Mine notselling jobs

Modikwa Platinum Mine this week warned residents in the area not tobecome victims of a scam through which people promise jobs at themine in exchange for money.“It has come to our attention that various individuals are contactingpeople offering fictitious job opportunities at Modikwa Platinum Mineat a cost. The public should take note that such practices are nothingmore than scams which are intended to defraud the public of theirhard earned cash,” a press release by the company stated.“Modikwa Mine follows a tried and tested recruitment practiceprocess whereby jobs are advertised through print, electronic andalso on the Mine’s website for all the qualifying job seekers to apply.Modikwa Mine also distributes vacancy lists to local tribal offices andthe local press. Any vacany advertised can be verified via our HR/careers section. The Mine will never use a mobile phone number asa primary contact number for a job advertisement. We encourage the community to be vigilant as and when theyencounter individuals who alleges to be recruiting on behalf ofModikwa Mine and report such individuals through our hotline whistleblow telephone 0800 006 792.Modikwa Mine take this matter extremely seriously and is workingwith the appropriate legal authorities where possible to bring them tobook. It is important for the public to remember that these scams willcontinue to exist as long as there are people willing to pay someonein exchange for a job opportunity, be it real or fictitious. Therefore, asa matter of principle, Modikwa Mine appeals to the public at large tonever pay for a job as there is no company in South Africa that sellsany job” they concluded.

Has Manoke been forgotten?Mr Calvin Selepe from Manoke Village 4km outsideBurgersfort this week complained that his village onlyreceives water when there is a funeral.“The only time we see running water from our taps iswhen there’s a funeral. Maybe we have to kill eachother to get water? When someone dies we celebratebecause that’s when we’ll get water,” he said.He explains that people currently buy water from some

residents in the village who could afford to drillboreholes at their homes. “With the high rate ofunemployment in the village people cannot afford to buythose containters with water. Pensioners suffer”.He added that their roads are rocky and the only timethey see government officials is near election time.He forwarded the photographs below of himself and therocky road through his village.

Westvaal Steelpoort, as everybody knows, is situated at the busiest cross in town. Andthe road surface in that intersection is horrible to say the least.

So, Platinum Gazette, after taking delivery from the dealer for a test spin onWednesday with the new 1.4 Opel Astra Turbo (petrol and automatic), very gently easedinto this infamous intersection for fear of damaging the vehicle (the editor is used to amore robust 4 x 4).

First impression, from the intersection and heading to Lydenburg / Mashishing overthe railroad (bad surface again) is how well the thing rides.

It’s a bigger car than the previous generation, having grown by 17cm in length and7cm in wheelbase, but feel still larger, floating serenely over dodgy tarmac and delicatelysmoothing bumps and potholes without ever feeling disconnected.

Unlike some of the competitors, Opel chose not to adopt multi-link rear suspensionon the Astra, instead using a development of the last car’s torsion beam set-up, but witha new Watt’s linkage - a pair of horizontal supports connected by a short vertical bar - toreign in the lateral movement of the twist axle, a novel arrangement patented by GeneralMotors and cars can be uniquely calibrated (read for our crap roads) while offering abetter balance of comfort and handling.

The turbo is barely felt and speed arises quickly as a glance on the stylishinstruments confirm. The speed is also safe with all the electronic gizmos thrown in withthis car (air bags etc) and tight bends require a genuinely daft approach speed to get thetraction control light flashing.

The Astra remains composed on the road and a stylish vehicle. The built quality, outside and inside is up there with the best and the space in the vehicle and boot islarge and comfortable for its class.

The engine pulls the car to 100km/h in less than 10 seconds if you know what youare doing and the brakes pull it to a standstill quickly and in a straight line without aswerve.

Niggles - not much. We don’t like the winders for the back windows, the Mariebiscuit spare and no vanity mirror for the driver (it is so stylish you may wish to put on atie you know). But for R265 500, we think it is a steal.

Style, quality,comfort, Astra
