RABBI'S CORNER

I have three stones sitting on my desk. They vary in size and color, shape and chemical composition. Each of them reminds me of a magical moment in a particular place; I keep them around to remember who I was then, and what I experienced. But more importantly, I keep them around to remind myself of my hope for myself and the world.

The summer is a natural time for this type of reflection. We edge closer to our High Holy Days and the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah, the Ten Days of Repentance. We also wrap up another year of studies, another year of professional accomplishment. The summer is a good season to spend time with family and friends. Evenings stretch out into warm nights of conversation and festivity weekends and school breaks allow for travel and time together. Summer festivals and camps offer every one of us a chance to reset, reboot, and to enjoy some rest and relaxation.

On these days I find myself reflecting on my small collection of stones. The largest of the three is Indiana limestone, chosen for me by the architect working on our last synagogue renovation. The geode imbedded within can be seen as particular to the quarry this rock came from. But what strikes me more than its sparkling center is the desert hue of this stone’s outer shell. Our entire sanctuary wall is designed to match these color tones and to evoke the Judean hills and our beloved Jerusalem. I remember fondly the process our congregation undertook to choose the stones and the building project that brought us all closer together.

Our connection to Israel manifests in the second stone as well. This stone is tiny, and was not presented to me as a gift, almost the opposite. On a trip to Israel last year, our group was able to visit an Israeli army outpost in the West Bank. This was an active military camp, and the young soldiers stationed there were always on guard. They had spray-painted a red line on the grounds around their makeshift encampment, to mark the

spot where the barbed wire and metal fencing would go. So much security needed to protect these tiny stones. I pocketed a small West Bank stone, one of the millions which witness the intractable conflict between Arabs and Israelis which so often seems permanent. This stone is soaked in red spray paint, yet another symbol of the cost of this war on both sides.

I keep these stones side by side to remind me of our connection to both the history of Israel, and its future. We must take responsibility for each.

Our latest Israel trip has just returned as I write this. We are already planning another visit. I hope you will consider joining us, on either an adult mission or a family friendly tour: all are welcome. If you have been before, I’m sure you will see something new. And if you haven’t been in a while, it’s time to renew your connection. I know you will return feeling inspired, feeling rejuvenated, and feeling optimistic about the future.

Oh, the third stone? You’ll have to stop by and ask me about that one. I plucked it last summer from a Colorado Rocky Mountain riverbed.

As Ira Gershwin wrote decades ago, “The song is over . . . but the melody lingers on.” While my term as your cantor is over, I hope that the melodies will, indeed, linger on for years to come. I know that memories of 38 years are firmly and fondly imprinted in my mind and, again to quote a songwriter (Stephen Schwartz) “You’ll be with me like a handprint on my heart.”

Thanks to all of you for your love and support over the years. All of the celebrations, photos, and notes of the past few months testify to the closeness of our relationship. A special thanks to members of all ages who have shared their musical gifts with me and with you. From the Chai Notes to the Congregational Choir, to our Klezmorim, to the instrumentalists who play on Shabbat —as well as our organists, Travis Person and Mark Stoner and our High Holy Day Choir Director, Michael Messina, and Klezmer Director, Andrew Lyon—each of you has given 100% of yourself to create a rich musical tapestry at IHC.

Now I am moving to the next chapter of my life. Our Board of Directors has granted me the honorific Cantor Emerita and defined what that means so that Brandon and I will always be connected with IHC. In September, I will be serving as an intern at IU Health, beginning a course in Clinical Pastoral Education which will lead to certification as a chaplain. I was inspired to do this by rabbinic colleagues who have served as chaplains in our city.

An activity that I will continue to do is work as a volunteer Collections Processor for the Great American Songbook Foundation. For the past five years, working with their staff and other volunteers has kept me connected with music that I have loved since childhood. The Indianapolis and Carmel communities are fortunate that Michael Feinstein chose to establish that Foundation in our midst. The only activity that remains open is that of performance—I am still deciding whether to play my flute in a band or sing in a choir (with someone else directing).

