Gerhard Klopper (medeeienaar).

Limpopo Vet Shop and Animal Feeds het ook ‘n perdeafdeling. Katkos en hondekos is daar verkrygbaar, soos Vet’s Choice, Hills, Lifestyle en Royal Canin. Verskillende entstowwe kan ook daar aangekoop word. Alle dierebenodigdhede is by die winkel verkrygbaar.

Drs. By Limpopo Vet Shop and Animal Feeds is die bekende gesigte van me. Minnie is reeds 19

The SABC interviewed Mr Robert Khoza, chairperson of the Hlanganani Concerned Group, after the meeting where it was resolved to take the name change of Louis Trichardt to Makhado on review to court. A few of the group’s members stand with him. From left are Mr GJ Hlangwane, Mr Robert Khoza, Ms Eaglet Mayimele (treasurer) and Mr Donald Mlati.

The fight to decide what the town’s name will be in the foreseeable future is once again heading for the court rooms.

Following the second name change of the town Louis Trichardt to Makhado, the Chairpersons Association (CA) received a unanimous vote from its members to take the decision of the Minister of Arts and Culture on review to court.

At the CA meeting on June 6 in the church hall of the Soutpansberg Dutch Reformed Church, members of the large contingent of the Hlanganani Concerned Group were very vocal in their rejection of the procedures that were followed prior to the name change. Mr Donald Mlati said that, at the time, they had persuaded the Shangaans not to set alight the bus that the Makhado Municipality had used to transport people from outside to Waterval to “vote for the name change.”

Mr Robert Khoza, Hlanganani chairperson, said in an interview after the meeting that the name change had been forced down their throats.

Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile was satisfied that “according to documents submitted all consultative processes were followed and all points of view that emerged during consultation and Council meetings were also reflected and submitted…” as stated by his letter of dismissal of objections dated 10 May 2012.

Both the name change and the Minister’s dismissal of the CA’s objections will be taken to court on review. Minister Mashatile gazetted the name change on 14 October last year. The CA will first take the matters on review to the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria and, if necessary, to the Appeal Court or even the Constitutional Court.

The purpose of the CA and its appointed attorneys and advocate, Adv Denny du Preez, is to have the name change set aside. In the first round of the name change from Louis Trichardt to Makhado,

the struggle started in 2003 and the name change was set aside by a panel of Appeal Court judges in 2007, whereafter the Makhado Municipality restarted the process. Part of the CA resolution states that the meeting has mandated the CA Exco to cite as respondents any applicable organ of state, including the Makhado Municipality, the Regional Geographical Names Council as well as the National Geographical Names Council.

The appointed attorneys and advocate will work on a contingency basis, and if they succeed in their case, they will recover their costs from any of the respondents against whom the court may make a decision to pay the costs.

The previous name change case cost the State approximately R500 000 in taxed costs. The members of the general meeting of the CA understood

that “if their legal team is not successful in the review application, the court may make a cost order against the CA and that they will be responsible for payment of the costs of the successful respondent as may be made by court order if applicable”. The CA’s secretary, Ms Inga Gilfillan, said that the con

stitution of the CA limited financial responsibility in such a case to R1 per member. The CA directly and indirectly represents about 90 0000 members. Gilfillan said that they already had donations pledged if necessary.

The CA Chairperson, Mr André Naudé, said that he was not surprised by the unanimous decision of the general meeting to take the matter to court on review. “People are definitely more interested this time round. We had 2 000 more signatures on our petition lists. At the meeting, the synergy between cultural groups was demonstrated,” Naudé said.

Nearly half of the attendees came from the Shangaan cultural group. Naudé said that some of the large organisations in town sent mainly their chairpersons to represent them.

verbind, was lank toegemaak.

Bennie Smith, Joey se man, Dinsdag gesê.

Die tweede ondersoek is geopen nadat ‘n me. ‘n Vuurwapen is langs haar gevind.

