A former Point Cook real estate agent has been convicted and fined for attempting to bribe a public official following an investigation by Victorias anti-corruption watch- dog.

Simon Khouri was charged with bribery and attempted bribery after a probe by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission found he had attempted to bribe Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust employees to secure additional gravesites, over and above what is permitted under cemetery rules.

Khouri pleaded guilty to the charge of attempting to bribe a public official and was fined $10,000.

IBAC commissioner Stephen Bryan said Khouris conviction sent a clear message that corrupt conduct will not be tolerated in Victoria.

Bribery and other forms of corruption undermine peoples trust and respect in government services and damage the reputation of the public sector, he said.

IBAC is committed to exposing, investigating and preventing corruption to help ensure the community can have confidence in our public sector.

Two of Wyndhams three state Labor MPs have been elevated to key roles in Dan Andrews first Cabinet.

Werribee MP Tim Pallas has been given the all-important treasury portfolio and faces a huge job managing the budget and delivering on Labors raft of pre-election promises.

Altona MP Jill Hennessy, a former Western Health and Western Region Health board member, was handed the critical health and ambulance services portfolios.

New Tarneit MP Telmo Languiller has been endorsed as speaker in the lower house.

Mr Pallas, who was first elected to the seat of Tarneit in 2006, served as the roads and ports minister in the former Bracks and Brumby governments until 2010.

Ms Hennessy said her immediate priorities included improving ambulance response times. The priorities are to end the previous Liberal governments war on our hard-working paramedics, address the systems failings, and find the beds in our hospitals that will enable us to treat more patients.

Im excited about implementing Labors commitments in the health portfolio, particularly the building of a new Western Womens and Childrens Hospital. I look forward to working with service providers and the community to determine how best to deliver health services for people right across our growing west into the future.

Mercy Health chief executive Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen said they would be seeking an urgent meeting with Mr Pallas and Ms Hennessy to discuss funding for Werribee Mercy Hospitals proposed $85 million expansion, including a

    Big jobs for wests MPs

desperately needed critical care unit. We have demonstrated the hospitals inability to deliver several basic health services, he said. Government funding is needed soon.

Committee for Wyndham chief executive Chris Potaris said his group would also be requesting a meeting with the government to push the case for more bus services in Wyndham, for driving business investment

and job creation, new schools, a second major river crossing and alternative to the West Gate Bridge, road upgrades in growth areas and a commitment to the proposed Wyndham justice precinct.

Mr Potaris said he would also encourage the government to re-examine Labors proposed Bay West option for Melbournes second port at Point Wilson, between Werribee and Geelong.

Werribees Lisa Skinner believes she can never truly repay the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for the care she and her loved ones have received. But she hopes that raising $5000 for the centre will be a good start.

Ms Skinner was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2010 and had a double mastectomy at the centre two months later, followed by three months of chemotherapy.

Ms Skinners husband, Peter, was diagnosed with bowel cancer soon after and started radiation just days before her chemotherapy.

Peter died in February 2012 and thats when Ms Skinner vowed to live her life to the fullest and give back to the Peter Mac.

So when she saw an advertisement for the Weekend to End Womens Cancers, she knew she had to sign up. As a result she will take part in a 60-kilometre walk around Melbourne on February 28 and March 1.

It will never be enough to say thank you, but Ill try to do it every year, she said.

I want to help with cancer research because my sons and I have the BRCA 2 gene and they have a 50-50 chance of getting breast cancer.

I dont want them to go through the treatment Ive gone through because its radical. Its so hard to have a part of you taken away.

Ms Skinner said she was still in regular contact with her breast nurse from Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, saying her support had been invaluable over the years.

My mother was diagnosed with cancer this year so I rang my breast nurse and asked her to look out for mum at Peter Mac, she said.

You couldnt go to a nicer place, so I wanted my mum to go there.

The body of a fisherman was found floating near Altona boat ramp last Wednesday.

Police say the body is that of a 65-year-old angler who went fishing on Tuesday afternoon at Werribee. He had told his family he would be home about 5pm.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Creina OGrady said the mans 5.3-metre fibreglass boat was located on Tuesday and his body was found on Wednesday morning.

