TROVE ~ THE RESIDENTS’ OWN VIEW OF EVENTS!

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE ASSOCIATIONWell I hope you are all keeping safe and well in these unprecedented times.

At our March meeting, our last before Lockdown, I was voted to take over from Adrian Benjamin our Chairman for the past 5 years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Adrian for serving the Association so well during that time. He was an asset to our group and a driving force for the projects completed by the Association during that time. He now has other projects in mind as a Councillor and we wish him every success in the future. They are large boots for me to fill. I will try my best to fill them.

The Pandemic has certainly played havoc with all our plans. We have had to cancel our monthly meetings and several issues of this magazine. We were unable to open the Beach Huts or hold the Furlongs Festival, which has proved phenomenally successful in the past. (Back next year though with the Sheep Show, all being well)

Other Local Groups like our Craft and Art Groups, Fitness and Slimming Groups and many others which provide such friendship and entertainment to so many, have been forced to suspend their meetings.

Hopefully though there is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Some Groups are tentatively reopening, adhering to social distancing guidelines.

The Pandemic has also seen the Community rally to help those most affected by the Lockdown. The Good Neighbour Scheme was started earlier than planned due to the start of the Pandemic. The Sutton Food Larder and School Uniform Bank were formed to help those desperately needing these services. The generosity and support of local people and businesses is outstanding. The Residents Association were fortunate to be able to help these services to set up, both with financial support and some of our members volunteering to help.

On behalf of the Association I thank all those involved in these schemes.

These Services have recently moved to the old Wilkin Chapman building, opposite the Spar on Sutton High Street.

The Residents Association are also utilising a room at these premises as a base. We hope to have it manned regularly as a point of contact as well as having some Tourist Information literature available. (Details to follow)

On a lighter note, because we had to cancel the Furlongs Festival the Association decided to organise a Scarecrow Trail. We hoped it might brighten up people’s lives a little. At the outset we thought we would get possibly 20 if we were lucky.

Well what a success it turned out to be, with over 70 scarecrows being dotted around Sutton on Sea and Sandilands. We would like to thank all those who took part for making it a great success for both residents and visitors alike. We have received so much support and fabulous comments regarding the Event, that we will have to do it again next year. Get your thinking caps on for next year’s design.

We look forward to starting the monthly meetings of the Residents Association again in the New Year and hope you can come along and join us. They are held at 7pm on the second Wednesday of the month at The Bacchus Hotel. We usually have a guest speaker followed by an update on our projects and reports from Local Groups. It is also a chance for you to have a say in what you think the Association might do going forward. Come along and meet people. You never know you might even feel you would like to get involved in some way.

Well I think that is enough from me for now.

Keep well and Stay Safe.

Gordon Moss(Chairman)

Early in 2020 a small Committee began to put together the foundations of the Scheme, collate the paperwork necessary and met with the Local Council. Requests for volunteers were placed in issues of Trove and Tidings, with 54 people initially expressing a desire to help. Initially the scheme was to go live after Easter but Coronovirus expedited the plans.

As the impending likelihood of a lockdown became inevitable the Committee worked hard to get a Constitution, a Safeguarding Policy and Volunteer Procedures and Confidentiality Agreement written and in place. The aim was to offer to shop for residents in the vulnerable categories, collect prescriptions and offer a befriending service. Naturally, a number of the initial group of residents who had responded as potential volunteers were forced into self-isolation. By 25th March the scheme was ready to go live, with 23 volunteers available for practical tasks and further self-isolating volunteers available to befriend by phone.

The calls started to come in almost immediately and continued throughout the lockdown period. By the end of July, there were over 190 residents on the list of those who had been assisted in some way. Over 400 requests

MABLETHORPE AND SUTTON GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME

for shopping had been dealt with by the volunteer shoppers, well over 300 prescriptions collected and multiple calls were being made by a group of befrienders, contacting over 80 people. Some just needed information and reassurance, others have made contact numerous times and have multiple needs. In conjunction with the Marisco Patient Participation Group, a delivery service has been provided for replacement hearing aid batteries whilst the surgeries remain closed.