A water leak in Makhado’s Mimosa Street gushed out water so fast that, even with the water supply interrupted for the greater part of the day, it dammed up in a driveway and ran down two street blocks.

Neighbours came out to watch precious water flowing away. Ms Yolandi Smit said that the leak started in front of their house, opposite Loerie Park, on 26 May. It was painful for them to see water wasted while there was no water in their taps or tanks and their garden having dried up. In addition, they had to steer their vehicles through the river in their gateway. The fact that the water supply in that part of the town is interrupted for many hours daily made it possible for them to gain access to their premises.

Smit’s motherin law, Ms Ellie Venter, started phoning the Makhado Municipality on Monday, 28 May. She resides on the same premises. “I phoned many times over the next 10 days, but stopped because I have to pay for all the calls,” Venter said. By that time, the water was running down Mimosa Street, around the corner and into Koedoe Street.

Passersby stared in amazement. Mr Ampie Meintjies from Loeriepark and Mr Samuel Tshifhango, a neighbour from 30 Mimosa Street, stood looking at the water still gushing out on 8 June. “I wanted to go fishing,” Tshifhango joked.

It was Tshifhango’s turn more than two weeks ago, with a burst pipe on the pavement of his residence.

“The municipality eventually did come out. They said the pipe had burst because of tree roots. They opened it up and left, saying they would first have to buy pipes and materials. They usually came back at night to work,” Tshifhango said. This hole was left open, with the soil dumped into the street itself,

partly obscuring it. Venter reported that the major leak was repaired

late on 8 June. She said that the water had stopped running into their premises.

The municipal spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, said that the leak in Mimosa Street had been caused by a mainline pipe burst. “It took some days [to fix] because we were still waiting for some parts,” Bobodi said on Tuesday and promised that the hole would be fixed in one day’s time.

Hier is mnr. Me. Uys hou ’n stoomaangedrewe sportmotor vas.

hom geskenk.

South African and Zimbab-wean officials operating at the Beit Bridge border post embarked on a massive joint clean-up campaign along the Limpopo River two weeks ago.

The fivehour programme, dubbed the TwoCountries Cleanup Campaign, coincided with the World Environment Day commemorations. The exercise was spearheaded and coordinated by the two countries’ port health departments operating at the border post.

The South African port health coordinator at Beit Bridge, Mr David Ramuthiugi, said the cleanup exercise was aimed at raising awareness with travellers and border officials on solidwaste management and disposal along the border post.

“We conducted the exercise with various stakeholders from Zimbabwe and South Africa

to conscientise travellers on the need to keep our environment clean, particularly when it comes to solidwaste disposal. The Beit Bridge border post is the shop window to both Zimbabwe and South Africa. We should keep it clean all the times, so that we are able to attract more visitors and international tourists to our countries,” he said.

Speaking during the exercise, Zimbabwe’s district environmental officer for Beit Bridge, Mr Notho Dube, said the cleanup was in line with the International Health Regulation (IHR) requirement of 2005, of which Zimbabwe and South Africa are signatories. “We embarked on the joint campaign involving various key stakeholders operating at the border post on both the Zimbabwean and South African side. As regulatory authorities, we have a mandate

to ensure that our ports of entry are kept clean and we noted that Beit Bridge needed to be spruced up,” he added.

Dube said they intended to conduct similar exercises quarterly.

Other stakeholders who participated in the cleanup campaign included the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) and South African Revenue Service (SARS) officials, immigration officers from the two countries, New Limpopo Bridge (NLB) company employees, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and agriculture inspectors from Zimbabwe and South Africa.

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA), Zimbabwe Prisons Service officers, Beit Bridge Town Council and Musina Municipality workers also participated in the campaign.

Hy neem oor by me.

New M-Class launched

Mercedes’ latest generation M-Class can go for 1 500 kilometres between refillsMercedes-Benz have launched their third-generation M-Class SUVs with permanent all-wheel drive.

