A drink-driver, found to be almost ve times over the legal limit, is expected to be charged aer attacking a passenger of another vehicle in a road rage incident.

Police expect to charge on summons the driver, a 34-year-old Werribee man, with serious oences including assault, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and drink-driving.

e incident occurred last week when the man was involved in a two-car collision on Tarneit Road.

e driver allegedly got out of his vehicle and

Road rage caught on lm pushed the driver of the other car in the chest before eeing the scene.

Police were able to track him down, with the help of a quick-thinking passenger from the other car who had taken a photo of the man and his car at the crash site.

Wyndham highway patrols Sergeant Graeme Crouch said the photo of the suspect and his car was shown to ocers aer they arrived at the scene. ey eventually traced the driver back to a property in Werribee.

[At the property] they found a vehicle matching not only in damage but displaying consistent damage to what was alleged to have occurred on Tarneit Road, Sergeant Crouch

said. e man accused of driving and the assault, who was in the picture, was standing next to the car.

e man underwent a breath test and recorded a blood-alcohol reading of .241.

Victoria Police is concerned about the prevalence of road rage incidents across the western suburbs.

Last year, Wyndham road policing adviser Senior Sergeant Damien Madden said an investigation across Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay had found tailgating to be one of the major factors, with some drivers deliberately ramming other vehicles.

    It [the investigation] found incidents

predominantly occurred during the aernoon peak on weekdays with the major hotspot in Wyndham at Dohertys Road in Laverton North, he said. A multitude of issues can lead to road rage, but road congestion plays a part.

With a growing number of road users resorting to using smartphones and dashboard cameras to record incidents, Senior Sergeant Madden warned people to be cautious.

Although this information can be helpful for police, its a decision each person needs to make according to individual circumstances, he said. We dont want people to potentially endanger themselves or others [by taking photos or recording video footage].

A pair of animal lovers behind a Point Cook charity that has saved the lives of more than 50 cats and kittens are hoping other locals will get behind their mission.

Purrs of Point Cook was hatched last November after Karin Dew responded to a call for a carer for a cat and her four kittens that were facing euthanisation.

What began as two foster carers Ms Dew and fellow founder Leah Singh and nine kittens has turned into 25 foster carers and about 50 felines.

Most of the cats and kittens we get have been surrendered by owners who are no longer able to continue caring for the animal. We also receive many who have been abandoned or are strays, Ms Dew said.

Before theyre listed for adoption they are placed with already-screened foster families where they are socialised, treated and given lots of love and play time. Thats how we get to know the animal and gure out who their ideal family will be.

All of the feline adoptees are vet- checked, vaccinated, wormed, ea- treated, microchipped and desexed before going to their new families, who are also screened. The adoption fee is $220, with a 30-day settling-in period.

A kaleidoscope of colour, music and dance was on display when Wyndhams Holi Mela Festival exploded into life at Werribee racecourselast Saturday.

More than 15,000 people attended the traditional Hindu celebration to signify the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere.

Aer a religious procession and bonre, the crowd threw dry powder and coloured water over one another in a celebration of life.

Organisers told Star Weekly they were overwhelmed by the support for the festival.

Entertainment was provided by 50 Bollywood dancers, 10 DJs playing music all aernoon and Dohl drummers, and there were plenty of childrens rides and

multicultural food on oer to delight the senses.

Festivals of South Asia secretary Hari Yellina said the festival was a huge success.ere was 10 hours of non-stop activity and nobody wanted to leave, he said.

We were surprised by the diversity of the crowd. It was great to see people from all dierent cultures having a great time together.

is years festival took on added signicance, with Dr Manjula OConnor, of the Australasian Centre for Human Rights and Health, leading an oath against family violence as part of the ongoing campaign to shine a light on the issue.

An average of nearly three parking nes a day were handed out at Werribee railway station last year.

Ocers issued 1054 nes to illegally parked vehicles at Werribee in 2014, dwarng the numbers for neighbouring stations at Hoppers Crossing (38) and Williams Landing (10).

A Public Transport Victoria spokesman said that despite Werribees high number of station nes, all railway station carparks across the metropolitan network were patrolled equally. In 2013 inspectors issued 1213 parking nes at Werribee station.

e level of demand for spaces at Werribee station has climbed to the point that commuters regularly park on garden beds, kerbs and footpaths once designated carparks are taken.

