A brutal bashing in Wyndham Vale last month has triggered a fundraising campaign that encapsulates Wyndhams strong community spirit.

Josh Lim, 23, and an 18-year-old were set upon by six men allegedly wielding weapons on the night of February 18 as they raced to the aid of a female teenager being harassed by the group.

While the other person escaped with only minor injuries, Josh remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Fundraiser for bash victimWerribee Crime Investigation Unit

has conrmed that seven men have been interviewed in relation to the assault and that police investigations are continuing.

Point Cook resident Elizabeth Burns was touched by Joshs story, so launched a campaign to raise money for his family. She said she had no connection with him or his family but could imagine the struggles they were facing.

It was playing on my mind the day aer the attack, Ms Burns said. I thought, Ive got to do something to help his family, but I dont know what.

She said the nancial struggle that came with

her own health battles helped her decide. I struggled nancially when I was going through chemotherapy for Hodgkin Lymphoma, she said.

e bills dont stop.If we can raise some money to li the

nancial burden so the family can spend as much time as possible with Josh, thats one less thing they have to worry about.

e funds will help with medical bills, rehab hoping he gets to that point and any changes that need to be made to the family home.

e campaign hopes to raise to $10,000. As of yesterday it had raised almost $3000.

I ask that the community put themselves in the shoes of Joshs parents, Ms Burns said.

We need to try and help them spend as much time with their son as they can.

Right now, they just dont know whats going to happen whether hes going to make it or not.

Ms Burns said the family of the teenager targeted in the attack had gone into hiding.

eyre petried theyve gone into hiding and theyre never coming back, Ms Burns said.

Its a small sign and people come in for breakfast in the morning and dont see it, Mr Haddara said. ey should at least put bigger signs there.

Anand Luhar, who runs grocery store Patel Brothers, said he was considering relocating once his lease runs out next year.

Parking woes are still hitting hard in Watton Street, according to traders who say loading zones in front of their businesses are driving customers away or at least the nes are.

ey say signs are few and far between, and customers have started getting ned for parking for as little as ve minutes to grab a coee.

Between 7am and 10am, Monday to Friday, two loading zones, on either side of Watton Street between Wedge and Bridge streets, knock out eight car parking spaces on one side

of Watton Street and six spots on the other side.

Parking in a loading zone carries a $152 ne.Wyndham council claims the zones have

been there for a long time, but traders say there have been no issues with them until recently.

Traders want the council to make signs more prominent and specically colour the loading bays to alert drivers.

Watton Cafe owner Mohammed Haddara said the zones were in eect during the cafes busiest time, which was bad for business.

Mr Luhar said at least three customers in recent weeks had complained to him about being ned for parking in the loading zones.

eres restaurants along here where diners can come aer 5.30pm and park for three hours, but people struggle to get parking here during the day.

Wyndham council did not respond to Star Weeklys questions about the Watton Street loading zones, including why the zones were in that location; how many drivers had been ned in the zones since they were put in place; and the perceived lack of signage.

    Loading zones ramp up nes

Protective services ocers (PSOs) will start patrolling Wyndhams new V/Line stations at Tarneit and Wyndham Vale from next week.

e PSOs will patrol train platforms, carparks and station surrounds from 6pm until aer the last train every night.

e Wyndham stations are among six that will start getting PSOs next week; Keilor Plains, Victoria Park, Murrumbeena and Auburn stations are the others.

e new security means all Wyndhams stations will have a police presence aer dark. Werribee and Hoppers Crossing were among the rst stations to get PSOs in 2012, while Williams Landing received them in April 2013.

e rollout coincides with a Victorian Auditor-Generals report into public safety on Victorias trains which found that while PSOs boosted perceptions of safety on Melbournes train network at night, it was unable due to the way Victoria Police collects data to determine if their presence had had an impact on crime.

e full value of the PSO program is yet to be realised, the report states.