A full search commenced [Wednesday] morning involving the police air wing, water police, local police, SES and coast guard and his body was located just before 11am, floating in Altona Bay.

It sounds like hes fallen from his boat. The boat was located about half a mile from

the mans body.Sergeant Scott Petch of the Williamstown

water police said the apparent cause of death was drowning but the circumstances were yet to be ascertained. He said the mans disappearance was not reported until Wednesday morning.

Were only as good as the information we receive and we were contacted 9.35am [Wednesday] morning, Sergeant Petch said.

Probably the big message here is that a lot of people, fishermen being fishermen [say], Oh, Ill be back later on tonight, darl.

But then the fish will be biting and youll go, You know what, Ill just wait one more tide change. And the tide change occurs every six hours and 20 minutes or whatever.

As a result, now youre eight hours, 10 hours behind when you should have been home.

The message for us is, if youre going to go boating, tell somebody what time you intend to be back and if you change your plans, let them know.

Lynne Kosky has been remembered as a daughter of the west and a courageous woman bursting with determination to improve the lives of others.

The former Altona MP and Labor minister died at her Williamstown home last Thursday after a long battle with cancer at age 56.

She is survived by her husband Jim Williamson, daughter Hana and son Jackson.

Ms Kosky was a councillor and mayor of the former city of Footscray in the late 1980s and was on the Coode Island review panel set up to improve community safety after the 1991 fire.

Labor leaders paid tribute to Ms Kosky, who was a member of political network Emilys List, as a role model and mentor for women.

Victorias only female premier, Williamstown resident Joan Kirner, said Ms Kosky had pushed the door wide open for other women.

I first met her when she was a community education worker and was impressed then with how vibrant she was, how full of life she was and how determined she was to change things in terms of social and economic justice.

Ms Koskys contributions to educational reform, including introduction of the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning as a vocational alternative to the Victorian Certificate of Education, led Victoria University to award her an honorary doctorate in 2010.

Lynnes connections with the western suburbs, education and VU specifically were deep, long-lasting and impactful, said vice-chancellor and president Professor Peter Dawkins.

Former premier Steve Bracks said Ms Kosky, a community activist since her early 20s, had been especially committed to the west.

She was a reformist, she was about change

and about improving the lives of people more broadly, he said. Most of what she did was in Melbournes west. Shes had an abiding commitment to the people in this region and she took that into Parliament.

Western Bulldogs Football Club mourned the passing of a good friend, former director and No.1 ticket holder. Lynne played a critical role in the fightback of 1989 which saved our club from a merger with Fitzroy, taking a leading role in the negotiations with the VFL to facilitate our independent survival, said president Peter Gordon, a long-time friend.

Lynne was our first female director and one of the first women to open the way for the many women who serve on AFL boards today. Lynne was a bright, intelligent, committed and passionately concerned daughter of the west.

Ms Koskys family has requested that in lieu of flowers, people make donations to The Substation, the community arts centre at Newport which she chaired.

Substation vice-president Dominic Arcaro said Ms Koskys grace, humour and guidance would be missed around the board table.

Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong councils expressed their deep sadness at the loss but also their gratitude for Ms Koskys legacy.

Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach credited Ms Kosky for saving Maribyrnong College from closure and transforming it into the start-of-the-art Maribyrnong Sports Academy.

A state funeral will be held at Williamstown Town Hall on Friday at 11am.

When the doors close on the Werribee Plaza library on January 12 it will be the end of a 21-year chapter.

The library will re-open at 10am on January 27 in its new location, on the first floor of the shopping centres revamped entertainment precinct.

The relocated library will be the same size as the present library and is expected to attract about 400,000 visitors a year.

Throughout the transition, opening hours at Werribee CBD library will be extended to 8pm Monday to Thursday. It will also open from 1.30-5pm on Sunday. Users will be able to return items, make requests to hold a book or make renewals at any of the citys other three library branches.

    Wyndham councils employment, education

and training portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus, said the new library would be worth the wait.

It will feature new and upgraded facilities, including a quiet study room.

During the closure, Plaza library users are encouraged to visit one of our other branches.