Brandon, Eddie, Miles and I are grateful that our family has thrived in the embrace of our IHC family. For us, you are a handprint on our hearts. We hope that we will all go from strength to strength in health and happiness.

CHANTS ENCOUNTERSCantor Emerita Janice Roger; [email protected]

CANTOR SEARCH UPDATE A committed and caring group of IHCers has been meeting for the past months to lead the search for our next Cantor. It has been especially meaningful to engage in conversation with the group about who we are and what our congregation looks like moving forward.

The group did not feel that we found our perfect match among the dozen or so candidates we interviewed, and so our search continues. This year we are excited for opportunities to experience our musical rabbis, special musical guests, and of course our own Tami Krichiver, who has shared her music with us for the past many years and will continue to do so.

As part of the ongoing search, we have engaged a talented Interim Cantor for our upcoming High Holy Days. Cantor Betsey Peters-Epstein has served congregations from Florida to Massachusetts and New York. Her warmth and spirit were immediately present with us, even over the computer screen. Her expertise in conducting, musical theater, Yiddish and Ladino music, and chamber music, made us feel even better about this choice. She is excited to be with us for the holidays, and for a few Shabbat services before then, which will give all of us a chance to meet her, and for her to get to know us a bit before the New Year begins.

Please watch your weekly email for information about what dates Cantor Peters-Epstein will be in town. We know she would like to meet you.

CANTOR ROGER DESIGNATED A "SAGAMORE OF THE WABASH" During our Farewell Shabbat service on June 2, Cantor Roger was surprised with this coveted award which was presented by State Senator John Ruckelshaus. The highest distinction in Indiana is the designation of "Sagamore of the Wabash" by the governor, Eric Holcomb. "Sagamore" was a term used by native American tribes of Indiana to describe a lesser chief or a great man among the tribe whom the chief consulted for wisdom and advice. "The Wabash" refers to Indiana's official state river. Special thanks to David Cangany for his assistance in making this happen for our Cantor Emerita. Mazel Tov Janice!

TEMPLE LIBRARYEvelyn Pockrass, Librarian; [email protected]

Todah Rabah—At the end of every program year we reflect on the events of the past year and give thanks to all who have offered help in various ways to Temple Library.

We appreciate the devotion and hard work of the wonderful IHC staff, professional and support members, including the entire Religious School staff and our longtime storyteller, Larry Cohen. This is the time, too, when we give a heartfelt thank you to every library volunteer during the past school year.

Much gratitude is extended to all who assisted with the checking out of books during Storytelling Sundays: Lisa Brown, Liz Cannon, Melissa Clague, Michelle Fruehman, Brad Gershman, Jeremy Glowacki, Jaclyn Grahl, Ben Greenfield, Heather Hefer, Stephanie Kroot and her daughter Lexi, Gene O’Hara, Debbie Organ, Dan Rosen and his son Ben, Jaclyn Rubin, Jennifer Sniderman, Darrel Timpany, Carly Turow, Deb Wagner, and Shana Zelikovich.

Also, many thanks to the reading incentive volunteers who kept records of books read and prizes earned: Rosemary Borek (chair), Stephanie Kroot and Lexi, three members of the Lybolt-Wagner family—Drew, Robin and Deb, Emma Nisonson, Stefani Schaffer, Carly Turow, and Shana Zelikovich.

You can see that the volunteers have been a diverse group of mothers, fathers and children (of various ages!). Volunteering in the library is a happy time for families and we hope that you will want to try it out in the coming years.

WHAT’S NEWIn early January of 2017, I received an email from a writer researching the life of Emma Messing. He wanted to know if the congregation had her father’s letters. Rabbi Mayer Messing, who served Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation from 1867-1907, had seven children, one of whom was his daughter, Emma.

The writer and I had additional correspondence and, to the best of my knowledge, IHC does not have the rabbi’s letters. Then much to my surprise, when Temple Library’s copy of the April issue of Commentary magazine arrived it contained an article entitled, “The Emma Messing Story: The remarkable life of a rabbi’s daughter from Indianapolis,” by Mark Lasswell.

