Wyndham councillors and sta have claimed more than $83,000 in interstate trips over the past two years.

e councils register, which details all interstate and overseas trips by councillors and ocers, reveals 23 travel claims were made between June 5, 2014, and May 7, 2015, totalling $35,204.

In 2013-14, sta and councillors spent $48,481.

Claims can be lodged for any ights, registrations at conferences, accommodation, parking, taxi vouchers and other expenses relating to council-approved trips.

Councillors and sta must disclose all overseas and interstate travel except for interstate travel by land of less than three days.

All travel is approved by either chief executive Kerry ompson or a council director.

Travel expense totals come as frustrated Wyndham residents are calling on the council to spend more on local roads and infrastructure.

In the past year, most travel claims were made to attend and present at national conferences or award ceremonies.

e most expensive individual claim was $2853 by nancial services manager Binda Gokhale, who ew to Sydney in March to attend the Local Government Financial Sustainability conference.

e council also approved $10,737 for chief executive Kerry ompson and councillors Glenn Goodfellow, Heather Marcus and Bob Fairclough to attend the Australian Local Government Associations (ALGA) National Assembly of Local Government in Canberra.

Western Alliance for Greenhouse Action climate adaption ocer Heather McClaren ew to the Gold Coast to attend the National Climate Change Adaption Research Facility annual conference, while WAGA co-ordinator Fran McDonald went to Sydney last August for the Government and Sustainability conference.

In February this year, the council forked out $3234 for two of its sta to attend the Australian Library and Information Association Online conference.

Other claims include $1963 for project manager Jonathan Morris to attend an Information Technology in Aged Care conference in Hobart and $1958 for economic development manager Daryl Wilson to attend the Economic Development Australia conference in Darwin.

Ms ompson said the council determined which events and conferences were worth attending based on their benets to Wyndham,

and said the ALGA conference was very important for council-related policy and government relations.

e ALGA National Assembly of Local Government was attended by four representatives and this enabled meetings to occur with federal government ministers, shadow ministers, and key government sta.

Meetings are also held at the same time with the National Growth Areas Alliance.

In two instances, Star Weekly noted marked Star Weekly noted marked Star Weeklydisparities in the amount claimed by council sta attending the same event. In one case, sustainable development director Dean Rochfort and community development director Kelly Grigsby both attended the National Growth Areas Alliance National Congress in Adelaide last October. Mr Rochfort claimed $2299 in travel expenses while Ms Grigby claimed $1667.

Ms ompson said in both cases, the dierences related to which person incurred the most shared costs.

Sharing a car to the airport will result in one person paying for the parking or a taxi charge or car hire fee for four people, being on one persons receipt, she said. It is important to note that costs allocated are based on credit card amounts or receipts returned, rather than being aggregated out across people who attended.

    By Charlene Macaulay

A Wyndham Vale primary school has forked out thousands of dollars on grati removal and replacing broken windows aer vandals have repeatedly trashed the school and neighbouring properties.

Iramoo Primary School assistant principal Ray Burrell said the school and surrounding properties had been the target of vandalism on an almost weekly basis since the Easter school holidays.

Mr Burrell said neighbours fences and in

one instance, a neighbours car had also been gratied.

e most recent oence occurred at 9.45pm on May 6, when the schools CCTV cameras caught two unidentied female oenders breaking windows and painting grati. Neighbouring properties were hit in the same attack.

e oenders were wearing hoodies during the attack.

Its pretty well been every weekend, Mr Burrell said. Sometimes theres heaps of damage and grati, sometimes theres not so

once a year, on average, but this has been more consistent the tags have been the same, so we think its the same people doing it.

Mr Burrell said the school ensured the attacks did not disrupt classes.

In last weeks school newsletter, school principal Moira Findlay called on community members to report vandalism to police.

Senior Constable Kellie Innes from Wyndham Police said they had received one report regarding the May 6 attack.

A Werribee mum is going the extra mile to protect children against sexual assault.

Next month, Danielle McLaren will take on the Bravehearts 777 challenge of completing seven marathons across seven states and territories in seven days.

e event will raise money for childrens charity Bravehearts.

Ms McLaren, who is a primary school teacher, said the staggering statistics on child sexual assault in Australia were motivating her to compete in the event.

Currently, one in ve children are harmed in some way before they turn 18, she said.

is means there could be ve victims in my classroom alone. As a teacher and a mother of a young girl, I want to do what I can to raise awareness on how we can prevent this crime from ever happening.