The entertainment precinct, part of the Plazas $370 million redevelopment, is expected to be completed by May and will also feature fully renovated cinemas, a cluster of restaurants, a tavern and a food court.

For more on the citys libraries, access the online catalogue, or to book holiday programs, visit www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/libraries or the Wyndham City Libraries page on Facebook.

Hobsons Bay council will spend at least $16 million over the next 15 years to combat the effects of climate change from Williamstown to Altona.

Sherry Clarke, infrastructure and city services director, told last weeks council meeting this was a conservative estimate.

In June, crashing waves flooded homes along the Esplanade at Altona and Seaholme and wreaked damage at Williamstown.

And an analysis of 20,000 claims by insurer AAMI shows that Altona Meadows and Altona were in the top 10 Victorian suburbs hit worst by natural hazard events last financial year.

The council has received a $75,000 grant from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries to help upgrade the Seaholme foreshore, but this covers less than 10 per cent of the project cost.

We conservatively estimate that works in that stretch at Seaholme alone will be approximately $850,000, Ms Clarke said.

As well as that particular stretch, there are stretches between Williamstown and Altona that also require significant work.

We conservatively estimate that about $16 million will need to be spent on the foreshore over the next 15 years to address climate change issues.

[This includes] things like raising the seawall height and other matters to address erosion and rising sea levels and so forth.

Harry van Moorst, director of the Western Region Environment Centre, said international climate change experts had revised their predictions of sea level rises from one metre by the end of the century to one metre by 2050.

I think the cost is going to be far more than $1 million a year if we dont turn things around, Mr van Moorst said.

In a number of countries now, insurance companies are at the forefront of calling for renewables and things to actually limit the amount of climate change we see rather than to think we can fix it up after the event.

Mayor Colleen Gates said the council would lobby other levels of government to share the cost of priority projects on coastal Crown land, including Seaholme foreshore and seawall upgrades, and rock revetment at Apex Park in Altona and at Hatt and Cyril Curtain reserves in Williamstown.

Our strategic planning for the future and budget processes will help council to prioritise these works over the next 15 years.

Its not just a small, localised issue; its an issue for coastal communities around Australia.

Photographer Emmy Silvius believes its important to remain connected to nature.

The Wyndham Vale residents love for the great outdoors will be on display for everyone to see during her three-month exhibition at the Point Cook Community Centre.

Silvius is the third local resident to hold an exhibition at the new community art space, designed by the council to help emerging artists reach new audiences.

Her Inspired by Nature exhibition opens on Wednesday night and will feature images including landscapes, seascapes and animals.

Images for me are about being drawn into nature and having time to sit still and be quiet and immerse oneself in what is out there.

I believe that in this day and age there is a lot of technology and people are busy on computers or iPhones but sometime I wonder when we

are feeling down if it is because we have lost that connection with nature.

For myself, I know that I feel extremely uplifted when I am outdoors. I have a curious and adventurous nature. I like to explore and take the camera with me. Having the camera in hand and being able to take shots that appeal to me makes it more of a special experience, she said.

One day, I was driving up to Sydney and I saw this amazing sunrise. It was like a burning tree I just followed the light until I got the shot. Thats the hero for this exhibition.

Inspired by Nature is Emmy Silvius first exhibition. The exhibition is at the Point Cook Community Centre, 1 Cheetham Street, Point Cook until March 8.

But the soaring highs of life as a touring musician came crashing down one day in 2003, when he was in the US with Little River Band.

Our tour manager came up to me and said, I think you should call home, he said.

My mother had been diagnosed with leukaemia and was told that if it hadnt been detected shed have died within two weeks.

Over the next two years I spent a lot of time with her, watching her go through treatments, remissions and disappointments. But I couldnt ignore a nagging feeling that more could have been done.

This experience, and his mothers death, provided the spark for his new career as an oncology massage specialist for cancer patients, which helps alleviate anxiety, nausea, fatigue, pain and the side effects of their treatments.

People with cancer are vulnerable and typically have very low energy levels, Reither said. But oncology massage is gentle and takes into account swelling, pain and the emotional and physical struggles they often go through.

Ive performed for massive crowds all around the world and its great fun, but that buzz doesnt compare to the satisfaction I get from helping someone living with cancer.

