Thank you to the Bath Street families for your patience during the last week or so when the new pathway was being installed at the Hartley Street entrance to the campus. This project has been talked about for some time and, as fate would have it, the timing of its construction coincided with the fitting of the new shade structures, also at Bath Street. As a consequence, with so many workmen on site, the Hartley Street entrance, and access to the Uniform Shop, became unavailable for a couple of days. Hopefully pedestrians will quickly adjust to the new arrangements. Interim reports for students at the Sadadeen and Traeger campuses have been dispatched, while the Bath Street students portfolios and journals will also be sent home to parents. These documents will certainly be very helpful for the parent/teacher meetings which are scheduled for early in the new term. Our College Boys Basketball side will head off to Newcastle on the weekend to participate in the annual national Marist Carnival. Mr. Peter Augustin (manager) and Mr. Eli Melky (coach) will accompany the boys. We wish them well; they will return to Alice Springs on Thursday, 7 th April. Mr Melky has been working with the students for several months and they have made plenty of solid progress. The carnival usually provides some of the best talent in the country, so our boys will need to work well together to give of their best against some very strong opposition. We wish them a safe, enjoyable and successful trip. Classes conclude today for all students. As we look back over the term, we have much to be thankful for, and there are lots of indications that the students have made a very productive start to the academic year. The whole school Mass, the school retreats and reflection days, the swimming carnivals, the fundraising activities, the school photographs, local excursions, parent gatherings, barbecues, and the Lenten season, have all added different flavours to our daily teaching and learning programme. Thank you to the Bath Street families for your patience during the last week or so when the new pathway was being installed at the Hartley Street entrance to the campus. This project has been talked about for some time and, as fate would have it, the timing of its construction

coincided with the fitting of the new shade structures, also at Bath Street.

We wish them well; they will return to Alice Springs on Thursday, 7th April. Reflection

Thanks everybody for your support of the College over the past term. I wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday. Classes will resume for Term Two on Tuesday 12th April. Please note that Holy Week commences during the second week of the new term with Palm Sunday on 17th April. The Easter Triduum, from Good Friday through to Easter Sunday, then occurs from 22nd-24th April, followed by two public holidays, encompassing Anzac Day and the normal Easter long weekend. The May Day long weekend follows, the next week, so the first four weeks of term will all be short teaching weeks.

Best wishes

Br Paul Gilchrist Principal

Today 31st March is the last day for Back to School Voucher Redemption No exceptions can be made.

for Families

Jesus wanted the disciples to love one another and all followers with a binding love.

It is this same kind of love that binds families together. When other people turn their backs and walk away, it is symbolic of Jesus' love that families are bound by a love incomparable anywhere else in our own experience.

We fail at times, but rarely in any other setting do we see anything close to the unconditional love God has for us, as we see in the love parents show their children.

REMEMBER: There are no classes, tomorrow, Friday April 1st. (This is not an April Fool s joke)

This week sees us moving toward the fourth Sunday of Lent, where the Gospel tells the story of the man who was blind from birth.

PROJECT COMPASSION We continue to think of the people for whom Project Compassion is organised. The aim is of course to raise money, but also to give the children an understanding of how lucky they are compared to others in the world. Therefore, I have a little task for the children over the break!

Keep count of the times you get to enjoy take-away food over the break. If you can, bring 20c to school for each time you had this privilege.

SCHOOL HEALTH SURVEILLANCE PROCESS Each Transition student has been issued with a letter of explanation and an Enrolment Form for the School Health Surveillance Process. Those choosing to take advantage of the Process will be contacted in due course about when this will take place.

YEAR 11 TOURISM EXCURSION REPORT On the 15th of March the Year 11 Tourism Group, as part of their course went out to Undoolya Station; an iconographic cattle station literally on the town boundaries of Alice Springs. We were picked up from the school at the start of the day by Robert Frost, joint proprietor of the unique Outback Quad Adventures . Outback Quad Adventures is a unique tour company that offers a range of tours from the two and a half hour Quad Rush tour to the Overnight Quad Experience. The business operates out of the station and is run by both Kathy and Rob Frost, during the regional Alice Springs tourist season (the on season). Tours are run daily and cater for tourists and locals alike.

The class of four students experienced an informative drive out to the station, where Rob told the group of the story of Undoolya Station, and the Hayes Family. On the way, students were blessed with the lush scenery provided by the recent rains. Just out of town we saw a healthy looking bearded dragon sunning itself in the morning sun.

Page 5: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College News

After disembarking from the bus, the class (including myself) was briefed on the rules and safety expectations (no passing, or carrying on, as it is unsafe). We then adorned ourselves with a helmet each and proceeded out to the quad bikes. At the bikes we were thoroughly instructed as to the workings of the bike and with a turn of the key we were off.

The students had a great time. There were some memorable times. Going up the creek, that a few days before was metres above what it was. Usually this creek is bone dry (on the surface) and this is where you get to open the bike up a bit on the dry creek bed. As said there were memorable moments best told by the students.

The excursion/tour was part of the student s tourism course (case study) where students critically analyse a local tourism business s sustainability.

More tours are planned for the year, most notably the 3 day tour with Emu Run out to Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and Kings Canyon.

ALICE SPRINGS REGIONAL SITTINGS On Wednesday March 30th 2011, Year 9 SOSE students of Miss Bonney and Mr Boyce s classes attended a parliamentary sitting of the Northern Territory Parliament at the Alice Springs Convention Centre. The purpose of this excursion was for students to witness and identify key features of Australia s Government. During this time, students were informed about the structure of the Lower House, and some students were able to dress in the formal attire worn by members of the Lower House. Overall, the students enjoyed and were enlightened by the experience; with many surprised at how fellow politicians interact with each other.

Campus News: Traeger TOMORROW,APRIL 1ST IS A PUPIL FREE DAY

CARITAS For the past few weeks Traeger Campus have been participating in some worthwhile Caritas Fundraising activities.

The Latin word Caritas means love and compassion. So it is appropriate that during Lent we think of others and make a real effort to raise some money to go towards assisting those in need. Caritas projects range from developing sustainability programs in poverty stricken areas to delivering aid quickly and efficiently around the world.

The Year 5 classes sold Pancakes for Shrove Tuesday, the Year 6's had a bake sale at the Swimming Carnival and the Year 7's held a movie day. This week the Year 8 classes are having a 'Crazy Hair Day' as well as Year 7 teacher (Mr Curnow) is shaving his head for a gold coin donation from each student. After the school break the Specialist teachers and the Special Education Unit will have some fun Easter activities to participate in! Thank you so much for your support and donations towards such a worthy cause. Let's keep the spirit of Lent alive and see if OLSH Traeger can raise some significant funds.

Kind regards, Kathryn REC