Ms McLaren will be supported on her journey by her family and is looking forward to them cheering her on during the Melbourne leg.

[My daughter] has only just turned ve but shes been going around at social events and fundraisers telling everyone that Im doing a big race, she said.

She knows all the money to going towards helping children.

Im just so proud that Ive already made a huge dierence for the cause through not only donations, but also the broader awareness of Bravehearts and child sexual assault.

Bravehearts 777 will take place between June 29 and July 5 and involves marathons in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart, Canberra, Kingscli and Gold Coast.

Vulnerable women and children in Melbournes western suburbs have been completely ignored by last weeks federal budget, Womens Health West contends.

e Footscray-based service provider is facing unprecedented pressure to meet a growing demand for help from women facing family violence, receiving 6893 police referrals in the 10 months since July well above the 6209 referrals in the prior 12 months and almost 10 times the 708 referrals received in 2006-07.

Chief executive Dr Robyn Gregory said the Abbott governments failure to provide any signicant funding to tackle family violence ew in the face of its rhetoric on the issue.

She also criticised the governments attacks on childcare support and paid parental leave.

Its really disappointing to a see a budget that is a bit of a reverse Robin Hood.

Dr Gregory said that despite the federal governments stated commitment to reducing violence against women in the home, frontline services have undergone devastating cuts that put women at risk.

She said the previously announced $16.7 million allocated to a family violence awareness campaign would be far better spent on programs by primary providers.

We have got strategies we can roll out but we need the funds to do it, she said. e government is spending $1.2 billion on terror and $16 million on violence in the home.

Residents of Hogans Road in Hoppers Crossing have petitioned Wyndham council for residential parking, saying overow parking from a nearby mosque and church is taking over.

e petition, signed by 21 people, says residents are unable to leave their driveways safely or park on the road on Fridays and Sundays because of the volume of trac.

It is not the rst time the residents have written to the council about the issue and a

are getting too big for the area and we feel its a safety issue.

Council chief executive Kerry ompson said the council installed parking bay limits in the street in 2013 aer the rst petition.

She said the limits were aimed at addressing the issue of cars restricting access.

Werribee Islamic Centre president Mohamed Masood said the mosque asked people to obey parking restrictions along Hogans Road.

If theres any illegal parking or people block driveways, we always alert them, he

We just advise drivers to move and we have volunteers in Hogans Road to make sure cars are not blocking driveways.

Its typically only busy on Friday during the middle of the day and on Sundays, but there arent that many cars on the road just let people worship.

South West Christian Church did not respond before Star Weekly went to print.

A report on the petition will be presented to council on June 22.

    Residents want parking priority

e state government needs to shi its focus from the south-east to the west and reduce trac congestion in growth areas, according to Road Minister Luke Donnellan.

Mr Donnellan, who visited Point Cook last week to announce a $3.75 million cash injection to upgrade Palmers and Dunnings roads, said it was important new residents could move freely around their area.

e funding, which is part of the state governments 2015-16 budget, will go towards a new lane for bus and multi-occupancy vehicles on Palmers Road, northbound between Dunnings Road and Skeleton Creek.

e transit lane will operate on week days from 6.30-9.30am for buses and cars with two or more passengers, with indented bays provided at bus stops.

Trac lights at the corner of Palmers and Dunnings roads will be adjusted to allow buses more time to pass through the intersection.

Palmers is one of Wyndhams most congested roads, with a 2014 council trac volume report revealing 23,700 vehicles use it daily.

Wyndham council has also put $3 million towards the project, with construction due to start in mid-2016.

is project will cut travel times and reduce the frustration that drivers are experiencing every day, Mr Donnellan said.

Cr Glenn Goodfellow said the state funding was an important rst step in clearing the trac congestion in Point Cook.

e government is also spending $1.9 million to widen the Princes Freeway o-ramp at Forsyth Road to two lanes and extend the existing slip lane, with work due to start early next year. e ramp was the scene of eight crashes, one resulting in serious injury, in the ve years to December, 2014.

When a contestant on e Block hits his e Block hits his e Blockthumb with a hammer, are we subjected to a barrage of expletives from him or his teammate? What about when a Masterchef hopeful burns the bacon; is there a cut-away to his or her family swearing like there is no tomorrow? e answer is no.