Lasswell writes that, according to the brief Associated Press story of Emma’s death in 1950, Emma was among the first women to be a member of the United States diplomatic service, having worked at our embassy in Berlin from 1921 until 1939. The story of Emma’s life is fascinating, and includes references to her friendship with Carl G. Fisher of Indianapolis Motor Speedway fame, as well as her warnings about the rise of Hitler and fascism in Nazi Germany. The article, on pages 36-41, is well worth taking the time to read and to note that Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation is mentioned. Emma and her parents are buried in IHC’s South (“Kelly Street”) Cemetery.

Also worth your time reading are articles in the several periodicals displayed on the magazine racks in addition to articles of interest in magazines that congregants occasionally are kind enough to loan to Temple Library.

Temple Library is open as usual during the summer months. You always are welcome to visit, browse and borrow. Contact the librarian with any questions.

Meetings are at 12 noon at IHC in Room 206. Read the book.

Bring your lunch. Join the group for a lively discussion. Questions? Contact Evelyn Pockrass, Librarian

MITZVAH STITCHERS MERIT A MAZEL TOVAt the annual Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis meeting on June 14, IHC’s Mitzvah Stitchers received the Melvin Simon Tikkun Olam Award. This award was established in 2002 to recognize unique special projects that enhance our community.

In four years of crocheting, knitting, needlepointing, quilting and sewing, the Stitchers have donated close to 2,000 items (hats, scarves, headbands and lapghans to name a few) to Hooverwood, the Julian Center, the Immigrant Welcome Center, Family Promise, the Homeless Initiative Program, St. Vincent Hospital and the American Heart Association. In addition, they have become a close-knit group who support each other in times of joy and challenge.

IHC is proud of our Mitzvah Stitchers and wish them Mazel Tov and continued success. Any member—male or female—can be a Mitzvah Stitcher. For more information, contact Shelley Kahn at [email protected].

Brotherhood is pleased to continue to honor our long time educator, who is now planning events for congregants over 50, by awarding an annual $1,000 college scholarship to a young person who demonstrates a commitment to Jewish values, education and their community. Many worthy applicants this year made the decision a very difficult one.

Brotherhood hosted Pray and Stay BBQ on the June 16 with generous support from Rabbi Brett. The hot dogs and veggie burgers were delicious! Thanks to our prep crew and the cleanup brigade!

Brotherhood is once again sponsoring Shabbat in the Park on Friday, July 21. It is always a great time with prayer, music, and food. The park is a fun spot to watch the kites flying nearby during this special service. Be prepared to bring lawn chairs and pick your spot under a leafy shade tree. This special Shabbat also will honor the many congregants who have volunteered their time and effort to make all our events happen. Kudos to all those who have volunteered. Catering is by Market District. Reserve your meal on SignUp Genius and leave the rest to us!

Brotherhood offers yet another mitzvah opportunity: Clean up of the Southside cemetery. Check the IHC website (www.ihcindy.org) for dates and times.

It is not too early to begin thinking about the High Holy Holidays. The Usher Corps will be meeting on September 3, site to be determined. Ushering is an opportunity for service—and guarantees preferred seating.

If you haven’t taken care of your annual Brotherhood dues, consider moving up to the Mensch level—the funds raised support GUCI camp scholarships, Tot Shabbat, the computer lab at the Religious School, IFTY, adult scholarships and so many more IHC activities and events.

Brotherhood programs have been added to the IHC calendar. Check frequently and keep an eye out for SignUp Genius opportunities for service.

July 10, Monday will mark our next Brotherhood meeting at the Carmel MCL (July date changed due to the holiday). Future dates: August 7 (possibly at GUCI—check the IHC calendar), September 11 and October 2 at MCL

ADULT EDUCATION

PROGRAMMING FOR CONGREGANTS 50+ WE INVITE YOU On June 4 over sixty congregants joined us for our kickoff of an exciting new programming initiative for those over 50, whether single, married, divorced or widowed. Our goal is to create a variety of programs that build on existing friendships and generate new ones.