All volunteers are fully insured and are provided with badges. They do not undertake jobs which are best left to qualified professionals. All calls are taken by a Duty Telephone Volunteer and are logged on a database.

The volunteers have found working in the community very rewarding and those helped have been very grateful.

The Scheme could not have succeeded without financial assistance. Donations were received from the Marisco Patient Group, Sutton Residents Association, Alford and Mablethorpe Rotary, Churches Together and a sum from the Horncastle and District Health and Wellbeing grant.

The Good Neighbour Scheme Committee would like to offer grateful thanks to all those volunteers who helped with the early success of this venture and ensured that our local community was been cared for during this difficult time.

Following easing of lockdown restrictions, the need for shopping and collecting prescriptions has reduced but the scheme can still offer help if, for example a resident has recently been discharged from hospital. Volunteers can also assist with minor household repairs and form filling.

It is hoped to expand the befriending service so please get in contact if you are feeling alone and would benefit from this.

If you are seeking assistance at all or would like to offer your services as a volunteer please contact [email protected] or telephone 07311 470866.

Have you got what it takes to help save lives at sea?

It’s been a busy summer for Mablethorpe’s lifeboat crew, despite additional safety measures being implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the volunteers are now looking for additional people to join their team to help spread the charity’s lifesaving messages. There are a number of roles available including sea-going crew, shore crew who help launch and recover our lifeboats, and tractor drivers who help get our boats to the sea. All these roles are vital to saving lives at sea.

RNLI Mablethorpe is home to two inshore lifeboats, is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, and is funded entirely by donations. To date this year the two lifeboats have been launched 27 times, 25 of which were during the lockdown period, with 8 lives having been saved.

We are now hoping to attract people from all walks of life and new recruits don’t need to have sea-going experience to get involved, in fact only 10% of our recruits have professional maritime experience. Team

players with good general health and fitness and the ability to learn new skills would be ideally suited to the roles on offer. Potential recruits must live or work within 6 miles of the station and be between 17-55 years of age. The RNLI provides comprehensive training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers and, by volunteering, recruits will gain some fantastic experience, knowledge and skills with the team . Around 95% of RNLI people are volunteers and find the experience an extremely rewarding one. It’s a great way to make new friends whilst helping save lives at sea.

The show WILL go on……(in 2021)!Like so many events throughout 2020, the Sutton on Sea Horticultural Society Annual Show had to be cancelled. We can confirm though that the show should be back in 2021 for its 79th anniversary year on Sunday 18th July. The show is open to everyone young and old, expert or novice. You don’t need to be an expert you just need a passion for growing, arranging, making or baking. To help raise funds for the show, the society normally holds two Coffee, Cookies and Cuttings mornings each year. This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will be holding a Cuttings Sale only outside the Meridale Youth & Community Centre on Saturday 3rd October from 10 am to midday. Please come along and support your local community. There will be an assortment of cuttings and a wide range of perennials for sale. If you would like to find out more about the society you can follow us on Facebook @suttononseahorticulturalsociety or anyone is welcome to attend our annual AGM which is being held on Thursday 8th October 2020 at The Meridale. We look forward to seeing you at one of these events.

Alan Taylor, Chair of Sutton on Sea Horticultural Society.

SCARECROWS SEEN IN SUTTON ON SEABecause of COVID the Residents Association were forced to cancel this year’s Furlongs Festival. We still wanted to have something for the community and the tourists to enjoy and raise a smile in these difficult times. Brian from the Committee suggested a ‘Scarecrow Trail’ and over the following four weeks from our initial meeting after lockdown, we had over 70 scarecrows around the area throughout August. This brought residents young and old, and various groups and local businesses together making scarecrows

that brought a smile to both locals and tourists. The event was opened with a Cry from our very own David Summers, Town Cryer. We even had BBC Radio Lincolnshire’s Pirate Gold team Amy and driver Alan hunting for a scarecrow as one of their clues! Following the huge success that this has been, the Association will organise another one for 2021. The scarecrows were judged by The Mayor and our Chairman, and the winner was ‘Fieldview Festival Group’. Well done and thank you to all who took part.