Mr Reither provides treatments at Wyndham Natural Medicine Clinic in Hoppers Crossing and is also available for home visits. For details visit www.oncologymassagetraining.com.au.

    19 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 10, 2014

Motivational stickers inspiring people to be physically active have been placed on footpaths around Wyndham.

The stickers, a Wyndham council project, are designed to keep health and fitness in the front of peoples minds when theyre out and about in the community.

They feature three key messages walking one kilometre takes only 15 minutes and satisfies half your daily exercise requirements; encouraging people to join exercise classes at Wyndhams community centres; and encouraging people to borrow pedometers from the citys libraries.

Stickers are also being used to promote safe walking and cycling routes for children travelling to and from Wyndhams schools.

Statistics show more than 40 per cent of Wyndham adults and 88 per cent of the citys 13 to 17-year-olds dont get enough physical activity, with childrens physical activity rates below the state average.

Wyndham councillor Bob Fairclough said the stickers were an ideal way to remind people that small changes could make a big difference.

Taking 15 minutes out of your day for some physical activity is not that hard, he said.

It could be a matter of taking walking shoes to work and getting out and about during your lunch break or parking further away from your bus stop or train station than you might normally do, he said.

    Dear Resident

It is with great disappointment to learn there are no new suburbs in Lalor that have been added to the latest NBN rollout plan.

The maps just released by NBN Co show our area will be stuck with poor broadband quality and access until at least 2016.

This is despite Malcolm Turnbull promising that areas that had the poorest broadband like Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing, Little River and Laverton would get the NBN first.

In addition to Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing, Little River and Laverton, large areas of Werribee, Wyndham Vale, Tarneit, Truganina and Werribee South will also miss out.

The NBN provision that is available in Lalor was commenced under the previous Labor Government.

The Abbott Government won the election promising everyone would have the NBN by the next election. They lied.

According to these reports, less than a half of all Australian households will have the NBN by the time of the next election.

This Government has lied about health funding, lied about education funding, lied about cutting the pension, lied about cutting the ABC and SBS and they have lied about the NBN.

For more information on the Abbott Governments broken promises visit www.abbottslies.com.au

If you have any broadband problems please do not hesitate to contact my office.

    Yours sincerely

If the Werribee police station were a private dwelling its owners would be taken to court by Werribee council. But because it is a government building, policemen risk their lives in it daily, says Cr Ted Dowling. Cr Dowling was commenting on a council report that said the station was over-crowded, a fire hazard and lacked ventilation.

Whats you connection to the local community? My family and I have lived in Hoppers Crossing for the past seven years. Ive been a local civil celebrant for nearly six years conducting weddings, naming ceremonies and vow renewals.

I became a celebrant after going to a lot of bad weddings which were let down by the celebrants. Now I enjoy making peoples individual wedding days memorable in a good way.

I also helped start Getting Married Here, a bridal group for Wyndham which brides can use to find local services for their weddings and where business owners can network to help keep local business thriving in the area and enrich the local community.

Ive volunteered at Wilmington Kindergarten in the past and been secretary at the kinder for a year and treasurer another year.

What do you like about your neighbourhood? There are so many great places to go, especially for a wedding, such as having a ceremony beside Werribee River.

We have everything we need here even before the plaza doubles! Its important to support small businesses rather than just big chain stores as it helps keep that country-town feeling.

MY WYNDHAMHoppers Crossing civil celebrant Amber Kennedy loves bringing people together, writes Rebecca Miller.

What would you change? The perception we have of ourselves. Locals should embrace what we have in Wyndham, such as the river, parks and gardens because the area has plenty to offer.

We need to make sure infrastructure such as kindergartens, schools and hospitals keeps up with population growth.

These things should be built before new houses so new residents have the services they need when moving in.

Whats your favourite eatery or place to get coffee?Wyndham Cache is a gorgeous place for coffee and a cheesecake.

Nara Thai has amazing food and lovely staff.

When our family come from interstate to visit they are amazed by the variety of food and quality restaurants we have in Wyndham.

How do you spend your downtime?Ive had picnics with my family at the You Yangs, which is a beautiful spot. We enjoy riding our bikes around Wyndham and spending time at the wetlands at Alamanda estate in Point Cook as theres a good playground for the kids, and we like having breakfast at the nearby caf.

