Considering a call to the priesthood? The Office of Vocations is hosting discernment gatherings for young men who would like to discern the call to priesthood. If you would like to attend, please email [email protected] or call (804) 359-5661 and request to speak with the Vocations Office.

Information Discernment gatherings are the first Saturday of every month. The event usually begins at 10:00am with Mass followed by a social event and lunch.

Mount Tabor Days—Men’s Vocation Retreats, are 9:00am—3:00pm on September 19 at Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Williamsburg, October 17 at St. Patrick Church in Richmond and November 14, TBD. These events will also be offered in the spring. Each retreat will be accessible to men on location and through a streaming platform. The Vocation retreat is hosted by seminarians and priests from the Diocese of Richmond.

Next weekend, September 26 and 27, we have a second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. In good times and bad, Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have dedicated themselves to service and acts of mercy. Today, they pray for an aching world. Yet years of serving for little or no pay have left their religious communities without enough retirement savings. Your gift

to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please be generous.

Parish News YOSAR Registration—Calling all teenagers! Did you know we have an active High School Youth Group at St. Andrew’s? After meeting virtually and then in limited capacities over the summer, we will begin to meet in person on Sunday, September 27! This year we meet on Sundays from 4:30—6:30pm. All

teens are welcome! 9th, 11th, and 12th grade students need to register for YOSAR (aka any high schooler that isn’t preparing for Confirmation this year). YOSAR is our youth group at St. Andrew’s. Check out https://standrewsva.org/high-school-youth-ministry for more information!

Who should register for Confirmation Preparation? All incoming 10th graders who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist and are parishioners at St. Andrew's need to register for Confirmation. This includes students of Roanoke Catholic that are registered parishioners of St. Andrew's. Please note, you must be 15 or older and in 10th grade or higher to register. Go to https://standrewsva.org/2020-2021-confirmation-registration to register! For more information, please email Megan at [email protected].

Our Justice and Peace Ministries at St. Andrew’s have continued through the pandemic. Even with limitations and strict regulations, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has maintained its commitment to reach out to our community by phone and provided donations and assistance to those in need.

The Society has resumed meeting in person. Business meetings are on the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30pm in the Social Hall. Evening Prayer gatherings meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 5:30pm in the Chapel (enter through the Social Hall). See our website for details!

Invalid Marriage: do you have a case? Join us for a Zoom webinar with the Tribunal of our Diocese. These presentations are directed to persons seeking so-called Church annulments. The presenters will explain the essential parts of the process and the basic information needed to present a case. Others seeking a better understanding of “annulments” are welcome to sign up, too. Presentations will be offered at two different times. Please register by Friday, September 25, 2020 with one of the links listed below.

September 23 — Memorial of St. Padre Pio (St. Pio of Pietrelcina)

Born to a southern Italian farm family, the son of Grazio, a shepherd. At age 15 he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars in Morcone, and joined the order at age 19. He suffered several health problems, and at one point his family thought he had tuberculosis. He was ordained at age 22 on August 10, 1910.

While praying before a cross on September 20, 1918, Padre Pio received the stigmata. He is the first priest ever to be so blessed. As word spread, especially after American soldiers brought home stories of Padre Pio following WWII, the priest himself became a point of pilgrimage for both the pious and the curious. He would hear confessions by the hour,

reportedly able to read the consciences of those who held back. He was reportedly able to bi-locate, levitate, and heal by touch.

In 1956 he founded the House for the Relief of Suffering, a hospital that serves 60,000 a year. Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968 at age 81.

Today there are over 400,000 members worldwide in prayer groups begun by Padre Pio in the 1920s.

His canonization miracle involved the cure of Matteo Pio Colella, age 7, the son of a doctor who works in the House for Relief of Suffering, the hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo. On the night of June 20, 2000, Matteo was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital with meningitis. By morning doctors had lost hope for him as nine of the boy's internal organs had ceased to give signs of life. That night, during a prayer vigil attended by Matteo's mother and some Capuchin friars of Padre Pio's monastery, the child's condition improved suddenly. When he awoke from the coma, Matteo said that he had seen an elderly man with a white beard and a long, brown habit, who said to him: "Don't worry, you will soon be cured." The miracle was approved by the Congregation and Pope John Paul II on 20 December 2001.
