Global focus on eradicating poverty“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, onlylight can and hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that”. This is according toMartin Luther King Jr.

As the world tries to shift from theconcept of providing freebies to poorercommunities because of corruption andmisuse of funds by the fundedorganisations, Partners World Wide alsomoves in the same direction.

An event with the name MarketplaceRevolution 2014 to help fight poverty washeld in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the USAOn October 30 to 31.

South African delegates fromKgautswane Thusong Service Centre wereamong those who attended the event thatwas organised by Partners Worldwide.Partners Worldwide started in 1994 asPartners for Christian Development whenKenyan and American business people metto establish a loan fund for small andmedium enterprises. The Orginisation hasnow evolved into Partners Worldwide withthe mission to mobilize a global Christiannetwork that uses business as a way tocreate flourishing economic environmentsthrough partnerships with communityinstitutions that build up permanent localcapacity and catalyze entrpreneurs and jobcreators. The motto of the event was:“Business, Dignity ending poverty” and theaim of the event was to find ways toeradicate poverty through good governanceand proper mentoring.

In his opening address, the President ofPartners Worldwide, Doug Seebeck, emphasised the need to end poverty by2030. He said that the organisation hasbeen growing from strength to strengthsince its inception in 1995.

“I know you felt the power of prayer andhave travelled long distances to share yourstories of accomplishment and to plan thenext phase of our work to be done. We arefaithfully pursuing a world without poverty”he said. The event was scheduled in manysessions and the attendees were given achance to connect with other partners fromdifferent countries and shared their stories.Among others, Southern Africa wasrepresented by Swaziland, Zimbabwe,Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia andMalawi. BaxterCommunity Centre visited KgautswaneThusong Service Centre in 2011 on anexchange programme, hence the visit.

Kgautswane Thusong Service CentreManager Clara Masinga said the visit waseducational and very beneficial. “We havelearned that communities can never live onhand-outs forever. We need to start our ownsustainable initiative projects that will benefitour communities.

I would like to thank Partners Worldwidefor giving us the opportunity to learn fromour peers globally. We would also like tothank the following people; John Apol andwife Judith for hosting us during our 9 dayvisit, Louis Haveman and his wife Jan, andPaul Scholten for connecting us withMichigan institutions.

Our experience in the USA was not allwork; it was some play as well.

Living in a dump

Many Burgersfort residents feel like they are living in a rubbish dump. People dump theirhousehold rubbish almost anywhere in town with no repercussions. Nobody, including theauthorities do anything to clean up these spots in town. Platinum Gazette took thisphotograph in Aloe Ridge, but similar sites in Extension 5 have been published before, withno improvement to date. This particular dump in Aloe Ridge is proving to be a popularbreakfast spot for the baboons living on the outskirts of town. Residents fear that they willgrow too tame and start visiting the nearby homes for easy food.

Let’s explain something first.Platinum Gazette knows aboutcomfortable and uncomfortable whenyou talk about vehicles. The dailyroundabout is a little 4 x 4 beastiewith live fixed axles, and many atime a long distance trip wasattempted, without power and speed. This little thing jumps like mad at thesmallest imperfection in the road andsometimes you question your ownsanity of even thinking to go fasterthan 80 km per hour. On the dirt andin the boondocks it works its magicthough … The editor’s vehicle on theother hand is the direct opposite, alarge beast with air suspension with aride akin to a mattress, even on a 4 x4 track, but not much use in themonth-end traffic when you arelooking for a parking space. Withauthority we can declare that theIsuzu KB300LX Midnite Edition isone of the most comfortable vehicleswe have ever driven, comfort thatbelies that it is supposed to be abakkie. The 4 X 2 manual that wecould take for a short spin this weekthanks to Westvaal Steelpoort, floated over various surfaces.

Your chance for a Midnite Special

Isaiah 40 : 1 – 2 (NIV)1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly toJerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has beencompleted, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received fromthe Lord’s hand double for all her sins.

When you have bought your new bakkie, or are travelling in any othervehicle, be extra careful just before the JG Strydom Tunnel betweenOhrigstad and Hoedspruit. They are still working at the big hole, and astop and go is in place.

The fit and finish on this vehicle, decked in Maranello Red, but alsoavailable in Athenian White and StarSilver, all with black trim, leather, grille, wheels, roll-over bar and sidesteps, is impeccable (and roof rails).

In Midnite trim the bakkiecertainly looks the part and goes aswell as it looks. It is powerful andfitted with a rear diff lock tocomplement the five speed gearbox, which we feel, is just right for anyjob you want to throw at it.

And it is beautiful, which isperhaps the whole point, asmechanical specs do not really differfrom the normal KB300LX.

The Midnite special edition isavailable in 4 x 4 manual, 4 x 2 autoand 4 x 2 manual and only a limitednumber will be available.

During our time with the bakkie, not a single gripe surfaced until thedriver’s side sun shield was openedand lo and behold, no mirror …

The vehicle sells north of R400000 and only a limited quantity willbe available. So, phone WestvaalSteelpoort as soon as you have thechance before every one is sold.
