Murder or self-defence?Rescue workers stand close to the body of the 33-year-old Justice Mulaudzi, who was shot dead last Wednesday by police constables.

Was it murder or self-defence? This is what the police now have to determine through their in-vestigation into a fatal shooting incident involv-ing two female police constables in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) last Wednesday afternoon.

The 33-year-old Mr Justice Mulaudzi died in-stantly when he was shot in the head, following an altercation with the two constables near the railway crossing in Grobler Street.

Immediately following the incident, Makhado

police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike confi rmed that the police had opened an inquest docket re-garding the fatal shooting. It would, however, now seem that there could be more to the rumours that Mulaudzi’s shooting was unjustifi ed, after it was confi rmed by the Independent Police Investiga-tive Directorate (IDIP) on Tuesday that the police are no longer conducting an inquest but possibly investigating a case of murder.

Mulaudzi had run-ins with the law on several previous occasions. Over a period of six years, he went by fi ve different aliases, even spending time

behind bars under one of his aliases. From 2006 until 2009, he was convicted fi ve times on theft charges. His latest convictions were in 2011 and 2012, when he was found guilty of housebreaking and trespassing respectively. At the time of his death, he was standing trial on yet another house-breaking charge.

According to the police, the two female con-stables were on routine patrol when they spotted Mulaudzi and noticed that he seemed to be under the infl uence of alcohol. They stopped and tried to question him about it. Mulaudzi allegedly refused

to be questioned and, when ordered into the back of the patrol vehicle, he lost his temper and became aggressive. He then allegedly snatched one of the constables’ service pistol and threatened to shoot them with it.

Sadike said the constables immediately retaliated and tackled Mulaudzi to try and regain control of the weapon. In the process, two shots went off, hit-ting Mulaudzi in the head and killing him instantly. Neither of the police constables was injured.

New business or service?By Isabel Venter

Jacques Kilian has recently moved his business, Stone Craft Granite, to his own premises situated at 4 Byles Street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Kilian has been in the granite business for the past seven years, and during this time he accumulated not only know-ledge and expertise in the busi-ness, but also made his mark as a very competent craftsman.

Kilian honed his skills by working on some of the biggest projects in town. His speciality is the manufacturing and instal-lation of granite table tops.

Stone Craft’s knowledge and expertise of the granite industry allows them not only to help private clients with the design aspects and functional-ity of their work surfaces, but also to handle other building projects.

Products that he offers in-clude kitchen installations, bar counters, vanity surfaces and shop fittings, such as a public reception area.

Additionally, Stone Craft now also offers granite tiles and tombstones (engraving and installation).

For more information, Stone Craft can be contacted during office hours on 015 516 0993 or 084 695 9672.

In an unexpected move, the Hawks in Limpopo arrested a well-known senior Thulamela traffic official on Monday.

The Traffic Manager: Law Enforcement of the Thulamela Municipality, Thilivhali Mu-laudzi (48), appeared in court on the same day. His case was postponed to the following day for a bail application.

According to information sup-plied by the police, Mulaudzi, who is stationed at the Thulamela Municipality’s headquarters in Thohoyandou, is facing charges of fraud. Limpopo provincial po-lice spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said the accused was linked to 1 640 charges of fraud. He is facing 820 cases of issuing fraudulent driver’s licences and a further 820 cases of contravening the National Traffic Act.

According to Brig Mulaudzi, the arrest comes after a lengthy police investigation, which start-ed in 2002. He said the arrest came with a recommendation from the Office of the Auditor General.

A bail application scheduled to take place on Tuesday could not proceed because the investigating officer was not present in court and was said to be in Pretoria, attending to another matter. The court in which the accused ap-peared was filled to capacity, with some people having to follow the proceedings from outside.

Inside were members of the Thulamela Municipality’s traffic section, who came in their num-

bers to support their boss. Mu-laudzi stood silently and calmly. Wearing his trademark dark sunglasses, a fancy shirt and a pullover, Mulaudzi was informed as to why the application should be postponed to Wednesday (1 August).