As reported by Star Weekly, Wyndham Star Weekly, Wyndham Star Weeklycouncil has promised to review parking restrictions around Werribee and Hoppers Crossing stations as growing numbers of commuters scramble to nd spaces in surrounding residential streets.

Parking restrictions are in place in streets around Hoppers Crossing station and those surrounding Werribee station, council chief executive Kerry ompson said.

Wyndham City intends to review the extent that commuter parking may have extended past the streets with these restrictions and consider options based on that review.

Any alterations to the parking situation around Hoppers Crossing and Werribee stations need to take into consideration that

the Regional Rail Link will operate from June this year.

While there have been calls to increase carparking at Wyndhams three railway stations, Public Transport Users Association president Tony Morton said capacity wasnt the only answer.

Individual railway station carpark spaces cost anywhere from $15,000 to $60,000, so this has to be weighed up against investing that money into services, he said.

We need a certain amount of carparks at railway stations, but the demand for spaces is so high they will continue to overow regardless of how many we create.

Mr Morton said improved connectivity and more frequent services were a better option.

People are sick of battling trac on Point Cook Road only to nd the carpark at Williams Landing full by 7am, he said.

If Melbourne is going to be a truly liveable city, we cant continue to drown in road congestion. We need a decent bus network running services every 40 or 60 minutes in Wyndham isnt good enough. Ideally, buses should be running every 10 minutes. And rather than turning a 15-minute trip into one which lasts more than an hour, they should follow a grid system along key arterial roads.

Wyndham has the second-highest school drop-out rates in the western suburbs, according to the latest report released by HealthWest.

e Population Health Data report, compiled from research conducted in the past ve years, compared school retention rates in Wyndham, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Melton.

Close to 14 per cent of 17-year-olds in Wyndham dropped out of school, a gure exceeded only by Meltons drop-out rate of 15.2.

Brimbanks rate of year-11 leavers was 9.3 per cent less than the state average of 10.5.

Year 10 to 12 public school retention rates in the western metropolitan region (82 per cent) were also lower than the northern region (92).

Wyndham [and Brimbank] had a notably higher proportion of early school leavers who were looking for work; and they had a higher proportion that went on to VET study, the report states.

While Wyndhams 15- to 19-year-olds were more likely than most to be working full-time and not studying (6.1 per cent) behind only Melton (6.4) they were also the second-least- likely to be fully engaged in work or study (20.7).

e state averages were 5.5 and 18.3, respectively.

e data published by HealthWest indicated that year 12s graduating in Wyndham were less likely than others in Victoria to attend

university the year aer leaving school (47.5 per cent). Just above ve per cent were employed full-time and 9.4 per cent part-time.

Almost seven per cent were looking for work in their rst year out of school.

Wyndham students recorded the highest rates of absenteeism in 2009, according to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. ey were followed closely by Melton students.

Wyndham had particularly high absenteeism gures for all secondary school years, the report stated.

Absenteeism peaked in year 9 for Wyndham students with an alarming average of 32.3 days away from school.

Wyndhams prep pupils were absent for 16.9 days a year.

Wyndhams absent days were lowest in year 1 and 2 (15.7), which was still higher than the state average (13).

In 2012, Wyndham and Brimbank had the highest number of children in the western region classed as developmentally vulnerable in terms of physical health, social and emotional development, language and communication skills.

Wyndham children were the least likely in the western region to be enrolled at a kindergarten, with only 86.9 per cent of four-year-olds attending, compared with the state average of 92.7 per cent.

Teen pregnancy was also about 25 per cent higher in Wyndham than the rest of the state. e Wyndham rate was 12.9 per 1000 women.

An iPhone plugged into a power adaptor has been blamed for a blaze which gutted a Werribee house last week, causing damage of more than $430,000.

Fire crews were called to Austin Street just aer 5pm on March 4, aer calls about smoke billowing from a house.

Werribee CFAs First Lieutenant Darryl Wells told Star Weekly that by the time they arrived, the weatherboard property was well alight.

Crews were forced to break into the house and, as they did, the intense blaze broke through a window.

Crews gained control aer about 15 minutes, although the re in the ceiling space continued to are up, Mr Wells said.

But with the arrival of a ladder platform, crews were able cut access holes in the iron roof and nally bring it under control.

On gaining entry to the rear of the house, they also saved the family cat.

Forty reghters including crews from Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Wyndham Vale and Corio, battled the blaze, which was traced back to the overheated power adaptor inside the house.