Not only does the MClass deliver exceptional safety and wellbalanced ride comfort, but excellent driving dynamics, both on and off the road, as well. What’s more, this new MClass features an array of new chassis developments and innovative dynamic handling control systems which further enhance both driving enjoyment and handling safety. A characteristic body design and a variable interior add to the richness of the driving experience in the new MClass.

The new MercedesBenz MClass scores particularly high on energy efficiency, with the new model range consuming between 23% and 28% less fuel than the outgoing models.

One outstanding model is the new ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC, which boasts an NEDC consumption of just 6.5litres per /100 km and has a range of up to 1 500km on a full tank. The 4cylinder engine kicks out 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque.

Other models include the ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC V6, the ML 350 4MATIC V6 petrol engine, the ML 500 with the new

V8 direct injection engine and the topofthe range model for the MClass, the classleading ML 63 AMG, fitted with the V8 engine that provides 386kW of power and 700Nm of torque.

Even the standard version of the new MClass offers a high level of comfort, dynamic onroad handling and outstanding offroad capabilities. For the first time, the MClass chassis with steel suspension features selective damping. The driver is assisted by electric steering, which ensures the optimum level of steering assistance for the current driving situation.

For driving off the beaten track, all models are equipped with extensive offroad features as standard, including 4MATIC permanent allwheel drive, 4ETS electronic traction control and an offroad button which activates a special offroad driving mode. Furthermore, the startoff assist system makes hill starts easier, while the Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) automatically keeps the M Class at the speed set, using the cruise control stalk.

The new MClass represents the embodiment of the MercedesBenz holistic safety concept of REAL LIFE SAFETY, which is derived primarily from what hap

pens in a real accident situation. The extremely robust occupant compartment of the MClass, together with the front and rear deformation zones, forms an effective basis for the occupant protection system. Up to nine airbags, activated on demand

in accordance with the accident type and accident severity, can reduce the loads exerted on the occupants, in addition to active safety systems, such as the standardfit Brake Assist (BAS) or the optional BAS PLUS, which can help to prevent an accident or

reduce the severity of an accident. As with all MercedesBenz

passenger cars, the MClass range comes standard with a MobiloDrive maintenance plan of 6 years or 120 000 km, with prices ranging from R683 500 for the ML 250 BlueTEC 4Matic

model to R1 380 000 for the ML 63 AMG.

Chev Utility

No it’s not a Corsa bakkie - yet it is one

By all accounts, the new Chevrolet Utility looks to have lost none of its inherent qualities and, with its sleek design, will appeal to a wide market. (Photo: www.quickpic.co.za)

They say a change is as good as a holiday, and this is certainly true of the ever-popular Chev Utility, better known as the Corsa bakkie.

According to Imperial GM sales manager Martie Venter in Makhado, the recently modernised Corsa still remains the top seller in its class.

Chevrolet and Isuzu received gold recognition at the annual IPSOS Awards, hosted for the past eight years and seen as setting the benchmark in customer experience in the automotive industry.

Recognition is given to the outstanding achievers in four categories, namely purchase and service experience in passenger vehicles and purchase and service experience in light commercial vehicles. Both Chev and Isuzu

received outstanding percentages in all four categories.

Since the first two generations of GM’s light pickup truck, the new thirdgeneration Chevrolet Utility Base is still not afraid to roll up its sleeves. Last year, GM decided to drop the Corsa moniker and refer to the bakkie as the Chevrolet Utility.

The new Utility is available in three different models, namely Base, Club and Sport. Standard equipment includes colourcoded bumpers, heightadjustable steering column and driver’s seat, driver and passenger airbags, as well as an immobiliser, while aircondition is an option.

Two petrol engines are available and have been carried over largely unchanged from the outgoing model. The 1.4litre,

8valve engine delivers 68kW of power at 6 000rpm and 120Nm of torque at 3 200rpm, requiring an average of 7.2litres of premium unleaded per 100km.