So why do we have to be subjected to swearing when we watch sports events? What value does it bring to the broadcast to see a senior AFL coach barking out a tirade of colourful adjectives and nouns that his mother would not be pleased to hear at the dinner table? Many blame the coaches as they know they are being lmed and that is a fair point. But at what point does it become intrusive and not in the best interests of the game?

We all want our coaches to have passion. We do want to ride the rollercoaster with them as a game goes through its ups and downs. Does any real footy fan want to see the coach drop a few f-bombs aer an opposition goal? If you ask a television producer, they will say we do want to see that. I am here to tell them we dont.

e TV producers have the power, with technology, to clean this up. I dont want my 10-year-old to think it is OK to swear when the opposition kicks a goal because he saw Nathan Buckley or Luke Beveridge do it.

Rodney Eade has taken to covering his mouth when he talks, so the cameras and lip readers cant see what hes saying. at is not a good look either but I totally understand.

I dont subscribe to the philosophy that sportspeople are role models, to be honest, because so many are awed Lance Armstrong, Mike Tyson etc.

And critcising coaches on match day is like shooting sh in a barrel.

Football is trying to be more inclusive, to attract a wider audience, and I think we have reached the stage where seeing, or hearing, bad behaviour is no longer entertaining or enlightening.

It is becoming a blight, not on the game, but on the broadcasters and is, in fact, harming the standing of at least one senior AFL coach. Your thoughts are welcome.

Hoppers Crossing resident Khurram Khan took out the top honour at a recent awards ceremony, adding to whats fast becoming an extensive slew of awards.

e 20-year-old, who arrived in Wyndham from Pakistan only two years ago, was recognised with a Mayoral Youth Award in the Community Service, Volunteering and Leadership category in 2014 for his work volunteering tutoring science students in the Sudanese Community.

He also received the Victorian Premiers New Resident Volunteer of the Year Award late last year.

Apart from tutoring, Mr Khan also volunteers with a range of charity organisations, including St Vincent de Paul and Amnesty International, and is a member of Hoppers Crossing Rotary Club.

Councillor Marie Brittan said Mr Khan, who is studying biomedicine at Melbourne University, demonstrated what Wyndham youths were capable of, regardless of their circumstances.

Wyndham workers will be among the biggest casualties when Toyotas Altona plant ceases production at the end of 2017.

Advocacy group LeadWest predicts the loss of 2500 jobs from the Altona manufacturing plant will cut the employment prole of Melbournes west including all direct, industrial and consumption eects by as many as 5191 jobs.

LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley estimates Wyndham residents will comprise 25 per cent of job losses, ahead of Hobsons Bay (14 per cent) and Maribyrnong (8.5 per cent)

residents. e group will present its ndings to the Senate Economics References Committee inquiry into the future of Australias automotive industry later this month.

LeadWests estimate of job losses follows an Australian Workplace Innovation and Social Research Centre report last year, which concluded the end of automotive manufacturing by Ford, Holden, Toyota and suppliers could result in 17,441 jobs losses across the west by 2017.

Mr Rowley said the closure of the Toyota plant would create a new set of challenges for the west.

eres no doubt that the loss of those jobs

    Fears for wests working future

has a ow-on eect that takes other jobs out of the regions economy, he said. We already have the challenge of needing to rebalance the regions economy so its not so overly dependent on manufacturing and has more professional services.

is just makes that challenge all the more harder, he said. We really need to pick up the pace on job creation.

Wyndham councillor and economic development portfolio holder Intaj Khan agreed.

eres a lot more work that needs to be done to get good employers maybe a government agency like Centrelink, or the Australian Tax Oce to support Wyndhams growth, he said.

Closing Toyota will impact a lot of workers. I know were trying to promote the idea of living locally and working locally but we also need to create jobs locally.

At the moment, were lacking the big corporations and this is what we really need, Cr Khan said.

A Manor Lakes photographer wants to capture Wyndhams cultural diversity through her lens and she needs help.

Ellen Clendining plans to exhibit as many as 100 Wyndham portraits for her upcoming exhibition, Faces of Wyndham, at Manor Lakes Community Centre later this year.

Clendining started working on the exhibition in January and is keen to recruit more people for her collection.

She said she wants people from all walks of life and has already taken the portraits of new immigrants, long-time Wyndham residents, council employees, stay-at-home-mums and business owners.

