Back @ Bentleigh

For the last four weeks Hartzer Group 2 Issoudun students have been immersed in the Back @ Bentleigh program (B@B). The students have been engaged in a multitude of different activities including learning stories of immigration, researching “Is there blood on your shirt?” - an enquiry project into the manufacture of clothing in Bangladesh, as well as art and sport activities. They have collected data on immigrant backgrounds, have learnt about the difference between self and peer assessment, completing both categories of assessment in their work.

The pathways aspect of the program saw students completing tasks toward the VET Certificate in Vocational Preparation. They have learnt how to make a film, how to complete the process of editing having researched ingredients needed for a multi-cultural Asian meal, and have participated in the preparation of food for a final celebration.

There have also been table tennis tournaments, tai chi, Bollywood dancing and Tae Kwon Do classes. Some student reflections have included the following comments:

• The Back at Bentleigh program has been a very exciting time at OLSH.

• I like the structure of the B@B program, as we are always doing different activities. • We have been enjoying the B@B program. It is interesting to learn about Asian

culture and immigration.

• The lessons we have had during these two weeks have been engaging and interesting.

• Glad we are studying about immigration – it is important to know about this. • We really like how the program is chilled.

Additionally, this program has been instrumental in encouraging student input into the development and the improvement of the program. I was sent the following email by some enterprising students:

Dear Ms Tickyj

Issoudun A has some extra feedback on the B@B program. We appreciate all the effort that has been put into this program, however we would like to have some input into the program.

We suggest that there should be a whole year level forum in the next week or so. Our class has many ideas and suggestions that we think will benefit this program. We believe that a forum will be great as our ideas can be expressed. Issoudun A have already approached some of our SAILS teachers about the improvements that could be made to this program in the near future.

A whole group forum has been held to take on board the suggestions that students have made.

Overall this program has been challenging and involving.

Something that we strive for on regular basis at OLSH College, I congratulate all Issoudun students and SAILS staff on their commitment and enthusiasm.

Round 4 Debating News!

All was quiet at OLSH in the midst of assessments and exams held in the past few weeks. However, at Caulfield Grammar School, OLSH debaters proved that they still had the gift of the gab! Our Senior team once again faced a secret topic against Presentation College Windsor (PCW) arguing for the decriminalisation of recreational drugs. Although PCW were missing one debater - which resulted in an automatic victory for OLSH - the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) still allowed the girls to engage in a fierce debate! And fierce they were! OLSH girls may not have necessarily agreed with the topic but they certainly convinced the adjudicator and their audience with the validity of their points and their passionate delivery. Martha O’Hagan, the third speaker from OLSH, was awarded Best Speaker.

Our Junior debating teams lost in close battles against Kilvington Grammar School and McKinnon Secondary College. The parents of one Year 8 student expressed their pride in the progression of the debaters. They commented that the team’s speeches, including their rebuttals, had more substance and relevance, and that their manner had vastly improved. OLSH girls should be proud of their achievements! We certainly are proud of them! Miss Candice Saliba Debating and Public Speaking Coordinator

Knitting for Ethiopia Groups of Issoudun students at Hartzer and Bentleigh have been busily knitting squares to make into shawls for patients at the Hamlin Fistula Clinic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The hospital, founded by Australian doctor Catherine Hamlin in 1974, provides treatment for young women with childbirth injuries which result in incontinence. A simple surgical procedure is carried out which allows these women to resume their normal lives instead of being treated as outcasts. On arrival at the hospital each patient is given a shawl which is hers to keep. Our shawls will be completed by the end of July to be sent to Ethiopia. Mrs Bernadette Renwick Staff Member

