    Objectives

Use The basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logosor use your previous designs. Design consistent layouts for a business card and

letterhead. Use your new logo to design two stationery items with consistent design.Letterhead: 8.5 x 11 Business card: 3.5 x 2 .

    Process:

I started designing a logo in illustrator. I used the circle tool to create circles inmy mountain to make it stand out more. I then used the ellipse tool to create my sun. Imade a stroke around the circle and changed it to a dashed line and then extended thestroke to make it look like a sun. It ended up looking really good right off the bat butsomething seemed a little off. I then began laying out my business card and stationery

and everything seemed to be aligning up nicely. I played around with the colors a littlemore until I found a scheme I liked. I presented to my group and they pointed outthat my sun was a little off. I moved it over to the left and it looked a lot better. I alsostarted out with my subtext really small. I increased the size to 6pt and it was thenreadable

    MontageDiscription:

A montage made by blending 2 or more images and the use of typography.

    Programs Used: Photoshop

    Date: Saturday May 21, 2014

    Course:Communications 130, Visual Media

    Teacher:Julie Peterson

    Objectives:

Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flowUnify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant messageLearn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masksDemonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elementsUse a mask to apply a filter to one part of the imageApply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice)Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)

    Select good quality images

    Process:

I began my process by selecting an image and doing the basic Photoshop edittechniques we learned in class. I then found the map image online and selected arectangular portion of it that would fit over the horizon of my image. I then copiedover the selection to my lake image and applied a mask to it. I blended the bottom ofthe imported image to follow the mountains and made the rest of the image blendsoftly across the sky. At first I had the top of the map blended heavily with the sky but

decided to let it stretch out to cover the top of the image because it made the imagebalance out better. I had to use the stamp tool on the logs at the bottom to make a spotfor the words. I then noticed that the color of the logs and the map clashed a little. SoI added another layer and applied the color match tool to the logs and the map and itturned out just the way I wanted.

First did sketches on paper. After choosing the layout I felt got my messageacross the best I worked in InDesign. I learned how to make multiple repeating circlesand used that as part of my theme. I also had to learn how to use the gradient toolefficiently. I was very sparing with my title font. LogosDiscription:

Three logo variations for the same company.

    Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator

    Date: Saturday June 7, 2014

    Course:Communications 130, Visual Media

    Teacher:Julie Peterson

    Objectives:

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personalimage that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos oruse previous designs.Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use an image ordrawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image before submitting.)

Gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them.

    Process:

This was probably my favorite project so far. I first sat down with a pen andpaper and drew out what a few things that I thought might look good. I then startedlearning how illustrator worked and started experimenting with it. My first logo Itraced with the pen tool from an image I found of some roots. THen I applied a filterto it to give it that raindrop look and put the text over top. The second one I tracedand was going to leave it black and white first. After showing the design to several

people I decided to add some color to it to make it look more like an oil bottle. Mythird design changed a lot form what I initially had on paper. At first I wanted agradient to go across it but I decided to go straight black andwhite to show more contrast.

    BrochureDiscription:

    A 2 sided folding brochure.

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator, InDesign & Photoshop

    Date: Tuesday July 15, 2014

    Course:Communications 130, Visual Media

    Teacher:Julie Peterson

    Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure.Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four quality images (Not includingthe logo). One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so thetext follows the cutout shape of the image.Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process: I first was trying to decide on a logo. I didnt like the ones I had previouslyused so I made another simple one in illustrator. I then created a simple layout andtransferred it to illustrator. I wanted to give it a very clean look but still make itinteresting. I used a lot of repetition in my design. I repeated elements like circlesand squares to create it. I then picked a color scheme that fit my logo and found highquality images that I felt would best fit it. I used a filter from photoshop on the imagesof the stone lion and the stone face to give them more of a cartoony feel. I then placedthe background image in. I wanted the side of the image with the warmer colors to

stick out on the lip to create contrast. the other side i stretched to the other end of thebrochure and applied a gradient that slowly faded to white.I made sure the image was a full bleed then continued with some of the text. I wrotemy body copy and then edited my image of the little girl to be just a selection. Iplaced the image of the girl in the brochure and applied a text wrap. I then worked onmy paragraph and heading styles until I could find fonts and sizes that fit my design.

    Event AdDiscription:

A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and ascanner.

    Programs Used: Microsoft Word

    Date: Saturday May 18, 2014

    Course:Communications 130, Visual Media

    Teacher:Julie Peterson

    Objectives:

Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)Find, scan and import a high-quality image.Create a full-bleed design.Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, includingPhotoshop.

    Process:

I started with a few sketches and picked one I liked best. I then created atemplate in Microsoft Word matching my favorite sketch. I then chose an image andbuilt my color scheme around that. I scanned the image and cropped it to just theportion I needed. I then placed it into my template and tilted it. I aligned the bodytext with the image to create flow. I also inverted the image so that the hands werepointed towards the text. The title was tilted a bit to break out of its box to make it abit more interesting and contrast it more from the sub-title.

    Web PageDiscription:

A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo..

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator & NetBeans 8.0

    Date: Friday June 27, 2014

    Course:Communications 130, Visual Media

    Teacher:Julie Peterson

    Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is300 500 pixels.Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to atarget audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to targetaudience, design skills, etc,)Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content.

Process: I began deciding what I wanted my layout to be. I already knew that I wasgoing to have a black and white color scheme. I wanted my fonts to be simple andeasy to distinguish title from body copy. I decided I wanted a tree silhouette on theleft edge taking up a third of the page. I used illustrator to create a gradient goingfrom black to white behind the tree image to balance out my design. I used css to alignthe tree image and the actual web page. I Made the web page take up about the other2 thirds of my page. I used netbeans as my text editor so I could keep all my stylesheets separate. I used one style-sheet (Screen.css) to do the styling and I used another

style-sheet that someone had put together online (gridism.css) to help me make myelements shrink with screen size. (Ex. if the user was to have a smaller screen thetree image and my other elements would stack to increase readability.). At the end Iincluded a fun little javascript code to make my logo animate to create more contrastand draw eyes to the logo itself.

    Objectives:

    Process:

I started with an idea of a client that wanted to promote his theme park. I cameup with a few designs and decided on one I wanted. I first edited the backgroundpicture in photoshop using the basic photoshop techniques. I lightened the imageand gave it more saturation to make it look more pleasing to the eye. I then startedworking on the face pictures. I selected them in photoshop and created a mask andthen moved them over to my background image. I applied a feather and used thepaintbrush to get the fade I wanted on them. I then used liquify on a square to createthe shape in the corner and applied an emboss on it to make it pop out more. I thenadded opacity to make it blend in with the background more. Finally I selected my

fonts and then took one more look at everything to make sure everything was allignedand a size that worked with my message.