They look so real …I'm told my scarecrow Claira the Carer has been liked a lot. My real Carers are delighted. I'm told one man and his dog said hello to Claira and she didn't answer. He was rather miffed when told she wasn't real, though she is to me!

New Business on the High StreetI am sure most of you are already familiar with Sutton Outdoors which has been a well established part of Sutton on Sea High Street for many years now, but we would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves as the proud new owners.

During these very uncertain times for retail and particularly for local high streets we hope to carry on providing locals and holidaymakers alike with a good variety of beach goods, gifts, clothing, footwear and camping essentials.

We are planning to retain much of the same but just adding some new ideas over the next few months, including a new name (watch this space!) and new layout. We will be sticking with many of the much loved brands of clothing and footwear, including Weird Fish and Old Guys Rule, as well as more technical outdoor clothing like Regatta and Craghoppers but we are also excited to be making additions along the way.

We are taking every possible step to ensure your shopping experience with us is a 'Covid secure' one. We have hand sanitiser, and have limited the number of customers allowed in at any one time - we appreciate our customers’ patience and support during these difficult times.

We have welcomed many regular customers, whether locals or returning visitors and all have made us feel very supported on our new venture.

If you haven't already popped in we very much look forward to welcoming you to Sutton Outdoors, and of course we look forward to seeing returning customers. - Sophie and Sean

The Practice Group UpdateThe practice is well on the way to planning the Flu campaign for this year and to keep COVID safe they are looking to set up some clinics from the car park in gazebos as a drive through. Obviously there will have to have some clinics in the practice but will try to do in and out routes through the building to keep social distance. There are now protective screens round the reception area but there is still total phone triage. Patients that are asked to come to the surgery are still temperature tested and need to wear masks. Marisco is slowly trying get back to some sort of normality with some clinics but are still not able to do ear syringing, Asthma, COPD and spiro. Some third party stakeholders will be back in practice running their clinics such as Physio and Podiatry all following strict guidelines for COVID safety. Sutton on Sea practice is still a "RED" site in case it is needed and will remain closed down until the new year after the flu season ends at least. It looks as though we will be having a new dentist set up in the practice again no dates as yet confirmed. Hearing aid battery deliveries continue as long as you have your NHS number and either a Specsavers or NLAG card, just phone 07456 235574, unfortunately we can’t do repairs at the moment.

MABLETHORPE CARNIVAL (SOCIALLY DISTANCED!)We are indebted to the inspiration of the Sutton on Sea Residents Association Scarecrow Festival for this idea...!

Saturday September 19th had been set as the date for the MABLETHORPE CARNIVAL PARADE... and despite all other parades being cancelled along our coast the Mablethorpe Carnival Working Party hung on in the hope that this parade at least would survive: after all the theme was MAGIC & FAIRY TALES, and perhaps, the organisers thought, a fairy godmother would step out with a magic wand and dispel the virus. Unfortunately the Wicked Witch proved stronger: Insurance companies would not extend the policies covering ELDC and Town Council property in case an outbreak occurred as a result of its use to facilitate a parade.

But the working party was not to be defeated and plans to keep the Carnival spirit have now been announced.

For the whole of the weekend of Saturday and Sunday 19th and 20th September a MAGIC TREASURE HUNT will take place. Contestants dressed as characters from fairy tales will be invited to go in search of goblin gold stored at six locations. They will set off on the trail at different times, to be staggered all over the weekend. There will be five different trails: for cyclists, walkers, dog walkers, children, and those on mobility scooters. Prizes will be awarded not for speed but for the best costumes and for those composing the best short poems on the treasure they find. Shops will be encouraged to decorate their windows following the theme, and craft stalls will be located on private property en route. Entry will be free and Entry Forms will be available at the Queen's Park Pavilion, the Coastal Centre, the Conservative Club, Holivans, and the Remington Club. A leaflet with full details of all that is planned will be delivered to every home in Mablethorpe a week before the event.... but in the meantime the Chair of the working party Adrian Benjamin ("Mablethorpe Matters!") can be contacted for further info on 01507 443 327