The Head of the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) in the province, Maj Gen Dibero Molatjana, said the arrest signalled the police’s inten-

tion to leave no stone unturned in rooting out corrupt officials. “We are not concerned with a person’s position or the amount of power he or she holds in office. No one is above the law and the Hawks’ claws are out for all corrupt per-sons,” said Molatjana.

He applauded the Hawks for the thorough investigation they had to conduct before nabbing the suspect.

(Contd from P1)On the other hand, rumour has

it that Mulaudzi was shot without provocation. Some allege that Malaudzi was walking with a friend when the constables pulled up alongside of them. One of the constables then apparently got out of the vehicle, cocked her service pistol, hit Mulaudzi over

the head and then ordered him to get into the back of the police vehicle. When he refused to do so, he was apparently shot.

Both police constables’ service pistols were taken and hand ed in for ballistic testing to determine who had fired the fatal shot. Sa-dike also confirmed on Tuesday that both constables are still on

active duty.In the meantime, the outcome

of Mulaudzi’s post mortem is awaited.

“Based on the outcome of the post mortem, we will take further action,” said IPID spokesperson Mr Moses Dlamini. The IPID is a watchdog organisation for the SAPS.

Farmers fed-up with produce thievesTwo suspected avocado thieves’ luck ran out when they were allegedly caught red-handed by farmers and community members from the Witvlag-area.

A disheartened group of community members gathered outside the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court in Makhado last Friday to show their dismay with the non-stop theft of the fresh produce that constitutes their livelihood.

Tshikonye Mudau (54) and Avhapfani Philimon Simali (34) were arrested in June when they allegedly tried to steal a bakkie load of avocados to the value of R20 000. Ac-cording to information provided, the men were caught red-handed, picking and loading the avos onto their vehicle.

It was when they allegedly tried to flee the scene that they drove into a ditch with their vehicle and were arrested.

The two men’s arrest was welcomed, especially by the emerging community farmers, who are most-ly pensioners. According to them, they have not been able to harvest a crop for the past five years.

“We want thieves to receive the maximum sen-tence. Our children do not want to farm because they see no future in it for them.

We are tired of these thieves and want it to be-come a priority crime,” was the message from these farmers outside the court on Friday.

In the meantime, Mu-dau and Simali, who were charged with theft, have applied for a legal

aid attorney. They will appear in the Louis Trichardt Magis-

trate’s Court again on Friday, 3 August, for their application to be finalized. Mudau has also laid a counter-charge against one of the farmers who as-sisted in his arrest. Mudau claims that the farmer had assaulted him.

It was ‘hands down’ for a DA councillor when he wanted to give input on Makhado’s (Louis Trichardt) current water crisis.

DA councillor Brian du Plooy was not pleased when he was told to put his hand down when he raised it at the question and input time at the water crisis meeting of 18 July. The open meeting at the local show hall was called by the mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi.

“My privileges as a ward councillor were taken away – I needed to give positive input that the Louis Trichardt com-munity could have benefited from,” said Cllr Du Plooy.

Du Plooy, the ward councillor of Ward 21, sat in the audience at first but was then called by the programme director, Cllr Mildred Sinyosi, to sit in front with the municipal committee. While seated in the front, Cllr Du Plooy was told to take down his raised hand because “you are

not here to ask questions”. This was after Cllr Sinyosi indicated that it was a time to ask ques-tions, make suggestions and give input.

In response to a question as to why Cllr Du Plooy was told to put down his hand, the Makhado Municipality replied by saying that Cllr Du Plooy was an EXCO member who should speak collectively with the EXCO.

“… he was supposed to be seated in the front with the mayor and other councillors. Thereby he could contribute collectively with other council-lors in trying to make inputs on the position of the municipal-ity to come up with solutions on resolving the water crisis,” municipal spokesperson Louis Bobodi answered on Tuesday.

In the meantime, Cllr Du Plooy said that he had wanted to say that the current water shortage would not be solved until the refurbished Albasini pipeline was connected to the

new pipeline from Nandoni to Valdezia.

Du Plooy also wanted to pro-pose at the meeting that, in the interim, “qualified contractors with expertise be appointed to attend to the water breakdowns immediately.” Du Plooy said that at this stage it takes the Vhembe District Municipality 48 to 72 hours before a con-tractor is appointed. “VDM does not have its own capable officials with the necessary knowledge and expertise to solve the problems themselves,” Du Plooy said.

