Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church 100 Broad Street, Hilltown, PA 18927
May 10, 2020
My Dear Parishioners,
I pray that all of you are well, and to our mothers, I wish you a very happy Mother’s Day
weekend!
Please remember that tomorrow, Mother’s Day, May 10, at 12noon, we will have an
outdoor May Crowning with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Because of social
distancing requirements, all are asked to remain in their cars and wear their masks.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we are really celebrating love. I pray that all of our
mothers still with us have a lovely day, and I pray that all of our mothers who have gone before
us now share in the love of the Redeemer.
At our Facebook Live Mass this weekend, I will remember all of our mothers, living and
dead, and I will offer a special blessing to mothers.
I would like to take a moment to congratulate this spring’s SASH CYO award winners:
Our SASH CYO LEADERSHIP AWARD is given to an 8th grade boy and girl who exemplifies
the ideals set forth by the Archdiocese CYO mission statement by assisting parish leadership in
nourishing the emotional, spiritual, social and physical needs of the parish and becoming a
responsible member of their faith community.
o The 8th Grade Boy’s Leadership Award is Ian Gramlich
o The 8th Grade Girl’s Leadership Award is Julia Reavy
The Pat Miller Award is awarded to an 8th grade female basketball player who has excelled in
leadership on and off the basketball court, provided service to the community, and maintained high
academic standards.
o This year’s Pat Miller Award is jointly given to Ava Fantaskey and Anna Croyle
The Rich Trotter Award is awarded to an 8th grade male basketball player who has excelled in
leadership on and off the basketball court, provided service to the community, and maintained high
academic standards.
o This year’s Rich Trotter Award is jointly given to Gavin McQuillen and David Biehl
We look forward to the day when we can all be together to properly acknowledge their accomplishments.
Again, congratulations and thank you for your enthusiasm and faithfulness.
This week we will have the first installment of a new section:
Ask Father Pawelko
In this section, I will try to answer some of your questions pertaining to the
Sacred Liturgy and Sacred Scriptures. So, please send me some questions (no names
will be used, just the questions). This week’s questions are:
When we sign ourselves before the Gospel, what prayer should we be saying?
As we sign our foreheads, our months, and our hearts, we should be praying: May the Word of the Lord
be on my mind, on my lips, and in my heart.
Why does a priest wash his hands at the preparation of the gifts?
Some may think that this gesture has something to do with Pontius Pilate’s washing of his hands, but,
in fact, it doesn’t. It actually started in the early church for very practical reasons: so that clean hands
would be handling and distributing the Holy Eucharist. Later, the gesture became “spiritualized” and
a prayer was added to the washing of the hands: Lord, wash away my iniquity and cleanse me of my
sins.
On this special weekend, I have included a poem that I like entitled “Nobody Knows but
Mother” and that beautiful poem to our Blessed Mother entitled “Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue.” I
have also included a teaching on the power of God’s love by St. Augustine, a Father of the Church.
Lastly, let us continue to pray our Rosaries and our Chaplets for all those infected with
Coronavirus, for first responders, for the unemployed, and for the day when we can all be together
again to celebrate the Eucharist.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, pray for us!
Fr. Michael J. Pawelko
Nobody Knows But Mother Poet: Unknown
Nobody knows of the work it makes
To keep the home together,
Nobody knows of the steps it takes,
Nobody knows - but mother.
Nobody listens to childish woes,
Which kisses only smother;
Nobody's pained by naughty blows,
Nobody - only mother.
Nobody knows of the sleepless care
Bestowed on baby brother;
Nobody knows of the tender prayer,
Nobody - only mother.
Nobody knows of the lessons taught
Of loving one another;
Nobody knows of the patience sought,
Nobody - only mother.
Nobody knows of the anxious fears,
Lest darlings may not weather
The storm of life in after years,
Nobody knows - but mother.
Nobody kneels at the throne above
To thank the Heavenly Father
For that sweetest gift - a mother's love;
Nobody can - but mother.
Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue
Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue
Lovely Lady dressed in blue -------
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
Tell me what to say!
Did you lift Him up, sometimes,
Gently on your knee?
Did you sing to Him the way
Mother does to me?
Did you hold His hand at night?
Did you ever try
Telling stories of the world?
O! And did He cry?
Do you really think He cares
If I tell Him things -------
Little things that happen? And
Do the Angels' wings
Make a noise? And can He hear
Me if I speak low?
Does He understand me now?
Tell me -------for you know.
Lovely Lady dressed in blue -------
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
And you know the way.
The Power of God’s Love
From a treatise on John by St Augustine
The Lord Jesus declares that he is giving his disciples a new commandment, that they should love
one another: I give you a new commandment: love one another.
But wasn’t this commandment already part of the ancient law of God, where it is written You shall
love your neighbour as yourself? Why, then, is it called a new one by the Lord, when it is really so old? Is
it new because he has divested us of our old humanity and clothed us with the new? It is true that love
renews those who listen to it (or rather, those who act in obedience to it) but it is that particular love which
the Lord distinguished from all carnal affection by adding love one another as I have loved you.
This is the love that renews us, making us new men, heirs of the New Testament, singers of the new
song. It was this love, my beloved brethren, that renewed the patriarchs and prophets of old, and later
renewed the blessed apostles. This is the love that is now renewing the nations, and from among the
universal race of man, which overspreads the whole world, is making and gathering together a new people,
the body of the newly-married spouse of the only-begotten Son of God. Of her the Song of Songs says, Who
is she who is coming up, clothed in white? Clothed in white because she has been renewed; and how else
can she have been renewed but by the new commandment?
Because of this, the members of the people of God have a mutual interest in one another; and if one
member suffers then all the members suffer with it; and if one member is honored then all the members
rejoice with it. For this they hear and this they observe: I give you a new commandment: love one
another: not as people who pretend to love in order to corrupt one another, nor indeed as people love one
another genuinely but in a human way.
Rather, they love one another as those who belong to God. All of them are children of the Most High
and consequently brethren of his only Son. They share with each other the love with which he leads them
to the end that will bring them fulfilment and the true satisfaction of their real desires. For when God is all
in all, there is no desire that is unfulfilled.
This love is bestowed on us by him who said, Just as I have loved you, you also must love one
another. He loved us so that we should love one another. By loving us he bound us to one another in mutual
love, and by this gentle bond united us into the body of which he is the most noble Head.
