Two dwellingsstill need to be

evacuated

“All the tests are completed and everything is working fine. We canstart with impoundment, but for two dwellings that still need to beevacuated”, said the Department of Water Affairs official as PlatinumGazette took photographs of the lonely house adjacent to the oldportion of the R555 that will soon be swamped by the water in thenew De Hoop Dam.

‘The owner of the house does not want to move. At the back ofthe mountain there is another house that is still occupied. Theimpoundment licence will not be granted while people are still livingon the land” he says. “I believe legal steps are taken. In the meantime we lose a lot of water each day.

The sluices are partially closed today because of a specialrequest. We have heard the Police are looking for a body downstream of the dam. Otherwise all the water just rushes through”.

The official said although it looks as if water is collecting in thedam basin, the level fluctuates with the rains in the catchment areaand the level does not actually rise. “This will of course change if it issafe to close the sluices. The dam itself will only be completed innext year and then it could take several years before the dam is full, depending on the rains in the catchment area” he said.

On Wednesday morning Police divers searched the waters below theSteelpoort River bridge from Bothashoek.According to the Burgersfort SAPS it is alleged that a woman waskidnapped, murdered and her body dumped in the river nearTutakgomo. By the time of going to press the allegations could notbe confirmed and no body had been found.Their search caused major spectator value which in turn slowedtraffic into Burgersfort. Many pedestrians also gathered on the bridgeso watch the SAPS members at work.

Petro Mkhonza (34) and Vincent Mhlope (32)received 18 years imprisonment after they werefound guilty of robbery with aggravatingcircumstances. The men were sentenced in theLydenburg Regional Court on 25 October. The crime of which they were found guilty tookplace on 5 October 2009. They robbed MrGunter’s family at gunpoint, taking computers, laptops, money, clothes and a Toyota Double

18 Year sentencefor robbery

Cab.The two robbers were arrested on the samenight near White River. The one was shot andwounded in the course of arrest.Sergeant Mantshwane from the OhrigstadSAPS said: “The sentence is welcomed byboth the SAPS and the complainant. It willserve as a lesson to would be robbers thatcrime does not pay”.

Crime trends:Burgersfort SAPSwarns the public

One of the major crime problems in the areais robbery at a parked vehicle.According to the Burgersfort SAPS they getmany complaints where the public parkedtheir cars under trees on the roads towardsOhrigstad and Praktiseer. Sometimes theoccupants of the vehicles engage in intimate

acts and then get caught unprepared bycriminals. Not only has it happened thatthese people get robbed, but sometimesthe women in the vehicles are also raped.Popular items taken during robberiesinclude cell phones, money, jewellery andeven the vehicles.

Problem one: Lonely parked cars

There has been an increase in items stolenthrough windows or open doors incongested traffic. The SAPS warned the public to keep theirvehicle doors locked and hide valuableitems away. Do not leave laptops, wallets, cell phones and other valuable items withineasy sight from outside a vehicle. Criminalspull open doors or lean through windows

Problem two: Theft out of vehicles

and grab whatever is lying around. Placeswhere the public must be very aware of thisis where the traffic is slowed down verymuch. This makes it easy for the criminal toget away without the owner of the stolenproperty being able to properly follow him/her.Especially at month-end the public must beaware of this type of crime.

Burgersfort is a traffic nightmare. This is acause of much irritation to many drivers.Especially at month-end when the roads arevery congested people become impatient, disregard road rules and laws to make theirway through town. The SAPS has had reports of incidentswhere drivers has smashed side mirrors,

Problem three: Road rage

windscreens and one even threatenedanother driver with a sjambok. They appeal to the drivers in town to keeptheir cool, obey the road rules and giveeach other space on the road. AsChristmas time also approaches thewarnings to not drink and drive are alsoemphasised.

In Burgersfort the public can call SectorCommander, W.O. Mohlongo on 082 729

Who to call0261 or Capt. Nemaitoni on 082 462 2920with their crime related problems.

The cross towards the Khadima Centre andBurgersfort Mall is one of the major trafficproblems in town. The top and left photographs were taken onMonday afternoon. The three lanes of traffictowards town are clearly visible. The far leftone is however a left turn only lane. This isjust blatently disregarded as illustrated by thebus forcing its way over the cross to press intothe two lane traffic up front. This causes majorcongestion. Although a pointsman was on duty,it did not relief the problem in any way whilethe drivers disregarded lane rules, drovewithout using their indicators and did not worryabout general traffic rules. This is a good example of the traffic to whichthe SAPS refers in the article on the top left.