Another short-term solution would be to equip additional existing boreholes and drill new boreholes.

“We have already identified the location of the existing boreholes that need equipment, as well as the areas where new boreholes can be drilled, to VDM officials. These officials seemed to have disappeared from the earth, with no feedback at all,” Du Plooy said.

DA Cllr Brian du Plooy (right) was not pleased when he was told to put his hand down when he raised it at the question and input time at the water crisis meeting of 18 July. The open meeting at the show hall was called by the mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi (left).

Be las ting betalers-vereniging (SBBV) se eiendom-spesialis, me. Jana Smith.

Me.

The organisers of the annual Makhado Show, Makoya Multi Media, came under severe criticism in the days following this year’s show, especially with regard to the deafening noise emanating from the show grounds until the early hours of Sunday morning.

“We apologise to the com-munity for keeping them up through the night, as well as the Indian community busy with Ramadan,” said Ms Thato Led-waba of Makoya Multi Media on Wednesday.

Although it might mean little to those people who where kept awake, Ledwaba did try and explain what happened.

“Our time management of the artists performing was a problem. The show had to have closed at midnight, but by that time several of the paid national and local art-ists still had to perform. This is why the performances dragged on longer,” says Ledwaba. She added that they were seriously going to look at the issue of time management next year, which includes stricter control over the

time given to artists performing and starting the performances earlier during the day.

It is the first time that Makoya Multi Media have hosted an event of this magnitude.

“We acknowledge that there were problems, not only with regard to the noise but also in terms of crowd control. We have learned a lot and will definitely take what we have learned and the criticism we received into account during our planning process for next year,” Ledwaba said.

Natasha Mostert

gekom. “Dodo kan net woorde leer

wat hy by Jamy hoor.

ermaritzburg tot by Diemersfon-tein, naby Wellington, voltooi.

Jernay McLeod van die Makhado Sorggroep by 083 403 5752 ska-kel, of me. Stienie Fourie by 072 552 9106 of 015 516 5151.

Skool ernstig oor morele restourasie

Your firearm licence could be waiting for you.

The provincial police in Lim-popo announced last week that they have hundreds of uncollect-ed licences across the province, waiting to be collected.

These include competency certificates, new licences as well as renewals of firearm licences.

According to a press statement, there are 40 licences waiting to be collected at the Makhado Po-lice Station. Thabazimbi has the highest number of uncollected

licences (106), while Nebo’s po-lice station has 80 and Polokwane has 41 licences.

Provincial commissioner Lt Gen Simon Mpembe has urged all persons who applied for fire-arm licences to go and collect their cards.

“We have tried in vain to lo-cate the owners of those cards. Some applicants have relocated whilst others have changed their addresses. We are now appealing to all persons who applied for firearm licences to go and col-

lect them at their nearest police station,” said Mpembe.

He added that applicants of firearm licences had to inform the police when they relocated or changed their addresses, so that it would be easy for the police to inform them when their cards were ready for collection.

Makhado residents can phone Col Bez Bezuidenhout to check whether their licence has arrived. He can be contacted during office hours at Tel. 082 414 8474.

Top: The Makhado Municipality explained on 11 July that the purpose of the trenches around the park in Baobab Street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) was to close down vehicles’ access to the area. “A lot of people park their cars there, which is dangerous. We are busy cleaning the area. We are going to put danger tape to warn or alert the people about the trenches,” municipal spokesperson Louis Bobodi said. Weeks later and with no visible effort to police the problem it is, however, obvious that vehicle owners were not deterred by the trenches. In the mean time, apparently realising their attempt had no effect, the municipality started closing up some of the trenches (below). It was “just a temporary measure” to keep vehicles out was the municipality’s reply when asked why they are now closing the trenches again.

The Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce will once again host their prestigious gala evening and performance awards ceremony on 27 October.

The Zoutpansberger’s website (www.zout-pansberger.co.za) offers rea ders a calendar entry service on their Events Page.