The slightly largercapacity 1.8litre engine is good for 77kW of power at 5 400rpm and 161Nm of torque at 3 000 rpm, with an average thirst of 8.1 litres per 100km. By all accounts, the new Chevrolet Utility looks to have lost none of its inherent qualities and, with its sleek design, will appeal to a wide market. For a limited time only, clients will receive a free canopy when they purchase the Utility 1.4 (without aircon) or the 1.8 (with aircon).

To avoid disappointment, phone one of Makhado GM’s friendly sales consultants at 015 516 0239.

“South Africa is one of the most important future markets for Husqvarna Motorcycles, having CMH as a partner is a great opportunity for us to develop and expand the Husqvarna network giving our customers premium support and service,” declared Max Kalbfell, sales manager of Husqvarna Motorcycles.

Rob Holder, general manager of BWM Motorrad SA has supported the agreement between Husqvarna and CMH and is quoted: “I am confident that the Husqvarna brand will make a substantial impact in the South

African motorcycle market and wish Husqvarna Motorcycles every success for the future.” Fred Fensham, general manager of CMH Marine and Leisure is enthusiastic about the agreement signed: “The excitement of expanding our leisure division with such a quality brand is huge for us, and will compliment and endorse our current business. With this link to the leisure market in SA, and an understanding of the trends, dealer network and support structure required to launch and grow the Husqvarna Motorcycle brand in SA, the future growth and establishment of the brand is very exciting.”

The launch date has been set for 26 July and will include a full roll out of a new and high profile dealer network covering all the major centres in South Africa. (Article and photo: www.quickpic.co.za

The Zoutpansberger’s website (www.zout-pansberger.co.za) offers rea ders a calendar entry service on their Events Page.

Visitors to the website can now list their calendar entries for upcoming events on the Events Page themselves. It is as easy as merely logging in on the Events Page through your existing Google, Facebook or Twitter accounts and uploading your entry. The entry will, however, not appear immediately as it has to go through a moderation process first.

In addition, sport club administrators (and

for that matter church and school administra-tors) can contact us to directly submit events on the Events Page without a moderations process. If an administrator is listed as a user on the site, their calendar entries will show im-mediately. This function allows administrators to update events through the year on a platform used by ten others publications throughout the province as part of both a local and provincial calendar.

Eye in the sky to stop rhino poachingThe patrolling of the two-mil-lion-hectare Kruger National Park (KNP) against rhino poachers received a boost last Tuesday when an ultra-light Bantam Aircraft was presented to the park during a ceremony at the Shingwedzi Aircraft Hanger.

The R1,4 million aircraft, as well as night vision equipment, was donated on behalf of the park’s ranger corps by the SANParks Honorary Rangers.

According to the managing executive of the KNP, Mr Abe Sibiya, the Bantam and other equipment will considerably enhance the effectiveness of the ranger corps “by providing them with tools to patrol over larger areas.” He said that with

the budget constraints affecting everybody globally, the Bantam would complement the other aircraft already in use.

He added that the park’s antipoaching teams could no longer patrol on foot, bicycle, motorbike or in a vehicle only and that they must be able to conduct aerial patrols “armed with sophisticated field equipment.”

Sibiya added that in the first five months of this year alone, rhino poached in South Africa had already exceeded 235. He mentioned that it was no secret that the fight against poaching “is ever present and continues today with an intensity that has never been seen before.”

He said the rangers continued to find wellequipped poachers

who aimed to capitalise illegally on the park’s natural heritage. “I therefore would like to encourage all the citizens of the country to rally behind the park’s rangers as the eyes and ears of the world are on us.”

Apart from the Bantam aircraft and equipment, the honorary rangers also contributed to the operational cost of the Bantam to the value of R100 000. The equipment includes torches, night vision goggles, thermal binoculars and scope mounts, which will all be used during patrols and other vital antipoaching work. Sibiya praised the honorary rangers for their determination to continue to make a difference as far as antipoaching is concerned.

Photographed at the Bantam aircraft are, from left to right, Messrs Ben van Eeden (Regional General Manager: Nxanatsene Area), Marius Rencke (Shingwedzi Section Ranger) and Abe Sibiya (KNP Managing Executive).

