Oops! Plan not working ...The concrete pillars, which are not seats, and were erected around Burgersfort’straffic lights last week, now do not seem to be have been a very good plan. This planwas made by Greater Tubatse Municipality to protect the traffic lights against recklessdirvers, but they did not realise how wild and reckless drivers can behave in Burgersfortif congestion picks up. It seems that with the large and heavy vehicles in the middle oftown, as well as the general free for all (while traffic officers ‘checks’ licences at aquiet spot outside the CBD madhouse) the little concrete poles did not last long. Thisstate of affairs is not limited to one, but to more intersections.

Friday afternoon rushIn the photograph a Limpopo Traffic Control vehicle rushes towards the bridgeover the Steelpoort / Tubatse river last week Friday to try and remedy the traffic jamthat saw vehicles jam packed way past the Bothashoek turn-off to Praktiseer.

Plan working!Since a week or two ago, points men are on duty at the T-junction from Modiwa PlatinumMine / Dilokong Hospital and the R37 from Polokwane. The traffic are regulated duringpeak hours when this junction turns into a nightmare. This plan was conceived byModikwa in conjunction with traffic authgorities and especially Modikwa employees agratefull for the steps taken to ensure their safety.

... and this one as wellTubatse Police Station in Praktiseer is a neat place, with a nice garden. The absence of a sprinkler to water the lawn proves to be no obstaclewhen a large coldrink bottle is at hand ...

Two Rivers Platinum Mine and the Limpopo Roads,Transport and Public Works Department have joinedhands this week to promote road safety. The firstphase of the project will be focussed along the R555,between Burgersfort and Steelpoort Park and isaimed at curbing the fatalities caused by crashes asa result of stray animals on the roads, especiallyduring the night. Over 1500 reflector bands weredistributed to more than ten cattle farmers stayingclose to the main road connecting the mines and thesurrounding communities.

Two Rivers Platinum says bad or lack of roadmaintenance as well as unattended potholes is oneaspect and a leading cause of fatalities. The minesays mines operating in the southern portion of theEastern Limb (Steelpoort Valley) have recently lostmore than eight employees as a result of crashesnear the mines where stray animals were found tobe the leading cause. “We lost 6 of our colleagues inthe recent past due to car accidents on these roads. At Two Rivers Platinum, safety forms an integral partof our value-system and we therefore did not hesitateto identify this project as one of our key SLPinitiatives. This project is an extension of our on-mineroad safety campaign”, said Mr Jakes Jacobs, theHealth and Safety Leader at Two Rivers PlatinumMine.

In addition to the reflector bands and as anextension of its mine safety policy, Two Rivers

Platinum has invested over R2 million, on roadmaintenance and pothole repairs focussing onSekhukhune Road and R577 access roads leading toLydenburg in Mpumalanga. Similar work is plannedfor the local access roads. This will be implementedin the next financial year.

The recent RTMC reports and subsequentresearch conducted have shown that stray animalcommonly found along the public roads at night areamong the most common causes to crashes andhave contributed to the high number of fatalities onthe South African roads in 2011. The trend alsoproved that the common occurrence per day time isbetween 19h00 and 23h00.

“As part of our contribution towards the reductionand possibly the total elimination of the unnecessaryloss of life and property on our roads, Two RiversPlatinum is committed towards facilitating sustainabledevelopment in the communities closer to where weoperate and hence our involvement in road safetycampaigns including road maintenance. The need todonate the reflective bands among the local cattlefarmers in partnership with the relevant governmentdepartments and the neighbouring communities istherefore aligned to our SLP objectives. We hope andtrust that other mines will join hands with us so thatwe can improve the condition of our roads and savelives on our roads”, said Mr Adriaan de Beer, theBusiness Leader at Two Rivers Platinum Mine.

The Sasol filling station was targeted by criminals in the early hours of Mondaymorning this week. According to a security company, three armed men held thepersonnel at the garage at gunpoint at about 03:00 on Monday while they broke intothe office. They tried to blow open the door of the safe, but did not succeed. The menthen took flight with the computer with the closed circuit television material fromsecurity cameras on it.