Visitors to the website can now list their calendar entries for upcoming events on the Events Page themselves. It is as easy as merely logging in on the Events Page through your existing Google, Facebook or Twitter accounts and uploading your entry. The entry will, however, not appear immediately as it has to go through a moderation process first.

In addition, sport club administrators (and

for that matter church and school administra-tors) can contact us to directly submit events on the Events Page without a moderations process. If an administrator is listed as a user on the site, their calendar entries will show im-mediately. This function allows administrators to update events through the year on a platform used by ten others publications throughout the province as part of both a local and provincial calendar.

Gesondheid

berading of psigoterapie.

The days of moonlighting for driving school owners are over.

This was revealed during the Vhembe Driving Schools legisla-tion workshop, held at the council chamber of the Vhembe District Municipality on Thursday.

The workshop was organised by the district municipality and was meant to help driving school owners to understand the new

legislation that will govern all driving schools. According to the legislation, the provincial MEC for transport will be the only per-son who can approve applications to run a driving school.

The MEC will suspend or cancel licenses of all driving schools that are not complying, and driving school owners will be held liable for the conduct of

their employees. The offering of bribes to instructors or testing officers might lead to the suspen-sion or cancelations of operation licenses of a driving school.

The workshop was attended by more than 100 driving school owners, heads of testing stations, instructors and managers for road traffic in Vhembe.

of [email protected] Way, the Truth and the LifeOne thing that moves people to obedi-

ence is a sense of God’s goodness and mercy towards them. And among all the evidence for this, there is nothing to equal the sending and giving of God’s Son for our redemption.

We read in 1 Pet 1:20 “He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for you sake.”

Before there was time or place or any creature, God, the blessed Trinity, was complete in Himself. But He wanted to communicate His Goodness. Among all the deeds the Lord planned before time, to be revealed in time, is His masterpiece. “Jesus was chosen before the creation of the world.” The manifestation of God in the flesh for man’s redemption.

We are the reason for this, for the second part of the verse says: “... was revealed in the last times for your sake.” The virtue of His death looks backward to all preceding ages, whose faith and sacrifices looked forward to His death. The same death is of perpetual value until the end of the world.

Our Saviour takes the sin between us and God out of the way and puts Himself between our sins and God. The Father cannot look on His well-beloved Son except in a gracious way. Take Christ out and everything is terrible, put Christ between us and God and everything is full of peace. Christ paid everything that was necessary. We are acquitted and have nothing to pay.

Accept Jesus as saviour and live in peace with God. Remember, “He did it for your sake.”

R160 000 collected for cancer care

CVO Skool Zoutpansberg gaan die Nasionale Senior Sertifikaat eksa-men skryf in 2012.

- Opvoedingsraad (CVO Skool Zoutpansberg)

Insake die artikel “Staat vat R11 miljoen se bates by Els” in die

Zoutpansberger van 27 Julie.Ek verstaan die hele berig baie

goed.

Hulle sou meer as my maagseer moes behan-del as dit ek was.

The Makhado Care group would like to thank every member of

our amazing community who has sup-ported us so well in our fundraising efforts. You have really opened your hearts and the responses have been nothing short of amazing.

There are still quite a few pledges outstanding, but we are already edging past the R160 000 mark! The banking details are: Makhado Care Group, Standard Bank Louis Trichardt, Branch code 052549 and account number 3316 57295.

This money will enable us to really help our local cancer patients in a variety of ways. We urge you to please inform us if you know of any member of our community who needs any form of assistance with a cancer-related issue.

To everyone who showed interest in The Freedom Challenge, donated, pledged, SMSed, followed on the blog and contributed in any way, we want to thank you from our hearts for your contribution.

We need a public apology from show

Whoever was in charge of the annual Makhado Show should

never be allowed to do so again in the future.

He/she has got no respect for the elderly people that stay next to the show grounds, nor respect for the Indian Muslim people that is now busy with Ramadaan, or respect for Christians by playing music till four o’clock on a Sunday morning.

The constitution of this country says we all must obey the laws, so just to refresh your memory, it is against the law to be noisy after a certain time at night.

We expect an apology from you in public and ask the municipality that it will never happen again.