During the course of 2006 Vonnie Craffert, at thatstage the branch manager at the local Shoprite, met up with the entrepreneurial De Jager familyof PLM Boerdery. A plan was formed to establish

a local supermarket that would cater for the morediscerning shopper, offering a wide range ofproducts at excellent prices. Contact was madewith the OK Franchise, the franchise leg of

Shoprite Checkers, and an offer was made to takeover the premises of Score at the Morone Centre.Company director Vonnie Craffert says he willnever forget the 26th October 2012, the day that

the OK Grocer inBurgersfort firstopened its doors. Hugesacrifices were made bythe newly appointedstaff in establishing thestore, with manyworking day- and nightshifts in order to havethe store open in time. This not only involvedthe ordering andmerchandising of stock,as many would think, but the full spectrum ofsourcing and installinge q u i p m e n t ,establishing IT linkswith the franchise andsuppliers, the brandingof the store, setting uptrade agreements, aswell as the training ofstaff in all aspects ofrunning a modernsupermarket.According to companydirector Lodewyk deJager, the communityeasily identified the OKGrocer as being linkedto its forerunner, the

OK Bazaars which was established in 1927. Thisfits in well with the endeavour to provide oldfashioned values and stock at yesterday’s prices,in a modern environment where freshness andcustomer service is of the utmost importance. The supermarket continued to thrive, amidst manychallenges. Burgersfort, as a rural town farremoved from the supplying factories and withmany transporters having to transport stock overtwo mountain passes, meant that forwardplanning had to go into carrying stock at optimallevels.Sales Manager, Sipho Matsana who joined thecompany in 2007, says that this position hasrecently improved due to the fact that OK Groceris now receiving stock directly on a weekly basisdirectly from the Shoprite Distribution Centre inCenturion. The faster turnaround in stock andusing the Shoprite DC has positively influencedpricing and the ability to offer goods at low prices.Much has been achieved during the course of thepast six years. OK Grocer has spawned a sisterbusiness, the OK MiniMark in Burgersfort, as wellas other supermarkets in Dullstroom andeMakhazeni. Although somewhat secretive,Lodewyk de Jager mentioned that there are plansto further expand the business. These plans alsoinclude the revamp of some elements in andoutside the store, all done in order to provide agreat shopping environment for its valuedcustomers. OK Grocer, such as it has done manytimes in the past, intends to continue supportingcommunity projects and in particular, those in thecommunity that are in dire need.“We look forward to what the next six years in OKGrocer’s history will bring”

The birthday was celebrated with a large cake. Here the employees are all smiles about the six year milestone.

One of government’s responsibilities is toassist communities accomplish theiraspirations by supporting and encouragingthem to do for themselves. The community ofFetakgomo are settingan example thatcommunity cooperatives can be productiveand eradicate poverty and hunger. The farmingproject which started 52 years ago, is still goingstrong after years of struggle and hardships. The Strydkraal/Mooinfontein Project which issituated at Ga-Masha near Strydskraal, wasstarted in 1960 and according to Ms ElizabethMoraswi who is the project manager, they havecome a long way. “We started with only 72haand we were using oxen and donkeys toplough back then.In 1982 a sprinkler irrigation scheme wasinstalled by Agricultural Management Services(AMS) at the project and worked for 10 years. In 1992 AMS withdraw from the project and in1995 and 1996 the project experienced oneof the worst catastrophes ever. The systemwas flooded and washed-away and it wasdifficult to continue farming. “Some of ourfarmers lost hope and stopped farming”Moraswi said. Results started showing in 2002 when theLimpopo Department of Agriculture started tosupport and encouraged the farmers. Theyalso introduced a strategic partner who iscontracted to partner the community and theyshare 50/50 after harvesting. The majorbreakthrough was made last year when 267hawas de-bushed and ploughed,” she said.

The project employs 231 farmers, 500seasonal workers and 27 fulltime securityguards. This has moved the Limpopo MEC forAgriculture and he promised to give supportto the farmers. He applauded their successand requested the local tribal authority to makemore land available for the “green fingers” whoare mostly women and farm mealies andpotatoes. He said this during the handing overof the irrigation scheme which cost about 24million. 27 of the farmers were also awardedcertificates.“This project is one of the biggest communityprojects in Limpopo and I’m overwhelmed andimpressed to learn that more than 200 farmerswork here side by side without any hassles orsquabbles like it is happening at other projects. This proves that working together we can domore. As a department, we are going toallocate 42 tractors in Sekhukhune area andTompie Seleka Agricultural College is goingto be reopened next year,” he said. He furtherencouraged the community of Sekhukhune togo back to farming so that poverty and hungercan be alleviated. His sentiments were sharedby the mayor of Fetakgomo Cllr Kuki Sefalawho said the farm project has put themunicipality on the map. To put a cherry ontop, Fetakgomo Municipality is the onlymunicipality in Sekhukhune to have achieveda clean audit this year. Also present wereaspiring farmers from Mopani and otherdistricts who came to learn from theFetakgomo farmers.