Nothing left and 22km still to go ... With just over 150km behind them at the end of stage three at Schoemansdal, many cyclist could no longer hide their sheer exhaustion.

Pretty and tough ... The women’s race was a one-woman affair, with An-Li Pretorius from team MTN-Qhubeka snatching victory in all four stages and finishing as overall women’s winner in a combined time of 05:20:39.

P&L cyclist Cassie Mattheus was also running on empty by the time he reached Schoemansdal at the end of stage three of the 175km main event.

It was still all smiles for the more than 1000 riders at the beginning of the second stage of the 175km race at Waterpoort. The number of smiles later disappeared as each of the four stages took more and more out of riders.

kinders Hom vertrou.

Brief

Hierdie humor is godslasterlik

opgeruim. Vroeg Woensdagoggend was

gesin so van toepassing soos verlede Donderdag.

“They walked the extra mile for me”

I have always believed that good service should be highlighted

and made public as we are so used to getting poor service.

Recently, I had an overheating problem with my little Hyundai Atos.

With the help of Messrs Amed Karim (owner), Deon de Jager (workshop manager), Riaan Schlebusch (service adviser) and Willie Horn (mechanic) of Hyundai in Makhado, the car was fixed under

warranty and returned to me in good working order.

As there was a problem with the warranty, the trouble that these gentlemen went to to have the claim approved is really appreciated.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to these four gentlemen and I will certainly do business with Hyundai Makhado when I need to buy another car.

Cycle Centre verdien ‘n pluimpie

Verlede week het ‘n paar hoërskoolseuns by my DVDwinkel

Well - I didn’t know that

How many of you know the etymology of the most com-mon equivalent of ‘manure’?

In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship. This was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers, so large shipments of manure were quite common on the high seas.

It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet. But once water (at sea) hit it in the lower sections of the hold, not only did it become heavier, but the process of fermenta-tion began again, of which a by-product is methane gas, of course.

As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below deck and the first time someone came

below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!

Several ships were de-stroyed in this manner before the cause of the problem was determined.

After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction: ‘Stow high in transit’ on them, which meant for the sailors to stow this cargo high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch the volatile material and start the production of methane.

Thus evolved the term ‘S.H.I.T.’, (Stow High In Tran-sit) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.

You probably did not know the true history of this word.

Neither did I.

I had always thought it was a golfing term.

(Contd from P24)With the wind now almost at

their backs, stage three from Waterpoort to Schoemansdal took place at a blistering pace. The gruelling uphill stage finish at Schoemansdal saw the top riders having to push hard at the end, with Maree securing his second stage win and Smit once again in second place and Kachelhoffer again in third place.

At the start of the final 22km stage back to Makhado, the only thing that stood between the riders and the finishing line was the 4km climb at Otto’s Hoogte. From there it was a downhill sprint to the finish. This time round, Kachelhoffer was just too strong, finishing first, followed by Julius Corbet in second place and Maree third.

Maree’s two stage wins were enough for him to be crowned overall winner in a combined time of 04:23:48. Kachelhoffer was second overall in 04:23:52, with Willie Smit a mere second later in overall third place in 04:23:53.

The women’s race was a onewoman affair, with AnLi Pret o r i u s f r o m t e a m MTNQhubeka snatching victory in all four stages from defending champion and Kremetart Brand Ambassador Anriette Schoe man. Schoeman, riding for Mecer NMMU, this year only managed four secondplace finishes in each of the stages. With four stage wins under her belt, Pretorius was crowned overall

women’s winner in a combined time of 05:20:39, with Schoeman in second position overall in a combined time of 05:20:43 and Cycle Lab Toyota’s Lynette Burger third in a time of 05:21:19.