The conversation was lively, the ideas plentiful and the enthusiasm for such programming evident. In mid-June we sent out an email questionnaire to all congregants over 50 asking everyone to vote for a preferred name for the group from those chosen at the gathering (50 Chai, LAF = Life After Fifty, 50 North, NFTY after 50). If you do not have email or did not receive the post, please call Barbara in the Education office.

A good deal of the fun and community occurs through the planning process. The email also invited you to join one of

four committees listed below. It’s not too late to be a part of one of these committees—just let us know your 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th committee choices.

Daytime events: choosing and planning events such as lunches, daytime excursions, educational events, cooking classes, etc.

Evening events: selecting and planning events such as dinners, game nights, community concerts, sports events, etc.

Weekend events: choosing and planning events such as progressive dinners, holiday parties, participating in local offerings such as Symphony on the Prairie, day trips, etc.

Overnight trips: selecting and planning overnight or longer trips such as an adult trip to Jewish New York, Chicago, Washington DC Holocaust Museum, etc.

If you have any questions or suggestions please contact Marcia Goldstein, [email protected].

SISTERHOODKaren Rossen, IHC Sisterhood President; [email protected]

OUR MISSIONTo join together in Sisterhood and, guided by the principles of Reform Judaism, to strengthen our congregation, our community and ourselves.

Amy Isaacs, Immediate-Past President of IHC Temple Sisterhood, received the Deborah Award at our Spring General Membership Meeting on May 21, 2017. The award, presented by WRJ Central District President, Sheilah Abramson-Miles, is given to someone who has provided outstanding service to her Sisterhood, Temple, and past president, of IHC Temple Sisterhood. As the immediate past president, Amy provides me counsel and guidance to keep Sisterhood at the forefront of Temple life. She is so smart and kind, and her counsel is so thoughtful, that I seek her out often just to hear what she thinks and not always about Sisterhood matters. Amy continues to do important and special things for all of us at IHC!

Over the last year, Amy has streamlined our Oneg Shabbat program to make it easier for people to host and to reduce the number of Shabbats when there is no Oneg. This means she is often shopping and setting up for Onegs by herself. In her 35 years with Sisterhood, she has served many positions on our Board, including Corresponding Secretary, Co-VP of Programming, and Co-VP of Membership. As Sisterhood president, Amy managed the acquisition of new kitchen equipment for IHC, a $25,000 gift from Sisterhood. She improved our budgeting process and contributed to every program that took place under her watch. She continues to bake and cook for Sisterhood and Temple events, setting up and cleaning up, too. Amy now serves on the IHC board of directors, bringing her enthusiasm and passion to projects that touch all congregation members, such as serving on the newly formed Caring Community Committee and previously chairing the Social Justice Committee. But more importantly, she was the 2016 Shavuot Cheesecake Contest winner and tied for first-place the year before.

Amy also volunteers each week at a local school to help students learn to read and she regularly cooks and serves a couple of times a year at the Dayspring Center and for Family Promise (IHN). Amy is an all- around caring person who helps anyone who is in need, with no expectations for anything in return.

Amy will chair the Nominating Committee which will be activated in the next few weeks to begin the process of vetting nominees for the 2018-2020 Sisterhood board. If you are interested or you know someone who may make a great board member, please contact Amy Isaacs. If you just want someone fun and clever to chat with, look for her at the Temple. She will be there doing something to make us a stronger community. With a heartfelt mazel tov to Amy, our 2016 Deborah Award Winner!

During the reception following the Shavuot service (beautifully led by our 18 Confirmands), Sisterhood conducted our Annual Shavuot Cheesecake & Kugel Bake-Off. This year, the competition was fierce, with nine cheesecake and three kugel entries. All Shavuot attendees were encouraged to judge and we are proud to announce this year’s winners: Stephanie Cohen for her Espresso cheesecake and Rachel Silien for her East Coast Kugel. Their names will be prominently displayed on the award plaques. Mazel Tov to our winners!