I have travelled and lived overseas, been involved with many dierent cultural groups and have found the amazing, mundane, beautiful, ugly, good and bad in every group.

We are all humans, Clendining said.It is our life experience, ancestry, cultural

identity and unique outlook that makes each one of us an individual.

Clendining has lived at Manor Lakes for the past three-and-a-half years.

She said she is surprised and disappointed by the negative perception Melburnians still have about the western suburbs.

I wanted to put something together to showcase that Wyndham has some amazing people, she said.

eres a diverse group of people that make up our community.

Animal welfare groups and Wyndham council have criticised the ne given to a puppy farm operator by Werribee magistrates court as so.

Anthony Sammut, 73, of Sunshine West, pleaded guilty on Monday to running an unregistered domestic animal business at his property on Old Melbourne Road, Little River.

He was ned $5000 and agreed to a ve-year ban on operating a domestic animal business.

Sammut previously appeared in court, charged with 13 other oences in relation to his Little River operations. ese charges were dropped by the council last month aer Sammut agreed to a ve-year ban and to demolish the infrastructure of his business.

e maximum penalty for running an unregistered puppy farm is $23,000 and a ban of up to 10 years on running a domestic animal business.

e court heard that on October 14 last year, council ocers visited the property to nd a number of dogs conned in pens.

e councils lawyer, Basil Staord, said although the property was not registered as a domestic animal business, it was apparent to the ocers that a such a business was under way. Mr Staord said six dogs were taken from the property by the council. Five have since been re-homed.

e court heard that the property had been inspected by council ocers in 2012 and found to be compliant with the then code of practice.

In 2004, Sammut was convicted of similar

oences in relation to operating a domestic animal business.

In handing down his judgement, magistrate Timothy Bourke said Sammuts actions could not be condoned.

ese farms take advantage of families and young children, who pay high fees in respect to these puppies, let alone the damage it may cause from interbreeding of the puppies, he said. is is the sort of oence in which we must send a message it is not to be tolerated.

Council chief executive Kerry ompson said the council would have preferred the court had imposed a higher nancial penalty, however, the main goal was to have the business shut down.

We are disappointed $5000 is not close enough to the maximum penalty that could have been imposed, she said. is low nancial penalty is indicative of the so approach that the courts seem to take in matters involving the inappropriate treatment of animals which is the main reason why council elected to drop some charges to ensure a guilty plea against the most serious charge.

Oscars Law founder Debra Tranter, one of about 50 protestors outside court, said she was incredibly disappointed, describing the ne as only a couple of litters of puppies.

e Werribee Art Gallerys new art prize is up and running.

e Wyndham Art Prize, which will be judged by McClelland Gallery curator Penny Teale, is oering a $10,000 main prize, two Deakin University bursaries and a $2000 peoples choice award.

Wyndham councillor Bob Fairclough said the prize and exhibition, which opened last week, had the potential to become an annual event of national signicance.

is prize not only ensures visitors to the gallery will be able to view some high-calibre artwork, it also builds on Wyndham Art Gallerys reputation as being one of Melbournes nest suburban art spaces, he said.

e exhibition features works from artists as far away as New Zealand, and as close as Werribee.

Point Cook artist Helen Pallikaros (pictured here with her work) hopes the inclusion in the exhibition of her photo collection, e Mourning Series, will raise her prole as an artist. e Mourning Series is a trio of self-portraits, each depicting Pallikaros with dierent masks or guises.

It was an experiment in using myself in my work, she said. My work is about identity and gender and the feminine. Its about more than creating an aesthetic piece its about creating something with meaning.

Doing art is my way of getting my message out there and telling my story.

e Wyndham Art Prize exhibition is at the Wyndham Art Gallery, 177 Watton Street, Werribee, until June 28.

Wyndham police are calling on residents to lock up their properties following recent home burglaries where thieves entered through unlocked doors.

Senior Constable Kellie Innes said there were two home robberies in Point Cook last week in which thieves entered through unlocked back doors. People were at home during both burglaries.

Senior Constable Innes said that despite a fall in home burglaries across Wyndham, of those that had occurred there were a growing number where thieves entered properties through

unlocked doors. She said Point Cook properties in particular were the target of overnight burglaries, with thieves usually gaining access through garages, laundry doors or backyard sliding doors.

Weve seen a drop in residential burglaries over the past month retail premises, factories and houses under construction are more likely to be targeted than [established homes], she said.

