Revival forTswelopele

Farms?

Sekhukhune Development Agency (SDA) is spearheading efforts to revive the now largely dormant TswelopeleCooperative Farms Project adjacent to Burgersfort and Praktiseer.

A number of roleplayers attended a meeting yesterday on a piece of the land near Praktiseer, where the ChiefExecutive Officer of the SDA, Mr Sephaka Motswiane explained the role ahead with the farms.

A few years back the land was ustilised for primarily potato farming and supplied the crop to potato chip companies.During the past few years, nothing is going on at the project, except for maize that is planted on a small piece of thefarm. When everything went bust a few years ago Platinum Gazette investigated the issue, but nobody, including theDepartment of Agriculture in Praktiseer were prepared to go on record about the reasons for the apparent failure of theproject.

Mr Sephaka annouced at yesterday’s meeting that 15 people were appointed to start repairing the fence of the landon the Ga-Matodi side of the Penge road. The reason for the meeting was to explain to possible future strategicpartners the possible way forward, the role of the SDA, the role of the cooperative and the role of the strategic partnersthat will tender to render services with regards to the project. The tender procedures and what it is that is neede fromstrategic pasrttners were also explained to all present. Mr Sephaka said only the one piece of land on the Ga-Matodiside of the road will be focused on at this stage.

Dwarsrivier MineDwarsrivier invests in educationDwarsrivier Mine donated 4 laptops to Teacher Ambassadors workingin schools surrounding the mine’s operations. The donation is partof a 24-unit donation done by African Rainbow Minerals and Assorelimited to ambassadors in Teach SA’s programme. The hand-over took place at Amani Boutique Hotel and ConferenceCentre in Mashishing (Lydenburg). The gathering of stakeholders forthe hand-over resulted in a convenient feedback session from theTeach SA ambassadors, principals and input from Dwarsrivier Mine,ARM and Teach SA.Hunadi Makalela and Promise Mashela are the ambassadors atNgwaabe Combined School at Ga-Masha. Innocentia Lebelo andMahori Tiyani are working at Mashishing Secondary School. Throughthe placement of the Teach SA ambassadors at these schoolsDwarsrivier Mine aims to assist in the improvement of mathematicsand science from grade 10 to 12. These subjects are essential forfurther studies, not only into a mining related field, but many otherfields as well. The ambassadors related their challenges and achievements as wellas the plans they have for 2014 during the event. The principals, MrMkhabela (Mashishing Secondary School) and Mr Motene (NgwaabeCombined School) both thanked Dwarsrivier Mine for the assistancethey’ve received through the placement of the ambassadors.Mr Remember Mmbengwa from Dwarsrivier Mine encouraged theambassadors to not only invest in the future of the children they areassisting, but to also further their own studies. He emphasised theimportance of the subjects in which the ambassadors are providingassistance, so that minerals beneficiation and other industrial relatedprocess that grows the country’s economy can be done in SouthAfrica. An example given was that of manufacturing stainless steelproducts (e.g. kitchen utensils) in South Africa using our own mined

chrome products and not always export chrome ore to China and othercountries and buy kitchen utensils labelled “Made in China” while the rawmaterial was mined in South Africa. Ms Princess Twala from ARM added thatit is important to unlock the potential hidden in each and every human being. She also encouraged the ambassadors to start small, but start withempowerment projects such as art exhibitions and organising clubs such asathletics and cycling which can integrate into existing structures such as theDwarsrivier Marathon Club. The laptops donated will assist the ambassadors to do their work and to helpunlock their own potential as they develop themselves further.

Each Ambassador received a laptop.

Slate diggersinactive

A fledgling slate mining business is after years no further than when villagers in Makopung startedto take out the resource for reselling. When Platinum Gazette visited the erea last week, it wassoon clear that inacessability is one of the problems. The nearest a vehicle can come to the rock isthe white vehicle in the bottom photograph. The slate is also dug from the mountain by hand andhave to be carried to a vehicle or donkey cart for transport to the tarred road (R 36), a couple ofkilometres away. Villagers say “ yes it is difficult, but we still try and sell some of the slate whenpeople ask”.

Re-build engines for sale

BMW, Corolla, Tazz, CitiGolf, Polo Classic, Opel

Astra, Sentra, Opel Corsa,Hyundai and much more

Bow tie on the grille, the Chevrolet Cruze isa smart car. This offering in the market fromGeneral Motors South Africa now comeswith the same ecotec 1.4 turbo petrol engineas the Opel Astra we drove a few weeks ago.And there the similarities end, but not in abad way.

The Opel we drove came with anautomatic gearbox, but in the 1400 Cruze itis married to a six speed manual box –driving stick as the Americans say.