Sterkte!! - Annette Engelbrecht

Annette, ek’t presies dieselfde as jy gehoor.

Sterkte! - Jaco Burger

Facebook question: Were you at the Makhado Annual show this past weekend? What did you

think? Let us know!

Kommentaar: No - but living right on the other side of town I could hear the music until

Sunday morning at 05h00 - which was disturb-ing - Petro van Rooyen

There isn’t much to think about. Why don’t they just not have a show any more? These so-

called shows are not shows maybe just a battle of the DJ’s with a few rides. If you want to talk about a show look back at 2005/ 2006 and the years before that. I say stop the show or make it real!!!!!

Yes. For me personally it was a glorified flea market, but as usual the children enjoyed

all the rides. Some rides were a little expensive though. - Antoinette Geerdts

Was altyd

- Natalie Hulshof Archer

Hy’t ‘n stille dood gesterf

Die blondine besoek Binne-landse Sake. Sy wil ‘n sterf-

Why do our municipal officials fail to carry out their jobs and enforce our

by-laws? After all, they have the personnel and equipment (photo 1).

But how do they fail to see that busi-nesses have taken over the sidewalks as showrooms (photo 2) and that pedes-trians have no alternative but to use the road?

Surely they must have noticed the tankers parked three abreast in a no stop-ping zone along the N1 (photo 3) or the taxis parked all day every day in a park (photo 4)? And the trucks parked for a week in another park (photo 5)?

I spent five minutes in Bauhinia Street between 13:45pm and 13:50 one Thurs-day and in that time I saw that 95% of cars failed to stop at the fourway stop at

the Leeu Street intersection (photo 6). It was not difficult in the five minutes to photograph 20 cars that failed to stop. They don’t stop, I suppose, because there is never any penalty for not stop-ping.

Closer to the municipal offices where all our officials are paid their salaries, a business has annexed the sidewalk as a warehouse and the street as a load-ing zone (photo 7). How is it possible that our municipal officials have never noticed this?

In Eltivillas, another business has long claimed our sidewalks and streets as their own loading area, destroying the road, kerbs and storm water drains in the process (photo 8).

And finally, where are the police

when you need them (photo 9)? Why, they have gone to Woolies for some shopping of course.

- Malcolm Tucker (Makhado, Louis Trichardt)

With regard to Mr Tucker’s letter and photos, Makhado municipal spokesper-son Mr Louis Bobodi responded by say-ing: “The municipality has taken note of the photos supplied to us. You would re-alize that most recently we are deploying our law-enforcement officers all over the town. We will leave no stone unturned to turn the situation around. And we will see to it that business should be done in places allocated for that and the law will take its course for those who found to be transgressing it [sic].”

Marco second in Ysterberg MTB raceA local junior cyclist, Marco Roets, performed very well on Saturday by ending second in the 40km The Ranch Ysterberg mountain bike race. He ended a mere second behind the win-ner, Chris de Klerk, in 01:48:36.

This year was only the second time that the race took place and it boasted a slightly differ-ent route. The 70km route included a 990 metre ascent up Ysterberg, with a fast descent back to the game reserve. The 40km route did not go as high up into the mountains, but included the tricky five kilometre single track at the end. A total of 220 riders took part in the 70km, 40km and 10km races.

Marco Roets’s performance was impressive, considering that his opponent is also a former Springbok triathlon athlete.

In the 70km race, the Soutpansberg’s well-known racing doctor, Casper Venter, once again showed his worth by winning the veteran cat-egory. This race was won by Gawie Combrinck, previously from Polokwane, but now residing in Nelspruit, where he and Nico Bell have teamed up to make a formidable mountainbiking team. Gawie destroyed the field by winning in 02:34:31, about 18 minutes before the rest of the field.

Other local cyclists who did well in the race were Nico Geldenhuis, who was the second sub-veteran home in the 70km race, and father-and-son combination Anton and Elardus van Zyl, who won the tandem category in the 40 km race.

Marco Roets ended second in the weekend´s The Ranch Ysterberg 40 km mountain bike race.

Die span se volgende kragmeting is by Bekker Skole in Magaliesburg en daarna by Groenkloof in Pretoria.