The ever vigilant Ian Wild contacted Adrian Benjamin at the start of the summer holiday with photos showing how visitors were leaving rubbish by the side of our bins because they were full to overflowing. Despite the care taken by people to leave rubbish near the bins, the wind was blowing it about. As one of the ELDC councillors for Sutton on Sea, Adrian contacted the council and ascertained that their street scene team were particularly hard pressed. Not only did they have posts unfilled, they had also been landed with the unenviable task of clearing the King George Playing Fields after the travellers had moved on leaving a terrible unhygienic mess behind them. Adrian contacted other members of the Mablethorpe Area Partnership executive and they decided to approach ELDC with the offer of paying for some waste wheelie bins from a local firm, Sandilands Services. They could have waited for ELDC to hire such bins, but this would have taken time. The ELDC officers in fact were enormously grateful, as they were assisting their workers rather than taking away work from them; and the project has been so successful that ELDC is considering adopting it themselves and extending it to other parts of the district in future.

The main problem is that our present bins were designed for ice cream wrappers and cigarette packets. Because of the restrictions on eating in restaurants, more and more people are buying takeaways, and more and more takeaways are in cardboard rather than in the plastic containers which were easier to crush. Once you had 4 boxes in a bin it was full. The idea was that the bins would be put in place on a Friday and taken away the following Monday: but the one in York Road, for instance, was actually filled by the Saturday evening! Then came a wetter weekend and some bins weren't used so we weren't charged for them. And then came the cry from Mablethorpe: "Could we have some too?" After a glance at their bank account they decided they could help there as well.

It is hoped this initiative will help in keeping our resort as tidy as possible given such a remarkable influx of visitors: and we hope that by keeping Sutton on Sea welcoming they will be tempted to return here, even when they are able to fly again to hotter costas!!!

Helping with the problem of rubbish

A New Presence in Sutton High StreetNumber 44 High Street, Sutton, (the former Wilkin Chapman offices opposite SPAR) is being transformed into a base for various community organisations. The Coastal Community Team, based at the Coastal Centre, Victoria Road, Mablethorpe has secured the lease for the premises for a 3 year period. The Team is thrilled to have been awarded a Lottery grant of £10,000 for the project. The premises will have the name of TIDE TURNERS which will incorporate groups that will change things for the better, and will include to start with, the Community Food Larder, The Baby Bank, Mablethorpe Area Partnership (MAP), Sutton Residents Association and The Lighthouse Project.

The Community Food Larder, which set

Page 17: Sutton on Sea Residents Association TROVE · 2020. 9. 3. · TROVE ~ THE RESIDENTS’ OWN VIEW OF EVENTS! FROM THE CHAIR OF THE ASSOCIATION Well I hope you are all keeping safe and

up at the beginning of the pandemic in St Clement’s Church Hall, has re-located there (in the building in the yard at the rear of the building). At the beginning of lockdown the Food Larder was issuing up to 15 parcels a day, and whilst this has eased slightly there will be an ongoing need for this service, possibly for several years. Anyone wishing to access the Community Food Larder can text on 07718 208400. The Larder has recently established a School Uniform Bank for Sutton and Huttoft schools, and John Spendluffe Technology College.

The Baby Bank supports parents with babies and young children with food, clothes and baby equipment.

Mablethorpe Area Partnership is an organisation that works to bring businesses and community groups together for various purposes including facilitating leaflet swops, and also meetings, for example recent consultation on sea defences.

The Residents Association will provide an Information Point for residents and visitors in one of the front offices.

The Lighthouse Project aims to collect books for children and distribute them.

Exact details for contacting these organisations and their opening times within the building will be identified on the windows of the building as the work to prepare the rooms is completed. The role of each organisation at Tide Turners will undoubtedly develop as time goes on. In addition, discussions are ongoing with other local organisations about being part of this exciting project which is being run by the community for the community.
