The Hagia Sophia

The Hagia Sophia was the worlds largest cathedral for almost a century, and it is now a museum. The Hagia Sophia is located in Turkey and is thought to be the best work of Byzantine Architecture. It was designed by Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles and was built in 537.

Hagia Sophia Christ

This is a mosaic in the Hagia Sophia located in Constantinople. It shows Christ and it is one of the most famous mosaics remaining from the medieval time. The author is unknown.

The Ardagh Chalice

The ardagh Chalice was found around the 8th century. It was found in 1868 in a field. There is very little known about the history of the chalice, except that it was buried several times.

Fountain of Neptune

The fountain of Neptune was made by Bartolomeo Ammannati and designed by Baccio Bandinelli for the wedding of Francesco I de’ Medici and Johanna of Austria.

Gloucester Candlestick

It was probably made in England and its Latin inscriptions talk about Peter who was at that time Abbot of the monastery of St. Peter.

Stavelot Triptych

This was made in 1156 by the Mosan Artists, a group of artists in a valley within Belgium. It is made of gold and was used to protect pieces that were thought to be a part of the cross Christ was crucified on.

Benedictional of St. Aethelwold

This picture was done by Meister des Benedictionale des Heiligen Aethelwold as a part of the Document Benedictional of St. Aethelwold one of the most important documents of Anglo-Saxon school of Illumination. It was done sometime between 963 and 984.

These are items the Anglo-Saxons would wear on their shoulders dating from around the 7th century.

Anglo-Saxon helmet

This was a ceremonial helmet of the Anglo-Saxons. It has been restored now and was most likely used for parades and celebrations.

Muiredach's High Cross

This was a High Cross which is a free standing cross made for Muiredach and at the base asks for you to pray for him. It is located in Monasterboice and it is covered with carvings including Adam and Eve and others.

Hilton of Cadboll Stone

This is a reproduction of the original stone at its original site since many Scotish were not happy about it being moved to a museum. It depicts several things including a hunting scene including a woman.

Winchester bible scenes of David

This is a page taken from the Winchester bible and shows scenes of David. This was done around 1160 and 1175, and all of the work was done by a single scribe however he is unknown.

Petrach’s Virgil

Petrach’s Virgil was done by Simone Martini in 1340. It is the title page to Petrach’s Virgil an illuminated manuscript.

Madonna and Child

Madonna and Child is by Giotto. Not much is known about this painting however it is in the Gothic style of Madonna and child a very used picture. There are many different variations of it.