We just ask people to keep everything locked. If you keep it locked, thieves wont be able to get in.

e vast majority of burglaries occur during the day when no one is home, because burglars

Lock up or luck out, police warn

really dont want to get caught. ey only want to go in quietly at night if it is very easy.

ose night-time ones are rare, extremely rare.

A survey by insurer RACV found that one in 25 Williams Landing properties was broken into during the 2013-14 nancial year, making it Melbournes equal top burglary hotspot alongside Ardeer.

e gures, based on Victoria Police crime statistics and Census data, reveal the average number of homes burgled across Victoria was one in 73.

RACVs general manager of home services, Peter Brindley, said it was the third consecutive year in which Williams Landing had featured prominently in the top 10 of most-burgled suburbs, a list that has been dominated by suburbs across the west and north.

e best way to avoid the nancial cost and emotional trauma of a burglary is prevention, Mr Brindley said.

Awareness of security should be a habit, not just an occasional thought.

Upgrades add to logjamI was pleased to see that money has been approved for the upgrade of Palmers Road south of the freeway but appalled at the suggested solution.

It is clear that the fundamental problem in the morning peak is at the single-lane, north-bound sections, including the Skeleton Creek bridge, where the trafc light-regulated vehicles queuing to enter the freeway stop all cars going to the station and further north. This is worsened by the student drop-off trafc moving east in Dunnings Road, north in Palmers Road and west into Inverloch Drive, that bank-up the cars even further.

A restricted transit lane will not reduce the 20 minutes it takes to get over the freeway from Dunnings Road. This terrible state of affairs, only a short time after the station was opened, will only worsen as more houses are developed and the grossly inadequate carparking at Williams Landing station pushes even more cars to parking on roads.

    Peter Downie, Point Cook

Princes Freeway off-ramp at Palmers Road should also have two lanes. There is a long queue during peak time on the Point Cook side that blocks all trafc to Williams Landing and Truganina.

Wyndham commuters will need to wait just over four weeks before they can catch trains from the new Tarneit and Wyndham Vale Regional Rail Link (RRL) stations.

e new stations were completed late last year and the new 45-kilometre link between Southern Cross Station and west Werribee was due to open in April.

But the opening was pushed back earlier this year when the state government discovered there werent enough V/Line trains to run on the line.

Sights trained on openinge $4.3 billion project will now open on

June 21, eight weeks behind schedule.e link is the rst major expansion of the

states rail network in more than 30 years and is designed to separate regional and metropolitan trains.

Once RRL is open, Wyndham commuters wishing to travel to and from Geelong will need to catch a train from the new stations at Tarneit or Wyndham Vale, instead of Werribee.

It is anticipated that the new link will allow trains to run more frequently on the Werribee line.

    e government maintains the delayed

opening of RRL means commuters will be spared chaos and confusion.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the previous government did not order new V/Line carriages for two years aer they came to oce, meaning there were not enough trains to run on the line.

Public Transport Victoria chief executive Mark Wild said that it was important to ensure the new network operated as smoothly as possible from day one.

We thank customers for continued patience so we can ensure we deliver the more reliable and consistent services they deserve, he said.

A 27-year-old Hoppers Crossing man has been arrested following a bomb scare at the Wyndham North police station in Tarneit last week that put the area in lockdown.

The man reversed his car into the secure police station carpark last Thursday afternoon while a delivery was being made.

The police station and nearby homes were evacuated about 1.30pm while the bomb response unit conducted precautionary safety checks on the car.

Local resident Shane Lambourn, who had to leave his home, told Channel 9 the police had seemed urgent.

We werent panicked; we werent sure, he said.

Police later gave the area the all clear and the man was then conveyed to hospital for assessment.

Victoria Police are unsure why the man reversed the car into the carpark and would not comment on what made police evacuate the station and surrounding homes.

Police later released a statement confirming that no threats had been made.

No charges had been laid by the time Star Weekly went to print.

e Werribee Football Club is hopeful the redevelopment of Chirnside Park will be one of the projects included in a new state government fund to help interface councils build infrastructure.

e fund was announced in the state budget and provides Melbournes 10 interface councils with a share of $50 million.

Tigers chief executive Mark Penaluna said the club would lobby the Wyndham council to put the project forward for consideration.