Nobody was home at the time.Mr Wells said the ve-hour operation was

hampered slightly by a water main that burst on nearby Market Road.

Wyndhams building boom has hit new heights with $1.4 billion in permits issued last year the second-highest amount of any Victorian municipality aer the City of Melbourne.

Data from the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) shows that building permit activity in Wyndham in 2014 surged 44 per cent to $1.4 billion. In 2013, the permits were valued at $955 million.

One of the states largest single-building permits was a $120 million permit for retail

e next most common type of permit was for garages, sheds, carports, verandahs, pools and other minor structures 1115 building permits for these structures.

e council issued 233 building permits for commercial and industrial building works and 78 for multiple dwellings. Fiy of these were two- or three-dwellings permits and six were for developments containing more than 10 dwellings.

In the 2013-14 nancial year, permits for 2472 houses were approved in Wyndham up 449 on 2012-13 but still less than half the record

building works at the Pacic Werribee centre in Hoppers Crossing.

VBA chief executive Prue Digby said that across Victoria, the value of reported building permits in 2014 was a record $26.9 billion, 11 per cent higher than the previous record four years ago.

Wyndham council chief executive Kerry ompson said there were 4186 building approvals in Wyndham in 2014 up from 3364 in 2013. is gure included 2720 building permits for single dwellings or 65 per cent of all permits, Ms ompson said.

high of 5285 in 2009-10. Housing Industry Association executive director Gil King said prospects for further growth across the sector were positive. Dwelling commencements in Victoria are forecast to rise for a second year in 2014-15 and while the forecast is for a decline over subsequent years, the overall level of activity is on track to remain historically healthy, Mr King said.

New-home building made a massive contribution to economic growth in the state last year, with particularly strong increases in new multi-unit dwelling construction.

Learner gets a lessonA learner driver will be charged on summons after running a red light and speeding in front of police in Hoppers Crossing on March 2. The 46-year-old Werribee man was rst seen by police on Derrimut Road driving a car with home-made registration plates and was pulled over after being allegedly more than 15km/h over the speed limit.

Drifter pulled into lineA 20-year-old St Albans man was one of ve drivers caught drifting when Wyndham police were called to reports of hoons in an industrial estate in Derrimut on March 2. The man was ned $741 and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. He will be summonsed to answer charges of careless driving and improper use of a motor vehicle.

Cultures play togetherTwelve soccer teams will come together for the sixth annual Cultural Diversity Cup tournament at Hoppers Crossing on Saturday. Well done, CFAWyndham council has presented Little River CFA with a mayoral recognition award for its newest reghting weapon, a 14,000-litre water tanker that rells re trucks more quickly.

The Verve in their biggest hit sang of a bittersweet symphony that is life and I felt that this week when one of our councillors actually admitted the $2 million Get Wyndham Moving campaign had failed to have the impact they had hoped.

I wont criticise them for having a go; Lord knows, its about time. But I am going to have a crack at them for being naive, arrogant and dismissive in the way they ran the campaign and the way they treated anyone who didnt think it was a great idea. It was a good idea. Not a great idea. It lacked any power and impact where it really mattered. For the most part it was ignored or dismissed by everyone in Spring Street and above.

e campaign was supported by only a very small percentage of Wyndham ratepayers, going by the petition numbers. In the end it became another lame failure and a waste of money.

We all know people are frustrated by railway crossings and the constant gridlock of trac. ats not a news ash. Parking,

too, is a problem, as my last few columns have highlighted. We all know what the problems are.

Councillors holding up signs at a railway crossing wont change any of this. We have four state ministers sitting in our backyard. Many tell me thats NOT a good thing, but the eternal optimist in me says it should be a great thing.

We voted these people in and, forget their political persuasion, they represent us. As I implored the councillors to do in last weeks column, so I do to our state and federal representatives. Be remembered as the people who made a dierence. Make a signicant contribution to impact the lives of your constituents. Any dill could sit in any of these roles and throw money around like a drunken sailor on a Friday night, as my dad used to say. But where is the vision for the future? Where is the plan to get in front of the problems rather than chase them from behind? Leaders lead, they do not follow. What we need right now is Leadership with a capital L. Its time for our sitting members to stand up and ght.

e campaign to boost Wyndham fell at, says Kevin Hillier

Just like the food inside our fridge, we all have a use-by-date.

ats the scenario posed by Elana Berton as part of her school project Life: e Milky Way,a short lm in which an animated milk carton, egg and a tub of yoghurt come to life.

e Werribee South resident has had her work selected to be part of Top Designs, a showcase of the best media, design, food and technology and engineering works from VCE students across the state, which opens at Melbourne Museum in Carlton on March 21.

