CALL UPON THE LORD

The very first line of today’s first reading summons us to seek the Lord and to call upon God. This sentiment is echoed in the refrain for today’s responsorial psalm: “The Lord is near to all who call upon him” (Psalm 145:18a). Saint Paul is the embodiment of someone who constantly sought the Lord. In the excerpt we read today from his letter to the Philippians, we find Saint Paul toward the end of his life, a life he describes as completely consonant with Christ. He writes, “For to me life is Christ” (Philippians 1:21). To find out what it means to live life completely in accord with Christ we need look no further than today’s Gospel. There we find that God’s love and mercy are immeasurable for all those who seek and call upon the Lord. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Turn to the LORD, who is generous in forgiving (Isaiah 55:6-9). Psalm — The Lord is near to all who call upon him (Psalm 145). Second Reading — Live your lives in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ (Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a). Gospel — The last will be first, and the first will be last (Matthew 20:1-16a).

Would you believe we have another parable today? And

another parable of the Kingdom of Heaven, no less.

If we had any question about what was important to

Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, we should know the

answer by now. He's here to introduce a kingdom, and

he'd love for us to be on board.

One thing he knows is that the parameters, the context,

the scale of everything he's introducing don't match what

we're familiar with, so he uses parables to try to get us to

see in a new way.

That's why the other day he'll tell us about someone who

sells all that he has, who happily gets rid of everything,

so that he can gain one pearl.

He'll tell us about someone who can't forgive--so we can

discover why forgiveness has to permeate us.

He'll tell us about how he's arriving soon with his angels

to repay all according to their conduct, and he really

hopes we've gotten the point by then.

Jesus' insistent returning to the theme of the Kingdom of

Heaven happens again today, and we can see he needs us

to shake off our natural perspective.

Even as toddlers we quickly recognize what's fair and

unfair, what the rules are and what happens when we

disobey them. Today Jesus wants to flip all that. He

wants us to see that the supernatural doesn't work like

the natural does. The Divine perspective doesn't see

things like the human.

Hopefully we can allow this message to permeate

us. Hopefully we can bring forward all that we have, all

that we've prioritized, to allow this new perspective to

recategorize who we are and what we value.

Jesus is giving us a chance. He's giving us a chance to let

the heavenly break into our earthly experience. He

knows the close of day comes quickly, and knows we

need to acclimate our eyes to the swiftly coming dawn.

estuviéramos a bordo.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Last week, we began the new year of Catechesis of the

Good Shepherd in the atrium. At the end of each session, we gather together at the prayer table to listen to scripture and pray. The prayers of the smallest children are most often praise and thanksgiving, because that is what comes naturally to them. One child, while gazing at the crucifix,

whispers “Thank you for You.” What a beautiful reminder for us, the simple reminder to be thankful for Jesus, for His love, for His sacrifice, for the gift of Himself.

Catequesis Del Buen Pastor
