee-Jay, TG en Tobias.

Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se O/19-meisieskrie-ketspan wen teen Southern Cross, met 10 paaltjies staande.

In die wedstryd wat op 31 Augustus op Tri-egies se velde plaasvind, wen Southern Cross die loot en besluit om eerste te kolf. Hulle teken

27 lopies (almal uit) in tien boulbeurte aan. Die meeste skade word gedoen deur Triegies se Talita Kloppers, wat drie paaltjies in twee boulbeurte vir die verlies van elf lopies plattrek. Nog boulers van Triegies wat elkeen twee paaltjies neem, is Richelle Lambert, Heidi-Lene Jonck en Amorien Venter.

Hoërskool Louis Tri-chardt teken die wen-lopies aan in die vierde boulbeurt sonder die verlies van ‘n paalt-jie. Die lopiemakers was Richelle Lambert (18 n.u.n.) en Talita (6 n.u.n.). Talita word ook aangewys as speler van die wedstryd.

Die span en afrig-ters sê baie dankie vir die borge, mnr. Stan-ley Thompson van Thompson Motors vir die hemde, mnr. Lucas Vermeulen van LCV vir die borduurwerk op die hemde, asook Madi Gra Water vir die ys.

Duiwe klok vinnigste tye die siesoenDuiweboere van die Sout-pansberg Posduifklub het die afgelope naweek hulle vinnigste wentye nog hierdie seisoen geklok in onderskeidelik ‘n twee-jaar-oue mannetjie- en wyfiewedvlug vanaf Vryburg oor ‘n afstand van 680km.

Die mannetjiewedvlug word gewen deur Elize & Tim, nadat hul wenduif die afstand voltooi met ‘n spoed van 1 627.31 meter

per minuut. Hulle was ook 7de en 10de. Marx Hokkie was 2de, 11de en 16de, Tiny de Klerk 3de, 8ste en 9de, Hando & Zack Fourie 4de, 5de en 6de, Louis Gossman 12de, 14de en 15de en Danie Lourens 13de, 17de en 18de. Die wyfiewedvlug word ingepalm deur Marx Hokke, met hul wenduif wat die af-stand voltooi met ‘n spoed van 1 649.79 meter per minuut. Hulle

was ook 7de en 11de. Danie was 2de, 3de en 10de, Louis 4de, 9de en 17de, Elize & Tim 5de, 12de en 13de, Tiny 6de, 8ste en 18de en Hando & Zack Fourie 14de, 15de en 16de.

Dié wedvlugte was ook die laaste van die twee-jaar-oue kampioenskapwedvlugte, met Tiny wat die mannetjie-kampio-en oplewer en Marx Hokkie wat die wyfie-kampioen titel inpalm.

Mieke Laubser (links) en Dominique Nel is twee jong Vlak 4-gimnaste van Makhado (Louis Trichardt) wat in die ouderdomsgroep 10 jaar en jonger op 23 en 24 Augustus by die Gauteng gimnastiekkompetisie in El do raigne, Pretoria, deelgeneem het. Dominique het algeheel vierde in haar vlak en ouderdomsgroep geëindig en Mieke vyfde. Albei verwerf Limpopo-kleure en sal aan die SA Spele vanaf 23 tot 25 September deelneem. Foto verskaf.

AC Geldenhuys, O/16-rugbyspeler van Hoër-skool Louis Trichardt, ontvang ´n balkie vir rugby tydens die skool se tussentydse toekenningsgeleentheid.

Twee veteraan fiets-ry ers van die P&L Fiets ryklub in Mak ha-do (Louis Tri chardt) het deelgeneem aan die 2013 UCI Mees-ter Wêreld kam pi oen-skappe in Pieterma-ritz burg op 24 Augus-tus en beïndruk met h u l a l g e h e l e t y e . Dr. Casper Venter (mans tussen 45 en 49) se algehele tyd was 01:50:36. Johan van Dijkhorst (mans tussen 50 en 54) se tyd was 01:55:00. Links staan Casper en regs is Johan. Foto verskaf.

Lede van die P&L Fietsryklub in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) het die klub se naam hoog gehou in verskeie fietsryuitda-gings die afgelope twee weke.

Op 24 Augustus het twee van die klub se gesoute bergfietsry-ers, dr. Casper Venter en Johan van Dijkhorst, aan die 2013 UCI Masters World Championship in

Pietermaritzburg gaan deelneem. Venter, wat in die 45 tot 49 ou-derdomskategorie deelgeneem het, het ‘n 28ste plek. Sy vin behaal in ‘n tyd van 01:50:36. Van Dijkhorst het in sy kategorie, 50 tot 54 jaar, klaar gemaak in ‘n tyd van 01:55:00.

In die Lentetrap Bergfiets-wedren, wat die afgelope naweek

in Polokwane aangebied is, het Nico Geldenhuys tweede geëindig in die 70km resies in ‘n tyd van 2:58:20, terwyl Sarel Lubbe sesde klaargemaak het in ‘n tyd van 3:13:48. In die 50km wedren het Stanley Thompson vierde klaargemaak in 2:20:39, terwyl Johan van Dijkhorst sesde geëindig het in 2:23:59 en Jandré