Victoria Polices systems and processes for recording crime at train stations do not require police members to record the name of the station where a crime was committed. Consequently, 13 per cent of the oences recorded at stations since 2010 were not attributable to a particular station. is means it is not possible to accurately assess the impact of PSOs, as its not possible to compare the crime rates at a particular station before and aer PSO deployment.

e Werribee River Trail was ooded with runners at the weekend as 700 people joined in the Wyndham Rotary fun run.

Brett Ellis, of Bacchus Marsh, took the title in the 10-kilometre run, nishing in 32 minutes and 59 seconds. Werribees Lori Fraser (43 minutes, 56 seconds) earned bragging rights for the women.

Werribee Hockey Club was named winner of the corporate challenge, elding 32 competitors across a range of events.

River run draws a crowd for kidsRunners and walkers set off on the Wyndham Rotary fun run; (inset) Lori Fraser nishes rst among female participants. (Luke Hemer)

Wyndham Rotarys Max Coster said the number of entrants was up 17 per cent on last year, which went against a trend of declining participation in runs throughout Melbourne.

Mr Coster said the club had set itself a target of improving community health through engaging local people, and the fun runs high turnout showed the goal was achieved.

Citizens of Wyndham are getting o the couch and taking to gyms, walking and running, he said.

e Wyndham Rotary fun run is a fundraiser for the Royal Childrens Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Mr Coster said the exact amount was still being determined, but he expected about $20,000 to have been raised. e fun run has raised more than $60,000 for the hospital over nine years.

A swimming program in Werribee is aimed at teaching refugees and newly arrived migrants to swim in a bid to cut drownings in Australian waterways.

Operating out of Swim 4 All in Werribee, the program is teaching Western English Language School Werribee campus students water basics. irty-nine students aged ve to 14 are taking part in the 10-lesson program.

Swim 4 All owner and manager Natalie Clarke says the focus is on teaching children to get in and out of the pool, how to oat, how to exit water, and to never swim alone.

We are quite visual in what we teach, Ms Clarke said. Its about teaching them basic safety skills and condence. e kids just love it. eyre always so excited to get in the water and have these massive smiles on their face.

Western English Language School teacher Alison McQuade said teaching the students how to swim had many benets.

Swimming lessons are not just a valuable life skill, she said. For young people growing up in Australia, its such an important part of being socially included.

Life Saving Victoria multicultural projects manger David Holland said newly arrived migrants and refugees were over-represented in drowning statistics.

From July 1, 2014, to June 30 last year, 271 people died in Australian waterways, including rivers, creeks, lakes and dams.

Mr Holland said that more than 20 per cent of drowning deaths involved culturally and linguistically diverse people.

Oen aquatics are a low priority in these peoples nations so education on this sort of thing takes a back-seat, he said.

Programs like this exist to oer them that education.

Number plate thes are on the rise in Wyndham, making up more than half of all recent thes from motor vehicles.

Acting Inspector Damien Madden said in one week alone last month, 25 number plate thes were recorded, accounting for 52 per cent of all thes from motor vehicles.

Acting Inspector Madden said oenders were using stolen number plates to commit other crimes, including petrol thes.

We havent seen it [number plate the] that

from motor cars. More than 200 cars were broken into across Wyndham in January, with phones, wallets, satellite navigation systems and sunglasses among the most pilfered items.

Acting Inspector Madden said thes from motor vehicles were trending down slightly from the beginning of this year but were still

high before, he said. Its really becoming a problem for us and for the people having their plates stolen.

is is still by far the biggest issue for us to get 25 reports [in a week] around number plate the is really frustrating for the owner of the car but also for the ow-on eect around the use of those plates in other oences.

e best thing the community can do is swap their number plate screws over for the one-way screws.

e spike comes at the same time police are tackling a higher than usual number of thes

happening at a much higher rate than usual. Its tracking a little bit less than what it was last month, but not substantially dierent.

Acting Inspector Madden said train station carparks across the city had been targeted, and cars parked in residential streets and driveways were also being broken into.

Crime prevention ocer Craig McDonald urged residents to remove valuables from their cars and ensure their cars were locked.

If you remove the temptation, you remove yourself from being a potential victim, Leading Senior Constable McDonald said.