Canberra Capers On Tuesday, 28 May, the Year 12 students set off to the Sandown Centre for the RYDA (road safety) excursion. A significant component of the Issoudun Residential program is the completion of an individual research assignment in which the girls must respond to the ‘big question’: Canberra is the nation’s capital; does it meet the needs of the Australian people? Most of the girls had not visited Canberra before, so our two day trip gave them a starting point for their research. Divided into three groups, the girls set out to formulate further questions based on science and sport; arts and architecture; and history and politics. Visits to the Australian Institute of Sport, the Royal Australian Mint and the CSIRO gave the first group an interesting insight to the promotion of sports and the role of scientific research in Australia. Group 2 headed off to the National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery and the Carillon on Lake Burley Griffin. The girls studying Canberra from an historical and political perspective visited the National Museum of Australia, the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery, the Aboriginal tent embassy, ANZAC Avenue and finally, a tour of the embassies with Group 2. The following day, we all visited Parliament House, The Australian War Memorial and the Museum of Democracy. The focus of the day was on the parliamentary system; the importance of democracy; and remembering those who have served Australia in wars. The day concluded with a mock debate in Old Parliament House (Museum of Democracy). The girls took on the roles of Prime Minister Bob Hawke (Laura Webb), Leader of the Opposition, Andrew Peacock (Alysha Jones) and a number of other parliamentarians involved in the 1983 debate over the Franklin River Dam. The Speaker (Josie Cappadona), kept the parliamentarians in line, ably assisted by the clerk (Laura de Grazia). Interjections of “Hear! Hear!”, “Balderdash!” and “Shame!” brought the debate to life.

History and politics students at the National Museum of Australia

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist parents in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per eligible student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the school upon completion of the Hartzer experience. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program.

Staff Professional Learning at OLSH

Michelle Fenton recently attended a professional learning day that comprehensively explored teaching Drama in the Australian Curriculum: The day involved dealing creatively with the new structure; incorporating the cross-curricular priorities - sustainability, indigenous traditions and our Asian context; and modelling and trialling of classroom activities relevant to the Australian Curriculum. The day was highly interactive and the sharing of resources a highlight. Adele Schocker attended the VATE Conference for Early Career Teachers. The workshops were interactive and engaging. Adele collected some wonderful new media resources to share with our Year 10 English students to make the language analysis unit more exciting and entertaining. The current OLSH Year 10 English curriculum will be modified to make use of these valuable resources. Presenter John Williams, a very experienced VCE English teacher provided an overview of the study design for new teachers and offered valuable tips and tools to help teachers to address more challenging aspects of the VCE English course. There was an opportunity to hear from a panel of graduate English teachers from a variety of schools across the state. Adele found it reassuring to hear that the panel members had also found their early years of teaching challenging and overwhelming at times! The day ended with a workshop on teaching narrative writing skills, which involved attendees devising plots and characters and producing wild and wonderful stories! While working step by step through the writing process, the workshop leader focused on developing rich characters to engage readers. Sharing this approach to story writing with the OLSH junior classes will help to demystify creative writing, giving all students an opportunity to develop their imaginative writing skills. Amy Mather also attended the VATE Early Career Teachers and Co-ordinators Conference. Amy found it to be an excellent day with the focus on how to galvanise, inspire and lead a team of varied, passionate teachers that always make up the English department. Advice was shared, there were stories to make your toes curl, and some invaluable networking, that re-energised everyone there and allowed for a brief respite in a demanding role that rarely affords time for reflection. Tony Thompson was a highlight as always, helping all to identify what kind of leaders they are and could be, and how to steer the faculty towards success in the National Curriculum and VCE without tearing our own – or anyone else’s - hair out!

Tri-tactics: PE Term 2

This term the Year 10s were lucky to have Pete Keogh from Tri-Tactics come into our PE lessons to teach us self-defence and emotional awareness. We were shocked to find out that 90% of young people will get attacked, in either a physical or emotional way, before the age of 30. By having Pete come to our classes we learnt skills that we would be able to use to maximise our personal safety if we ever had this need in the future. We learnt a lot of new things like how to prevent or defuse potentially violent situations and how to identify and react in vulnerable situations. We also had a lot of fun while doing all this hard work! This course has been really enjoyable for us and is extremely worthwhile.
