Christian author C.S. Lewis once wrote that Christi-anity is not so much about being nice people but in being "new men." We see this contrast in today's Gospel.
"Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus first answers in the predictable way. “Follow the commandments! "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth."
Perhaps for some of us it's easy to answer this way. "I'm a good person!" he seems to reply. Does he truly follow all the commandments he professes to follow? Does he -- in word and deed -- check off all the boxes of the moral law? Perhaps. Whether he's being honest or fudging the truth, Jesus accepts his answer at face value with compassion. "Jesus, looking at him, loved him."
But he's not done yet! Jesus wants to remind us that this attitude alone is not enough. "Go, sell what you have ... then come, follow me." Jesus' invitation to the young man is radical. Abandon everything that gives you any sense of security. Give it all up for an unknown future with a wandering preacher.
The Christian life is not easy. "How hard it is to en-ter the kingdom of God!" It's easier, Jesus says, for a gigan-tic camel to squeeze itself through a tiny needle's eye. But the God of the universe creates out of nothing, breaks the bars of hell, and raises the dead to life. Is a needle's eye really such an obstacle?

St. Luke the Evangelist
On October 18, Catholics and other Christians around the world will celebrate the feast of St. Luke, the physician and companion of St. Paul whose gospel preserved the most extensive biog-raphy of Jesus Christ. St. Luke wrote a greater volume of the New Testa-ment than any other single author, including the earliest history of the Church. Ancient traditions
also acknowledge Luke as the founder of Christian iconography, making him a patron of artists as well as doctors and other medical caregivers. Luke came from the large metropolitan city of Antioch, a part of modern-day Turkey.. Historians do not know whether Luke came to Christianity from Judaism or paganism, although there are strong suggestions that Luke was a gentile convert. Educated as a physician in the Greek-speaking city, Luke was among the most cultured and cosmopolitan members of the early Church. Scholars of archeology and ancient literature have ranked him among the top historians of his time period, besides noting the outstanding Greek prose style and technical accuracy of his accounts of Christ's life and the apostles' missionary journeys. Other students of biblical history adduce from Luke's writings that he was the only evangelist to incorporate the personal testimony of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose role in Christ's life emerges most clearly in his gospel. Tradition credits him with painting several icons of Christ's mother, and one of the sacred portraits ascribed to him – known by the title “Salvation of the Roman People”-- survives to this day in the Basilica of St. Mary Major. Some traditions hold that Luke became a direct disciple of Jesus before his ascension, while others hold that he became a believer only after-ward. After St. Paul's conversion, Luke accompanied him as his personal physician-- and, in effect, as a kind of biographer, since the journeys of Paul on which Luke accompanied him occupy a large portion of the Acts of the Apostles. Luke probably wrote this text, the final narrative portion of the New Testament, in the city of Rome where the account ends. Luke was also among the only companions of Paul who did not abandon him during his final imprisonment and death in Rome. After the martyr-dom of St. Paul in the year 67, St. Luke is said to have preached else-where throughout the Mediterranean, and possibly died as a martyr. However, even tradition is unclear on this point. Fittingly, the evangelist whose travels and erudition could have filled volumes, wrote just enough to proclaim the gospel and apostolic preaching to the world. Pope Paul VI, a pope of dialogue Born Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini on Sept. 26, 1897, Pope Paul VI led the Catholic Church from 1963 until his death on August 6, 1978. Succeeding John XXIII, Paul VI continued the Second Vatican Council implementing its numerous reforms. He wanted a Church that was in dialogue with the modern world. He treated the theme of dialogue at great length in his encyclical Ecclesiam Suam, released on Aug. 6, 1964, exactly 14 years before his death. In it, he wrote he felt a “vocation” to dialogue between the Church and the world. Faced with the issue of whether to change the Church ’s longstanding opposition to artificial birth control, Paul VI penned his landmark encycli-cal Humanae Vitae in 1968, delivering a strong “no” to change and re-affirming the Church’s teaching on contraception. Even though his papa-cy lasted for another 10 years, this would be his last encyclical. Once described by Pope Benedict XVI as “superhuman,” Paul VI governed the Church in the turbulent post-conciliar phase. In the words of Pope Francis, he was a man who “knew how to witness, in difficult years, to the faith in Jesus Christ.” Pope Francis has spoken repeatedly about his predecessor, and earlier this year he confirmed that Paul VI would be made a saint before 2018 was over. Even though Humanae Vitae has garnered much of the discussion over the legacy of his predecessor, for Francis there ’s another document that is “the greatest pastoral document written to date” - Paul VI’s 1975 ex-hortation on evangelization, Evangelii Nuntiandi (On Proclaiming the Gospel). In Evangelii Nuntiandi, Paul VI wrote that the Church itself “has a con-stant need of being evangelized,” and that people today listen “more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” “The world calls for, and expects from us, simplicity of life, the spirit of prayer, charity towards all, especially towards the lowly and the poor, obedience and humility, detachment and self -sacrifice. Without this mark of holiness, our word will have difficulty in touching the heart of modern man. It risks being vain and sterile,” Paul wrote. Paul will become the third pope that Francis has made a saint since his election five years ago.
Oscar Romero, El Salvador’s first saint
Oscar Romero, who will become the first Salvadoran saint, was born on August 15, 1917. He was gunned down during Mass in a hospital chapel March 24, 1980, a day after telling an army made up largely of peasants that they were killing their own people. “No soldier is obliged to obey an order that is contrary to the will of God,” he said. He was shot through the heart by gunmen linked to a right -wing death squad while celebrating Mass, after saying, “one must not love oneself so much as to avoid getting involved in the risks of life that history demands of us, and those who fend off danger will lose their lives.” Romero was outspoken against military oppression during his country ’s bloody civil war in the 1980s, and also of the role the United States played in it. In a letter he sent to U.S. president Jimmy Carter in February of 1980, he urged America not to send military aid to El Salvador: “You say that you are Christian. If you are really Christian, please stop sending military aid to the military here, because they use it only to kill my people. ” His death is considered by the Catholic Church to have been in “odium fidei,” meaning in hatred of the faith.