Number plate theft still rife To get 25 reports around number plate theft is really frustrating - Damien Madden

ese cyclists will be taking the ultimate scenic route next week when they ride 1000 kilometres between Werribee and Bendigo to raise funds to develop a cancer support house in Werribee.

Twenty-nine riders and six support crew will take o from Hoppers Lane in Werribee this Saturday and spend a week riding to Geelong then along the Great Ocean Road and up through Hamilton and Horsham before arriving at the Rotary District 9800 Conference in Bendigo.

e fundraiser has been organised by RoCan, a trust established through Williamstown Rotary Club to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and help with research into the cause and cure of the disease.

Ride for a Cause organiser Yvonne Moon has spent 16 years championing RoCan aer her lifelong friend Anna Buckley died from ovarian cancer.

Ms Moon is keen to raise about $90,000 through the ride to help fund a cancer support

house along the lines of Ronald McDonald House.

e facility, which Ms Moon hopes can be located along Hoppers Lane (near the Werribee Mercy and soon-to-be St Vincents Private Werribee hospitals), will provide overnight accommodation for families whose loved ones are undergoing treatment.

ere is such a need in Werribee and in the west, Ms Moon said.

She also wants to fund an early detection test for ovarian cancer, adding that many women are under the misguided impression that the disease can be picked up by pap tests.

The question posed on social media was: What are the rst three things you think of when I say the word Werribee? Kevin and Ann Harrington are the new owners of the Quest Apartments in Werribee. Kevin posted this question on his Facebook page and I shared it to see the response. Surprise, surprise, some things never change, as the Western Treatment Plant aka the poo farm, went straight to number one with a bullet.

e smell, hold your nose, and other more colourful descriptions were quite popular too.

I remember in the mid eighties there were days when the treatment plant was very much on the nose, but contrary to popular opinion, there is no smell these days. e new name says it all. It is a treatment plant where raw sewage becomes high quality recycled water. e plant produces 40 billion litres per year.

e other major negative for Werribee is the perception that most of the population are unemployed bogans. On the positive side, the Open Range Zoo is well known, as is the Werribee Mansion and, to a lesser extent,

the State Rose Garden. Shadowfax Winery remains our hidden treasure, as is Werribee South Beach, but that might change for the latter with the opening of Wyndham Harbour.

Regular readers will be aware that I believe the name Werribee is a major part of the problem. ere is only one way to change peoples views, and that is to show them the 2016 city of Wyndham. Star Weekly runs a weekly feature called My Wyndham that could easily become the blueprint for a campaign across television, social media, cinemas everywhere.

Get Merv Hughes, Russell and Lauryn Mark and successful business people, such as Chris Byrne from Westpoint Ford or Peter or Jim Hudson, talking about the area. Show people the treatment plant and the incredible wildlife that lives there. Birdwatchers come from all over the world to see the tens of thousands of birds there.

We have a lot more going for us as a city than most people think. To steal a famous line its time.

Kevin Hillier says its time to showcase the real Werribee

we provide, Cr Brittan said. They can understand why we have to make

    these really tough decisions.

will take effect for all Victorian councils fromJuly 1.

A report from the community panels found:Some residentswant the council to staywithinthe rate cap for at least the first year to see whateventuates. Others said they would accept aslightly higher rate rise for services to remain the same.Residents want the council to look foreciencies and alternative revenue sources before looking to increase rates above the CPI.Residents believe the council should handback services that should or could be the state or federal governments responsibility.

The council will use the feedback andrecommendations gleaned from the panels to guide its own decision-making in managingthe impact of rate capping.

Councils have until March 31 to submit applications to the Essential ServicesCommission seeking rate rises that go beyond the CPI cap. Wyndham is one of 21 Victoriancouncils that have indicated they may apply for a rate increase above the cap.

But Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby said the council had yet to vote on whether it would definitely go ahead with itsapplication.

e rst stage of the $440 million Wyndham Harbour Marina was opened to the public last weekend during a two-day festival.

ousands ocked to the marina to enjoy a weekend full of activities, including power boat handling lessons, stand up paddle boarding, jet-ski yboard demonstrations, a beach race and the Wyndham Harbour Fishing Classic.

e harbour development features the only marina between Williamstown and Geelong, and eventually it will have 1000 berths and storage for up to 390 boats.