Within a hop, step and jump of the train station and Werribee Plaza, this house on about 1583 square metres a rare size in the heart of Hoppers is perfectly fine for a smaller family. But the block, with schools, parks, restaurants and child care within a 1.7-kilometre radius, lends itself to development and/or subdivision, subject to council approval. The house has three bedrooms with robes, served by a single bathroom. The carpeted lounge room has a wall of windows, an archway in an exposed brick wall and a ceiling fan. The galley-style kitchen has timber-trimmed cabinetry, wall oven and dishwasher. And ducted heating takes the sting out of winter. Out back, theres a stack of room, with sweeps of lawn rimmed by rock-edged garden beds. A concrete driveway heads under a four-vehicle carport to a double garage.

A first-timer on the market, this house on about 1509 square metres has all the ingredients for a great year-round seaside lifestyle. Within an amble of the beach and fast-developing Wyndham Harbour marina it has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a study. The lounge room is a cosy spot during winter, with its fireplace under a period-style mantelpiece; polished floorboards and classy window dressings make it an elegant room. The family-meals area (also with floorboards) has a wood heater and a split-system takes care of summer heat when cooling sea breezes dont quite cut it. The big kitchen has loads of Tasmanian ash cupboards, walk-in pantry and a dishwasher, and theres another living area upstairs. A wraparound verandah is a huge bonus and the enormous backyard has development potential (subject to council approval) and scope to add a pool or sheds.

Held in the highest regard within the residential building community, the awards have grown to become the states most distinguished housing awards program. HIA Victorian executive director Gil King congratulated the winners.

Its difficult to come up with new

The judging criteria of the award include: Customer service policy Communication Research and development Customer service levels Customer satisfactionCarlisles executive director John

Its hard to know what to enthuse about the most at this rather special property in Sanctuary Lakes estate. It could be the unfettered views of Skeleton Creek and wetland reserve in the foreground and Port Phillip Bay beyond. Perhaps its the glorious ozone tang of the sea wafting on the gentle breeze. Or maybe its the interior luxury, embodied by a show-stopping chandelier that spirals from the top floors ceiling and metaphorically points to a stunning jarrah staircase.

Theres a lot to like about this spread: a lavish, yet unpretentious, world beyond the chic double-door entry.

Unstinting in terms of room sizes, the house is replete with aspirational goodies:

Caesarstone, jarrah floorboards and trims, 2pac cabinetry finishes, 3-metre ceilings throughout, bifolds to outdoor areas, double glazing throughout, a usable balcony and a genuine butlers pantry. Colour palette? Crisp white walls, soft-grey carpet and floor tiles, white timber blinds, rich jarrah.

Once the eye candy of the chandelier has been absorbed, the ground floor opens up around the staircase. To one side, theres a sitting room with two-way gas log fire flanked by open shelves this is the winter room.

On the other side, theres a study (or fifth bedroom) and a huge, ultra-snazzy laundry with enclosed powder room; this has unfillable storage and provides

access to one of the garages which has a tiled-floor, as does the double garage on the opposite side.

Then comes the vast living hub with totally flexible room arrangement options, with one part sharing the aforementioned gas log fire, flanked by glass-fronted display cabinets. The kitchen is all class with soft-close drawers, a DeLonghi 900mm cooker with stainless-steel splashback, and bifold servery windows to the undercover pergola at the back (hello, sea views). The butlers pantry is the jewel: storage galore, stone benches and Asko dishwasher (and sink, of course).

Upstairs, four bedrooms and a powder room range along a carpeted landing which

has bifold doors to a large, tiled balcony fenced in glass. Its from here that, on a clear day, Eureka Tower can be spotted and the impact of the 180-degree water views is best experienced.

Every bedroom has a walk-in robe and an en suite, the one designated as guest with a spa. The main bedroom has bifold doors to the balcony (sea breeze anyone?) and a very large en suite with double shower and enclosed toilet.

Ducted heating and cooling, security alarm (including front door keypad), low-maintenance landscaping and side double gates are other treats in a very stylish goodie bag.