Tigers push for state cashLocal Government Minister Natalie Hutchins with Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard and MP Cesar Melhem. (Damjan Janevski)

As reported by Star Weekly, the Chirnside Park redevelopment has been put on hold while the council tries to secure government funding.

e council has agreed to put up $5.5 million for the project but wont include it in its budget until government funding is guaranteed.

e Tigers, AFL and AFL Victoria are also contributing to the project.

e redevelopment would provide Chirnside Park with change rooms for umpires and women, a canteen and a li to the rst-oor social room.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said the $50 million fund would not be allocated until later this year. She met with Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard and council chief executive ocer Kerry ompson last Wednesday to discuss potential projects that could benet from the fund.

Councils advocacy director Bill Forrest said the council had not decided which projects it would put forward because it was waiting for application guidelines.

But he said the council had a number of shovel-ready projects that could benet from the fund.

Junior football and netball teams from across the western suburbs are joining forces to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

irty-three under-16s teams from the Western Region Football League and under-15 netball teams from the Werribee Netball Association have signed up to be part of a new program called Read e Play.

e program is aimed at raising awareness about mental illness and provide players with information on where to get help. It has been running in Geelong for about nine years.

Program committee chairman Luke Wenlock said he inquired about expanding the program to Wyndham aer a player in his sons basketball team committed suicide.

We need to let players know that there are resources available, such as Headspace, he said.

e program will be launched on Wednesday, May 27, at the Wyndham Vale Football Club from 6pm.

Clubs will then be contacted three to four times a year to discuss any issues and provide support to players.

Mr Wenlock said the sports community had thrown its support behind the program, while Werribees Bendigo Bank branch is funding the rst year.

ere has been awesome support, he said.

e Victorian Boating Industry is calling for more blue infrastructure such as boat stackers and ramps, to cater for a doubling of population in Melbournes west by 2050.

Chief executive Steven Potts said the boating industry contributed $4.5 billion annually to the Victorian economy and employed 17,700 Victorians adding western suburbs councils have an opportunity to capitalise on boating tourism.

We rmly believe we need to look at a long-term plan for the entire bay but particularly for the councils where we can all work together to ensure theres access, as the population doubles, for all users bike paths, walking paths, through to boating access as well, Mr Potts said.

Werribee South is a beautiful boat ramp on the mouth of the Werribee River, so its a safe boat harbour; Wyndham Harbour is being built around the corner what wed like to see is more of those facilities and how to implement them along the rest of the coast.

Mr Potts said more parking infrastructure was needed for both boats and trailers.

What were suggesting is to look at it from an event management style, about how we can use overow carparking, how we can put trailers in other grassed areas that can be used for that short period and retted later on, he said.

ere are some proposals for some more boat-stacking facilities, so theyre in a big garage that can be three boats high. In a lot of cases theyre privately owned, so it can be a private partnership arrangement theres many dierent ways they can be funded.

Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said the municipality was well served by two boat

    Ramp up for bay tourism

ramps at Altona and Newport and a number of sailing and marine clubs in Williamstown.

However, all these facilities come at considerable cost to council and boating clubs, in terms of maintenance of this infrastructure and the increasing pressures, particularly on our boats ramps, as a result of the lack of

    STEVEN POTTS (Sha

    wn

facilities elsewhere along the north-western coastline of Port Phillip Bay, she said.

Council certainly would be very supportive of improved state government investment and support of our existing facilities and in new facilities in other municipalities along the north-western coastline.

Helping out has never tasted so good. More than 600 Bakers Delight bakeries

around the country, including this one at Werribee Plaza, are donating 100 per cent of the sale of its pink nger buns to Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).

e June 3 fundraiser aims to raise $1.5 million for BCNA information resources, including the My Journey Kit, an information pack for women newly diagnosed.

Jillian Lawrow knows rst-hand how important it is to stay informed and receive support when you have breast cancer.

e 53-year-old, of Seabrook, was diagnosed with triple negative cancer in 2006 aer discovering a lump while in the shower.

Triple negative breast cancer does not have any of the three receptors commonly found

on breast cancer cells and means treatment is slightly dierent to that given to other patients.

Triple negative breast cancer is like a naughty child and can oen come back early on, Ms Lawrow said.

She had a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiation before getting the all-clear.

She said the BCNAs My Journey Kits and online support group helped alleviate some of the stress and concern during her diagnosis and treatment.

You want to be able to look over the factual information in more detail and hear about other peoples journeys, she said.

e Pink Bun campaign has run for 15 years and raised more than $7.7 million for BCNA.