Ms Berton said the message behind her lm was simple. We all have a use-by date and we have to use our shelf life wisely.

e lm begins with a shot of a fridge before we peer inside and see a milk carton, depicted like a tired, wrinkled old man with a walking stick, joined by an egg with stubble and a

walking tub of yoghurt. A closer look at the milk carton reveals a use-by date of yesterday. e next scene shows a man opening the fridge, smelling the carton and throwing it in the bin.

eres a lm called In Time where the characters have countdown clocks on their arms and they have to work to get enough minutes to make it through the day, Ms Berton said, explaining her concept.

As part of her VET media studies last year, the year 12 Geelong College student drew all of the sketches of the characters before using a computer program to give them movement.

Were studying animation and it was probably my weakest skill going into this, but because of that, I think I put more eort in, she said.

At just 15, Mark Reuben was the youngest-ever jockey and the following year he won the title of Indias leading apprentice.

For many years, he lived out of a suitcase travelling to the major racetracks of Mumbai, Calcutta, Hyderabad and Delhi, and racking up more than 1200 winners, including 20 group races and jockey premierships.

In India, horse racing is big business with grandstands and betting rings lled with high yers and industry moguls. Reuben says its an atmosphere unlike any other. In Australia, theres a lot of focus on attracting families, but in India its a place for the big gamblers to back horses and win money. All the bookmakers are on-course and the betting ring is like a sh market with the money ying around.

Aer meeting his wife, a one-time Miss India

Australia in 2007, Reuben moved to Australia two years later and worked to reignite his career. No one knew who I was, so I went far and wide to get opportunities. I was fortunate to ride trackwork for [trainer] David Hayes, including on [Melbourne Cup winner] Americain.

His luck ran out while he was riding at Hayess property in country Victoria. His mount crashed through a running rail and he badly broke his leg and hip. While still harbouring dreams of returning to the saddle, hes now forging a new career in real estate and is ambassador for the multicultural raceday at Werribee on March 28. At the turn of the 20th century, Werribee was a small, close-knit farming community.

During the course of World War I, more than 350 men from the area and surrounding suburbs were sent to the other side of the world to ght for their country and the British Empire.

In the Middle East and on the Western Front, about 60 of those soldiers would pay the ultimate price.

e Wyndham Anzac Project, launched last week, will detail the stories and the sacrices made by each of these men.

Led by a dedicated group of volunteers who have painstakingly sied through the archives, the accounts which are being collated online provide a fascinating insight into the lives and experiences of the troops on the frontline.

Before enlisting in the Australian Imperial

Force (AIF) in 1916, Henry (Harry) Delaney was a grocer with Comben and Co in Werribee.

A signaller, the 27-year-old was killed in action on the Somme, in France. With no known grave, he is commemorated at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.

An editorial in the Werribee Shire Banner reported that as a grocer his duties brought him in touch with the majority of local residents.

[With] two of his brothers having previously enlisted, he was never satised till he himself was in khaki and he sailed on the 3rd July, 1916, the day on which his brother [Edward] fell a victim to the enemys guns.

Werribees own claim to comedy fame, Kelly Fastuca, may have made it in New York but she hasnt forgotten her roots.

e young comic will take to the stage as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival later this month, bringing her relatable brand of funny back to home shores.

Fastucas one-hour set, I Need an Adult, will be at e Downstairs Lounge at the Grand Mercure Hotel from March 26.

e brand new stand-up show goes through her tumultuous coming-of-age adventures

. . . Fastuca moved to New York ve years ago knowing nobody and has survived two hurricanes, a polar vortex and a blizzard.

But from a sickness involving her rear end to meeting men on public transport, her life has been described as a hilariously twisted [and] brutally funny mess.

Killing time while waiting for the kids to nish their dance classes, swimming lessons or footy training is an experience with which every parent is familiar.

So a karate school in Tarneit has developed a plan to encourage parents to switch o their smart phones and get t with their children.

Working with Wyndham councils Healthy Together Wyndham team, Nippon-Den Kempo karate school at Tarneit Community Learning Centre is oering parents the opportunity to train with their children.

