Programs UsedMicrosoft Word
Objectives
• Find, scan and import a high-quality image.• Create a full-bleed design.
• Choose a color scheme and type that supports the message
• Learn to use Word design features
ProcessI scanned an image from Miss Rumphius, an iconic childrens’ book
set in Maine about a woman who “makes the world more beautiful” by
scattering lupine seeds everywhere. I dida few sketches to generate
layout options, then turned to Word. I pulled the color scheme of
green, purple, and orange from the image itself, and find that the
orange really added good contrast. I also contrasted the serif title font
with the san serif body copy. I created some lupine-shaped bullets torepeat the shapes found in the image, and arranged the text to mirror
the diagonal line created on the bottom left by the lupines. I love how
the image of Miss Rumphius, the sale of lupine plants and seeds, and
the tagline from the book “Do something to make the world more
beau tif ul” all work tog eth er r eall y n icel y t o c reat e a stro ng the me for
this event.

Objectives• Learn basic photography skills• Take a photo to match a chosen color scheme
• Incorporate color scheme into layout.
• Use a digital camera to take a quality image
• Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on
separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing)
• Use layers to design text & repeating graphic elements in Photoshop
ProcessI took a walk in the woods and took some photos of a nearby creek.
When I g ot home , t houg h, I wasn ’t very happy with the colo rs i n
the pictures. The water was muddy, and the green, yellow, and brick
colors that I pulled from the photo weren’t very appealing. I used a
mask to make the water a little more blue. This improved the appeal
of the photo, but it still seemed flat. I found a texture overlay in my
files, and adding that gave my image some depth, and then I added a
clipping mask that I think really adds to the rustic, woodsy feel.

Objectives• Create an three original logos to fit a company
• Conduct market research to narrow it down to one• Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos
• Refine one logo with variations for color, black & white, and white
on a colored background
ProcessIt was fun to return to Illustrator this week, because I’m a lot more
comfortable here than with Photoshop or Indesign. I sketched out
a dozen or so ideas, picked the best three, and worked them up in
Illustrator. I took a market survey, which ended up evenly divided
bet ween two of the ide as. I we nt wit h t he one my i nst ruct or like d b est .
I used the pen tool to create the apostrophe heart shape- I wanted it
to have a little dimensionality, reminiscent of a piece of raised metal
type. After my critique I simplified the typography to a font that has
very little thick to t hin transition so nothing disappears when the
logo is shrunk to a smaller size. I also simplified the graphic part
of the logo to make fewer small lines and details. I think I ended up
with a logo that would come across well at any size and in a variety of
formats. I’ve inserted an image below that shows several steps in the
evolution of my my logo design.

Objectives• Create a design with strong focal point and flow
• Unify layout with a consistent theme and spiritual message• Blend two or more images together gradually using masks
• Demonstrate advanced Photoshop skills
• Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
• Apply typography principles
ProcessFor this project I used Photoshop. I was asked to keep track of the
steps I took to create this image:
• Opened a blank 8.5×11 in canvas Photoshop and brought in an
image of stars and sky.
• Copied the stars layer, than applied a Gaussian blur to the top layer,
and reduced the opacity to 85%.
• Opened an image of a woman with outstretched arms, clipped
around her, and brought that into the stars image.
• Copied the layer with the woman. Desaturated the top layer of the
woman and lowered the opacity to 30%.
• Made a third copy of the stars layer, and created a clipping mask
with that and one of the woman layers, so now you see the woman
with the stars showing through behind her.

Programs UsedNotebook ++, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
Objectives
• Size and optimize an original logo as a .png• Write content to describe the process of creating your logo
• Acquire a working knowledge of HTML
• Acquire a working knowledge of CSS
• Identify hex colors to match logo using Photoshop
ProcessFor this project I used Notebook ++ as my text editor. We were given
a simple HTML outline and CSS page. We were asked to change a few
things, to add our own image, change some colors, etc. Very simple
things. I took the opportunity to learn a little more about web design.
I started with a goal of designing a completely responsive page. I had
to cut back on that goal for this assignment. I searched W3 schools
whenever I got stuck, and was usually able to find an example of how
to do what I wanted to d o. I’m pleased with what I designed, I feel that
it looks a little more updated then the template we were originally
given.