JSE-listed exploration company Platfields on Tuesday said it had been granted a newprospecting right for chrome ore, cobalt, copper ore, iron-ore, lead, nickel ore,platinum-group metals (PGMs) and other minerals near Lydenburg. This consolidated Platfields’ prospecting right on portions 4, 5 and 39 of the farmsKliprivier 73 and Draaikraal. The prospecting right covers about 1 200 ha and ispositioned directly next to the Everest South mine and Booysendal project. The exploration programme at Kliprivier targeted a shallow-positioned prospect ofthree-million ounces, at a grade of three grams a ton of ore. Platfields said it hadalready indicated a resource of two-million ounces in its Berg project, which is anextension of Kliprivier.“With our 100 percent-owned prospecting right now in place, we can fast-track thedrilling programme, designed to calculate the resource on the project area. Drillingwould start in three months,” CEO Bongani Mbindwane said further stating “Thisproject will complement the existing portfolio of Platfields, in particular the PlatfieldsDraaikraal project, while adding further weight to its standalone potential for mining”.

African Rainbow Minerals, said on Monday itwas interested in acquiring Anglo AmericanPlatinum (Amplats) assets if they becameavailable.

Anglo American, which holds 80 percentof Amplats, said earlier this month that itwas reviewing its investment in the world’slargest platinum producer. The platinumbusiness has not matched the production, productivity and safety levels of earlier yearswhile returns have been in decline.

While Anglo has not ruled out spinningoff what would be a $15-billion asset,

ARM interested inAmplats assets

analysts believe it is more likely to sell themines or close certain shafts.

“We are very, very close to AngloPlatinum, we know all the inside discussionsand we are engaging in that. I thinksomething can come out of that,” ARM CEOAndré Wilkens told Reuters in an interviewafter the group unveiled its first-half results.

ARM, which has a 50 percent stake intwo South African platinum mines, Modikwaand Two Rivers, is also evaluating threeacquisitions in the platinum sector that couldcost up to R6-billion.

AdvertorialMigraines in childrenIt is estimated that 30-50% of school-age children and teenagers get headaches.Migraine headaches are also very common. They occur in about 3% of pre-schoolers,11% of primary school students and 23% of high school students.

Having other family members with migraine headaches would make it more likely in achild as this runs in families. Migraine attacks last between 1 hour and 72 hours.

Symptoms

Symptoms include a headache pain on one side of the head or moderate to severepain on both sides of the head. A pulsing or throbbing headache pain. Nausea orvomiting, sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound, an aversion to certain odours. Visualdisruptions, muscle weakness and language impairment. Episodes of slow or slurredspeech, ringing in the ears, double vision. Symptoms of migraines are also made worseby routine physical activities such as climbing stairs.

Boys get more migraines than girls before they reach puberty. After puberty, girls aremore inclined to get migraines.

Keep a migraine symptom diary and record the details of your child’s headache. Writedown when he or she had it, what may have caused it, what made it better. From thisyou can learn what to avoid in future.

Many children with migraines continue to have headaches as adults. About 25% willoutgrow their headaches.

Treatment

Avoiding migraine triggers such as foods (cheese, chocolates and citrus fruits), poorsleep habits, lack of exercie and skipping meals.

An age appropriate pain reliever can be taken. Medication ofr nausea could also betaken if vomiting forms part of the headache attacks. If a child is having at least threemigraine attachs per month a medication preventing headaches can also be taken.

As your doctor or pediatrician for help with the diagnosis andtreatment of your child’s headaches.

Ms Katlego Boshego said: “Our black peopledon’t understand labour law. They must goto the Department of Labour for help insteadof attacking the employer. To fight andattack is not the solution, but unfortunately itstill happens”.

Ms Lerato Napo and Ms Agnes Laka said: “Farm attacks are often caused by poverty andmoney. People must have jobs - small businesses etc. because government cannot hire all ofus. It is a bit of both - racism and poverty. People are poor and they feel white people owethem something. To poor black people, middle class white people look rich and they wantthat”.

Left: Mr SelloMohubedu said: “Thebig issue isstarvation. People inSouth Africa arestarving. Someplaces there is stillracism left, but notalways. People oftenbreak in and commitcrimes to supporttheir families”.