Once complete, it will be the largest marina in Victoria, opening up parts of Port Phillip Bay never before accessible to swimmers and boating enthusiasts. It will also be the new home of the Werribee South Coast Guard.

Project director Sonya Miller said she

was thrilled the harbour had reached this milestone. It was fantastic, we were blessed with wonderful weather and it was amazing to see all those boats sparkling on the water, Ms Miller said.

It was very satisfying, aer all these years [I was] having ashbacks to what it was all those years ago, when it was really just a dirt track with lots of weeds along the foreshore.

Ms Miller said construction of the Lighthouse apartments was due to start this year and a new land release with 130 blocks has just been released. Wyndham Harbour Marina was rst proposed by the state government in 1983. Developers secured the land in 2003.

Almost 1000 Wyndham workers were injured at their workplace in 2015.

New statistics from WorkSafe show that 973 injury claims were made by workers in Wyndham in the past calendar year, up slightly from 945 claims in 2014.

e bulk of claims were made by workers in the transport, postal, warehousing, manufacturing and wholesale trade industries, with many injuries occurring as a result of poor

e campaign includes a series of television, radio, print and online advertisements that show the consequences for workers, employers and families when there is a workplace injury or fatality.

A WorkSafe spokeswoman said that while injury claims in the Wyndham region were lower than in 2011, it was concerning to see a marginal increase in recent years.

As our new public awareness campaign shows, a workplace injury or fatality aects everyone, not just the person involved but their

manual handling, slips, trips, falls, or a worker being hit by a moving object.

Incidents included a worker at Werribee who was shot in the foot with a nail gun; another Werribee worker who sustained a broken leg and lacerations aer tripping over material le on the ground; and a Truganina worker who fell into a trench when the edge gave way, breaking a bone in his le ankle.

WorkSafe is calling on employers to make safety their top priority in their new campaign, dubbed Really Bad Day.

family, friends, colleagues, and the business itself, the spokeswoman said.

Our message is that prevention is the key. Its vitally important that employers do everything they can to prevent the kind of scenarios seen in this campaign.

State Finance Minister Robin Scott said WorkSafes new campaign highlighted the tragic consequences of serious workplace injuries and sent a powerful message to employers about the need to protect the safety of their workers.

    Workplace injury claims rise

Two Wyndham women are on a mission to raise awareness about the mental health issues faced by middle-aged men.

Point Cooks Linda Kensington recently took on the role of acting chief executive of On the Line, a western suburbs company that provides remote support and counselling services to people in crisis. Hoppers Crossing resident Kim McAliney has also joined the team as acting chief nance ocer.

Ms Kensington said it was great to have a crisis service in the heart of the west, providing national support services, ranging from telephone help lines to call-back services.

Its an absolute privilege to be working with a nationwide organisation like On the Line.

Among its services is MensLine a 24/7 counselling service for men from all walks

of life. Ms Kensington described the rates of suicide among middle-aged men as concerning.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that men aged between 45 and 49 have the second highest rate of suicide aer men aged over 85, she said.

Ms Kensington said relationship issues or separation were the reasons behind most calls, but family law issues, work-related stress, job loss, and challenges accessing services also caused men to seek help.

Jackson Fairchild, a senior clinical educator with On the Line, said men were oen less likely to talk about their feelings or seek professional help, but they need to know help is available.

ere was also a four-year-old child in the vehicle, she said.

Miraculously, no one was injured and both vehicles received only minor damage.

First Constable Gillard said the womans car was impounded for 30 days and her learner permit instantly cancelled.

Cops, ambos, reys and other emergency services workers are gearing up for the annual Victoria Police and Emergency Games next month.

e games, now in their 34th year, are expected to be the biggest yet with more than 3000 competitors expected to take part across Victoria.

Among the participants will be Werribee paramedics Karinda and Hayley (pictured).

Karinda will feature in basketball and Hayley in swimming and soccer.

