Please join us in prayer this week for :
The Epiphany of the Lord Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church January 6, 2019
From the Pastor:
Remember to continue to rejoice in the Lord! His Incarnation can continue to give us life as we meditate even during the busy-ness of our days on the Christ Child and the Holy Family and how much peace they can bring us if we truly let them be a part of our life. Think about Nazareth and their life together. Think about how it is the wise who truly do seek this deepest reality for fullest freedom in life.
Here’s a meditation from St. Leo the Great which might help us this Sunday and throughout the week, to be closer to the Christ Child and Mary and Joseph:
O Christ, in the Magi adoring you we recognize the first fruits of our calling and our faith. With exultant soul we celebrate the beginning of that blessed hope. From this day we begin to enter upon an eternal inheritance; from this day there lies open to us the hidden meaning of those Scriptures that refer to you. The truth which the Jews in their blindness rejected, sheds its light upon all nations. Therefore let this most holy day be honored among us, this day on which you manifest yourself as Author of our salvation; you, whom the Magi adored as an infant in the manger, we adore omnipotent in heaven. And as they brought forth from among their treasures mystical gifts, we also desire to search our hearts for something fit to offer you.
God bless you this week and always, my fellow beloved children of God! Happy Epiphany!
With love and prayers,
Fr. Francis

Electronic Giving is a convenient, consistent way to help our church grow.
Consider scheduling a recurring electronic contribution today. It’s easy! You will no longer need to write out checks and pre-pare envelopes every week. Even when travel, weather, illness or other circumstances prevent you from attending Mass your elec-tronic contributions will continue to be received on an uninter-rupted basis.
Hesitating to make your weekly donation on – line because it feels awkward not to have an envelope for the basket?? Problem solved !!!On-line donors are invited to pick up an “On-Line donor card” in the back of the pews when coming for Mass and then put it in the basket as it comes by. The cards will be retrieved and reused each week—and they might encourage others to think about On-Line giving!
Visit our church website OLSHtappan.com or stop in the parish office to set up recurring online contribu-tions from either a bank account or credit card.

Remembering those we love….
Consider a Memorial Donation of Altar Bread and Wine, or a Memorial Donation for Altar Flowers for a week. Flowers will be placed on the altar in the main Church for the weekend and then moved to the Chapel for weekday Masses. The name of your loved one along with the name of the person mak-
ing the request will be printed in the Bulletin and they will be remembered in a special way by the Priests as they celebrate Mass. We will also continue to take requests for the Taber-nacle Candle Memorials. Please call the Parish Office (359-1230) for more information

St. Raymond of Pennafort, Patron Saint of Canonists (Feast Day -
January 7) Born in Spain, St. Raymond was a relative of the King of
Aragon. From childhood he had a tender love and devotion to the
Blessed Mother. He finished his studies at an early age, and be-
came a famous teacher. He then gave up all his honors and en-
tered the Order of the Dominicans. St. Raymond was very humble
and very close to God. He did much penance and was so good and
kind that he won many sinners to God. With King James of Aragon
and St. Peter Nolasco he founded the Order of Our Lady of Ran-
som. The brave religious of this Order devoted themselves to sav-
ing poor Christians captured by the Moors.
Once he went with King James to the Island of Majorca to preach
about Jesus. King James was a man of great qualities, but he let
himself be ruled by passions. There on the Island, too, he was giv-
ing bad example. The Saint commanded him to send the wom-
an away. The King said he would, but he did not keep his promise.
So St. Raymond decided to leave the Island. The King declared he
would punish any ship captain who brought the Saint back to Bar-
celona. Putting all his trust in God, Saint Raymond spread his cloak
upon the water, tied up one corner of it to a stick for a sail, made
the Sign of the Cross, stepped onto the cloak, and sailed along for
six hours until he reached Barcelona. This miracle moved the King.
He was sorry for what he had done, and he became a true follow-
er of St. Raymond. St. Raymond was one hundred years old at
the time of his death

9 Quotes to Explain, “Who Are the Magi?”
1. “The magi, as you know, were wise men—wonderfully wise men—who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents.” –The Gift of the Magi, O. Henry
2. “Though many kings of the Jews had been born and died, none of them did the Magi seek to adore. And so they who came from a dis-tant foreign land to a kingdom that was entirely strange to them…But they had learnt that such a King was born that by adoring Him they might be sure of obtaining from Him the salvation which is of God.”
– Saint Augustine
3. “If the Magi had come in search of an earthly King, they would have been disconcerted at finding that they had taken the trouble to come such a long way for nothing. Consequently they would have neither adored nor offered gifts. But since they sought a heavenly King, though they found in Him no signs of royal pre-eminence, yet, content with the testimony of the star alone, they adored: for they saw a man, and they acknowledged God.” –Saint John Chrysostom
4. “But if with careful thought we wish to see how their threefold kind of gift is also offered by all who come to Christ with the foot of faith, is not the same offering repeated in the hearts of true believ-ers? For he that acknowledges Christ the King of the universe brings gold from the treasure of his heart: he that believes the Only-begotten of God to have united man’s true nature to Himself, offers myrrh; and he that confesses Him in no wise inferior to the Father’s majesty, worships Him in a manner with incense.”
–Pope Saint Leo the Great
5. “The men of whom Matthew speaks were not just astronomers. They were ‘wise.’ They represent the inner dynamic of religion to-wards self-transcendence, which involves a search for truth, a search for the true God and hence ‘philosophy’ in the original sense of the word. Wisdom, then, serves to purify the message of “science”: the rationality of that message does not remain at the level of the intel-lectual knowledge, but seeks understanding in its fullness, and so raises reason to its loftiest possibilities.”–Pope Benedict XVI, Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives
6. “Coming to Bethlehem, they found ‘the child with Mary His moth-er’. After that of Jerusalem, this was their second great temptation: to reject this smallness. But instead, ‘they fell down and worshiped Him’, offering him their precious symbolic gifts. Again, it is the grace of the Holy Spirit which assists them. That grace, which through the star had called them and led them along the way, now lets them en-ter into the mystery.” –Pope Francis, Homily of 6 January 2014
7. “When they reached Bethlehem, the Magi adored the divine Child and offered him symbolic gifts, becoming forerunners of the peoples and nations which down the centuries never cease to seek and meet Christ.” –Pope John Paul II, Homily of 6 January 1996
8. “And thus we come to the star. What type of star was that which the Magi saw and followed? Throughout the centuries this question has been the object of discussions among astronomers. Kepler, for example, held that it was a “nova” or a “supernova,” that is, one of those stars that normally emanate a weak light, but which can have unexpectedly a violent internal explosion that produces an exception-al light. Certainly, interesting things, but which do not lead us to what is essential in order to understand that star….The universe is not the result of chance, as some would have us believe. Contemplating it, we are invited to read in it something profound: the wisdom of the Creator, the inexhaustible imagination of God, his infinite love for us.”–Pope Benedict XVI, Homily of 6 January 2011
9. “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” –Matthew 2:2

Prayer for Epiphany
Dear Jesus,
though a newborn, the wise men knew your
greatness.
On a hint from the heavens,
they traveled far from their places of comfort
so that they could honor you.
From their belief in your divinity,
they gave amazing gifts, offerings that symbol-
ized
your life, power, and even your death.
And because of a dream in the night,
they altered their well-laid plans to return
home