The 70km race was dominated by local riders, with members of the P&L Cycling Club taking first, second and third position in the men’s race. CP van Wyk cy

cled home in a time of 02:03:10, with haun Constable in second place in 02:05:02 and Marco Roets third in 02:10:44. The 70km women’s race was clinched by Leandri Jansen van Rensburg (Cycle Lab Super Cycling) in 02:17:18, with Alison Lailvaux second in 02:33:56 and Vanessa Record (Jakaranda Cycling Club) third in 02:43:33.

Early on Monday morning (18th), a local doctor will embark on a quest to cycle 2 300 km across South Africa, starting at Pietermaritzburg and ending in Wellington in the Western Cape. His chal-lenge will be more than just a physical and mental race against time and the elements; it will also be a challenge to collect money for a local can-cer charity.

Dr Casper Venter is one of the roughly 50 mountainbikers who entered for this year’s gruelling Freedom Challenge. The Freedom Challenge is considered to be one of the world’s toughest endurance events, where competitors have to find their way through valleys, cross rivers and conquer several mountains to eventually finish in the Boland, some 2 300 kilometres later. No modern navigation equipment such as handheld GPS devices are allowed and they only have maps to help find their way from one overnight point to another. They also have only 26 days in which to finish the route to claim

the coveted Basotho blanket handed to all competitors who manage to finish this race.

The overnight points are roughly 100 kilometres apart and riders try and reach these before nightfall. Prior to the race, riders must pack all their extra clothes, spares, food supplements and even medication in 20 twolitre ice cream containers. These containers are then sent ahead and placed at some of the overnight stations. The riders need to carry whatever else they need on their backs or attach it to the bikes. The recordholder is Alex Harris, who finished the race in 12 days and 15 hours.

Dr Casper Venter has been preparing for the challenge for many months now. He is especially worried about the weather conditions the riders are about to encounter on the route. Last week, snow started falling in the mountainous areas and the temperature dropped to 12º Celsius at places. He has no fewer than four pairs of gloves to help protect him against the cold.

During this challenge, Dr

Venter is trying to collect more than R100 000 for a local cancer charity, the Makhado Care Group. Several businesses and individuals have already agreed to sponsor him for every kilometre he completes. “This will motivate me and help me to carry on and reach the finish line,” said Casper last week.

The Zoutpansberger has also created a web page where readers can follow his progress. The address is www.zoutpansberger.co.za/node/freedomchallenge, or simply follow the link from the Home Page. The page has a map that will indicate his latest position tracked. All riders have a Netstar tracking device that transmits coordinates at certain intervals. Dr Venter will also upload pictures and comments, which will be displayed here. Alternatively, readers can visit his blog site at www.freedomchallenge2012.com.

Individuals or businesses who want to sponsor him can contact members of the Makhado Care Group or call him at (015) 516 4871.

Kremetart 2012

The past weekend saw some 2 000 cyclists decent on Makhado for participation in the 22nd annual PPC Kremetart Cycle races. Right: David Maree, overall winner of this year’s PPC Kremetart 175km stage race.

Maree races to victory

The past weekend saw some 2 000 cyclists descend on Makha-do for participation in the 22nd annual PPC Kremetart Cycle races.

For many it was an epic ride, which saw earlymorning smiles disappear as each of the four stages of the 175km main event took more and more out of riders. A chilly and strong side wind in the Waterpoort/Vivo stage also

did not make it easier for riders, and by lunchtime, many were already minutes off their pace compared to previous years.

Saturday’s strong wind did not, however, deter the top names and teams in South African cycling, with team Tasol GT putting in a strong performance to take three of the four stages in the senior men’s race. Tasol GT’s David Maree clinched the yellow jersey in the first 53km stage from Makhado to Waterpoort,

with Willie Smith from team Toyota CSA cycling home in second place and Hanco Kachellhoffer (Tasol GT) in third place. Team Tasol also did well to secure teammate Nolan Hoffman a stage win in the relatively flat WaterpoorttoVivo stage. It was between him and team Bonitas’s Johan Rabie at the sprint to the finish, with Rabie finishing second and Maree clinching third place.
