Students’ Learning Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School focused on providing effective environment, teachers, structures, resources and tools to support all our Learners to achieve their best. Our Strategic Plan continues to focus the Board on supporting our Learners. In establishing this plan the Board has continued and focused the goals outlined in previous Strategic Plan. Our focus remains committed to Empowering our Learners to thrive in the 21st Century. This is reflected in these comments included in the 2015 ERO review report for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School:

“Highly effective school processes support a clear vision for improving outcomes for learners. The school’s strategic direction, planning and student achievement targets are purposefully aligned. Targeted goal setting is robust and appropriately focused on students at risk of not achieving well. … Teachers make effective use of achievement data to plan and implement relevant programmes to support students’ learning and progress. The board of trustees receives regular information about student achievement. Trustees make strategic and responsive resourcing decisions based on well-analysed data.”

And related to curriculum: “The school’s broad and well designed curriculum is effective in promoting and supporting student learning. Curriculum programmes are responsive to students’ interests and learning needs. Students show themselves to be competent, confident and focused in their learning. They take pride in their school and actively engage in the wide variety of extra activities offered, including sporting events, music and drama opportunities. Students have access to a wide range of curriculum resources and tools to support their learning. Digital devices are used as an effective communication tool between home and school.”

Student Engagement Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School recognises the importance of Student Engagement in support of effective learning and achievement. Teachers and Management monitor attendance and attentiveness to ensure our students are able to learn effectively, and the Board receives reports on attendance levels. Actions are implemented to support continued engagement and enjoyment of learning.

This is reflected in these comments included in the 2015 ERO review report for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School:

“Collaborative and respectful learning partnerships are highly evident among staff, students, parents and the community. Processes for reporting to parents are well developed and useful. Students work with teachers to share information about their learning with their parents/whānau. Students are becoming knowledgeable about their own learning and are increasingly setting goals to extend their learning. Senior leaders agree that students could be further supported to become self-directed learners, through more explicit understanding of their progress and achievement.”

Review of Charter and Consultation

In 2015 the Board undertook a formal review of the Charter and consulted with the School Community on the priorities for the education of their children. All parents of currently enrolled students and new families for 2016 were able to provide input. In reviewing the Charter and setting the direction for the next Strategic Plan (through 2020), the Board included a number of inputs. These included:

• Education Review Office review report, completed in June 2015; • Catholic Schools Office review report, confirmed in May 2015; • progress against the Board’s strategic priorities over the term of the current board; • feedback and priorities obtained from community consultation – both a community presentation held on 26

August and online survey providing feedback, priorities and preferences; and • current resources available to the Board – funding, staffing and community.

This Charter is the output of this work and sets the direction for the School for the next 5 years.

School Organisation and Structures

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School continues to evolve the organization and structures that can best support our Learners. Our school remains under the leadership of our Principal, Rosemary Kemp. The new leadership team structure established in 2015 will continue, with the roles of Deputy Principal (also Innovative Learning Practice (ILP) Leader), Assistant Principal (also Curriculum Leader) and Director of Religious Studies. In addition, the E-Learning Co-ordinator role introduced in 2015 will continue – to both support our children with their digital learning and to support staff in further embedding digital technology into their teaching practice. As the school’s facility development progresses 2016 will see the introduction of two team leaders – for the Junior and Senior School. In addition, with the employment of a Beginning Teacher, we have one staff member acting as a Tutor Teacher. More information on the School’s operational organisation and structures are available in the 2016 Information Booklet and the School’s Annual Plan. Organisation was addressed in the following comments from the 2015 ERO review report for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School:

“The school continues to benefit from the principal’s professional leadership. She is well respected by staff, parents and students. The principal and deputy principal promote high levels of collegial trust, recognising teacher’s strengths and offering leadership opportunities to staff. Senior leaders, teachers and support staff have respectful and collaborative professional relationships. Self review is systematic and purposeful. Community members, staff and students provide multiple perspectives in school review. The school’s values and culture, and community engagement and relationships, provide a sound foundation for continually improving outcomes for students.”

Māori Dimensions and Cultural Diversity

The principles of the Treaty of Waitangi – Partnership, Protection and Participation – are central to the Board’s planning. This is reflected in the revision to our Treaty of Waitangi Policy in June 2014. The Board highlights the following comments from the 2015 ERO review report for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School:

The school shows commitment to supporting Maori student success. There are high expectations that staff use bicultural practices and acknowledge Māori perspectives. These expectations are clearly stated in the curriculum, teacher’s performance appraisal and the school values. Students in Years 5 and 6 are able to attend kapa haka, which the school values and celebrates. Students take lead roles in karakia and waiata. They talk of their pride when performing for the school and their enthusiasm about learning te reo Māori and about Māori culture. Tuakana/teina relationships are evident in students’ interactions and cooperative learning activities. A valued part of the curriculum is developing students’ knowledge and sharing of their pepeha. School leaders and staff continue to participate in professional learning to develop their knowledge of and confidence in using te reo Māori me ōna tikanga. They take advantage of Ka Hikitia and Tātaiako, Ministry of Education resources, to guide teachers’ curriculum planning and performance appraisals.

Special Character In 2015 the Board received the Catholic Schools’ Office review report. The review affirmed the importance and commitment the School has to its Special Character, the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the values of our Catherine McAuley and her Mercy sisters who founded the college. The Board regularly reviews and supports activities that address the three key dimensions of:

• Catholic Community: Te Iwi Whanui Katorika • Pastoral Care: Manaakitanga • Religious Education: Te Whakaakoranga Whakapono

The Board highlights the following staff comment included in the report as reflective of the approach we take in our role of governing the school:

“We promote a caring, calm and peaceful attitude of respect throughout the school from staff, students and parents. We strive everyday to be ‘Better than Before’ and foster a Catholic community with a love of learning” (Staff questionnaire comment).

We also noted the following comment of the review team on the progress the School is continually making towards our Vision:

The senior children interviewed by the reviewers are living testament that the school is achieving what the community aspires to in their Vision Statement:

“Ignite in the children the passion for limitless learning, navigated by Catholic Values.”.

Summary The school is justifiably proud of students’ successes. Achievement information indicates that most students achieve at high levels in reading, writing and mathematics in relation to the National Standards. School data show that Māori and Pacific students are achieving at similar levels as other students.
