togetHer in Mission 2016Each of us is called to share our gifts in support of the Church. We must first support our own parish, and then our Archdiocese, and then our Church throughout the world. The funds we collect will directly benefit more than

250,000 of our Catholic brethren, and ensure that our parishes and schools remain centers of faith and hope for their surrounding communities. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please make a pledge or donation and return by mail or bring to Mass. If you have not, use one of the special Together in Mission envelopes in the pews, the vestibule or at the Parish Center. If you wish to donate by credit card, you may use our Faith Direct online provider. • Log into your account and add your gift to the Together

in Mission appeal.• If you are not signed up for Faith Direct, this is a perfect

opportunity to do so and make both your Together in Mission gift and your parish gifts through Faith Direct.

• To make a "one-time gift" by credit card, Faith Direct also allows you to do this in (up to 5) monthly payments. Find the "one-time gift" link on our website.

God bless you for your generous gifts to those in need.

Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodToday’s Scripture readings are filled with three important facets of stewardship: humility, discipleship, and the grace and presence of God. The First Reading from the prophet Isaiah relates how Isaiah personally responded to the calling he received from God. His initial reaction was one of unworthiness and humility essentially saying: “I cannot serve you God for I am a sinner.” However, when the Lord calls someone, that call is accompanied by the strength and presence of God to allow them to carry out the Lord’s bidding. God tells Isaiah, “Your wickedness is removed; your sin purged.”The second reading from 1 Corinthians has a part that reminds me of that often used, maybe over used, phrase - "It is what it is." Our second reading from St. Paul's letter has a similar but much more powerful message, "But by the grace of God I am what I am." (1 Cor 15:10) We know that St. Paul was converted; he was a changed man, forgiven, cleansed, and full of love - which at one time was hate. Paul knew this was not his own accomplishment, but it was done by the presence of God within him. St. Paul saw that his accomplishments were made possible by gifts given to him by God and he was using these gifts for the good of the Church. Then in the Gospel, Peter reacts very much like Isaiah when he realizes that it is the Lord who is in the boat with him.

Jesus reacts to Peter’s exclamation by saying “Do not be afraid.” Jesus is telling Peter that he will have God’s help and gifts, and God will not let him fail.We need to be like Isaiah, Paul and Peter and realize that we too have God-given gifts that are to be used for the good of others. Our talents and abilities

have been given to us not only for our own use but also to help and serve our church and community. Our true joy will only come when we use those gifts in the service of others. There was a sign in a store downtown that put it this way, "You can't have a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

Please contact us, S t e w a r d s h i p @ A m e r i c a n M a r t y r s . o r g with questions or comments on this article or about Stewardship.

resPect liFe Ministry oneliFe LA 2016 Celebrates the Dignity and Beauty of Human Life at All StagesSome AMC parishioners and Respect Life Ministry members gathered at Olvera Street in Downtown LA prior to the kickoff of the oneLife La event on Saturday, January 23. More than 15,000 people followed Archbishop Jose Gomez in a Walk for Life to Grand Park where they heard inspirational speakers, such as Nick Vujicic and Patricia Heaton, listened to great music, and enjoyed a beautiful afternoon in Downtown LA.

At the end of the day, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels was “standing room only” for the Requiem Mass for the Unborn, celebrated by Archbishop Gomez with representatives of many faith communities in attendance. At the end of Mass, 200 candles were carried into the Sanctuary, representing the 200 lives that were lost to abortion in Los Angeles County on that one day. The lights in the Cathedral were turned off and the congregation spent 200 seconds of silence in memory of these lives. Despite this sad statistic, it is encouraging to note that at the time of the first Requiem Mass for the Unborn fourteen years ago the number of abortions in one day totaled over 400. These 200 candles remained for one week in the window of the Cathedral facing the 101 Freeway. Please consider joining us next January for oneLife La 2017, and join us for a great day in celebration of Life! “Come unto me, all you who labor, and I will give you rest.” Matt 11:28Tuesday evenings, 7:30 - 8:30pM, beginning February 16 St. Joseph’s Chapel in the Spirituality Center (please use Pacific entrance)

Each of us longs for belonging. Our basic search is what drives our lives. Jesus very clearly, in simple terms, defines belonging, invites us to him, and shows us the way. For these evenings, we are invited to pause in prayer to examine our lives more deeply in the light of God’s unfailing grace. The intent is to provide a thorough, personal examination of conscience in one’s own time, with the structured support of a weekly contemplative prayer group, leading to a deeper commitment to Christ within and beyond our faith community. Join us for two 20 minute periods of silent prayer, closing with “Our Father.” There will be reflection questions given with brief instructions for personal meditation. Handouts available for missed sessions. Join us once, often or always, for the Love of it! For information, call Donna Ennis, 310-941-1349.

“There is a way to examine yourself and find within you the source of peace and light, where before only shadows have been seen. This examination grants the assurance of peace and serenity to you and to those who are around you, by grace.” Mother Marie des Douleurs, Benedictine Sisters of Jesus Crucified

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Help children through challenges by offering support instead of solutionsWhether it’s a toddler being mean-spirited to a sibling or a teenager being self-involved and refusing to see the bigger picture, it can be tempting to try to fix their challenges. Under many circumstances, the attitude of trying to fix someone is often counter-productive.Instead of offering a solution to child facing a dilemma, do your best to listen, ask questions, encourage, empathize and pray.