Hayley said the games were a nice way to have fun with colleagues.

Karinda added: Its a great way to build relationships outside the work environment with other emergency services and law enforcement workers.

Wyndham will host a pair of games events. e equestrian competition will be held at the National Equestrian Centre in Werribee and bowls will be played at WynCity in Point Cook.

At the launch of the games late last month, Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett said the event provided an opportunity for law enforcement and emergency services workers to spend time away from the more serious side of their work.

e games give our everyday lifesavers a chance to take some time out to enjoy themselves away from the pressure of their jobs, she said.

e games will start on Friday, April 8.

Wyndham council wants feedback on its plans to prevent gridlock and trac chaos getting worse as the city grows.

Its new strategy sets out ideas for improving the transport system and the council wants residents to have their say.

A main focus of the strategy is cutting the dependency on cars by improving public transport and oering cycling and walking options. It sets out nine transport targets to be achieved by 2040, including:

It is important to note that most of the currently congested roads in Wyndham are managed by VicRoads, it states.

erefore Wyndham will need to work with and advocate to state and commonwealth governments for the funding required to upgrade these declared roads.

e road network is carrying more vehicles than ever before, and many sections of the road network have reached capacity.

In addition, some local roads designed for lower trac volumes are performing an arterial function, it states.

Ensuring that 70 per cent of Wyndhamsworking population has the potential to work in Wyndham;Tripling the number of walking and cyclingtrips;Cutting peak road travel times by 30 per cent;and Eliminating city parking congestion.

e report, put together aer community consultation, anticipates that many of Wyndhams transport improvements will needsupport and funding commitments from all levels of government.

e road crossings over the Werribee [rail] line are also constraining the road network, as they are at or over capacity.TransportportfolioholderGlennGoodfellow

said improved transport was a priority.e message came through loud and

clear from the community that transport is the number one pressing issue and that we need a strategy to deal with the needs of this rapidly expanding community,CrGoodfellowsaid.

e integrated transport strategy is out for consultation until March 31.

March is shaping up to be a very busy month here in Wyndham with number of opportunities for family outings with an array of events taking place within our community. We commenced the month with the Fromage a Trois Festival at Werribee Park, whilst this weekend the Cultural Diversity (Soccer) Cup designed to welcome new arrivals to Wyndham will take place at Galvin Park, Parklands Grove Werribee on Saturday and on Sunday the Manor Lakes Cricket club will be promoting Harmony in Cricket through their Wyndham T20 Cup for 8-12year olds. Both events are an excellent example of community sports and the important role that they play in shaping our community. The following weekend sees Wyndham celebrating Weerama, Holi and the Multicultural Festival while on 20 March, Little River Primary School is offering locals the chance to visit and explore Little River historical township when it hosts the Little River Country Fair. The month is then rounded off with the Easter celebrations from 25-28 March. We are truly spoilt for choice this month and I encourage residents to get out and enjoy these events. Whats changed over the years?

What hasnt changed is probably more the point. I grew up on a market garden it was a small country town. Werribee used to close down at 6pm. Nowadays its connected to Melbourne by lights. What do you love most about the town?

Its very familiar to me. Its a positive community, one thats moving forward as a community. To be a part of the forward planning for our future our childrens future is very exciting. Its also a reasonably safe place with good schools, great education; healthcare is getting better.

Its retro central in the form of armchairs, sofas and more.

And retro, too, in the form of the kitchen and serving area, for which purposes a vintage caravan has been pressed into service.

Given the tight space situation, its no surprise the food line-up is equally tight and also light. ats ne by us on the way there we mused over possibilities such as Somalian, Chinese BBQ meats and dumplings, but the truth is were just not THAT hungry.

wyndhamwomenDr Jamie ChumMichelle ChickModern MedicalHarcourts WyndhamEnglish, Mandarin and Malay-speaking Dr Jamie Chum had been practising in Adelaide but moved to Melbourne, toddler in tow, to join her husband, Aaron.

She then practised at clinics in Richmond and St Kilda, Aireys Inlet and Lorne, then Truganina.