Council community well-being portfolio holder Bob Fairclough said the program was a fantastic way for parents to take an active role in their childrens health and tness.

is is a terric idea to encourage parents, who would otherwise be sitting or standing around, to get active alongside their children and become healthy role models for them, he said.

e karate school is also encouraging healthier food choices and providing information about better nutrition.

Nippon-Den Kempo was one of the recipients of the councils Healthy Together Grants, which support community initiatives to improve health across Wyndham.

Nutritionist Sandra Stephens, whose husband, Mark, is one of the schools instructors, was behind the idea.

We dont want the parents to be sitting around when they come to see their children train, so we are giving them the opportunity to

Get a kick out of being t

train alongside them, she said. You dont need any background in karate and you dont need to be super t. For those who dont like the idea of karate, we will also run some walk and talk groups.

is idea owed on from my own decision to try karate with my seven and eight-year-old sons. I thought that if I show them that while some things are dicult to do, you dont give up, you keep trying, it would give them more condence. We also want to oer healthy food at the tournaments the school runs and get away from the so drink and pizzas.

Once a term, we will hold cultural nights where parents can cook healthy food together from one of the many cultures represented at Nippon-Den Kempo.

Were getting the kids involved, too, through a better nutrition challenge. eyll each receive a food diary to record the fruit and vegies they eat each day, and therell be prizes for the winners.

For more information about the school, call Mark Stephens on 0407 255 128.

Healthy Together Wyndham is a joint initiative of Wyndham council and the state government. For more details, go to www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/residents/community/healthyandactive/healthytogetherwyndham.

Those in search of a great night out need look no further than the regular line-up of outstanding acts at Hotel520 in Tarneit.

Hotel520 snapped up the award for Best Entertainment Venue at the 2014 AHA Victoria State Awards for Excellence late last year.

Since winning the award, Hotel520 has continued to provide its customers with only the best entertainment. It has already booked most of this years tribute shows and secured a number of local acts to perform every Friday and Saturday night in the bar.

Exciting events to look out for include tribute shows to Bon Jovi, Rocky Horror, the Blues Brothers, Michael Jackson and Queen.

Hotel520 was scored by mystery judges on the quality of the acts it hosted, how well the act interacted with the audience, the variety of the shows and entertainment available at the venue, marketing and promotion of those events.

General manager Julie Shelton said management, being proud of its achievements over the rst two years of operation, entered the venue for a series of industry excellence awards including Best Marketed Hotel, Best Entertainment Venue, Best Pub TAB (Metropolitan) and Best Gaming Venue (50 machines or more metropolitan).

Hotel520 was a nalist in Best Marketed Hotel, Best Pub TAB and Best Entertainment Venue.

We were up against some really big, well-known hotels in Melbourne so for us to win after only two years of operation and to be the only hotel in the western suburbs to be represented was really wonderful, Julie said.

Wed like to thank our loyal members and patrons who have supported us through all our teething problems which all new businesses go through and who helped us create the diverse hotel weve become.

    Hotel520, 520 Sayers Road, Tarneit. Opens 10am-midnight Sunday, 9am-midnight Monday-Wednesday and 9am-1am Thursday-Saturday. Inquiries: 9748 8520 or www.hotel520.com.au

Werribee Shire will be unable to spend a $120,000 federal grant earmarked to start building the proposed drain through Werribee and Hoppers Crossing before the grant expires on June 30 because of a delay in the release of a report by the Board of Works. Although the council has a $50,000 loan to help nance the rst stage of the drain, shire engineer John Nicol said that until the Board of Works report was released to the council it was not in a position to determine the extent of the works which could be carried out with the available money.

Health Commissioners feared a deadly typhoid outbreak could spread throughout Werribee aer it was conrmed a local man had contracted the disease by eating infected mussels taken from Werribee South. A second man who ate the mussels was admitted to hospital and his family members were tested but all were cleared. Health Minister Tom Roper last week warned people against eating mussels from the Werribee coastline aer tests detected traces of bacteria and salmonella but not typhoid.

A new aquatics centre, possibly featuring a wave pool, may be built in Werribee, according to Wyndhams commissioners. e council is spending $33,000 on a study to identify potential sites, designs and costings for the project, which may be modelled on the Melton Waves aquatic centre. A survey of 300 households and a public meeting in May will help gauge community interest. e citys chief commissioner, Bernie Knight, said with a population of 75,000, Wyndham had inadequate swimming facilities.