Objectives
• Apply design principles• Use appropriate typography
• Incorporate InDesign skills to improve flier layout
ProcessFirst, I spent some time thinking about the message and the audience.
I did some research, gathering examples of other conference fliers
for inspiration. Then I brainstormed visually, sketching out possible
layouts with pencil and paper. I chose my favorite layout of the basic
elements (title, images, body copy, etc.) and turned to Indesign. I
tried to look at the basic shapes and how they were working together,
paying attention to proximity and alignment. Then I added some
contrast through value changes and a asymmetry. I tried to make sure
that the overall look was unified, that everything belonged together.
Aft er doi ng som e c riti que sess ion s, I poli shed up t he t ypog raphy and
simplified the graphic elements to streamline the design.

Objectives• Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
• Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure• Incorporate at least four quality images
• Clip an image in Photoshop and text-wrap it in InDesign so the text
follows the cutout shape of the image
• Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs,
headers, and subheaders
• Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color
ProcessI decided to design an instructional brochure. I set up a white box and
took step by step photographs of the process. I used Adobe Illustrator
to design a logo using three S’s for Spinning Sky Designs. I also
created the background graphics in Illustrator, as I feel Illustrator has
bet ter too ls f or that . I used Phot osho p t o e dit my p hoto s, a nd to make a
cut-out of the large doll photo. I used a text wrap in InDesign to make
the title wrap around the doll photo. I used Indesign to put all of the
elements together, and to set up the text. The paragraph style tool was
especially helpful in this project, so every time I changed my mind I
didn’t have to manually redo all of the text.

Objectives• Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
• Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.• Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Apply
typography rules, keeping small copy
• Keep designs simple
ProcessFor this project I reached out to Cara Sawyer, head librarian at the
Cherryfield Public Library. Cherryfield is my mother’s hometown in
Maine, and one of my favorite places in the world. I admire how hard
the librarians work to bring the services they bring to t heir town, and
I wanted to do something to help. I sent Cara a series of questions
about the library and what kind of logo design she was looking for.
Aft er sket chin g o ut som e i deas , I used Illu stra tor to crea te seve ral
different logos for her to consider. I’ve inserted an image below to the
sheet I sent for her consideration. I pulled keywords from her answers
to my questions, and images of my different ideas. She and I are still
working to finalize and refine a logo, but for the purposes of this
assignment I picked one and used it to create a professional looking
letterhead and business card in Indesign.

Programs Used Ado be Illu stra tor
Objectives• Use provided image to create a strong focal point
• Present pertinent information in an easily readable manner• Combine text and images to create a layout that reinforces the
message and theme of the production
• Create multiple sizes/ dimensions of layout for printing at 8.5x11,
18x24, and 24x36
ProcessI chose the window with the image of Christ in as thefocal point,
and designed everything around that. I lightened the value of the
lines depicting the apostles so that the focal point would be darker
and stand out inside the window frame. I placed a slight gradient on
the page so it would be lighter behind the window. I offset the focal
point, instead of centering it, and arranged the typography so that it
would look like it was flowing out from the bottom of the focal point.
I started with a dark blue background, but lightened it because I felt it
fit the message and theme better. This poster was distributed all over
Northern Virgina, Washington DC, and Maryland as well as on social
media. All three performances were sold out.

provided) into the front cover
• Incorporate an event logo, company logo, sponsor logos, location
photo and bio photos into design
• Write copy based on information provided
• Include sections for workshop information, instructor bios,
testimonials, location information, and sponsor information
ProcessSince I was asked to place the previously created badge image on the
cover, and the colors in that image were a little intense, I chose an
analogous color scheme that matched the blue in the badge. I found a
picture on NASA’s website that provided a non-distracting background
for the cover. I created the graphics in Illustrator, then placed those
files into an InDesign document and set up the text. I gathered
feedback from the client several times and made small tweaks in t he
design and text, then exported it as a high quality PDF for printing.