The manual gearbox proved to be noproblem , but it will help if you know ‘stick’if you want to get the best of the smooth andlag free engine.

And smooth is the word. The cruise wehad with the Cruze was smooth, verysmooth. The car is superbly comfortable todrive and at low speed can feel a bit wallowydue to the soft suspension (not too fast overthe speed bumps), but firms up nicely as yougo faster..

And it is quiet, road noise (even at 170km/h on a bad surface) is not intrusive at alland the suspension weighs up nicely incurves, although it is not a sports car.

As a family offering the car is largeenough, with a big boot and all the gizmos tokeep everybody happy, entertained and safe.

One practical example is the USB andMP3 connections in the CD compartment inthe centre console, keeping stuff like phonesand music players neatly tucked away fromthe dash.

Dirt roads (even bad ones) proved to beno problem to the vehicle as long as you takecare not to let the suspension bottom out andthe ride is almost serene. A car you can livein with comfort on a long trip.

O yes, it also has the new start – stopthing to save the planet, but it only kicks inintermittently (not a fault, that is how itworks apparently, a number of variablesmust first ‘agree’ with each other).

The Cruze is an attractive car and we likeit very much. Little things that can becomebig issues in our area such as a full size sparewheel means kudos to the Cruze. Says the

Cruze-ingcomfort

female part of the team “at least it has the vanitymirror on the driver’s side you always moanabout and as a woman I am surprised at thecomfort and space. Women tend to only think ofmarques your dad or brother is in favour of whenlooking at a new vehicle. The Cruze is a verycapable offering in the market.”

One gripe – when you drive stick with sixgears and your hand are on the biggish side, youtend to knock the aircon controls ‘deurmekaar’.Guess it only needs a bit of practice.

The car is available in both the hatchbackand sedan models. The 1,4 turbo unit pushes out103 kW at 4 900 r/min and 200 Nm of torquebetween 1 850 and 4 900 r/min.

Price: R249 600 for the 1.4T LS at WestvaalSteelpoort.

Should the car’s rivals be worried?Definitely so!

Windand

stormdamageOn Monday evening a storm hit Burgersfort and left a path ofdestruction behind.A strong wind accompanied the heavy downpour of rain. The windpulled off roofs and flattened hawker stands around Ext. 10 and Ext.5.The flats in the Khadima Centre (next to the taxi rank) had half its roofblown off and the next morning, water was still ankle deep in some ofthe hallways.

Some of the hawkers just sat down to tryand get over the shock of what happenedto their stalls during the night.

Tuesday morning had a slow start ashawkers tried to repair their stalls andresidents of flats that had been damagedtried to dry out their homes.Corrugated shade structures had simplybeen crumpled in the heavy wind.

Mr Ernest Chilwane and MsPamela Fabi said: “He needs topay back! Tax is not for him to payhis house. That is 100% crime ifthe taxpayers’ money was used toimprove his house. Mnr. Johan du Preez en Me. Esmerelda Howard sê:“Dis baie goed dat haar bevindings bekend gemaakword. Eintlik moet hy al die geld terugbetaal - al moethy die plek verkoop om dit te kan doen. Wys net, jouskelmstreke haal jou een of ander tyd in”.

Left: Mr TumediSekhukhune said: “Iwelcome the release ofthe report. I think thePresident was wrong. Helied and he misled people. He should have takenbetter responsibility. Hemust repay and he mustbe impeached fromparliament and aspresident. He must knowwhat happens at hishouse. It was publicmoney after all!”

Mr Lawrence Kgoete said: “Yes, wehave a right to know what thatreport says. Zuma just tookadvantage of the situation, he didnot lie on purpose. I think he and hisfamily must pay back all of themoney not for security. That moneyis too much!”

Mr Michael Mnisi said: “I think thepolicy and procedures ofgovernment must lead whathappens to Zuma. The StatePresident of South Africa isuntouchable. I think we don’t havethe power to discuss him orentertain any thoughts about whathe does. The report is good, butpeople must respect procedure andthe President”.

Right: Mr Julius Nkgadima said: “Itis good the report was released. Itcan expose the ruling party. I’m verydisgusted. There is a lot ofcorruption in parliament. He mustpay back all the money”.

Right: Mr Bafana Mkhawane and Mr Vincent Seragesaid: “He must pay everything back! People feelcheated by their President. This is a free country, weneed to know how our money is spent. We welcomethe report”.

Mr David Mafogo said: “He mustpay back at least a little bit. Thereport must be there because weare a country of justice. I thinkZuma tried to hide how much hewas benefiting”.

Mr John Paile said: “I want to knowwhat the Public Protector found.Zuma must pay back some of themoney for Nkandla. Too manypeople suffer - they can improveeducation or health services withthat money. People are suffering. That mansion of his is not right”.
