What happened in Ga-Manoke?An angry group of residents decended onBurgerfort Police Station on Thursday tovent their anger ove alleged Policebrutality in the village adjacent toBurgersfort.
According to residents 21-year old MrKatlego Aziz died without any reason froma shot fired by a Policeman last weekSaturday. One of the leaders of the angrygroup who marched to the Police Stationtold Platinum Gazette that Mr Aziz andfour friends celebrated his birthday. Theydrove with a car to Burgersfort where theyallegedly crossed an orange traffic lightand went to a filling station.
A Police vehicle followed them andsearched their car at the filling stationbecause they presumably lookedsuspicious. When they finished theirbusiness at the filling station they returnedto Ga-Manoke. Along the way the Policeallegedly started following them and onePolice vehicle was joined by two others. The took fright and fled to their homewhere they jumped out of their vehicle. The Police also disembearked from theirvehicles and started shooting at them.
Mr Aziz was fatally wounded, while oneof his friends were injured.
The Police say no, that is not the wholestory, there was a shootout and the Police
only returned the fire of the five youngmen. The residents of Ga-Manoke say ontheir hand, it is untrue that the young menhad firearms and they certainly did notshoot at the Police.
Whatever the case the marchershanded a memorandum to the Police onThursday. In the memorandum they say itseems that it is as if the Police have turnedtheir village ionto a shooting range, usinglive ammunition. They cited two othercases when a child allegedly died and onewas injured by Police bullets in the past, with the cases getting nowhere because ofwhat they think are corruption.
The memorandum also mentionesanother case that had been abandoned. This time they demand that Police muststart respecting their lives, that those whofired the shots that claimed Mr Aziz mustbe detained without bail and the Policeshould not enter the village unless underthe auspices of the the tribal authority andCommunity Policing Forum.
They also demand that the cases bereferred to the Independent ComplaintsDirectorate for investigation with dailyprogress reports to the families. Thememorandum was received by liuetenantcolonel Mathabatha before the marchersreturned peacefully to their village.
Left: Mr Mandla Mabuza negotiating on behalf of the marchers with Police highbrass before the memorandum is received and signed (below).

Happy Birthday tothe Mayor
On Thursday, 11 November GTM mayor, Cllr. RalepaneMamekoa (in the centre on photograph below) turned 62.His executive committee and staff of the municipality surprisedhim with three birthday cakes and a party. He told Platinum Gazette that he started suspecting somethingwas up when he suggested another date for a meeting and allkinds of excuses were used to keep it on the 11th.
Rebuildingafter the stormStormy weather with high speed windswreaked havoc in many places during the lastweek.Last week Thursday, roofs were damaged inSteelpoort and on Friday a wind blew over awall and lifted the corrugated iron onconstruction sites along the R37 in MashifanePark. This week, workers started rebuildingthe wall with rain regularly approaching inthe afternoons.
Carwash going awashA carwash that was recently constructed onthe sidewalk area opposite OK Minimarketat Lion’s Rock was the cause of majorflooding over the road during a storm onWednesday afternoon.Residents of Lion’s Rock have complainedat the Modikwa Mine housing departmentabout the carwash, stating that they feelthat it is creating opportunity for criminalelements to get close to the homes. They
also feared for flooding as the storm waterdrainage system was seriously disturbed. Onereader who has written a letter to PlatinumGazette said that complaints were also lodgedwith the municipality, but no response wasreceived.Apart from all the other complaints the maincause for concern for many is the fact that largerocks and gravel get pushed into the road andcan cause accidents during heavy rain such as
Wednesday. Part of the contruction next to OK Minimarket is a carwash. This is due to open in about one month’s time.

Letters / Briewe
“The future, according to some scientists, will be exactly like the past, only far moreexpensive.” - John Sladek
Please allow me to take this opportunity towish all learners and students good luckwith their year-end examinations.
I sincerely hope that those who workedhard will reap the fruits of the efforts. Itwould be a good thing if the Grade 12results improve in spite of the long Juneholidays we have had plus the teachers’industrial action. Yet with hard workeverything is possible.
It is often this time of the year andimmediately after the release of matricresults where our government officialsseem to be serious about education. Butduring the year they disappear. Maybethis is how politicians operate. And schoolsseem to put more emphasis on the Grade12s at the expense of all the other grades.A foundation should be laid as early asgrade ten if not before that, instead ofexpecting miracles in Grade 12.
What is surprising is that when resultsare not good nobody agrees to take theblame but instead fingers are pointed inall directions where teachers are at thereceiving end. As a teacher I get seriously
disturbed when I walk into a circuit officeand find it looks like a rubbish dumpwhere papers are just lying around. Thiscan only mean one thing: somebody doesnot give a damn.
Something that nearly furtherdisturbed our learners was COSAS’sirrational, illusive and irresponsibledemands for pass one pass all, free 25percent marks and the deferring orcancellation of the preliminary exams.Despite all these, one hopes against hopethat things go well with our children intheir exams.
With the government’s WinterEnrichment Programme, extra lessons onradio and television, supplements in thenewspapers, self-study guides, springholidays classes and many otherendeavours, we hope and wish that theclass of 2010 will emerge victorious.
A victory and success by the class of2010 will be a victory and success for all.