Volunteers are helping revive the historic homestead precinct at Werribee Park.

e homestead, which is a short walk from Werribee Mansion, features the original houses, stables and yards of the former Chirnside family farm.

e area now also includes a chook mansion, built by Work for the Dole volunteers.

e group has spent about 280 hours building the eight-metre by seven-metre wire enclosure from recycled materials found at Werribee Park.

e fox-proof yard has a mesh roof, a grass pad to provide nutrition to boost egg production and areas inside the pen that are shaded by lemon, lime, orange and feijoa trees.

Volunteers from the Karen community have also created three vegetable plots at the

homestead. One of the plots features a woven bamboo gazebo that is covered in climbing beans.

Werribee Park senior horticulturist Adam Smith said it is great to see the original and oldest part of the park coming back to life.

Its a great example of just how much can be achieved with help from dedicated groups of volunteers, he said.

Wyndham council has ruled out installing CCTV cameras in Werribee CBD despite a state government oer to fund the technology.

As part of the Justice Departments community crime prevention program, councils can apply for grants of up to $250,000 to use urban design and technology such as CCTV and lighting, to boost safety.

Police Minister Wade Noonan said the program would ensure crime prevention was done in consultation with local communities

pay ongoing costs, including monitoring and maintenance.

She added that monitoring of safety in public places was a matter for police in consultation with the government.

is is not something that has been pursued by council as advice from local police is that

and would help them assess ways to reduce crime.

e need for CCTV cameras in Werribees CBD, particularly around Watton Street, has been raised repeatedly by residents and local businesses.

But the council has ruled out applying for the grants, saying CCTV required ongoing funding and was not needed in Wyndham.

Chief executive Kerry ompson said previous governments had oered funding for CCTV cameras but that required council to provide considerable extra money as well as

they have sucient access to CCTV footage from other parties if required for evidence, Ms ompson said.

Should the police have new evidence that would lead them to reconsider this, council will participate in the identication of the actions required to develop an appropriate response.

Improving community safety is a priority for this council.

If there are concerns that greater safety measures are required for Werribee CBD, we will be pleased to support a campaign for increased local police resources.

The tank was donated to Woodville Primary School by GreenCo Water to help teachers educate pupils about the importance of water conservation. Woodville Primary School is one of 12 schools to receive a water tank. Principal Lyn Vincent says the tank will be a valuable resource, enabling the collection of rainwater for use on the kitchen garden. Our garden provides rst-hand experience of what it means to be environmentally friendly and the rewards reaped from gardening include fresh, healthy and delicious vegies for our students, she said. Wyndham police were out en masse patrolling railway station carparks earlier this month in a crackdown on car thes across the city.

Wyndhams vehicle crime reduction team, general duties and transit police detected 33 offences during Operation Railway.

The five-day operation particularly targeted vehicle thefts in and around carparks at train stations and Werribee Plaza.

Police arrested four people with outstanding warrants, two for theft from motor vehicles, three for theft of motor

vehicles, one for theft, three for assaults and one for a threat to kill. A further 11 people were caught for driving unregistered vehicles, six for license-related offences and two for speeding-related offences.

Detective Acting Sergeant Mick Welsh of Wyndhams vehicle crime reduction team said Hoppers Crossing, Werribee and Williams Landing train station carparks, along with those at Werribee Plaza, were hotspots for vehicle crime.

He said the sheer number of vehicles le unattended for long periods at carparks every day proved a treasure trove for car thieves.

Detective Acting Sergeant Welsh said loose

    Carparks a thiefs goldmine

change, GPS devices and mobile phones were among the most commonly stolen items, with thieves mainly gaining access through unlocked car doors.

We believe that, during the course of this operation, there was a reduction in reported the from and of motor vehicles in those locations.

National Motor Vehicle e Reduction Council gures reveal 1779 cars were stolen across Wyndham between 2010 and 2014. Hoppers Crossing topped the list for the most cars stolen in 2014, with 120 cars, while Werribee (103 car thes), Point Cook (59), Tarneit (44) and Truganina (36) rounded out the top ve hotspots.

Detective Acting Sergeant Welsh called on drivers to lock their cars and to take away, or hide, any valuables rather than leaving them on view.

He also warned drivers using a GPS device to clean their windscreen to remove any tell-tale marks.