Just four weeks ago, Dr Chum joined the general practitioner team at Modern Medical in Wyndham Vale. And shes looking forward to developing her range of interests to match the needs of her new community.

Before becoming a GP by personal choice, says Dr Chum, I worked in various surgical elds, with a special interest in ear, nose and throat surgery (ENT). But I found general practice was what drew me and gave me so many interesting and challenging areas in which to work.

Im looking forward to meeting specic health needs in, for example, womens, mens, childrens and GLBTI groups. Im also a HIV s100 prescriber of antiretroviral therapy.

She loves working with all kinds of people and families, across all age groups.

Every person who comes through my door has a dierent requirement. I believe that, as GPs, we have a responsibility to empower all patients to take care of their health. It will be a focus of mine as I interact with families and everyone else. Taking time to explain how each patient needs to do their bit to get the best possible outcomes can help spur positive action towards optimal health.

The clinic Dr Chum has been welcomed into has a focus on improving chronic medical problems, and patients can access Medicare initiatives for subsidised Allied Health assistance. ECGs are carried out on site and the clinic is a Healthscope (pathology) collection centre.

Working in the real estate eld brings many challenges and rewards and Michelle Chick is a woman who readily conquers the former and shares many of the latter. And shes been doing it for 14 years, the past two with Harcourts Wyndham.

Shes received industry accolades, such as being number one agent in both selling and listing for Harcourts (Victoria-wide) for two years running (2014-15) and now stands in the top 10 Harcourts agents Australia-wide. And, Michelle says, my team and I are on track to take it out this year as well.

Michelle has taken an innovative, proactive approach to her work by establishing and leading, under the name Team Chick, her crew of four. She understands the art of playing to strengths and has co-opted a trio who know their stu as well as she knows hers.

Firstly, theres Nicole, my business partner of nearly four years, explains Michelle. She acts as a support person with both vendors and buyers. Then theres Mathew, my buyers agent for the past year, who helps buyers connect with the right property. The nancial whiz is Doreen, my broker for three years, and she helps clients with on-site nance.

What this translates to is that each of our clients eectively has four people working for them. I know our vendors and buyers appreciate and respond very well to this because about 75 per cent of my business is from repeat business and referrals. Thats rewarding.

Real estate agents are on the frontline of the property market. They deal with buyers and vendors face to face. As such, we need to love the industry, be prepared to be bold and be able to relate well to people. And thats what my team is all about.

It must have received just that little extra sprinkle from the makeover fairy because this place positively gleams with contemporary dcor and outdoor spaces are designed with a good dollop of panache.

Dove-grey wall paint throughout is accented with white, pairing beautifully with hardwood oorboards in most rooms. Timber blinds are white, as are roman blinds and two sets of multi-paned french doors (white frames) add their glam. Its all very harmonious and tres chic.

The lounge room, near the front door, is

a lovely, light-lled all-seasons room, with a wood heater in tiled surrounds beneath a modern mantelpiece.

It links with the meals zone and a kitchen decked out in classic black and white. It has a great walk-in pantry, vinyl-wrap cabinetry, white-tiled splashback and the shiny appliances. Placing french doors to connect kitchen preparation with outdoor areas is a masterstroke.

Three big bedrooms (two with storage) include the main also with french doors to a covered deck. Because lovely gardens

beckon, a morning coffee here will taste even better. Bedrooms share a large bathroom where deep steps give theatrical entry to a partially glassed-in sunken tub below dual showerheads. A glass-brick backdrop admits light and storage closets in here keep fresh towels near.

The backyard is quite a treat. Lovely mature specimen trees (a Japanese maple for one) dot manicured lawns and a long wooden deck stretches towards a stylish pavilion housing a heated spa. A built-in barbecue in here faces out to a crazy-paved

area just one more relaxation focal point. A cute outbuilding in the garden is a

potential man-cave, playroom or even a change-room. And theres even a chicken coop and vegie patch.

Finishers are ducted heating, evaporative cooling, a garage with power connection and a location within an amble of Watton Street eateries and shops and practically around the corner from freeway entry.
