For this Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we continue to learn more about the

ministries of Jesus. In today’s Gospel, Jesus cured Simon’s mother-in-law, and she

immediately began to serve Jesus and his disciples. Jesus also cured many others who

were brought to him, healing their illnesses and driving out demons. As we will see

throughout Mark’s Gospel, Jesus did not permit the demons to speak because they

knew his identity and would have revealed it to those who were present, and it was

not yet his time to be fully revealed .

After a busy day, Jesus retreated in prayer, but was pursued by Simon and others who brought news

that many people were looking for him. At this point, we begin to see a distinct role for the inner

circle of Jesus’ disciples—they act as intermediaries between Jesus and the people. Jesus reports to

his disciples that they need to leave Capernaum to preach in other places.

So Jesus’ ministry includes preaching, curing the sick, driving out demons, and then moving on to

continue his work in another place. Mark's Gospel tells us that Jesus did this throughout Galilee. This

eventually becomes one of the defining roles in the Church for priests and deacons.

In today’s Gospel, we also notice the importance of prayer in Jesus’ daily life. Jesus rose early in the

morning, removed himself from the crowds, and went to a deserted place to pray. When the

disciples found him, he told them that it was time to move on. We believe that in his prayers Jesus

found guidance and direction from God the Father. We should also bring our decision-making to

God in prayer, asking for his guidance and direction in our lives. There are many things to pray

about in our troubled world today. Pray for healing and unity!

Parish News & Announcements Bishop’s Annual Appeal

2021 Kick-Off Weekend The Bishop’s Annual Appeal (BAA) kicks

off THIS weekend, February 6-7, 2021. If

you are a parishioner with us, you should

have already received a packet in the mail

from the Diocese of Raleigh with infor-

mation regarding the BAA pledge card. However, if you did not receive the letter,

we will be providing the necessary materials for you and your family to complete

and fill out at Mass this weekend.

The theme of this year’s appeal is “One Family in Christ.” Every year, your support

makes a tremendous difference in our parish and parishes throughout the Diocese

of Raleigh. All funds raised are designated to support ministries in the areas of

Charity, Evangelization and Worship across the Diocese. In the following weeks, we

will provide more information about the goal and mission of the BAA 2021, and the

potential impact it can have for our region and elsewhere in the Diocese. To learn

more and start giving now, visit www.givetobaa.org or text (919) 629-0644.

Ash Wednesday and Lent Schedule Feb. 17, 2021 is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. It is not a holy day of

obligation, but many rightly observe it as a celebration of high importance in the

Church. We will have four opportunities throughout the day to receive ashes. The

times and services are as follows:

8:10am: English Mass with the distribution of ashes*

12pm: Liturgy of the Word with the distribution of ashes

    6pm-6:30pm: Distribution of ashes ONLY

7:30pm: Spanish Mass with the distribution of ashes*

*Requires sign-ups and will be live-streamed

For the health and safety of you and others, the distribution of ashes will look very

different this year! During this time of COVID pandemic, the Holy See has modified

the method of distributing the ashes, as outlined in the Roman Missal: Note: “The

Priest says the prayer for blessing of the ashes. He sprinkles the ashes with holy wa-

ter. Then he addresses all those present and only once says the formula applying it

to all in general: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”, or “Remember that you are

dust, and to dust you shall return.” (“Conviértete y cree en el Evangelio.” O:

“Recuerda que eres polvo y al polvo has de volver.”). The Priest (or other Minister)

then cleanses his (or her) hands, puts on a face mask and distributes the ashes to

those who come to him (or her) or, if appropriate, he (or she) goes to those who are

standing in their places. The Priest takes the ashes and sprinkles them on the head

of each one without saying anything. (Prot. N. 17/21). Thus, we ask that all who

receive ashes after the homily, stay in their pews and the priest and ministers

will come to you as we do at communion time and we ask that you please

STAND when receiving the sprinkling of ashes on your head in silence.

Lastly, we will publish our Lent and Holy Week schedule in the following weeks.

Please see our website, Facebook page and upcoming bulletins for more infor-

    mation and updates.

    USCCB Statement on New COVID-19

Vaccines On December 14, Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of Fort Wayne-

Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City in Kansas, chairman of

the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued a

statement on the new COVID-19 vaccines. In their state-

ment, the bishops address the moral concerns raised by the

fact that the three vaccines that appear to be ready for dis-

tribution in the United States all have some connection to

cational technology for families who homeschool their children. St. Mark Tuition Assistance is available based on demonstrated

need. Current or new families are eligible for tuition assistance. Families must undergo the FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment process

and have their financial standings verified before awards are given. All applications are confidential and reviewed by a Tuition Assis-

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 1:29-39 Comfort for the Sorrow

That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around

the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. (Mark 1:32-34)

Living the Word: In today’s Gospel, we see how Jesus sought time in solitude to be with his Father. He got up early, went to a desert-

    ed place, and prayed.

We need to take time each day to listen to God’s voice in prayer. Pick a time that works for your family. Gather around the prayer

space you have created in your home. Prepare your children to listen and be comfortable in the silence by asking them a question to

think about while they are quiet such as, “Where did you feel God’s love today?”, or “How might you follow Jesus more closely?”

Especially with young children, start with just a few minutes and try to increase it over time. When done, ask your children how they

felt during prayer time. See if they would like to share any thoughts they had about the questions you asked them to think/reflect on.

**If you haven’t created a prayer space in your home, don’t worry; it’s never too late! **

Right now we are in Ordinary Time, so a green cloth would work great for your tablecloth. You could place a Bible, a candle, a cross,

Holy Water, prayer cards, a rosary, etc. on your prayer space. Make sure you have your children help set it up; it will mean more to

them if they are a part of it!

    Questions of the Week:

Child: What could you do this week to comfort someone who is sad?

Adult: When have you felt the sadness of Job? When have you felt the joy of those who witnessed the healing works of Jesus?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: On February 11th, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. One day in

Lourdes, France, a little girl named Bernadette was gathering firewood when suddenly a shining, beautiful lady

appeared in the woods and talked to her! It was Jesus’ Mother, Mary!

She told Bernadette she would like a church built there in Lourdes. But nobody would believe the young girl

when she told them about Mary. But finally they built a church on the spot where Mary appeared.

Even since then many people have come to Lourdes to pray and ask for healing --- and many of their prayers

have been answered! Say at least one Hail Mary today to honor Our Lady of Lourdes.

Meet Your Musicians: A Message from the Director of Music & Liturgy Greetings dear parishioners! It is such a great honor and pleasure to plan and provide music for the litur-

gies at St. Mark. I am thankful that I am not alone in this endeavor. I could not do my job without the mu-

sical support of the fine folks that collaborate with me each week. Over the next several weeks, I’d like to take the oppor-

tunity to introduce these wonderful and talented people to you!

We’ll begin with our Double Bass player, Henry Connors, who graciously

offers his service at the 5:00pm Saturday Vigil and the 10:30am Sunday Mass.

He has played for several years here at St. Mark, and his dedication and musi-

cianship are greatly appreciated. As if playing here was not enough, he also

plays at Pine Valley Methodist on Sunday mornings. He has told me on many

occasions “I just want to play!” Well Mr. Connors, I am glad that you do.

Here’s a quick bio of our musical friend.

Henry was born and raised in Waltham, Massachusetts. Upon graduating

from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. He retired from the

Coast Guard in 2007 holding the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer.