Right: Mr DavidMooketsi said: “Ithink farm attackshappen because ofpoverty, but mostlybecause of revengeand racism. Forfarmers there isoften no stablepayments. Manyfarmers are alsostuck withinapartheid. The lawmust bring equality. The newgovernment hasmade people feelinsecure”.

Ms Kim Engelbrecht said: “Farm attacks are all about poverty. Not atall about racism. People are hungry. It is just very unfortunate thatmost farmers are white”. With her is AJ.

Mr Niklaas Lesese said: “Racism is still aproblem and poverty too. The problem is thatall of us are working, but we earn smallmoney. We are suffering. Money is an issue -also in farm attacks”.

Mr Sakkie Thobejane said: “To decrease crime is tocreate jobs. Poverty is the major cause. People thinkthey will be able to get money on the farms”.

Mr Willem Montgomery sê: “Ek dink dis 50% ‘n ras-ding en50% wraak in baie gevalle. Omdat mense sleg behandelword of die persepsie het dat hulle sleg behandel word. Dieregering moet strenger beskermingsmaatreëls instel. As aldie boere uitgemoor word waar gaan die land kos kry?”

According to recent research from theInstitute of Race Relations in Johannesburg90% of farm attacks are intended only asrobbery. 2% of attacks are political or raciallymotivated. In 7% of cases it has to do withemployment disputes. These figures were obtained from amongstothers, police dockets from 1991 to 2003.More recent studies showed that people stillhave the perception that farm attacks areracially or politically motivated.Mr Boeta du Toit from Agri-North West lastweek said that they recognise that mostattacks are pure crime driven acts, but dofeel that irresponsible political statementscould enhance a climate of racial intoleranceand create an attitude of brutality.According to Du Toit there is also amisconception that farmers have large sumsof money and weapons in their homes.Mr Solly Pheto from Cosatu reminded peoplethat criminals carry out farm attacks andmurders on farms, not farm workers. Hesaid: “Murder is unacceptable, no matter themotive. Farm attacks destroy the relationshipbetween the farmers and their workers”.We asked readers what they think aboutfarm attacks and possible causes of farmattacks.

Mr Glen Seponye said: “It is all about money. We all go to work to get money. Moneymotivates people. Without money there is nolife. They turn to crime and farm attacks formoney”.

Mnr.

Ms Angel Kgopane said: “It is a lack ofinformation that causes it. Educationalbackground is important. If you are educatedyou know what is wrong and what is good. There is also rich people who take advantageof poor people. They get them to do badthings for money. Poverty plays a role”.

Mnr.

Mr Prince Mpuru said: “The criminals thinkthere is money on the farms. Create morejobs so people can earn their own money”.

Regs: Mnr Mandla Tjia sê: “Die boere moetdie swart mense baie mooi hou. Daar isverskillende redes vir plaasaanvalle. 1. Diewerkers word nie altyd mooi behandel nie. 2.Die werkers word nie altyd mooi betaal nie.3. Die mense wil sommer net steel. Plasemoet ook soos winkels sekuriteit kry. Nogvoor Julius Malema se uitsprake oor grondterugvat was daar al aanvalle, so ek dink niehy het ‘n invloed nie. As die boere goed is virdie swart mense sal hulle hulle nie kanaanval nie”.

Me.

Me. Misdaad is misdaad. Die inligting oor jouhuis, geld, wapens, kluise ens. is in jou huis en mense wat daar werkhet toegang daartoe”. By haar is Anne van Wyk.

Regs: Mnr. Dikwels wordAfrikaanssprekende boeredoodgemaak”. By hom is Jan-Hendrik.

Left: Ms. Comfort Mohlabe, MsCynthia Malomane and MsYolanda Morena said: “It is aracial thing. It is because ofpeople wanting to showgovernment we want to takethe farms back. That farmersshould not occupy it. It is abouttaking back the land. It is alsobecause of unemployment. Therate of unemployment is sohigh. Farmers should get moresecurity from governmentotherwise it will get worse.People are trying to win theland back and we still haveracist people around”.
